Haiti
Amy Goodman and Dennis Bernstein will be doing a special report on the crisis in Haiti, tonight at 7PM EST on WBAI and the other Pacifica stations.. you can tune in at wbai.org. Amy and the Democracy Now! crew have delivered the best coverage throughout this Haiti situation, and are sure to bring a much needed balance to mainstream media's slant tonight.
I can't help but notice that, as of this posting, so many of the big-name political bloggers have been silent on this story, which has been unfolding for weeks.. I see nothing on Talking Points Memo, nothing on Daily Kos, or Eric Alterman or Tbogg..
It's a complex situation and I can understand not wanting to pontificate without a comprehensive knowledge.. this is why I haven't gone beyond offering links here and there (atrios and Matthew Yglesiashave offered thoughts while being up-front about their limited knowledge). And as I've acknowledged before, no single blogger can ever come close to covering everything that deserves coverage. But out of all these guys I'd think somebody would be able to drop some kind of science.
It kinda seems to me like the story has been off their collective radar, which is the type of thing that makes me more acutely aware of how the elite political blogs are almost all done by white males. I dunno, I'm not drawing any conclusions from it, but it's something I notice.. any thoughts, or links to good Haiti posts that I missed?
EDIT: Here is one blog that digs deep into it. (via Matthew Yglesias)

its scary to see that blogger (Yglesias) refer to Haiti as "ungovernable"...that's a concept i hadn't thought of and don't want to. But what if its true? What if no matter who is in power rebels will eventually want to overthrow them? How the hell do you resolve a situation like that?

thanks for the heads up on wbai's coverage ... extremely unsettling, but much better coverage than i've seen or heard elsewhere

To me, Haiti is always the biggest story. I'm glad to see that several of our fellow hip hop bloggers are up on this situation.
I think one of the reasons for a lack of coverage on blogs is that Haiti requires a certain level of understanding and familiarity before you can make a definitive statement. It is a complicated situation, even for people who have been following it for many years. Simply keeping all the different groups straight is no small task. There are the "rebels" (wildly overestimated in number?), the national police force, Aristide-loyal gangs (government funded?), the mainstream political opposition, the business community (including narco-traffic), the Dominican Republic (U.S. ally and staging ground for the rebels), the CIA, the U.S. military, state dept, and a familiar cast of mercenaries and paramilitary veterans like rebel leaders Phillipe and Chamblain.
As far as the "ungovernability" argument -- that is bullshit. It is like saying, oh this guy is having a heart attack and there is an 80% chance he will die... let's not try to save him. And this is not a do or die situation. The people of Haiti will survive this. Most Haitians want all the same things we want.
The first step is to stabilize the economy. No government will last with unemployment above 70%. People need jobs.
Second, the U.S. needs to provide financial and technical support for Haiti. Who knows, it might be cheaper than invading the country every 10 years.
Third, the U.S. needs to provide future government leaders with a viable security plan. Haiti needs at least one reliable security force, whether it be an army or national police force. Right now, there is no army, and a mostly dissolved police force.
Fourth, the U.S. needs to make sure that its covert forces are working for, not against, the interests of Haiti. Narco-traffic and death squads are exactly what Haiti DOES NOT need right now.
Finally, peace to all the people on the internet who are keeping each other informed.

Haiti makes me cry. And the way it is treated (these "rebels" are like the "contras," bought & paid for with US funds--AGAIN), and the way it treats itself (a dear friend once said some Haitians say "Haiti" means "Hate I").
And I'm still needing to find out if France ever repaid the huge amounts money they extorted from Haiti after it won its independence...and what are the chances for reparations.
I've never met a Haitian who wasn't an artist--maybe artists just find more motivation and methods to leave, expats might be an unrepresentative sample. But my fondest dream is to be able to visit there, in peaceful times, and hoping that some trees will be left to hold the earth in place. (So many trees are gone, used & sold for charcoal, the earth is supposedly visibly leeching into the sea all around what used to be an island paradise.)
Even in this world of injustice, what's happened to Haitians over these last 200 years seems SO unjust.
(I just noticed what was at the root of "unfair." ::sick laugh::)

Btw, Pandagon and Oliver Willis are two of the biggest leftie blogs and they are run by black guys. Pandagon may be the best political blog ever, really.
Posted by: sym at March 1, 2004 07:22 PM
Yeah I read both of those regularly, although Oliver is a little more middle-of-the-road to me (not meant as a criticism, it's cool to have a variety of perspectives). Also KOS of dailykos.com is latino, from El Salvador.

This is sorta off topic, but has anybody seen the George W. campaign ads where he's basically used the 911 attacks as a backdrop for his message?
Dude's ridiculous.
