My Brush With Biggie Smalls
March 9th, as you all should know, is Biggie Smalls Memorial Day, this year marking the 7th anniversary of Christopher Wallace's passing. I will now commemorate the day with a somewhat random and namedroppy story.
In the mid-nineties I used to spend every Saturday night at WNWK 105.9 FM, which was home to hip-hop's very first radio shows in its earlier incarnation as WHBI, and housed classic rap shows on Saturday nights throughout the 90s including The Dirty Dozen, the infamous DNA/Hank love show, Red Bandit's Nighthawks show, and the legendary Awesome Two (who will be our guests this week on WBAI).
I would do my show earlier that night, then come down to WNWK's studio on Canal Street to hang with my radio brethren and play chess with Stan the engineer. After the Dirty Dozen finished their show we'd usually go out for a late-night meal, and whichever artist was in the house that week often came along.
One of the artists who came along regularly was Shinehead, who was well past his commercial prime at that point but still keeping himself in the game, and always big fun to be around, gregarious and full of jokes. That night while we walked up to Round the Clock on 8th street, Shinehead was in the middle of telling a story had everyone's rapt attention when a voice came booming from inside a car with tinted windows parked outside the restaurant: "YO! IS THAT SHINEHEAD!?? YO C'MERE MAN!!"
We all turned to around to see a big black hand beckoning us over to the car, and followed behind as Shinehead walked over to greet the fan, and as I stepped up for a closer look I thought "damn is that Biggie Smalls??" And that's just who it was, excitedly giving Shinehead a pound and going on about how he loved his record back in the day. That'll always be how I remember Biggie, as a fan who was totally geeked to be meeting Shinehead, and gave him utmost respect even though he himself was already a much bigger star by that time.
I told that story to Mister Cee soon afterwards, and he said that sounded just like Biggie, that he was always a devoted hip-hop fan and music lover at heart, and no matter how much he talked about being in the rap game for the money it was always his love for the music that really drove him.

Wanted to convey my very brief encounter with Biggie. A friend and I went to the Tunnel, a defunct club in New York. Funk Flex, a friend of his, was DJing that night. I was pretty ambivalent about going there, of course but I was interested in partaking in the legend of the famous hip hop venue (in New York at that time atleast).
Anyway, we get there, probably too early for things to jump off. So me a my friend mill around watching the DJ mostly, who was Big Kap at that point. After getting tired of that I head toward the bar.
At the bar I see this light skinned cat talking in a rambunctious manner to another cat. Lo and behold it's LL Cool J seemingly admonishing The Notorious B.I.G. This was the early 90's I think. Biggie's album had already dropped.
I had seen a picture of Biggie from the Party and Bullshit days and also the Supercat video so I immediatedly recognized him. He(Biggie) seemed demure, essentially saying "yeah you're right" to whatever LL was saying, like he wanted to cry or something.
From what I remember they were talking about something in the industry. I just remember thinking these guys are so normal looking to me unlike my meeting with KRS ONE who is bigger than life.
Phife was in the house also taking pictures along the wall with some big but freaks in front of those hip hop backdrops in a B Boy pose.

I got a story to tell ! Remember that nightclub Palladium in the 90's where Funk Master Flex was the dj. Anyway I get there and there is a huge line no way is this record label promoter standin on that line! I pass and get to the front and I notice Jessica's (Stress Mang.) is in workin my girl Tanya from L.I.C. H.S. is searching the women so Yo T wassup , she says wait a minute, so I wait, next thing I know I am in . Yeah! I walk in downstairs it is kinda crowded with the 5 boros of HIPHOP Wu-Tang Clan all of them even ODB, I look to my right and see my part of town Queens/ MOB Deep/ Nas soo I start to go that way when all of a sudden I look and lock eyes to my left and see this Big, Black guy in a sweater with a huge B on it and he is talking to my friend Tanya that just let me in. So he gets up from the crowd of people that he is with and heads towards me. I remember thinking in side like no way is Biggie comin my way in front of some of the biggest people in HIPHOP at the time. So I freeze and look around the room and everybody is in a trance watching his every move. He comes right up to me and says Hi! I was in such a state of shock that words just did not come out. He says so watcha doin here by ya self/ come sitt with us. I finally say Thanks for the invite, I see ya in a few where's the restroom? That party was off the hook! Biggie had and still has a tremendous Spirit / he could move a whole club. Aka ( Sister Mac )
