March 10, 2004Talib Kweli vs. ImRickJamesB***hRecently someone who goes by the name of "ImRickJamesBitch" posted links to a demo version of Talib Kweli's unfinished album. After a warning from ?uestlove that Kweli had heard about this and was fuming, Kweli himself appeared with a message for all those he immortalized on Kanye's album as "Okayplayer Haters": You know what, I’m a fan of hip-hop too. If I had a chance to get a hold of one of my favorite artists CD’s early, I would jump at it. So if some asshole from a recording studio leaks my unfinished, unmixed and uneven album, consider it a personal triumph. Play it for your friends, and if you like it, buy the version I want you to have. If you are a fan of my music, allow me to live off it so I can continue to bring it to you. But once you put it on a website and encourage people to download it, you become the bigger asshole. You are not respecting my artistic process and worse, you are taking food out of my children’s mouth. The shit is depressing really because I work so hard and I deserve the right to determine how I want my music presented. If you are truly a fan of my music, please do not support people who do this, no matter what the temptation might be. This music is what I have to live on. You also disrespect the other artists by spreading rough vocals and rough mixes. You really don’t give a f**k about nobody but yourself. It’s sad. ImRickJamesBitch quickly reappeared with this reply: I appreciate your announcement and definitely see some of your points. But I think your anger should be directed toward the nigga who stole your shit out the studio. I'll be staying tuned to okayplayer to catch the next chapter of this drama... Hopefully Charlie Murphy will be involved somehow. Kweli got into something similar a couple of years ago on the site, going ballistic on a kid named DJ 3rd Rail, for reasons that escape me now. Talib's argument doesn't hold water. Kanye's album was bootlegged on the web weeks before it dropped and I heard rough versions of some of the songs on mixtapes months before it was released. How rough were those songs? Well I have a version of Slow Jams that makes Kanye's breath control sound horrible. It's the old piracy versus obscurity argument. Tim O'Reilly is a genius for successfully arguing that "Obscurity is a far greater threat to authors and creative artists than piracy." Read up here: http://www.openp2p.com/pub/a/p2p/2002/12/11/piracy.html So fans who download are not stealing money from Talib's children...they are keeping him relevent. And Talib hasn't gone gold because his last two albums still do not equal up to the gold selling masterpiece that Mos Def dropped back when Rawkus was still unheard of. Talib should learn how to write SONGS/MELODIES better instead of threatening a devoted fan. Posted by: Madison at March 10, 2004 08:29 PM If I were in Talib Kweli's position, I'd issue a notice to the company hosting the files that the files are placed there illegally and then compel them to provide additional info, as needed, in order to assist in prosecution. The reply that points the finger at the person who originally leaked the tracks isn't very strong since by posting links to download they perpetuate the theft of someone else's intellectual property. I'm of the mindset that unless an artist explicitly says it's alright to provide other-then-studio-album product, it's better to not do it. Posted by: Groove at March 10, 2004 08:40 PM Talib has a right to make a living: if rapping doesn't work, he can get a job like the rest of us. Talib does NOT have the right to be a rich celebrity. I think there are some entitlement issues here. The irony, of course, is that Talib has marketed himself and the righteous artist, yet now he finds himself arguing the case of the very mainstream establishment that is paying his bills. Posted by: eric at March 11, 2004 12:26 AM I see what you are trying to say Madison but peep this. It's hard to compare Kanye to Kweli. Kanye had two of top songs(slow jamz & thru the wire) getting constant play on BET & Mtv. He also had a major buzz and the Roc behind him. When Kanye's stuff leaked it was close to the release date. Does Kweli's album even have a release date? Cats nowadays will fiend for anything from "certain artists". I'll bet if Kweli made some rhyme while he was on the toilet and used the flush as a beat, so-called fans would rush to dl it. Posted by: quimby at March 11, 2004 03:40 AM The "you don't represent a physical threat to me" part is priceless. Picture Kweli beating somebody's ass! Posted by: Tom at March 11, 2004 09:24 AM I understand Talib's frustration. I'm a huge fan of him and I will download these tracks AND buy the album when it comes out. For everything he represents, he deserves to be supported. Reflection Eternal is a classic to me and ever since I saw him in concert at the Rave in Milwaukee, to me, he represents Hip-hop and what it is supposed to be. Posted by: N56 at March 11, 2004 09:47 AM You know who we need in the mix on this? Will High. Posted by: David at March 11, 2004 12:35 PM I'm not a fan of Talib's music but in his defense he never threatened to beat the dude's ass. IARJB read it the wrong way, I'm pretty sure. Posted by: David at March 11, 2004 01:00 PM Like it or not, Kweli isn't mainstream, and I doubt he's going to lose that many units over this. Besides, if the shit was barely finished... Posted by: noixe at March 11, 2004 01:23 PM I love watching these artists get dragged into the "digital age" kicking and screaming. This same shit happens every time a new technology like this is introduced - VCRs, tape recorders, radio, etc. - they fight it until they realize there's assloads of money to be made from it. This MP3 downloading shit is not going away, so you should embrace it. If there's such a demand for this unmixed crap online, download the bootleg and sell it on talibkweli.com for $5 (assuming that your label/master will allow it). It's that simple. It would take less than an hour to set up. Posted by: big zone at March 11, 2004 03:16 PM is this what he means by "cross town beef?" Posted by: Yojimbot at March 11, 2004 06:36 PM I feel bad for Talib- As far as I know he has always been a supporter of online music- I have a gang of unreleased joints that I have copped from various websites. I think most artists can deal with there albums showing up online- but its a much different story when an album is leaked 2 weeks prior to the release as opposed to 3 months. His album "was" scheduled for relase in June.
Posted by: playaplaya at March 11, 2004 06:59 PM artist who find there work being downloaded without there permission shouldn't be mad at the people who download it or the websites who make it available. they should investigate the people working with and around there product. know the people you're dealing with. the one's who should be looking out for your best interest. if it happened to anyone before it's a good chance it will happen again. maybe they need to tighten up security and increase survelence.?? Posted by: dialect at March 11, 2004 08:18 PM Let's face it-- even though Talib is underground, it's rare that a hip-hop artist can stay underground for very long. A rap career takes money to make enough money just to keep production afloat. Talib's not being greedy-- he just has to pay bills. Those are expensive bills, whether you go gold/platinum or not. It's not like he stopped rapping about conscious shit-- he has to upgrade his beats, you know. If he wants to work with big producers, he needs to cop some cash. If he wants to tour, he needs to cop some cash. If his label sees that he isn't selling, they'll drop him, no matter how ill his rhymes are. And I doubt that Talib is as rich as, say, Jay-Z or Kanye West. Those cats have their thumbs in other pies, but Talib (as far as I know) is strictly an MC who is starting to dabble in beat-making. I agree that Talib should be more mad at the person who leaked the demo. There would be no need for a fan to post it if he had his shit on lock. Posted by: Sex McGinty at March 11, 2004 08:48 PM For all that listened, you know why Kweli is pissed. First off, track 10 is bananas. Madison, you are so full of shit. How can you not understand why he is pissed? His music is being represented by tracks that were never meant to see the light of day. Anyway, dont F with Kweli. He's the illest MC out there - Game Over. Posted by: dave at March 12, 2004 12:17 AM ehh I think he's pretty wack. Posted by: David at March 12, 2004 01:28 AM
Posted by: Fred at March 13, 2004 08:03 AM Damn not even gold!!!!! That sucks !!!! Kweli is dope as hell. The downloading thing is good and bad it keeps him hot on the street. However,if the music is hot it also makes him have to keep making new music so the album has fresh music for the consumers. Studio time gets expensive. Kanye's leak had me anticipating the album which I got for free from the label and I copped a copy. The same with Kweli. This is year with kanye setting the precedence. He just has to get a buzz this downloading could be it..... Peace to Kweli make it happen Yogi Posted by: Dj Yogi at March 13, 2004 07:13 PM first and foremost im not much of a KWELI fan. but this cat "imrickjamesbitch" is obviously a pussy ass internet livin crab. do yall really respect these ARTISTS and enjoy their music, or are yall just tryin to get "internet props" from OTHER net geeks by passin around "exclusive", unfinished, unreleased shit? this isnt an issue about piracy. Posted by: The Prototype at April 3, 2004 01:25 AM This is to Talib Kweli, I am a fan of your music. I can't believe you haven't gone gold or platinum. That sh*t is almost upsetting to me that talented artists like yourself don't sell and bullsh*t artist doing stupid songs do sell. I have to admit when I saw your stuff on the internet, I downloaded it immediately, as a college kid, this is what I do. But if that is how it sounds unmixed and undone, you can guarantee that I will still buy it whenever it comes out. P.S. That song you did for the Dave Chapelle show was fire with Mos Def was fire. Are you guys going to make another Black Star Album. Posted by: John Vision at April 3, 2004 09:59 AM No doubt Kweli is one of the illest MCs and lyricists out there and has been for some time. That being said his last album dropped in 2002 and the fans that have been there for a while--myself included--are eager to hear some new shit. That's why enough people rushed to their computers to find his songs, out of excitement and curiosity. Unfortunately most of us were disappointed because like Talib himself said the songs were unfinished and most of 'em don't sound that great. As an artist Kweli has the right to represent his shit the way that HE wants, when HE feels it's finished not when imrickjamesbitch does. I totally understand he's pissed off. Anyone who's a true fan though, and i'm sure there's nuff people out there judging based solely on the amount of people that posted messages on this board that are more than willing to shell out a few bucks for his new album. Once finished i'm sure it'll sound TIGHT. He won't lose too many units on this one and for sure this album is gonna be the one that brings him into the mainstream and really puts him on the big map. Bottom line he's one of the greatest rappers out there and some punk leakin his shit on the net isn't going to stop him from going where he wants to go. The others are imposters, some knowing it, some not. Some responses arouse anger due the ignorance contained therein. Three quick points: 1) The costs of production from A to Z are immense, and whatever u need to do to protect that investment and produce bigger payouts is vital to your life and livelyhood. 2)"Physical Threat" RJB - Our man Talib has MORE THAN ENOUGH for real for real niggaz in his back pocket who indeed can pose very serious threat to your livelhood. 3) Unifinished versions - Not to get long winded but the production process is just that! The majority of any jam u hear is recorded 10-15 times, looking for the perfect take or takes. Then its eq, mix and mastered more than a few times as well. Edits are made, re-arrangements etc...BEFORE that final product is displayed. This is applies to most art forms....And end of the day, its the Artist who decides when his or her work is ready for display and in what form it is to be displayed, nuff said nah mean?..... Posted by: wiLDNIce at June 27, 2004 02:09 AM First off, to "ITS MEEE!", BlackStar is way better than "Quality". Any way, its fucked up that Kweli has never gone gold, let along platinum. Yet shitty artists like Nelly and Lil John go multiplatinum. Are people really that stupid and mentally dependant on populartiy? His lyrics are plasma...period. Why not buy his CDs? I didn't download the "Beautiful Struggle" CD, but did download the "Beautiful MixTape" since he doesn't make any money off the mixtape. I will BUY his CD when it comes out in September because I buy all his and any good artist's CDs. I hope he beats that kid's ass. Posted by: Sylent Khaos at July 12, 2004 04:03 AM The simple yet sad fact that Kweli has never gone Platnium or at least Gold should be all the proof needed to determine that some where along the line rap took a critical bad turn, a bad turn that is quickly becoming a full out downwards spiral. Kweli is probably the BEST rapper in the game at the moment (Mos Def is really the only other possibillity), yet he gets next-to-no respect. There's sadly a good chance that if you walk down the street and ask one of your rap-loving neigbors who Talib Kweli is they probably won't know, but elderly people that can barely hear know exactly who Nelly is. It's sad really that this is what has become of Hip Hop. Being conscious and provoking thought has become a thing of the past. Now bitches, money, and material possessions are priority numero uno. Rappers of Kweli's breed are an endangered species, likely to be extinct if we as the paying customers don't start respecting their craft as much as we should. Their music is something many take for granted, when in reality it's something we should cherish. So Kweli this is from a true fan... please keep doin' your thing, and just try your best to ignore people who refuse to treat your music with the respect it deserves. Blige came in later and laid her shit over. That was the reason I was upset, not because people stole music. Once I present it, you steal what you want to steal, the karma’s on you, it’s not for me to decide. The problem is that it was unfinished and lot of people didn’t get that. A lot of people are overreacting when they say that I got upset about it." ImRickJamesBitch is a fucking moron. First, your response to Talib's comment assumes he is threatening you physically. He didn't say "I'm going to deal with you accordingly by kicking your ass." Shit, I imagine him writing something down to level his frustration with your overblown ego in his journal and being content with the fact that he has meditated and released his anger. And that's enough for him - he would never stoop to your level, that's not what he's about. I think thats enough for him. Also, if you weren't a fucking moron you would understand that he's not about violence. I could've sworn he said that he's got love in the face of hate. Moreover, how fucking difficult is it to understand that an artist releases a record at THE TIME WHEN THEY ARE COMFORTABLE WITH THE MUSIC. That's why there is a release date. Because you release things when they are ready. Seriously if that's hard to understand, then you need to be educated heavily. Why is it YOUR decision when the fans hear his shit? YOU didn't write it, garbagefucker. You shouldn't control when it's released. Shit, I write too, and if someone took a half finished piece of work I wasn't comfortable exposing and crammed it in everyone's face I would shit on them extensively. Also, who the fuck do you think you are? Talib is supposed to be someone who's music you are feelin. That demands respect. He blesses you with hours of hot shit and you have the fucking audacity to talk back to him. You have serious ego problems and its because youre a moron, go buy a motorcycle to revitalize your libido. Posted by: REALITY at September 16, 2004 10:45 AM I just bought The Beautiful Struggle at my local CD store today, and it is tight, but I am stilled pissed off. I haven't downloaded any of the songs because I heard about the situation with ImRickJamesBitch, but for months, I have been seeing tracklists with 16 songs on the net, and the released version has only 13. THERE IS NO BLACKSTAR TRACK ON THE OFFICIAL RELEASE. And if I remember correctly, this song was not put on Beautiful Mix CD, so now I have no way of obtaining it, unless Mos had the decency to help out Kwe and put the track on New Danger (comin' out Oct. 12). Not only that, I can no longer find a store online that sells Beautiful Mix CD. Plus, there is some kind of problem with Kazaa so I can't download "Lonely People," yet I can download plenty of songs by other, crappier artists like Lil Jon. So Kwe had to go back into the studio and change stuff and delete songs cuz of Rick James, and the fans suffer. Luckily, I happened to see Kwe live in May at my college and he performed "Lonely People," but now I have no way of getting the song so I can play it whenever I want. RickJamesBitch is an asshole, but I still wish Kwe had handled things differently. Maybe Kwe thought the BlackStar track just wasn't ready yet, and if so, I will respect his judgment, but if this is just so that The Beautiful Struggle would be different from the leaked version so more people would buy it, then Kweli is dead wrong. That's just how I feel. Posted by: CocaineIsAHellOfADrug at September 28, 2004 08:26 PM That's some bullsh#t. When the radio is continually inundated with artist that don't have much to say, we ought to guard against sh!t like this. It's not rocket science, when Artist like Talib don't get the record sales they get dropped by their labels. Then we are left with a barron landscape and forced to listen to artist like Nelly that, in my opionion, don't have any substance in there content. We need artist like Talib to continue to push the envelope and redefine what a real MC is. It comes down to respect. If you got the bootleg just make sure you go cop the original. It's a shame when cats like Talib ain't got at least a GOLD album and you got cats that got one hot song that they release as a single to push a album full of fillers. Kanye might of been bootlegged and still had crazy records sales but look at how much money his label spent on promotions. Every artist ain't gonna get that burn. So Kanye is a bad example. Cats can't even wait until the damn album is done. Bottom line is one day we gonna look up and the only mC left will be the garden variety ones. No more real MC's just face ass Corney Cats. ~Y Posted by: yahya shabazz at October 1, 2004 03:27 PM I am a pervert.
