First Anniversary of the NYC Smoking Ban
One year after NYC banned smoking from bars and almost everywhere else, Gothamist readers list pros and cons of the new world Bloomberg created. My verdict:
Pros: The spectacle of smokers huddled outside every bar, shivering in the winter wind for another fix, highlights just how pathetic their addiction truly is.
Cons: Having to hold my breath when I walk in or out of any restaurant in Manhattan.
Fran Leibowitz is right that anyone worried about clean air should just move out of NYC. But for me it's not so much a health issue as a not having to smell something that smells like ass and causes my clothes and hair to smell like ass issue.

One of the first times I ever went to NYC (1997), some old woman snarled at me for smoking in the street. Not in a restaurant or a bar... IN THE STREET. And she was a mean old bitch too.
I figured that this was the New York Attitude that I've always heard about, so I told her to go to hell. She talked shit back to me, and we went our separate ways, without incident... much different than how it would've gone down in L.A.
That was 7 years ago, and now it seems like the mean old lady is going to have her way eventually. I should quit smoking, but I'm afraid that one day they'll discover that smoking is actually good for you...

as a child of a smoker and someone who has over time developed a mild allergy to said smoke - i just can't believe that knowing what we do know about smoke - that people continue to do it. but i guess - to each there own. but i just wish that the smokers would do it in their homes.

Most smokers started when they were very young, influencable, looking for an image, or stg. Tobacco is probably one of the biggest addictive substance. A lot of people smoke because they are addicted to it now. They would love to quiit smoking, but the addiction is extremely strong. Smokers know that they are commitiing suicide, just as the crack head do, but the fix of the moment is something that a non-smoker has probably never experienced, unless he has used hard drugs. He doesn't know what it is. Tobacco is like any drugs that develops a physical addiction. Your body needs nictone,just like the crackhead needs his fix. It takes a lot in term of support and strenght to quit for the 2 weeks your body needs to clean up from nicotine. These 2 weeks are litteraly hell. At least, they were for me. Once you get past it, it's much easier. But consider smokers like coke and crackheads

I'm glad there's a ban on smoking. I hated when I got home from a concert/show and my clothes reeked of cigarettes. I don't smoke and I shouldn't have to endure the smell and fumes. It's a pathetic addiction. If you gonna smoke, smoke weed. LOL
I wonder what G-Man has to say on this issue.

im a musician... for 15 years i played and did sound in clubs surrounded by cigarette smoke. i hated it, and eventually it turned into me having an aversion to seeing music in clubs. i just associate it with being around cigarettte smoke (im asthmatic too).
now there's this great ban but i have yet to get my head around the aversion. in the back of my head, clubs and bars are still smokey, smelly and nasty places to go.
maybe by the time by rescind on the ban, i'll have my head straight.

Everybody is missing a very important factor in this. No longer may a child smoke his Camel Lights, come home, and tell the parents, "Of course I don't smoke, everyone else in the restaurant did!" Word to Quimby though. I smoke both, but having weed illegal and cigarettes illegal is straight up ass backwards. Good thing I'm residing in Amsterdam.

Do I consider those people? Yeah I consider them foolish.. and foul smelling.. and in denial about their addiction. Yeah, you just do it for the fun, and you can stop anytime! Riiiight!
They are even worse than the ones who are straight-up about soing it cuz they're addicted, cuz at least those folks are rational enough to recognize they shouldn't be doing it.

Okay maybe that was a little harsh, lol.. but to give a (slightly) more serious answer, if you are really just a casual recreational user not in the throes of addiction, then you should have no problem with respecting the current laws and waiting until you can smoke in places where innocent bystanders will not be bombarded by your cancerous stench.
