March 27, 2004Raqiyah Mays Gets Slot on Hot 97Raqiyah Mays, who got fired from NY's Power 105 for proclaiming herself a "racist" on the air and detailing her distaste for interracial relationships, will be heard on Power's archrival Hot 97 this Sunday from 1 to 5 PM, according to the press release her people just sent me. If nothing else, this sure is a clever ratings ploy by Hot 97's boss Tracy Cloherty. Raqiyah's comments have sparked lots of discussion here on our site and elsewhere, and I'm sure lots of people will be tuning in on Sunday to hear some sparks fly. I'm curious to hear which Raqiyah Mays will show up.. will she be using that blunt "I'm a racist" language of her original remarks, or the diplomatic "I just have concerns about the community" tone she switched to after the fact. 3/28/04 EDIT: Listening now.. there's no discussion going on, and her on-air demeanor as she refers to the controversy is really irritating and self-congratulatory. I'm turning to Felix Hernandez Rhythm Revue on 98.7 KISS. Posted by jsmooth995 at March 27, 2004 02:57 AMComments
haha, tracy cloherty, the white woman program manager who dates black men. jeeeeeeez. Posted by: bee at March 27, 2004 09:58 AM lol... Like I said in the last post on this... Power 105's attempts at being the anti-Hot97. Posted by: Belve at March 27, 2004 12:30 PM Haha "dopes and dreams," nice freudian slip in reference to Star and Buc. Star and Buc are screwed by the post-Janet climate of fear, they were probably going to get a slot in NY before that but now its unlikely. I did let that slip in....I thought I had caught it in a rewrite haha... Posted by: Belve at March 29, 2004 10:37 AM I agree with her comments on interratial dating. Posted by: LOLLY at March 30, 2004 10:14 PM "...I don't think that's racist, I think that is stating fact." Your assumptions about that couple had nothing whatsoever to do with "fact," they were no more than empty speculation based solely on your prejudices. Not to mention that none of what you said even has anything to do with whether the couple was interracial. Posted by: Jay Smooth at March 30, 2004 10:33 PM Ditto on Jay's comment. Also, if this white woman HAD married a Harvard-educated black lawyer, I doubt you would be more pleased. Posted by: keto at March 31, 2004 08:19 AM I don't like her because she's a racist. But at least she doesn't hide it. I find a lot of African-Americans to be somewhat racist, to a degree. And yes, there are whites, who are, also. I'm still not going to anybody. Again, she's out-front. Not like say Jesse Jackson, who makes cracks about 'hymies' and tries to deny it. Until he's proven a liar. Or like when he boycotts Budweiser, saying they discriminate but does a complete reversal when they give his sons a distributorship. Or like Spike Lee for his 'racist' comments about Larry Bird, but who now saying he was misunderstood and is sorry. She says what she said and doesn't waver. You know where you stand, as they say. I appreciate the warning! Even LeRoy Jeffries, the controversial racist professor, will talk tough, but is in fact, "working for the man." Receiving a state check for working at a PUBLIC-financed school. She, at least, had the honor to stay in the private sector, where she owes nothing to nobody. And I'd like to know how she feels about what I see as the latest goings-ons, " white guys dating black ladies." I see it everyday. Ask her? My opinion, what two people do is their own business. Posted by: Jon at March 31, 2004 01:23 PM (to continue) I really don't know how you'd define a 'racist' nowadays. I mean if alot of African-Americans see 'racists' as people who want to harm African-Americans, then maybe young people need to wake up. A statistic for you young folks: More young African-American males, in ANY of the years after 1983, have been killed by other young African-American males in the inner-cities of America, then 'Jim Crow' killed in ALL the years combined after the Civil War....And instead of 'no black on black crime' (thats a racist statement), make it 'no crime or violence at all'. --God gave you all good brains, use them. Posted by: Jon at March 31, 2004 03:12 PM Racism is discrimination on the grounds of race, origin or descend. Posted by: Al at March 31, 2004 03:38 PM I see why this country is so messed up..everyone thinks that they know everything but who takes the time to critically analyze points of view or even take the time to understand the words we use, identify ourselves by, and in the case of the DJ with the "racist"comments, even get fired for. I see two things missing with the arguements. The first being that african americans for all its worth cannot be true racist. Racism is not an attitude or emotion its a systematic discrimination based upon race supported by theories of inferiority. So in the case of the DJ and what she said she has no power to stop people from getting married by saying it over her mic. I dont mean to say words arent powerful, but if she was a station owner who didnt like white dj's and this permeated down to hiring practices this would be more of a case of racism. Typcially in this country white males have been the #1 officers of racism. We witnessed this during slavery, post-emanciapation, jim crow, civil rights era, and presently in 2004. And to switch to my other point its one thing to not like interracial couples because you dont like white or black and have notions of why one is not worthy of the other. However, you enter a new arguement when a black woman voices her concern over how she feels when she sees black men who are needed to make strong black families converging time, love, and attention to white women. Lets not forget only a few years ago a black man could be killed for even thinking about a white girl. White men have been scared that we would marry and have children with their precious mothers and daughters ultimatley because whiteness itself would end. I wonder how many people know what happens when any person of color has children with someone deemed white? The genes of color are dominate. Its why Halle Berry who's mom is white is considered a great black actress. I could go down the list. But alas, it would take to long to educate too many people. So as far as this issue goes from own personal point of view...I dont think that the DJ is truly racist, she also doesnt hate white people, but she is frustrated that black men who are likely to not go to college, etc, etc (all the stats we hear too many times to even think highly of ourselves by the age of 25) are building families with women who have been historically the most passive group in our history. White women could have stopped slavery but were too weak to stand up to sexism and now black women who endure racism and sexism have their partners (not often) taken away by the same woman who could never love him like she could. Im a 24 year old educated, stong, black male and I wrote this to let people know its not about black and white...its about truth and love. Love who you want, and if your black and you care at all about your people love and build something with a black women or man. After all the more interracial marriages that occur will only paint the whole nation black anyway. We dont want to erase white people. Posted by: uhdrinalyn at March 31, 2004 04:36 PM This lady is simply telling the truth; hard to take for many. I am a middle-aged white guy and I think that if more people were allowed to be honest about these things publically, there would be much less tension. Many people can't be honest with themselves let alone with others. I applaud Raqiyah for her openness and willingness to start a dialog. Bravo. Posted by: bd at March 31, 2004 05:49 PM to uhdrinalyn: don't worry, nobody is going to erase white people. So marry who you want to marry, regardless of color. And as far as 'blacks could never be racist', that is racist comment in itself. No one's perfect and that includes you. I've heard that arguement too. 'Well, since we aren't in power, we can't ..... .' You know what, alot of those 'Jim Crow's' down south were very poor people. Alot of them were lucky to own a pair of shoes. They weren't all the big property owners and people of power. But guess what, they were still very racist, weren't they? Under your thinking, they couldn't be racist because they were just a bunch of followers and without power. And that would be ridiculous, wouldn't it?...by the way, hispanics are now the biggest minority in America and the fastest growing group of people in America. I honestly believe a lot of these black civic leaders know this and are reacting as such, because the hispanics are going to want their fair share of power...An example: LA county in California is almost 2/3 hispanics, but have very few of the county jobs. African-Americans are I believe 16% of the population, but have over 1/3rd of the jobs. Sooner or later, thats going to change. Posted by: Jon at March 31, 2004 09:02 PM I've read the notion, that black people can't be racist and that expressing an opinion is not like attacking folks KKK-style. That certainly is true. Also no one should deny the history of white racism against blacks in this country. The distinction however is not between instituionalized discrimination, segregation, slavery, or violent extremists on one side and critizing interracial relationships on the other. All those things are the same on different levels of severity and graduation. This assertion can be proven by the fact that probably all these segregationists, supremacists and violent racists would applaude and defend Radiyah Mays remarks. It ends with "Apartheid", but it starts with the notion that certain human beings should not interact with each other because they don't look like you. Just because your not gonna act on your disapproval and assault someone or because you don't have the power to install a institutionalized racist "Apartheid"-system of oppression and discrimination doesn't make your opinion not racist. Posted by: Al at April 1, 2004 03:32 AM Thanks Al. I didn't want to say it, but in a round-about way you did. People can't defend this individual on the grounds that we were mistreated back in history. That was then, this is now. We are now in 2004, not 1619....One thing does bother me. And Al, I wish I knew your take on it. Today, in Sudan and Mauritania, you have 'chattel slavery of blacks' which has become a profitable enterprize for the arab slavemasters of those nation. Yet, the arabs get a free pass. Plus, it was the arabs who were the predominant sales profiteers of slaves to the English and Spanish. Why have they (arabs)always gotten a free pass from the African-American community? And Al, when Bush was slow to put some marines into Liberia, he was called insensitive by the Congressional Black Caucas and black leaders. Same with Haiti when the Haitians threw Aristide out. They all blew a gasket, as they say. Why, during the '90's, when one million people were being slaughtered in Rwanda, two million dead in Congo, two million in Sudan + the slave trade, and children maimed and killed and forced to work the diamond mines of Sierra Leone, these same people were 'quiet as a mouse'. Didn't say a word. Especially since the past administration did save a few thousand whites in Kosovo. But the African people then didn't count. Why their silence then? I'll be interested in your view. Peace. Posted by: JT at April 1, 2004 08:10 AM I know about the slave trade in these Arab countries. I think it is due to the perverted ethics in this part of the world. The Arab world is among the highest ranking in violence against women, rape, domestic violence and yes slave trade (young black girls from kenya, somalia and tanzania are also being sold into servitude to Saudi-Arabia and the United Arabs Emirates). The biggest human rights violations certainly occur in the muslim world (think about the incomprehesibly inhuman practice of Female Genital Mutilation). Sometimes I have the impression that there is more animosity among the black community against the jews than against the arabs for reason beyond me. I think the arabs have gotten a free pass way too long. The fact of the matter is slavery, THE crulest human rights violation thinkable still exists on this planet and it is largely due to arab involvment and demand for it. Posted by: Al at April 1, 2004 10:48 AM Playing the ol' divide and conquer game, Jon? Posted by: keto at April 1, 2004 11:12 AM Why are you blaming the Arabs and muslims for what a radio show host said. In Africa it is not only Arabs benefiting from this slave trade but also Africans, this does not justify it, it just shows that it isn't necassarily a race thing or black and white, because Africans will sell Africans for money and Arabs will sell Arabs for money, You can't blame all the Arabs who are being attacked today by the same American Government that doesn't give two shits about black people in America or abroad. Arabs and muslims are agaisnt slavery, just becuase there are a few capitalist Arabs trying to make money off of slavery or oppression doesn't mean the whole Arab or muslim culture is bad, do you see the racism in that, Arabs and muslims are not the enemy of Blacks but their natural ally, Arabs and Blacks are being attacked by the same people, let's stand together and fight them, many Arabs and Blacks will be in the ranks of the enemy and we have to fight them also, i am an Arab and support the struggle of Africans and AFrican Americans, Jews shouldn't be hated either by the black community, hate the system of capitalism that depends on our division to continue to profit, don't demonize of blame a culture, people or religion for oppression, it is much more deeper than that, and i think the DJ has a right to say whatever she wants, in my opinion it wasn't racist, it was just her opinion, what happened to free speech in this country. Posted by: intifada at April 1, 2004 02:09 PM Female Genital Mutilation is a cultural thing not a religous one, Islam never said mutilate female genitals, it doesn't happen in the Arab world really but in Africa mostly, Egypt, Somalia and other countries and not every body who practices it is muslim, many African nations who are not muslim practice this horrific act, don't blame Islam or Arabs for this, it has been going on a long time and is not a Arab thing, some Arabs do do it even though it has decreased and the Arab country the really only still has it but not legally is Egypt, poor people still do this even though it has been decreased because of education in Egypt and other countries, just to clear things up, islam can be criticized but not blamed for all of these problems in Africa and the middle east, the biggest gun violence is in America, what does that prove or mean? Posted by: intifada at April 1, 2004 02:21 PM On the racisim ish...everyone is racist whether they'd like to admit it or not. I can honestly say that racism is'nt the only problem that is killing our ways...it's HATE. I got some Arab/paki/idk just moved in next door, they got newspapers on their front windows and curtains in their garage. WTF kind of crap is that? Plus me n my bro watched them back their truck up into the driveway took the 3 garbage bags out of the street loaded them into the van then replaced the 3 from the street with 3 other garbage bags from inside the van. A little fishy. Now we got these damn people from frigging Al Qaeda trying some bull$hit on our country. But in a way I don't blame them for all the crap we did to their countries before we were even thought about being brought into this world. It's our country who brought hate into this world and it's our duty to begin to make peace. But if you think about it the president can't really do much considering the government are pretty much the highest of them all. The government is like the eye of a tornado if you think about it. They're in the middle safe and sound watching all the chaos around them such as people dying, yet they sit back instead of pulling us in the middle to save us. If you think the biggest gun problem is in America honey you should think about it a little more. And as for gun violence have you seen what the husbands of these people do to their wives who even show an inch of skin? What about all the other countries in the world? Guns are'nt even made in the US which completely deversifies your belief of all the bull$hit they tell you in the newspapers and on t.v. Do you remember around 9/11 when everyone was worried about the nucler weapons that were heard to be in Iraq? We may be have the biggest gun violence rate from what they choose to share, but that needs to be cleared up.America is completely blind from what the hell is going on in the other countries, the killings, the shootings, the rapes, the robberies, it happens everywhere! Posted by: KD at April 1, 2004 03:27 PM I'd also like to say a few things being a white woman myself. I think that white, black, spanish ,chinese, arab, muslim, or whomever should be allowed to marry whomever they feel is right. Love cannot be stopped in this world today. For one and one reason only...because there is way too much hate in this world to take away someone's lover. As for the racism conversation, everyone will have either the different or the same opinions. As for the statement "blacks could never be racist" is deffiantely racist, I agree. I know many black woman who won't even look at me and some whom will stare at me in digust as if I would ever agree with slavery. I went to school with a black girl whom stated to the class teacher " I don't talk to white people and i'm out!" and proceeded to leave the class and transfer. Is it because she felt too strongly about being taught by a white teacher? I never understood that. I have a best friend whom is a black girl and laughs 'til this day about the angry statement made in the classroom. And if racisim is such a problem then why do the black men/women say the N word all the time knowing if a white person were to say it, they'd prob kick their a$$. And how it's okay for a spanish person to say it as well. I was brought up never to say things such as that, not because it would affend someone, just because it is NEVER necessary to say. Don't get me wrong from time to time I'll speak slang and all of that, but if you think about it...we all sound so damn un-educated. I'm not saying that anyone is a saint, but if America were'nt so lazy things would be different. Another thing is if they stopped making the rich richer the poor would'nt be so poor would they? I love rap and I love their clothing lines, but then they go into acting taking even more of the people's money. Rich people need to start giving to the poor and stop being so selfish with what they are able to show off here and there. Like x-ibit for instance. He takes white black spanish girl boy and pimps their rides. I was speaking about this with my co-workers, how it's good that someone is finally giving back to the fans. well i'm back to work. Posted by: KD at April 1, 2004 03:59 PM keto, I'm not playing no 'divide and conquer' game. Matter of fact, I'm the one asking 'why are young African-American men killing each other at rates that would probably even shake up a KKK Wizard'. And make a blood-thirsty white racist laugh. And none of you guys, who sit on your rear-end and only blame the other guy want to deal with it. Want to even confront this genocide you are doing to each other. Nobody else is doing it. You want to play the finger-pointing game, I can play the finger-pointing game too. I bet you try to be one of those slick dudes that shows off his diamond stud in his ear. Right? Come on, isn't that in fashion? Well next time you put it in your ear, remember some 8 or 9 year old black boy, against his will, had to mine that diamond you are wearing. What use to be mined in South Africa is done predominately in Sierra Leone now. Because its done with even cheaper labor (children v. their will). Your the one 'dividing and conquering'. And your too narrow-minded to know it.....KD, just roll with the punches. I was tutoring a reading class and I had a young African-American boy tell me 'reading is a white thing.' I know, don't they realize we are entering a hi-tech world economy. But all you can do is keep trying. KD, just do your best. Thats all you can do. You are an asset, not a liability...And don't let the hypocrisy get to you. Posted by: jon at April 1, 2004 04:29 PM To KD you make some really stupid statements, like "And if arabs and muslims were against slavery they would'nt make their wives suffer the way they do", this first of all is racist because you are generalizing about Arabs and Muslims that they all beat their wives, you are not in the household of Arab and muslim people, you do not live in the Arab and muslim world so don't talk our of your ass. People all over the world beat their wives, it si not an Arab or muslims thing, white men beat their wives, black men beat their wives, men of all races and religions have been abusive to women, what does slavery have to do with abusing your wife, so if i hit my wife that means i support slavery of the whole African people, this is ridiculous. No one should abuse their wife, but please don't generalize, go to Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Palestine, Jordan and see women walking freely dressed in all types of way, I'm from the middle east, i agree that abuse does exist but at the same time many people in this country speak but don't have proof, you have'nt visited these countries, first visit these countries you are generalizing and talking about and than come back and say what you think, but before you do that, don't embarras yourself with stupid ignorant un-informed remarks, Sexism exist throughout the world, what if Arab women were naked in magazines advertizing for Vicotia Secret that means they are free, showing your pussy to the public means you are free, women should have a right to cover up if they want to and not cover up if they want too, most muslim women choose to cover up because they were raised that way and want to follow their religion that says cover up, because your religion doesn't say cover up doesn't mean it is the only right way, people do things differently, what is freedom to you might not necassarily mean freedom to me. Posted by: intifada at April 5, 2004 04:41 PM KD said, "I wear make-up (not allowed by arab husbands)", another stupid remark by KD, not allowed by arab husbands, what a generalization of a whole people, Arabs specialize in make-up honey, go see Arab women walking the streets of Beirut with make-up you probably never heard of, make-up is very big in the middle east, some husbands don't like it than you should say some arab husbands, men are jealous in all countries, what do you say about all the rape and abuse towards women in America and Europe, it is Arab or muslim men committing these crimes, no it is good old christian men raping women, abusing them. Many Arab women in my family wear make-up and many don't, some choose to some don't, some husbands don't care some do, don't think Arab women are these ignorant animals being bossed around, Arab and muslim women are very educated and can handle their business, they don't need a white women like you KD to tell them how to live, many Arab and muslim women control the household and make decisions whether financial decisions or family ones, please visit the middle east, talk to Arab and muslim people, and then talk.
