John Kerry Hip-Hop Ho Hum

Blah blah, John Kerry says he is fascinated by hip-hop.. maybe I'm just too jaded and curmudgeonly, but why are these proclamations from candidates even considered newsworthy anymore? He's just saying what he's supposed to say, how else would you expect him to answer that?

I'm not saying that Kerry's words were insincere, necessarily.. but Kerry is like the average guy who's on a first date, and his date says she wants to show him some of her poetry. Of course he's gonna say yes, and tell her afterwards that he was "fascinated" by it, what else is he gonna do? Maybe he really did like it, maybe not, but either way his agenda at that point in the relationship is saying whatever he can to score points.. and that's just where Kerry is at in his relationship with us.

I guess it is noteworthy that the hip-hop generation, however that is defined, has come to be recognized as a constituency powerful enough to be worth scoring points with. We'll see if events like the upcoming Hip-Hop Political Convention can work towards capitalizing on that.

The real question is why do I let myself get caught up in pointless conversations like this one?

I think "jaded" is right. when it comes to white males in their 50's, this is the best you're going to get. he respects the music and got it right with the whole freedom-of-speech thing.

better this than an outright denial of its status as music.

At least he's not Gore or Lieberman. Those cats would LOVE to ban a rapper or two just to endear themselves to moderate Dems and Repubs.

Too bad Howard Dean didn't get the nom-- when asked on MTV if he would use his Presidency to get The Fugees back together, he said that he would, and that he was also a fan of John Forte!

Dean also admitted that, while he didn't care for Eminem, he let his kids listen to it.

But then again, they're all politicians. Instead of kissing babies, nowadays they watch "Bulworth" and try to pick up on "the lingo"...

Dude I think this is a BIG deal for the reasons you stated - he's reaching out to the "hip-hop generation", trying to reclaim the youth vote for the democrats, a HUGE step from the old-man centrist posture of Gore. I think its great because it shows he's trying to energize the youth vote and liberal base of his party.

And I think we can thank Howard Dean for that.
