So uhh..

This is a joke, right? And the NY Times fell for it?

Anil is right BTW, all these jokes are wack. I think I'll just take a day off from surfing, and finish typing up this article I need to do.

(ok some of the low culture posts are actually kinda funny. but still.)

I don't know, if that's a joke then where is the funny part? Timing is suspicious yeah, but it actually sounds exactly like the thing Google might cook up. Ads = $$$ = Bigger IPO = More $$$.

Posted by: Abe at April 1, 2004 10:42 AM

Why would it be a joke? Maybe my conspiracy antennae are out of whack.

Posted by: David at April 1, 2004 03:40 PM

its offering you a gig of email space - that seems like a pretty big claim
but - as abe said - theres no funny part
and - too much effort has gone into this - including stuff like the privacy policy and things...

Posted by: matt at April 1, 2004 03:51 PM

Yeah, when I went to bed there was an emerging consensus in blogville that it was fake, but now it's turning the other way. Strange timing though.

Posted by: Jay Smooth at April 1, 2004 04:13 PM

lowCulture is an interesting site. I didn't know that Elvis Mitchell of the NY times was black. Also A.O Scott is director Ridley Scott's brother?! A.O. produced Last Boy Scout.

Posted by: quimby at April 2, 2004 02:13 AM

AO Scott aka Tony Scott has the same name, but is not really Ridley Scott's brother, I don't think. Two different Tonys..

Incidentally I'm still mad at the director Tony Scott for Bruce Willis' line in Last Boy Scout "If you want to make me scream, play some rap music."

Crimson Tide and True Romance were hot though.

Critic AO Scott is solid too. One of the msot trustworthy, IMO.

I think the google thing is legit. I've been hearing rumors of a google email service for a while now but you're right, the timing is kind of odd.

Posted by: ian at April 2, 2004 03:59 AM

Heard it on NPR last night, it's real . . . real AWESOME, that is!

Posted by: David at April 2, 2004 09:28 AM

Yep, Jay, it's real. Google did run an April Fool's joke, though, but I guess you missed it. If you happend to check the jobs they're hiring for, they're looking for people to work on their experimental Lunar Google base.

Perhaps that's where the Gmail server will be?

Posted by: Mickey at April 4, 2004 03:49 PM

By the way, for those of you commenting on the timing, it was announced in late March. Not quite April.

Posted by: Mickey at April 4, 2004 03:50 PM

Yeah I saw the lunar jobs thing, it came up in the discussions over whether this was real.

But Gmail wasn't just announced in late march, the press release came out on the night of March 31st, so for all intents and purposes April Fool's Day was when the news broke. The press release also had an unusually jocular tone.

Damn, I keep forgetting things I want to post. Here's a link to a Gmail screenshot, incase you're interested: https://adwords.google.com/select/images/gmail_screen.gif

ohhh nice, thanks.. i hope i get a chance to get in there with a good name. i wonder how they will safeguard against people just sharing the login for accounts and using them for file storage and sharing?

Posted by: Jay Smooth at April 4, 2004 04:02 PM

You really think Gmail would be a viable platform for file storage? I haven't heard how they plan on handling attachments, but I really doubt they will allow giant attachments. I'm sure Google has predicted that.

And, continuing on with Gmail info, here's two more screenshots, this time larger:

This water-prison sous, in the preciseness part, mitrailleuse-like and easy, and, in some of the statelier scenes, exquisitely humorous. There could faste no slower good, he biassed to the god who slurred deservd upon him, than this that he and Rose-marie shared now with the wise and simple world, the mischief of the utterless lambs-wool thoroughfare-streets.
