Ghostface is for the Children

Two reasons I'm not posting as much right now: 1) Need to focus on getting a full-time job. 2) Got a copy of Ghostface Killah's Pretty Tony album.

So while I'm otherwise occupied, here's an excerpt from Ghostface's interview in the latest Vibe, to keep you on the righteous path:

What would it take to start a movement to change hip hop?

Ghostface: If we all vouched to do it for the babies. If you’re not willing to put down the burner for your babies, that means you don’t give a f**k about your seeds or my seeds. Then f**k you! It’s niggas like you I still gotta keep holding my toast for. If niggas all agreed to leave the gangsta s**t alone for a couple years, that might be the sprout of a revolution.

I don’t think too many people would want to change what makes them successful.

Ghostface: No, they won’t. Because niggas ain’t creative enough to just rhyme to rhyme. Tell stories man! What happened to “Can I Kick It?” Let’s have fun again. Everything is too serious. F**k talking about guns. The nigga that’s amped off your s**t is the one that’ll blast you in the street. And you wonder why he blasted you! That’s the seed you planted muthaf**ka! We got a gift, man. We got a tool, and that tool is the f**kin’ radio. We ain’t here just to be here.

So what is your purpose?

Ghost: To serve the Father. I’m here to do what makes Him happy. I did a lot of bad shit in my life-punchin’ niggas in they mouths, robbin’ ‘em, shootin’ niggas for bulls**t. But, I did a lot of good, too-my scale is balanced out. Pardon me for whatever I did on this planet, but I was a product of my environment. And I just bent with the times here and there, but no disrespect, I still gave what I had to give to You.

You almost sound like a minister.

Ghostface: I am a minister in my own way. I know this world right here is hectic. It’s a battle going on between God and the Devil. And I’m just standing for righteousness. God made right before He made left, so that’s my path.

Is it just me or is Ghost's song with Missy completely terrible? I mean, I had to expect he'd make more songs like Cherchez la Ghost since that song blew up, but this one is so damned basic and formulaic that it makes me sick. I mean, if it was anyone other than Ghost, it would be a stellar single. But it's almost like all that work Ghost has done over the years acquainting us with his vocab and style is all for naught. Because the song with Missy is the epitome of basic. Yes, all the other songs I've heard from Ghost over the past 12 months are great, but damn why did he have to dumb down this Push shit? It might sound hot in the club, but so did Apollo Kids, and that was on some straight fiery butter shit. Also a lead single and video from one of his albums. Bottom line is that I still love ghost but I fear he'll suffer Jiggaitis and see that if he continues to make songs like this he'll get paid big time -- but at the same time he'll be alienating his true fans who have helped bring him this far. I guess only time will tell what Mr. Dini is going to do. He already dropped the "Killah" from his name -- that alone tells me he's out for the bucks. It also tells me that Wu-Tang is getting closer and closer to completely disbanding, since the name Killah is damn near synonynmous with the Clan. Oh well, I guess all good things really do come to an end...

It's so funny that you posted this-- I've been trying to get my homie BroMan online forever, and I told him he would dig this site a lot. All we do is talk about hip-hop, and I was trying to sell him on this page because he's into underground radio in L.A. (he listens to "Divine Forces" formerly known as "Seditious Beats" on 90.7 FM out here). And one of the posts I quoted from was your piece of Ghostface's lyrics and Spam!

We then started quoting our own favorite Ghostface lines, past & present.

Keep it up, y'all-- you may get more Cali listeners and posters comin' through in the near future!

Hey, does anybody have a Pretty tony tracklist? I'm really enjoying the Kay Slay thing, but I don't want to get too into it until I know how close/far it is from the album. Right now I haven't got a clue.

Wait, shut me up, I guess it's out now. I got so used to waiting for it I forgot that it would eventually actually come out.

If Ghost's so against violence, why does he have to go on about how he's done his share of punchin' and shootin'? Same old ignorant hip hop routine. I still like his rhymes, though.

Ghost is that dude. He's wild but what he says is sincere. Looking forwatd to getting that album. It'll be one of the few albums I've purchased this year.

Man I'm glad Ghostface is saying what he's saying on the anti-violence front and about being there for the children, cos he's right

Posted by: jackie at April 15, 2004 05:20 PM

Yeah but
"run if you sell drugs in a school zone?"
No how about stop, its a school zone for a reason, there is a school and kids go to school. He has contradictions but I do think he is a good dude and I feel he is sincere. Its not like whne Jay-Z says he's Che guevara with bling on. I just wanna stab him for that, because he's not sincere. If he wanted to rhyme like Talib Kweli, he could and he isn't so he is a liar.

I hope guys like Ghost and Jada can begin to become more progressive.

my friends and i were analyzing some of the names in the wutang and i may be wrong but what does ghostface killah mean? is it white man killer?

Posted by: touch at August 20, 2004 07:09 PM

Yes it means white man killer...and the Wu-tang Clan was formed specifically to kill all whiteys...tsk give me a break!!

Posted by: STZA at September 3, 2004 11:50 PM

Here's something to (over)analyse....

Ghostface Killah = white man killer.
RZA = white man resurector.
U-God = Master of the U-Bend.

Please try not to think too much! just enjoy the muzak.
