South African Hip-Hop: Skwatta Camp in Slate

A few months ago our radio show had a visitor all the way from South Africa, a top dog from one of their biggest record labels, Gallo Music Group. He told us about one of their recent signings, a rap group he said is one of the hottest acts out down there, and he played one of their tracks for us.

Although he seemed quite trustworthy, I had no way of knowing at the time whether he was just blowing smoke about how big his group was.. but judging by the profile that group, Skwatta Camp, just got in Slate, I guess he spoke the truth.

Soweto Hip-Hop

Shugasmakx and Sliquor strutted into the cafe, baggy jeans hanging low on their hips, their pants bunched up above new pairs of Adidas sneakers. With their hat brims pulled low over their eyes, they looked like kids I might run into on a college campus in New York, Los Angeles, or Chicago.

"Hey, what's up, sistah?" Shugasmakx greeted me with a complicated handshake and coolly plopped down at the table.

Shugasmakx and Sliquor, two of the seven members of the hip-hop group Skwatta Camp, are among South Africa's brightest stars. Their latest CD, Mkhukhu Funkshen, released last year by Gallo Music Group, was the first rap album to go gold in South Africa...

...My two guests have faint memories of apartheid; they were still children when Nelson Mandela came to power in 1994, and they represent the first black South African generation to grow up in a post-apartheid nation.

"We've aligned our music strongly with the economic struggle, with what people are going through," 21-year-old Shugsmakx told me as he sipped on a fruit shake, which he pushed out of frame before I took his photograph, so that he'd look tough. "We are the youth. We have a voice and need to speak. … We talk about things that happen around us, we just reflect the world..."

...Although Skwatta Camp may look and sound American, they are distinctly South African. Their lyrics express disillusionment with the revered ANC of the liberation struggle and caustically criticize the government for leaving "the people" behind in its scramble to the top...

(Note to the author: The proper abbreviation of microphone is "mic," not "mike." No matter what K Solo tells you.)

While we're on this topic I should shout out another cool brother who once visited us from Cape Town, Shaheen of the legendary Bushradio crew, who's been representing conscious hip-hop radio down there for over ten years now.

I'd love to hear their perspective on Skwatta Camp's anti-ANC stance, which I am not equipped to judge. Hopefully someone who lives there will swing by this post and offer their thoughts.

jay what did you think when you heard it? what does it sound like? are there mp3s anywhere? ill stop asking questions now.

Posted by: sally at April 13, 2004 08:51 AM

Jay are there any places I can go to find out what South African's think about hip-hop and what it means to them. Or just African's in general.

Posted by: LALA at April 13, 2004 12:46 PM

There's a mp3 stream of African hip hop on the Senerap page: http://www.senerap.com/index.php That's out of Dakar, though, but says it's representing the continent.

Posted by: jim at April 13, 2004 02:36 PM

So I went to the website and I heard the mp3. I have to be honest and say I didnt really like it. But ill keep looking until I find something I do like. So I went to the Africanhiphop.com forums and its just a trip. I go to Islandmix.com. The reason why i put these websites down is because black people as a whole are a trip.

Can someone please put out an official hip-hop history book. The west indians claim it started from they music. And i didnt know that hip-hop started the exact same time in africa as it did in the US.

WOW (sarcasm). Its amazing one successful genre of music that EVERYONE loves and everybody wants to claim they started it.

Posted by: LALA at April 13, 2004 06:15 PM

I am not South African but I've spent time there (and, in fact, referred Shaheen to your show. Remember me?) Anyway, I think this piece is really reactionary. The persistent poverty, disenfrancisement and disillusionment that exists in South Africa is a direct result of the remnants of five-decades of apartheid government -- it is not the fault of the ANC. Those young men were at least 10 or 11 when apartheid fell -- certainly old enough to have more than "faint memories" of that brutal system. It's unrealistic to expect that 10 years of "freedom" would erase nearly a half-century of tyranny. Somebody ought to be checking them about that -- and the media ought to be putting it in perspective rather than giving the misleading information put forth in this article.

"The reason why i put these websites down is because black people as a whole are a trip."

What does that mean?

Posted by: N56 at April 14, 2004 07:58 PM

Well if you go to the websites and read the comments in the Forums. It would make more since.

Oh dont get me wrong because im black and im just sayin my people as a whole are really funny when it comes to each other.

Posted by: LALA at April 15, 2004 02:45 PM

Person LALA I've never come across so much bullshit in a post b4. Your people as a whole? wtf is that all about? like your family? your boys? come on dont paint with a dirty brush.

I'm African and I've read and still read the same forums u mentioned. doesnt lead to a "tripped out" conclusion. take your finger out. do you smell coffee?

We can't learn to spell from Solo anyway, bird is spelled "bird", NOT "brid" as he told us.

Posted by: Porn at April 15, 2004 10:39 PM

Woah, Woah, hold your water. I cant say black people are funny.

Or are you trying to say that because your african and Im a black american your people are not my people?

Wow you must love to argue what you said makes no correlation to what I said at all.

And if your trying to say that me being black american and you being african (we) are not people Thats cool with me.

I really dont care. I have west indian friends, black, and african friends, and I consider them my people and personally I wouldnt consider a person like you my people. So you can have your corner of the world if you want it.

Or did you want me to include BET along with the other two websites. Okay done. BET.com, Island mix.com and Africanhiphop.com.

Or are you mad because I said I did not like the south african hip-hop and because everyone is trying to claim hip-hop.

Hmmm! Please dont shoot blanks. Your post is irrational and ambiguous.

Frankly YOU ARE STUPID.

BAKA BAKA BAKA BAKA! Obifromsouthlondon.

hey sabrina,
i'm south african, writing this from cape town. many of the same people who fought apartheid are now critical of the ANC government. there is widespread dissatisfaction with their post-apartheid policies. yes, colonialism and apartheid created this extremely unequal society - but the gap between rich and poor has got even wider since 1994, because the ANC bargained away most possibility for really changing the way things work here during the transition to democracy. now we face many of the same problems people in the rest of the world do - fierce market-driven capitalism and neoliberal bullshit. at least a third of south africans live in abject poverty. skwattacamp are a necessary voice.

I'm really taken aback by the response to just one line in the Skwatta Kamp story.I'm a young, black South African sister living in Cape Town. I'm a follower of Hip Hop in general and have observed SA hiphop taking off in recent years.Don't get me wrong I enjoy listenin to Skwatta...those boys have mad skills and are really witty. And although their music is concious (as opposed to commercial bling, bling stuff) they aren't necessarily on some anti-ANC tip. What one hears in their music are thoughts that run through a lot of young adults' minds. Bearing in mind that those boys and a lot of people in their early 20's have benefited immensley from 10 yrs of democracy (access to private schools, living in the suburbs, affording overseas trips), myself included, one cannot expect blind allegiance to the ANC. Instead we are faced by struggles different from those our current leaders faced. That of retaining one's African identity while riding the globalisation wave. This is a socio-economic struggle that a lot of young South Africans are very vocal about.

And no SA does not claim to have given birth to hiphop, but we have chosen to embrace it as a medium of expression. As for Skwatta soundin American...try and get hold of their album: Mkhukhu Funkshen. It does not sound American at all. The issues that are raised (although not exclusively South African) are from an SA perspective...by proudly SA voices.(who, like a lot of SA youth...happen to be pissed off at the way the goverment ignores pressing youth issues)

Check out rage.co.za. It's a good site for explorin South African youth culture. Has articles on SA hiphop and some links.

I WILL LIKE TO SEE THE SOUTH AFRICAN HIP-HOP BEEING ON THE SAME LEVEL AS THE AMERICAN HIP-HOP. DO YOU THINK THAT IS POSSIBLE, IF YES TELL ME HOW ARE YOU GONNA MAKE THAT POSSIBLE.

Posted by: EDGAR at May 6, 2004 07:20 AM

South African Hip-Hop will not be on the same level as American hip hop since as it is we are on a higher plane. The only difference is that while record companies are willing to put money on bling bling and the like, they are equally unwilling to put money where they mouths are when it comes to real issues as expressed in South African hip hop.Secondly,South African hip hop has long outgrown souped up cars, slutty women and fictitious riches for what's really happening out there.I have a few words for American hip hop as far as I and many South Africans who love hip hop are concerned:"American hip hop = "FONG KONG HOP".Loosely translated:"FAKE HOP".

American Hip-Hop will never be Fake Hip-Hop no matter how Bubblegum, processed, and pop it sounds.

Dont be mad because Finally Rappers are getting paid. I dont know about you but I dont want to hear rappers talkin about how hard their life is 24/7.

Once South Africans get what they deserve as far as equality and money. They will be singing about the same things.

Dont hate. American Hip-Hop will never be fake.

Posted by: LALA at May 20, 2004 12:14 AM

SA hip-hop is the best that ever happened in the industry. Cashless society, young nation, Skwatta kamp, Amu, Proverb, Selwyn, snazz, h20, Spex, goddesa, the list goes on. and when it comes to Freestylin', not even Eminem can do better. SA is hip-hop has just started to boom, and no, we don't disrespect women, we don't talk pussies and dicks, no fuckin' about how much cash we have.

Hip-Hop is a lyrical struggle and that's how it must be. not bitches and pussies. Hip-Hop started as revolutionary, and that's how it should be.

And as far as i'm concerned, SA Hip-Hop is keeping it real. Fuck all ya opinions. It rocks and that's it.

Posted by: Tuelo at May 26, 2004 05:10 AM

Lala.
It is fake. just look at Nelly and look at young nation, spex or amu. look at wu-tang and look at Skwatta kamp. Look at The Roots and check out cashless society. which ones are better? Without a doubt, it's SA hip-hop baby. We are gonna take the world by storm man. Nelly disrepects women. WU TANG RAPS ABOUT SHIT THAT PEOPLE DON"T UNDERSTAND or KNOW. The roots are trying too much to be revolutionary and they forget that it comes naturally. The only Rappers that reach our level are: Dead Prez, Talib kweli and 20 Mos defs. SA hip hop rules baby

Skwatta Rocks. Anybody who has one bad thing to say about their music doesn't know shit. They are original and do not sound American or dress like them. The only disappointment I got was at their latest show in Pietermaritzburg where Flabba who I love dearly acted as if he would have given both his arms not to be there. His peformence was wack and Bozza was truly inja yakhona, he was full of energy and you could have sworn that Shuggasmaxx was some hyper active child and we totally loved them both. To Bozza and Shugga, without them the show would have been a total flop.Initial L must stop acting like his all that. Me and friends tried to get his autograph and wasibuka ngati amakaka but we still love him anyway, next time be nicer.

Yall talk about fake like yall know whats real. If you dont live here then you dont know. Oh and American money is worth alot more than African money so when the South Africans really start gettin paid. They'll sing about the same thing. Trust me.

wsup, good to c that u guys are doin some reviews on skwatta kamp, I think it's important to say just how well skwatta have done, not only for themselves but for SA hip hop in general, they've taken it from a small minority genre and played a big role in pushing hip hop to one of the most recognised genres in SA which is no mean feat also, in South Africa american culture is very prominent in our youth society, i think it is important to realise that american youth culture has penetrated hip hop in SA and this isn't neccessarily a bad thing. Look out for ENTITY tight stuff

Hey Sabrina.

I find it very interesting that your views re South Africa and our 10 years of freedom are so strong – especially since you don’t even live here! How sure are you that the media is giving misleading information because as a South African myself, I find it quite accurate and real. Perhaps 10 years of freedom cannot fully erase “half a century of tyranny” - but the hope that our freedom has given us can do even more.

If you did live here, you would find a country full of positive people and find yourself surrounded by absolute charm, pride and vision. I’m not sure where you get your info from as it seems quite obvious to the rest of the world.

There are not many countries that can say that they have been through what we went through, over-come it and still managed to celebrate ten years of Democracy. What’s more, there are not many countries that can say they managed to do it all peacefully. God knows what could have happened in South Africa, my point is - it didn’t.

Does that make us “disillusioned”? I'm not saying we don't have problems and hurdles ahead of us, but who doesn't? I guess the only people that can’t seem to get over the effects of the apartheid government are the people who “think” they know all about it.

Misconception#1
Rapping and hip hop is not d same, hip hop has multi dimensions "multi faceted"...it comprises of elements: Emceeing, dJing, graffiti, and breakdancing. Some consider beatboxing as a 5th
element.

Emceeing is the closet thing 2 rap, coz u crib crawlers need sum sort of association 2 understand concepts afer all so there....imo break i down even further.....but on my next lecture.....so long

LOCAL HIP-HOP STAR POCKETS INTERNATIONAL CELEBS

It's unheard of that a South African hip-hop rapper's music is found in the
hands of celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Oliver Stone or Fat Boy Slim. Up
to now, that is.

South African hip-hop sensation, JAS, recently returned to South Africa to
introduce his 12 track CD, Affirmative Reaction, after enjoying widespread
success in the UK. Like many young South Africans, JAS opted to spend a few
years abroad to save up some cash, and landed a job at one of London's
leading security companies.

His first job was as a bodyguard for Kylie Minogue during her Fever tour at
Wembley. While freestyling with a group of rappers backstage, William
Orbit, an international label producer for stars like Madonna and Pink,
immediately offered to sign him. A few of his tracks were produced and
mixed and in true guerilla marketing style, his fan base started selling
EP's from the back of their cars and at clubs where he was performing.

"I was dumb-struck after the first night of sales - we'd sold more than 500
copies, and some of those now belong to Angelina Jolie and Sharon Stone!"

He landed another body guarding job at a Westlife concert, and found himself
freestyling with Ali G backstage. "We were having loads of fun! The next
moment I looked up and there were people like Gareth Gates, Brian Adams and
Richard Branson laughing and clapping hands - it was the most surreal moment
of my life!"

After a few months of club performances and rubbing shoulders with a slew of
who's who, JAS gave up his Notting Hill pad to come home to Cape Town. "I
wanted to get back to my roots and introduce my sound here."

"While I'm developing my career in South Africa, I'd also like to pave the
road for other upcoming young artists. This country has a wealth of
world-class musicians, and I'd love to see that the industry develops more.
As additional opportunities are created, more artists will start performing
and subsequently better music will be produced. The result is a
higher-caliber product for music-buying consumers".

The saying 'a prophet is not without honour, except in his own country'
unfortunately rang true for JAS. Back in South Africa, he struggled to
break into the local music market. "The UK hip-hop scene is highly
developed and extremely popular. They also have a completely different
approach to producing records. Over there, three tracks are enough to
produce a single, but in South Africa that specific market is saturated. A
record label here will only consider taking you on if you can produce a full
album."

And that's what JAS has now set out to do by single-handedly producing his
own album. JAS and a few other associates namely Johnny D and Charl G, are
also in the process of opening a street-level production studio. The
concept, which is unique in South Africa, allows young artists to walk into
the studio off the street, pay an affordable once-off fee, choose one of
JAS' tracks and vocal over it.

"They walk off with a demo! This is our way of creating opportunities for
young artists who can't afford studio time. Once they have a demo in their
back-pocket, it so much easier to promote themselves."

He classifies his music as funk with its roots deeply embedded in old-school
hip-hop and his album, Affirmative Reaction, already has local underground
hip-hop heads fending for JAS. The 13-cut collection delves into the mind
of a witty, warped, and extremely talented wordsmith and his controversial
songs will strike a chord with a multitude of hip-hop loyalists. Although
produced primarily by himself, the EP sees the likes of Bruce Muzik who
co-produced Jerusha's hit singles, pulled in as sound engineer and local
sound wunderkind Johnny D as the other genuis behind the music.

"When I'm on-stage, I focus on working with the audience. I like to
pin-point a group, usually the guys standing with their hands in their
pockets who - initially - don't even sway to the music. But what a rush
when you do get that desired reaction!"

With his record being such a huge success in the UK, JAS and the band souled
out has been invited back to further pursue a musical career there. "But I
first want to launch our full-length CD in South Africa and then go back for
performances."

He adds that when things seem tough back home, his success and popularity in
the UK keeps him going. "Over there they don't look down on you if you're
a foreigner. The industry appreciates your musical talent and your ability
to entertain."

"I miss the UK in the sense that it's a doorway to the rest of Europe.
There are stunning clubs, the environment is extremely cosmopolitan and
Europeans have an overwhelming sense of open-mindedness. Back home I've
found that artists are still stereotyped."

Over and above his regular rehearsals, promotional gigs and negotiations
with industry contacts, JAS holds positions as DJ Jason Scott at Good Hope
FM. "Every good DJ is a frustrated musician," he adds jokingly.

But when the On-Air light goes off, JAS turns to what he loves best - airing
socially conscious views through his thought-provoking lyrics.

Congratulations to Swatta Kamp for their Source Award Nomination and wish them the best of luck. I don't really dig them but this is good for our hip hop. I personally feel Optical Illussion, Proverb and Zubz and Tongogara's production rocks (9th Wonder comparisons anyone?)

I am in love with Swatta kamp album. back in February of 2004, I visited Jo'burge for a documentary film I'm working. When I heard, track number 9 on the album, I was blown away. I was like who is that? They sound HOT! I didn't understand what they were saying but then they translated with the next verse, I was just amaze. The beat is off the hook. before I left to go back to the states, I had to have thier album. I swear to you, I listen to the same song for weeks at a time. Then something told me to listen to the rest of the album. Once I did that, man, I don't have any words. I am really lost for words. This great is out of control. Their music is soooo refreshing because they are saying something. They have a message. I really hope they come to NY, USA and blow these so call mc's/ rapers out the box. Track number 15 just explains what I'm saying about their skills. Yo, wasn't even a big rap fan until after listening to this album it just gave me a whole new outlook on rapping. I really wish more USA rappers was like this.

Then you have them doing rap with a rock apeal with track 18. Oh, my goodness, the song is the shit! It just shows how diverse they are.

Then they took "taxi" the tv sitcom, added a hot beat on top of that with some hot lyric PLUS saying something positive or thought provoking. Yo, who is the guy saying" this is too good"? I loveeee his voice. He really brings a good sound to the group. The women in the group is really representing with her voice. I sing on thei side and one of my goals is to sing with this group. I really believe one day I will. Thank you Swatta kamp for making excellent mind boggling music. I will be a forever fan.

One last thing, my favorite track was 9 until I heard the hot, hot , hot track number 17. That shit is hot! It's burn up! This is my athem. Everytime, I listen to shit, I get emotional, hype inspired, motivated and happy. The song just represents who I am and what I am trying to do in life and that is leave my mark before I die. Just like he said, "I won't give up until I see my death certificate". Just listen " look inside you and see a star.." Listen to what the sista is reciting. Yo this group is no joke. They are serious. You got to get their album. They are really inspirational. "Leaders of the struggle " is just what you are. I know Black people in america have a bad rap but please know they are many , many of us making shit happen. We are concious and aware of the struggle. we are just like you, trying to make it happen. This song is so hot. I am going to stop writing now. I can go on and on.

Peace

I am a South African. I recently got into Skwatta Kamp by buying Mkhukhu Funkshen and Wasumkhukhu. I love their for their great music and socially aware lyrics. I wouldn't say they are anti-ANC, they do comment a lot on the problems in this country, and they comment on many of the ups. Luckily we have a healthy democracy where criticism of some of the government's policies does not equate to criticism of the whole government.

yeah Skwatta Kamp rocked and i agree on the fact that they have taken SA hip-hop to another level. I would say thanx to Skwatta for the fact so much mo ppl are now actually recognising hip-hop. But If any of those cats were to go individually I seriously believe they wouldnt make it.Skwatta is what we hip hop fans of SA consider as commercial hip hop, but da greatest Hip hoper right now here in SA must be the PROKID- if u guys are lookin for metaphors, similes and great punchlines then that is the MC to listen to!

I am a South African WHITE sister, and I am a big fan of Skwatta Kamp... They are proudly South African, and the whole American/ South African Hip-hop story is ridiculous. Why can't we be proud of our own country without putting other countries down?

And LALA, whoever you are... stop SHOUTING! If you don't like South African Hip-hop, than stop coming here and saying how much better American hip-hop is! Stay in america with your 'people' and listen to your own hip-hop that you like!

Leave us with our SA Hip-hop in our "Corner of the world"
