Hip-Hop and Native Americans
Cristina Verán (how come she doesn't have a blog?) on hip-hop and American Indians:
Rap, Rage, REDvolution
Conjuring up the charge of cavalries and natives on some futuristic-western warpath, OutKast stormed the 2004 Grammys in February with the brazenness of the former, while bedecked as the latter. Resplendent in neon green Halloween-Hiawatha approximations of Native American regalia—fringe, headbands, and feathers—Andre and Big Boi rose before smoking teepees, prancing proudly through their chart-slaying "Hey Ya!," the chorus of which is itself evocative of powwow singing. Was it some kind of tribute, or did the winners of the Album of the Year Grammy unwittingly channel Al Jolson's "Mammy"?
It's a question many Native Americans have considered, responding promptly to launch boycotts and Web petitions voicing their collective displeasure. CBS's brief, lukewarm apology—"if anyone was offended"—brought zero resolution, particularly since OutKast themselves refused even to comment. Two months later, people are still waiting; during an April 1 protest outside the network's Minneapolis affiliate, one person was arrested.
"Janet Jackson's right breast was exposed for three-quarters of a second and both the House and Senate convened hearings immediately, [yet] vulgarisms about Native Americans are prime-time fare . . . and no one does anything," notes Suzan Shown Harjo (Hodulgee Muscogee/ Cheyenne), executive director of the Morningstar Institute, in her "Open Letter to Michael Powell, Andre 3000 and Big Boi," first published in Indian Country Today.
Hip-hop, meanwhile, is speaking to the issue as well. "[It's] currently the most popular music on the reservations," explains Don Kelly, executive director of the Native American Music Awards. Litefoot (Cherokee), NAMA's Male Artist of the Year for 2003, takes up the fight with his new single "What's It Gonna Take": "We only good with feathers on/Don't exist when they're off/I punch the remote/feeling like my whole race is a joke..."
I'm surprised that in her list of hip-hop's iffy Indian references she left out Slick Rick's "Indian Girl." But maybe it is a wise choice to pretend that one never happened.
Regarding Outkast's silence on the issue, I did get Sleepy Brown to talk briefly about the Grammy thing, in an interview you'll hopefully be able to read soon.
Posted by jsmooth995 at April 21, 2004 04:43 AM
If my memory serves me correct, I do not think Big Boi was part of the questionable act. I'm nitpicking but journalists should try and get the facts right.
Posted by: Cal Ulmann at April 21, 2004 11:31 AM
When I saw this performance, I could NOT believe what I was seeing -- my jaw literally dropped. It was so tasteless. I was more shocked to find that it took at least 2 days for this to surface in the news, while the Drudge Report had shown Janet's nipple w/in 2-3 hours of the performance. My respect for Andre definitely went down a notch. I look forward to hearing what Sleepy Brown had to say.
Posted by: leftcoastchic at April 22, 2004 01:58 PM
Even if Adre thinks he didnt do anything wrong, He should still apoplogize just for the simple fact the Native American people are not represented anywhere in America. But another thing is do they want to be represented in America. And I have a hard time believing black people would do that
"extreme antagonism toward Litefoot—and perhaps all Native Americans—from the start. "As soon as we came out onto that stage," he says, "people began to spit at me, throwing up their middle fingers and screaming racial obscenities."
I would also like to know if Native Americans even like America or even want to be apart of it.
regardless OutKast should apologize. Because its the right thing to do.
Posted by: LALA at April 22, 2004 01:59 PM
I must also object to statements in this article about how
"As hip-hop emerges as an empowering voice for indigenous youth, mainstream rappers still objectify Indian country".
That is a total fallacy. Why would hip-hopers allow Eminem and Jin, to be recognized but not American Indians. I think there are other motives to this. And the woman writing the article sound like she knows nothing about black people at all.
I personally believe we are a very accepting race to all people. But this is my OPINION!
Posted by: LALA at April 22, 2004 02:05 PM
Of course Natives are objectified in hip hop. Because of this country's history with native americans it's hard to mistake objectifying Indians unless you make an effort to take a closer look. Soceity at large doesn't do that. Rappers aren't doing that, but even if they did, would society or hip hoppers follow suit? It's unlikely.
Posted by: liz at April 23, 2004 03:08 PM
I would just like to say that it was not just Andre 3000, but as a member of the group Outkast Big Boi knew, I am sure, what the performance was. As for what happened to Litefoot when he went onstage, that came str8 from him so I am positive he would not lie. Also what does not wanting to be a part of America have to do with anything? Has a Nation of Native AMericans ever said they do not want to be a part of America? We are a part, and we are trying to survive. Did anyone question black people in the civil rights movement if they wanted to be a part of AMerica? People need to educate themselves about Native Americans before they try to criticize something written about Native Americans, you come off sounding ignorant. As for "LaLa" saying this woman knows nothing about blacks, what do you know about Native Americans? The view of Native Americans is twisted, and it gets worse on the east coast, before trying to judge an article, or do anything such as ANdre did, stop and learn about the people first, and then speak about it. Do not make assumptions, Native Peoples are a part of America, and we deserve the respect for surviving much more atrocities than any other race in AMerica, and if you need to know what I am talking about read a history book, not the ones in school, but a history book written that leaves nothing out, boarding schools, massacres. Genocide has been tried right here in America, but we here nothing of it. Cultural Holocaust has taken place on american soil, but do we talk about it? Learn your history before you judge someones actions.
Posted by: redmessiah at April 30, 2004 01:27 AM
I must say this to "redmessiah"
1. I know my history and I know the history of every other race of people that have been oppressed and Native Americans are not the only group of people. And yes thay have had it very bad but I think the Jewish people should have that title also.
2.I specifically said that Andre and BigBoi should apologize because what they did was wrong. I find it amazing how you can pont out every single negative thing I said and Ignore the fact that Out KAst should apologize.
3. I dont think anything bad of Native Americans adn I never will. I do know about Native Americans and I of all people should know not to believe everything in the history books.
4. That bitch that wrote the article dont know shit about black people because if she did she would not have made those comments. And I dont care what you say no black people would do something such as that to Litefoot. I say he is lying. I refuse to believe it until I see evident proof not just someones word. Until then.
5. Red? compared to my skin you look white.
Posted by: LALA at May 10, 2004 12:37 PM
I must say this also. If black people only wanted to see black people rapping there would be no "JIN" or "Beastie Boys" or "Eminem". I have the utmost respect for your people and your culture and would never do anything to take away your pride. If your a rapper and your good you will get signed because in HIP-HOP color doesnt matter.
You are the voice of your people and Im waiting to hear what you have to say.

I was at a discussion panel back in March and this topic was brought up. The discussion panel was made up of Native American Hip Hop artists and the crowd at the discussion was 2/3 black. A very intelligent young black man stood up and opened up with "I think that what Outkast did was good...because.."..and went on to point out how many acts are signed to large record labels because they're indeed IGNORANT to alot of issues. But you can't really hold that against them as they're signed to make music, not political statements. Basically, what the young dude was trying to say was that, the good in the situation is that...by doing something so completely ignorant as dressing up like a fake "injun" on tv...and getting the backlash that he has from it, maybe will force him to get educated on what real native american dance is about, so that he can know what NOT to do next time.

I SOME WHAT REMEMBER THAT WHOLE PERFORMANCE..BUT I DONT THINK ANDRE 3000 REALLY INTENDED TO ASSAULT ANY ONE. I READ THAT SOMEONE SAID THAT HE SHOULD APOLIGIZE..I DONT AGREE WITH THAT...IF YOU TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT ANDRE 3000 HE DOESNT USUALLY DRESS NORM..NOT THAT THERES ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT...BUT ITS COOL, HES DOING HIS OWN THING, JUST THE LET THE MAN SHINE.......IF ANYTHING I LIKED THE WHOLE OUTFIT..BECAUSE PEOPLE NEED TO REMEMBER US AND OUR PEOPLE AND WHAT HAS HAPPENED...CAUSE IM FROM NEW JERSEY AND I HAVENT SEEN AN INDIAN IN A WHILE..AN INDIAN WHO KNOWS HIS/HER ROOTS..............ANYWAY MY NATIONAILITY IS VERY COMPLEX...IM PURTO RICAN (TIANO INDIAN), CHEEROKEE AND BLACKFOOT INDIAN.......ANYHOW IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR MY ROOTS AND IM HAVING DIFFICULTIES TRACING MY ANCESTRAL ROOTS....JUST NEED SOME HELP ON FINDING OUT WHO I AM......

Posted by: Native Youngster at May 15, 2004 08:52 PM
Let me begin by stating that I am VERY proud of my Native heritage. It bothers me when I read comments from people who claim to be fighting for the respect of their heritage by using racial slurs and insults mixed with useless profanity. In our country, neither the Native American nor the African American Peoples have been recognized with a national holiday in their honor. (Even though there's a day for Groundhogs...a rodent gets a day and WE don't???Think about that.) Instead of standing against one another, let's stand together and fight for respect and recognition as two of the most persecuted races in our nation's history. We deserve a day set aside to honor those who fought and died proudly so we would be recognized as the proud people we continue to be. The OutKast debacle serves as a reminder of how an entire race of people can be hurt by ignorance-whether intentional or accidental. Should OutKast apologize?...I think so, not just for the side-show itself but also for not educating themselves on Native American culture BEFORE they ever pulled on a moccasin. It doesn't end with OutKast because it began with choreographers, costumers, dancers, network reps....That performance could have been prevented by several others so there should be several apologies made. It's about respect-of our heritage and our history. Without respect it's only a matter of time before our heritage will be swept away and those who fought and died protecting our ways will have died in vain and be forgotten, lost to our future generations. They paid a huge price and we owe it to all of them, "Black" or "Red", to be proud of who we are and fight to preserve our heritage. We all bleed the same color and American soil is saturated in the blood of our ancestors. Let's fight for them to be honored properly and educate our children so they can be as proud of where they came from as they are of where they're going.
I sincerely hope "Native Youngster" is able to see past his hatred and embrace his true Native spirit so he can focus his energy on a positive fight for his People and someday become a respected leader in the Native community and America.

"if we keep bitchenin bout this little issue then that is what we'll be...some wineing bitchez."
You see it as "wineing bitchez", I see it as being a group of people who feel they are worthy of respect and demand it from others.
It's a sad state when a person couldn't care less that their entire heritage is being ridiculed.
Posted by: b-c at June 2, 2004 12:46 AM
Oh, wow
I am deeply saddened by what i just read. This is my first time logging on to this site, I was looking for Information about my Native American Background and this is what I stumbled on. I'm African American and Mohawk/ Cherokee Native American. Through my research I learned that back in the day if one was Native American and Black it was better to say one was black the native american and that really hurt me. I thought that was something of the past but it is obviously not. When are we going to stop hating one another, when is this going to end. I did not notice what Out Kast did that was wrong, becuase I don't know enough about my native american heritage to even notice it. Andre has always dressed weird, but he obviously offended our nation so he should apologize. I don't think that that is bitching at all, we must stand up for our culture. I used to believe that native american no longer existed, that we didn't have a culture, a language, pow wows and other things because i was raised as African American. My grandfather was the only one that could tell me all i need to know about it and he died before i could. What I do know is the HIP HOP CULTURE IS NOT RACIST. To lite-foot, I do believe what he said happened because people who do stuff like that, not just black people or white people, but PEOPLE WOULD DO THAT especially since there is so much still existing Racism towards our culture. The part that I don't understand is WHY are Native Americans and African Americans FIGHTING WITH EACH OTHER, we fought the same battle, been the same racism and slavery, we both lack recognition and the history is not told right for either races; so why are we hating each other instead of working together. A silent yell never gets heard, most of the black community know nothing about native rappers and singer. I'm actually trying to go in the industry and I have a pretty good chance, I'm at the studio and I'm really doing my thang. The beat that I am singing to sounds like it could have dance steps that are Indian, not native american. You know how a lot of hip hop songs has dance steps from INDIA, well i'm not doing that I was looking to do actual Native American Dance step and REALLY represent for my people. Why should we keep hiding, I will not sit back and let our culture be swept away,Its time to take back our culture and let people know that we are not extinct and the fastest way to do that is through hip hop. Janet Jackson is part Native American, so is the rock, tina turner, salli Richardson, Ashanti, Aaliyah, rapper Sole, Tina Turner, James Earl Jones, Jesse Jackson,Eartha kit, philcia rashard(the mom on the bill cosby show)possibly Master P. These are all famous mixed native American that made it into the industry and are still proud of their heritage, but I believe that somebody needs to FORCE America to realize that WE STILL EXIST AND WE WILL FOREVER.

I'm sorry for your situation, but I don't consider Jesse Jackson, Janet Jackson, etc as Native American.
They are African American and shoud be proud of even if they possibly do have some % of native american in them. They may be a % of something else as well.
Let's not exploit the Native American heritage.
Posted by: indigirl at July 7, 2004 08:17 PM
In regards to the performance, it was offensive only in its utter ignorance and insensitive portrayal of NDN culture. Much in the same regard as wearing blackface. Ted Danson anyone? I haven't seen native people at any presentation wearing black face or simulating plantation work while singing gospel and picking cotton; regardless of their eccentricity or style of dress. Perhaps Andre/Outkast/crew thought it was a way of honoring a culture and it seriously backfired. As of right now I don't know, it should be interesting to find out and I haven't really kept up on this as of late. It still isn't right though.
The difference politically between red and black is that they have different goals socially in my opinion. In "Custer Died for Your Sins", Vine DeLoria outlines a concept that is interestingly simple. The Black Civil Rights movement desired equality with the majority in the United States. The Red movement wanted to maintain the culture that they had from time immemorial, through the preservation of native sovereignty and revival of the old traditions. A big difference that is possibly illustrated in this debacle and the ongoing debate in red/black relations.
As far as whining about the situation or possessing Native Pride. It is harder to speak up than be silent. If the event did not offend you, then say that. Do not criticize those that were offended, eventually you will have something to say. On the same token, insulting people is not constructive and demonstrates only parallel ignorance. Have the same courtesy as you would expect.
LALA,
Remember that NDN's didn't get any real say in whether we are American's or not. We were invaded and have no country to return to. Liberia is where some of the slaves that wanted to return to Africa have gone. We NDN's didn't get citizenship in this country until the 20's as well.
In comparison to the Jews. They have a country that they can call their own as well. A driving concern in Indian country is the loss of culture due to the assimilation of our youth. There is no base for NDN people to return to, with the exception of the reservation. In Israel they have Israeli media, religion, lifestyle, and the ever pressing war to enforce their jewish identity. In the US the NDN people are in-undated with American media. As well, our treaties have been broken and continue to be. Our people are still imprisoned for political reasons (Leonard Peltier). Our land is still being raped (Cobell v. Norton). Our rights to self-govern are still being questioned (Inyo Cty. v Bishop Paiute).
Eminem may be popular with some African American communities, but I would venture that the demographic that purchases his albums en masse is not African American. Even if they did due to their minority status they could not post the record sales that Em possesses, statistically speaking. Using the popularity of a recording artist to demonstrate the opinion of a race, is fallacious due to the enormous number or variables. In other words there is alternate causality.

This comes a bit late but I would suggest if you have not read material on the topic of individuals of African and Native American blood then you should. You would be missing out on a hidden history that would allow you to understand why there is such a separation between the two groups. Try Black Indians by William Loren Katz, it's written with young adults in mind but filled with information for anyone to start their own research and journey.
Also, I do not agree that recognizing part of someone's blood heritage reduces the pride of any other heritage associated with the person.

I found this site browsing around and even though alot of people won't see this I think that alot of america is terrified of tha native americans because of all tha shyt that we been through,we had it harder than anybody in america for real, natives getting wiped out for land and back then there generations wanted the natives to not exist.I read it in an article.the white people didn't want a native voice rising up and reporting that they raped, killed, and threw natives in jail for no reason. If they didn't kill all tha natives for land, then I think that we would be the largest group of people living in america right now.I thought about it and whatever I say as a native american tha white will not allow natives to rise ever and thats how the white people back then wanted it.Look, I'm from a small rez in south dakota and everywhere I go there's hatred for natives cuz we was suppose to be wiped out.but not likely my daddy's great grand pappy wanted me to say all this shyt.I'm hoping that people in tha ghetto's of america recognize my voice because tha rez is a spread out ghetto.people not giving a damn, sum natives I know don't drink or smoke or do drugs or anything, but I was poor my whole life raised by drunken fools not knowing or giving a damn why they should take care of me.I got mad love for my native people and I'm fittin to rise but I know somebody will kill me in tha future for talking loud for my native people just like everyone else has.I mean do you really think we wanted people coming into our territory back when columbus came,I personally think he got drunk and lost and found people who invited them in and like my grandma says tha white devil turned out in them.so he betrayed us.so it's 2004 and there looking for upcoming native activists to betray again.it's fucked up.I think one day all that shyt will be turned around on them becuz if they came over to our land and took over it's a karma soon to be taken out.like one day america might get taken over and thats tha karma that tha white people get for fucking us that long time ago.hopefully i'll be dead by then..sincerely
a proud cheyenne river sioux.

What exactly are we discussing here. There is no situation. What Outkast did was WRONG. I dont care about how anybody reacts. Whats gonna happen is some proud strong Native American youngster is gonna go to school and get made fun of or beat up because this symbol of us as a joke never ends. WE are the minority. We own that spot. Every race outnumbers us and we get attacked just for not wanting to be a joke in Americas eyes. As for the hip hop nation. Tupac Shakur is the king of it and he would never have approved of this. Wrong is wrong. Dont ever forget that.

I am a young Native American women who was raised on the reservation and i know what it means to be an Indian. When i seen the performance i was taken by surprise, i had to look twice. I didn't find it offensive. But I found it sad that that's how Native American people are being potrayed. But you know that's who we are, we don't have any control over what people are going to think about us, so i think that we all just need to repersent who we are and what we are capable of, then WE could be on television dancing around real teepees.
