Esthero: Ten Percent Dis
Whoa (or should I say whoa, Nelly?), Esthero has returned with deadly venom for the biters.

Glad to hear she's back, but I hope this won't some kind of cross-canadian beef (the beef tastes kinda funny up there).

Who bit Esthero?! I think most people saw her as one of the johnny-come-latey female singers jumping on the trip hop/downtempo pop bandwagon backwhen she first hit the scene.
That being said, I did dig her sound on her first album, she was pretty good live and was featured on one of my favorite latter-day house 12"s (Ian Pooley's "Balmes (A Better Life)" plus this new track sounds real sweet, so I'll give her a pass for the (slightly bogus) sentiment expressed therewithin....

Actually I've heard it as a fairly common complaint about Nelly Furtado as well as Res, the female vocalist from the Spooks, and others.. the propietor of GirlsAreWeird would be able to elaborate, I'm sure.
When Esthero first came out I thought of her as Bjorkish, but I can see where people were coming from with the later comparisons.. Esthero definitely came to mind rightaway the first time I heard Res.. not to say she doesn't have her own thing.

I was about to comment about how Doc produced Esthero and Res, but I see the message board beat me to it. It's all about the fact that I saw you mention that Res didn't have enough success to be mad about....I had to wince but you're absolutely right....

Didn't Esthero and Nelly work on a track together? I don't know the specifics but I thought it was all one love up here.
While I do appreciate some of Res' music, I think her style reflected a certain amount of musical ambivalence. At times it's a little too laboured and still somehow miraculously 'lite.'
As for Esthero's track, even if it's directed to anyone in particular, her claims are a bit outlandish. I didn't peg her for an originator of any sort. That said, I do like the song at first listen.

According to the dude who runs Esthero's site (http://www.nearlycivilized.com), after recording "I Feel You," their friendship kinda dismantled I guess (it's on the LJ community about her over here: http://www.livejournal.com/community/swallowme/37608.html). Off the cuff, he did mention meeting up with Esthero one night and listening to her new album and he said it was gonna be hot, but as of that time, they didn't have a release date.
Personally, I thought it would've been cooler if it was about the girl from BEP... I don't know what beef they would have (or the beef E would have with Nelly Furtado, for that matter, but I don't really like Nelly Furtado so it's still just as good). I always thought Nelly Furtado sucked anyway, so I still don't understand where the biting thing is coming from. And though I would've thought Ming Xia just coincidentally sounded a lot like Esthero off their first album, on the Spooks's new album the likeness almost seems deliberate. I like Ming Xia's voice anyway, but the track should've been about her.
And about Res, the tracks I liked the most on her album were the ones that Doc produced. Is she even doing anything new that's music-related besides modeling for Ecko?

I just heard OG Bitch and I didn't like it as much as her other (older tracks). I mean, her voice is pure gold but the lyrics were pretty harsh. I don't know who those lyrics were aimed at but my guess would be Fergie also. She has no reason to beef with Nelly, and yes they did do a track together. And I really hope she doesn't have beef with Res because Res is fukkin incredible, her album was great, her voice is great and she's just a stunning person. If they do sound smiliar, its probabably due to the Doc production.

Its obvious that If Esthero has beef with Nelly or anyone in the industry, its for her own Personal reasons that we know nothing about.. so how can it be dumb for her to call-out whoever she has beef with??
Esthero is an originator.. i have yet to hear another Album even close to their Album.. includung Res's

I always loved Nelly, and thought she had an original sound, till I bought the Esthero CD this month, and shit...I couldn't believe how much Nelly sounded like Esthero. I am shocked. i just dug this up, through the miracles of googles, and thought i'm not so much about the gossip and shit-disturbing anymore, it's interesting to note - i was at a party this weekend with Track & Field (Jarvis Church), Nelly Furtado (along with her husband, Lil Jazz), and Esthero. Nelly and her man and Jarvis were laughing and being chatty cathys, but Esthero? Esthero made as if she didn't even know them and walked right past to get fawned on by some groupies across the room.
none of anybody's business, but there's some nasty happenings in this industry. Toronto is way too small for beef.
