Andre 3000 of the rap duo OutKast says that when it comes to voting, he's been negligent, but things will be different this November. "Stuff came up," the 28-year-old, whose real name is Andre Benjamin, told The Atlanta Journal Constitution (registupidstration required). "I was out of town, I couldn't see how my vote would matter. It just wasn't that important to me," he said.
But Benjamin, one of dozens of entertainers taking part in a voting promotion, said he has "realized just how important it is. I'm really excited about voting for the first time," the Atlanta native said for an article published Tuesday. Benjamin recently hosted an event for "Declare Yourself," a national nonprofit group that has raised $27 million to try to reverse the trend of a declining youth vote...
To be fair, Andre sounds perfectly sensible here, but that headline still cracks me up. More on Outkast's civic-mindedness here , and more importantly you can register to vote here.

I never register when I hit one of those "our content is so sacred you must tell us who you are to read it" walls.
But anyway...
I think it's news because it was revealed weeks ago that many rappers who HSAN signed up to promote voter registration were not actually registered themselves. Thank goodness we get some positive reporting to counteract the negative.

Hahaha I agree about the headline and Andre never struck me as the most political of rappers - "Rosa Parks" was about telling other MCs to get to the back of the bus! but this is good news period.

The way the mainstream media treats every nugget out of Andre's mouth as The Word From The Street is funny, but it shows how patronizing non-hip-hop heads still are in regards to rap. Like Chris Rock's routine on Colin Powell ("He speaks so well...") it comes off as condescending, as if all rappers automatically refrain from voting as soon as they become MCs.
Andre 3000, to me, is like a real-life Pootie Tang: he's trying to set a positive example while staying ghetto, and balancing it all off with some bizarre-ass wardrobe ideas.
