Since I have no time to blog right now, I will now resort to stealing other people's entries in their entirety. Today's victim: Michael Angelo Matos.

Stephin Merritt in old, out of it, and talking out his ass shockah. "OutKast is boring music for suburban teenagers"--yes, and the Magnetic Fields is boring music for their older siblings who fancy themselves intellectual because they read half a magazine piece by David Foster Wallace.

Other choice Merritt quote: "Beyonc� is not famous for her songs, she’s famous for that outfit." Dude. It's okay to be out of the loop. As long as you don't try to talk like you're in the loop. Then it gets embarrassing.

Sidenote: Does Sasha actually own this? If so he should probably not invite me to his house, cuz things might happen.

I agree. If you're labeled as an "outsider" musician, you have to position yourself outside of the fray. Therefore, you have to say things that put you in that outsider position. But would this guy say what he said about Outkast in reference to, say, Lil' John? Maybe, if he actually listened to rap-- he even admitted that he's heard very little from Outkast. To me, that means he's only heard the singles.

And his Beyonce quote is garbage-- call her what you will, but Beyonce CAN sing.

It's funny - For all his talk about image and posturing, what Merritt is doing here (consciously or not) is cultivating his image of, well, cultivation. He's a pop songwriter doing an interview in New York magazine and name-dropping Stephen Sondheim as "contemporary", for fuck's sake! You just don't get much more constructed than that.
