Help Me Escape Realaudio

Since I got my new computer i've spent about a week struggling to make the latest version of the realaudio encoder perform what should be the most basic, easiest functions, to no avail. At this point I'm ready to do what I should have done a long time ago, and stop supporting this evil empire at all.

So I need some help, can you guys recommend the best way to make files that are of similar size and quality to realaudio files, without subjecting myself and my visitors to the horror of realaudio products?

Jay.

Windows Media Player works fine if not better than real audio, and its a direct stream.

I find myself slowly drifting away from real audio as well.

Windows media player tips and tricks: Sometimes the files are even smaller whenyou convert.

Some people make the mistake of choosing multiple dialups (28.8, 56k etc) in fact all you need is select modem and you can save tons of space on your P.C. faster pcs will pick up on that measly dial up.

Note to all about whats in a HipHop heads backpack: Silly stuff like this, and yes cheesecake.

I don't know how they compare to RA files, you should try Ogg Vorbis. It is a high-quality, truly open audio (and soon video) standard, unhampered by patents and corporate ownership.

You can find their official versions of software or look at third party software that might be more user friendly than a command-line encoder.

Ogg Vorbis will be supported in future versions of Real Player. They have even gotten a grant from Real Networks to support development. But RealNetworks can't stop the development of tools and players by other groups because the Ogg development group is independent.

Ogg is worth checking out. I encode all of my music in it now.

It would be a damn shame if you switched formats to Windows Media, but then again, I don't know how many of your visitors other than myself use non-mac/windows platforms.

I suggest using MP3 and encoding with LAME. Surely 24-32kbps mono MP3s are good/small enough.

don't panic Jay. hear are three solutions to you problem. i have all of these applications but haven't used them in a while. try them all and decide which one is best for you:JETAUDIO, ALL-TO-REAL-CONVERTER, EASY-REAL-CONVERTER.
i understand how frustrating the latest major media players can be(windows media player, realone player, winamp). i uninstalled the latest version of real player because it wouldn't let me do certain functions the previous versions did. i reinstalled an older version(build: 6.0.10.505) and everything is ok. you might solve your problem if you do the same.

at Jay - if you want to tryout the full version of these applications send me an email and i'll hook you up.

you should put up a "radio blog" like what Funkdigital has. That would be cool.

Posted by: Hashim at July 13, 2004 01:59 PM

i was going to suggest Ogg Vorbis or mp3s with Lame encoding or audiograbber if you're on a pc http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/

here's some resources but i don't know how any of them work - i only know LAME and audiograbber
http://www.e-soft.co.uk/

and here are some other converters and rippers http://www.share2.com/mp3/

i use audiocorder http://www.blackcatsystems.com/software/audiocorder.html
to directly record into the comuter and you get AIFF or WAV files that can easily be converted

you might also want to pop up your own player http://www.javazoom.net/applets/jlguiapplet/jlguiapplet.html

and then there are other types of players similar to the radio blog that hashim mentions - flash based players - and even other ways you can create your own skinned mp3 player

Stay with the Open Standards. As mentioned by earlier respondents, Ogg Vorbis is rapidly being adopted by various mainstream media players. XMMS is a great player.

Posted by: AG at July 16, 2004 07:51 AM

I'd suggest ogg vorbis as well. The sound quality is good. The codec compresses well. The specification is open to all.

I agree with you the way you view the issue. I remember Jack London once said everything positive has a negative side; everything negative has positive side. It is also interesting to see different viewpoints & learn useful things in the discussion.
