Blogging Is Hard

According to page 13 of Blogville for Dummies, blogging works best if you do it everyday. I'm not sure if that's always true, but I know traffic is much higher when I maintain my daily regimen here, and plummets almost instantly when I fall off the pace.

So whenever I miss a day or two, I feel like I better break the silence with something extra special, to draw people back in.. that makes me get picky and say "just linking to this little article is not good enough, I'll come back later when I have a cooler idea." Then the blog stays silent for another day, I feel even more pressure to make up for the drought and get even pickier, and next thing you know I haven't posted in a week and I'm embarrassed to show my face around here.

Do any of you face similar issues? How do you break the cycle of shame? Is there some kind of pill I can take for this, Blogitol or something? Maybe I shouldn't have deleted all that comment spam.

I'm reading an interview with Rick James on allhiphop.com and he is talking major shit on Prince.
Here is a quote: "My musical intake is so much that it is hard for me to be new wave, because I come from so many different areas, every song that I have ever written came from my heart, I am not Prince, I dont write stupid s**t. I talk about the streets, love affairs, a fire desire."
He says plenty more to bash Prince. Did they have beef or something?

Posted by: BCTW at August 6, 2004 02:13 PM

Yeah they've always had issues. I think from Rick's point of view, Prince copied his sound and took his spot, so he's always had that resentment/jealousy going on.

And legend has it Prince met Vanity at a Rick James party where she came in as Rick's date, but went home with P.

I have a related story that I will save for a new post.

How odd that he is now dead, were those comments before or after? Superfreaky if not. Perhaps Prince did it?

traffic counting kills the spirit of the weblog. It makes you too conscious of what you're doing. I hate it.

And it's crazy that traffic drops so much. My traffic drops on even the oldest archives, and it mostly comes from Google. I wonder if Google ups the ranking of sites when they stay fresh.

Peep these articles about traffic and weblogs:

1. http://www.dashes.com/anil/2004/01/01/on_not_blogging#c2923

2. Hits counts are a head trip: http://www.theobvious.com/archive/1995/12/11.html

Love the idea for blogitol! There's a growing market for that, the idea could be marketed to pharmaceutical companies :>

And if i actually had more visitors to the blog that i co-run, i might actually have more feelings of guilt when i don't post.

Your loyal traffic won't stop, and can't stop, don't know if that somewhat alleviates your feelings of guilt...

Posted by: Anjali at August 6, 2004 08:51 PM

With regard to traffic and regularity of posting, I personally focus on sparking lots of comments. If I write something and no one responds -- no matter how profound and brilliant it is -- fuck it... all I care about is comments. And the funny thing is that more comments seems to = more traffic. I actually have low daily traffic on my main weblog page, regardless of how often I write. But my subpages get lots of consistent traffic. It is largely a function of comments and Google ranking.

What I want to know is how much traffic Sir O-Dub is getting.
