August 30, 2004Other Protest NotesThere were some ridiculous arrests: Mike of Satan's Laundromat, Joshua Kinberg of Bikes Against Bush and many others at Friday's Critical Mass bike ride.. plus Rosario Dawson on Sunday?? Rosario was filming a remake of the cult-classic "Medium Cool," which mixed actors in with the real life action of the 1968 convention protests. So maybe the arrest will make into the film? But overall I thought most cops on Sunday did quite a fine job. Early on in the day I saw the guys from protestwarrior.com try to instigate something by slipping inside the main march and baiting people with their sarcastic fake protest signs. Pretty soon they ran into some anarchist kids and a scuffle ensued, and the cops immediately did the right thing and simply booted the right-wingers out of the march, and set them up where they belonged, over on the side in a sad and tiny counterprotest. So five-o should get credit where it's due, as they did from the marchers around me who started a "give the cops a raise!" chant on 34th st. These guys have a nice collection of RNC blog feeds, while the booby prize for worst commentary so far goes to Jeff Jarvis' anti-protesting rant. Nuff respect to Jeff as a major player in blogville, but I often disagree with his political analysis, and he's rarely been further off than he was there. Everybody doesn't have the same talents, interests, and resources as you, Jeff.. expressing yourself individually via mass media is what works best for you, and more power to you for sticking with it. But that doesn't make it the most constructive choice for everybody else. Posted by jsmooth995 at August 30, 2004 07:23 PM | TrackBackComments
Now that's fair and balanced reporting!!! Posted by: Yojimbot! at August 31, 2004 09:55 AM Out of curiosity, precisely how many people do you think see the protest and even consider a change in their views, or are the least bit swayed by what they see? While I understand that not everyone has the resources or talent to start their own newspaper or blog or whatever, I have some serious doubts as to the efficacy of forcing your viewpoint onto a piece of cardboard legible from any distance and walking down a street with hundreds of thousands of other people who've done the same, in regard to persuading anyone to consider your viewpoint. The main function of protests in this day and age is catharsis, rather than persuasive speech. In that sense, Jarvis is dead on. Posted by: mns at August 31, 2004 11:25 AM Mass protests send the message to the rest of the world that US citizens are aware of the injustices being committed by our gov't. Therefore when we travel to places like Africa, Asia, Europe, Central and South America--basically anywhere but the US--they don't think we're all a bunch of cowboy hat wearing, Miller Lite drinkin' rednecks such as yourself mns. Not that you are but one could more easily lump you in with that group based on your cynical complacence. Whew! now that was cathartic...plus, peace rallies are fun. I like all the kooky signs...the best were the Raelians for Peace. Their signs were just crazy run on sentences! Posted by: yojimbot at August 31, 2004 12:50 PM Aw man, the Raelians were there? I wish I had caught them. MNS: It's a mistake to assume that a protest's only value lies in persuading people on the other side of the fence. I've always found a much greater benefit comes from the effect on our side of the fence, both here and abroad. As Yojimbot points out, those of us who are ashamed of our government's actions would never find a more effective way than this to let the world to know that all of us in America, and this time specifically in NY, do not support these people. And what you dismiss as catharsis could more accurately be called inspiration. There's nothing that compares to the way attending an event like this can replenish your spirit, by letting you know so powerfully that you are not alone in your beliefs, you are part of a community committed to the same principles, the same struggles. It does so much to renew your resolve, to keep fighting these battles in whatever other ways you can, in your everyday life. This is the part of the puzzle you and Jeff Jarvis are missing, how so much more of the activities he approves will be inspired by this act he looks down on. Posted by: Jay Smooth at August 31, 2004 02:44 PM While I understand what you're saying, I happen to think there are better uses for the time and effort than what seems to me to be self-congratulatory gloating. Specifically, not preaching to the choir, but maybe registering voters, or actively engaging people who haven't already made up their mind one way or another. Maybe I'm too cynical. It's a distinct possibility, though I would describe it more as pragmatism. And by no means am I of the opinion that people should shut up and comply; part of the reason I love hip hop (and thus your weblog) is because it offers a very powerful venue in which to get information to people who would otherwise potentially be unexposed to different viewpoints; wider viewpoints; wider world-views. Major labels have done serious damage to the culture, to be sure, but at the same time, I think they've strengthened the resolve of those immersed in it, and in a way pushed them to strive for more; to reach more people, and to be more aware of just what's going on in the world. It's not often I find myself agreeing with Jarvis, but in this particular instance, I do.
