September 01, 2004PHOTOS: Anti Fox News "Shut-Up-A-Thon"![]() Thanks to Julianne for hipping me to the Shut-Up-A-Thon held today outside the Fox News studios on 47th and 6th. Very entertaining event, brought 1000+ highly creative protestors, observed with a sort of bashful bemusement by a few dozen Fox staffers on the other side of the barricades. Rarely have so few been flipped the bird so much by so many.
It got kinda hectic though, a very heavy police presence was crowding everyone into a big pen, but the overflow still kept the whole block completely packed. At one point they started shoving Amy Goodman down the street as she tried to conduct an interview. ![]() There were also numerous cops standing on the side videotaping everyone, one of whom seemed none too happy that I was taking his picture. And down the block was another group of officers with these weird paint-gun thingies, does anyone know the purpose of these? I spoke with them briefly but they didn't seem too keen on discussing it. ![]() Comments
It looks like some form of NLW (Non Lethal Weapon), perhaps a variant of the rubber bullet gun. BTW: FPS ICE didn't look like a local NYPD and it turns out they aren't. http://www.ice.gov/graphics/fps/ Nice photos, you got a lot closer than I did Posted by: whatisee at September 1, 2004 01:54 AM Thanks, yeah I was wondering if the "f" was for federal. The cops with camcorders were apparently from TARU. I asked those guys about the pellets, they just said "it's paint" and didn't seem open to further discussion. Posted by: Jay Smooth at September 1, 2004 02:27 AM Here's how it works... When they see you vandalizing, they pop you with some paint. Then they know which "black clad anarchist" to arrest. The video probably serves a number of purposes: training, prosecution, and national suspect databases. If I'm not mistaken, it is very much legal to videotape random people in public under the auspices of the Patriot Act. Posted by: eric at September 1, 2004 05:10 AM great shot of the cop with the paint gun, btw. Posted by: eric at September 1, 2004 05:12 AM Some police departments use paintball pellets with pepper-spray-type material inside. Not sure if this is an NYPD tactic though. Posted by: Vidiot at September 1, 2004 08:36 AM Good pics. More on TARU. (I used your pics in the post, with a link -- let me know if that's not ok.) Posted by: ScaryNY at September 1, 2004 08:49 AM is that beck in the tv costume?!? Posted by: Yojimbot at September 1, 2004 12:58 PM nice job. Posted by: Ron Mwangaguhunga at September 1, 2004 02:32 PM TARU units operate like anyone else with a camera. If you are on on public property or can be seen from it you can be taped. This is within reason and changes slightly from state to state based on "expectation of privacy" rulings. As in where can you expect to be in private, yes in your bedroom with the curtains drawn and the door shut and no on 6th ave and 47th. And it isn't the Patriot Act that allows this, it's the constitution. Although I'm pretty sure they don't mention handicams. Posted by: Frank at September 1, 2004 02:45 PM NEWSFLASH: You have no right to privacy standing on a public street in midtown Manhattan nor do you have the right to control the capture of your own image in same circumstances. You have no control over the use of that image unless it is being used for various commercial purposes and even then not in all cases. This has nothing to do with the Patriot Act. Posted by: Robert Cox at September 1, 2004 04:20 PM I was referring to the fact that the Patriot Act allows the government to start and keep a file open on you regardless of whether you actually show any sign of being a threat to the government. The point is that if you show up at a protest looking "suspicious" (or not), they have the right (under the Patriot Act, yes) to gather information on you personally and to keep the file open and continue surveillance on you without getting the permission of a judge. Posted by: eric at September 1, 2004 04:29 PM More information on the paintball guns Daily News: Arm Feds with Flyin' Colors To Quote: "The paint marks an individual so they can be apprehended later," said Dennis O'Connor, chief of staff for the Federal Protective Service, a division of the Department of Homeland Security. But the dye is considerably more potent than the standard paintball. "It goes through clothing and marks the skin," he said. "It's not going to wash off for several days."
