October 16, 2004The True Red Sox Curse: Racism? As pointed out by pnuthouse, OC Weekly's Steve Lowery was dropping bombs on the Bosox this week: please, please, please, PLEASE, stop with talking about the Boston “curse.” You know the one about how the Red Sox have been cursed from winning a World Series because they traded Babe Ruth? Sure it’s a funny thing to put on a T-shirt, but it’s tired and, worse, glosses over the real reason the Red Sox haven’t won a World Series title since Woodrow Wilson was president: for much of the 20th Century, the Boston Red Sox were one of the most racist organizations in all of professional sports. They had an opportunity to sign Jackie Robinson but passed. They then had a chance to sign Willie Mays and passed, saying the game’s greatest all-around player wasn’t their type of player. In fact, the Red Sox were the last team to integrate their roster, grudgingly doing so in 1959, two years after Jackie Robinson retired. The end of it? Hardly. Between 1976, when free agency started in baseball, and 1992, the Red Sox signed no African-American free agents. Instead, for most of those years, they have cast their lot with big, slow white guys who could only score by hitting home runs. Curse? Karma.Posted by jsmooth995 at October 16, 2004 12:17 AM | TrackBack Comments
I don't know much about baseball, but this is a pretty interesting thesis. I have to fact check this with some of my baseball fans and see what they think. Posted by: Kai at October 17, 2004 01:06 AM The Yankees were as racist as the Red Sox, they has a great chance to have Willie Mays in the outfield along side with Mickey Mantle, but they passed on cause they did not want that nigger. This is well documented, read 'the summer of 49' Plus the fact that the Red Sox did not get black free agents between 76-92….I’m not too sure about that….Steve Lowery might be a Yankees fan. If he knew his baseball history, the American League as a whole were slow to have black players on their team Name black superstars on the Yankees in the 50s or 60s…… NONE Posted by: mc at October 17, 2004 10:43 AM mc: Elston Howard was the Yankees' catcher from 1955-67. He was also an AL and World Series MVP — the first black man to do either. Try again. Posted by: Joe Grossberg at October 17, 2004 03:34 PM The racism inherent within the Boston Red Sox organization during owner Tom Yawkeys tenure is a well known secret. Boston sportswriters aren't interested in taking an honest look at the history of the Boston Red Sox organization. The ridiculous Curse Of The Bambino is easier to digest and write about. It's a shame sports writer Dan Shaugnessy, who dreanmed up the whole "Bambino gets even" scheme back in 1987, didn't put his writing to good use. But then, who wants to read about a storied franchise systematicaly denying minority players the righ tto step on the green of America's oldest balfield, `Historic' Fenway Park? It isn't pretty, it isn't relevent to the myth making of the Curse Of The Bambino. As a life long Red Sox fan from a mixed heritage family, rooting for them is something I actually struggle with. Tom Yawkey was one of the most biggoted, hateful men in sports, but he was not alone in his beliefs, he was representitive of Amrican society as whole-he was a product of his times, as much as it is a cliche, it is the truth. Posted by: elka at October 20, 2004 02:08 PM Oh please. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. This isnt about a curse, racism, or karma. What Wednesday was about should show you enough. That night was about a team coming together and overcoming the odds. It was about disproving STATISTICS. Superstition and and the such can fill the heads of the fanbase, but what that ballclub had in mind was winning. You can say what you want and "discuss" until the sun goes down, but the truth remains: drama attracts watchers. What better for BASEBALL itself than a rivalry that refuses to die. Do you think Martinez or Damon even gives a flip about a curse or what color their teammates are? NO. They care about winning the game. The racism card has been play to much and too often. You complain about injustice gone past. I'm a black man that lives in today's world. One where, if anything, things are EASIER because of the fact that I'm african american. Stop feeling sorry for yourselves because of what happen a century ago and what occured to your grandfather. It didn't happen to you and it never will. Propaganda and intrigue may have occured with in the Red Sox organization. But what the hell does that have to to with the fans, the real reason the sport exist? Your posts include facts, yes, but this is about the truth, and no matter what you say, the truth is that the red sox are going to the world series for the first time in 18 years, and may bring home a title for the first time since 1918. The truth conserning THAT my friends, is that, if they win, you will have thousands of red sox fans crying their eyes out because of something they believed in. Posted by: Bear at October 22, 2004 12:33 PM let it go. it doesn't surprise me one bit to see a relationship between the red sox "curse" and racism. first off in dealing with jackie robinson... the only reason he is famous is because he was the first of his kind as an american who is black (i refuse to use the term 'african-american' since there is no country named Africa-America). other than his .311 lifetime career batting average, he put up pathetic numbers. if he wasn't the first black man to play in the major leagues, then he would not even be considered for the hall of fame. he did not steal many bases at all, hit a measly 1518 hits in 10 years and averaged 11 errors a year. Jim Rice, on the other hand, put up much better numbers in his 16 years with the red sox. he was also boston's first round draft pick too. guess what color his skin is??? oh yeah, it's black. you can say that the red sox had not signed a black free agent for whatever span you listed. i haven't looked that up and it does not matter to me. they risked a first round draft pick and it paid off for them. Willie Mays was a great player and maybe at the time the "racist" boston red sox chose not to sign him because he was black, but many other teams chose not to sign black baseball players. they chose not to and they won world series championships. how come they were not "cursed" by their racist ways? yeah very typical of a rap website to pull the race card to explain a situation. try educating yourself on all of the issues before you start to cry racism. for christ's sake, this is a baseball team who could not win a championship since 1918. what in the hell does that have to do with racism? the race card is much like greek mythology. Uneducated greeks used those stories to explain things that they could not comprehend otherwise. think about it. Posted by: Jake Walker at October 22, 2004 05:02 PM WOW. Now i've seen many crazy cries of "RACISM" in my day.....but this is ridiculous. I think sometimes you "hip hoppers" just like to come up with something to stir the pot. Is there racism in the world today? Of course! But the Red Sox being cursed by El Negro? I thought it was the Bambino!! Please, you guys are seriously reaching here. If you knew anything about the history of blacks in this country, you'd know that EVERY BALL CLUB was adversed to signing blacks at some point, not just the RED SOX!!!! It was a sad time, because many of the players in the Negro League were better than most of the MLB players....(Satchel Paige etc.) Simply put, the Red Sox are going to try and do something that the majority of the living populace has never seen....win a world series, and I hope they do it. So shut up and try and solve real issues plaguing your community. I'm all for equality, but when you cry "wolf" too many times nobody is going to believe you! Posted by: Peeps at October 23, 2004 02:04 PM The BoSoX are under new ownership and new management. So thier predecessors actions have nothing to due with this teams Karma.Boston is routinely used a scape goat of america as being the epitomy of o racist city, and that my friends is simply to make ourselves feel better about our own situation wherever we may be at. Posted by: walt baby at October 23, 2004 11:49 PM Gee. for people who want to "let it go" you sure do write a lot. you can not stop millions and millions of people holding fairly rational views. what is easier to explain...the Curse of the Bambino? or the fact if you don't hire the most qualified people for a team, you won't win. Its really not all that hard friends. Racism exists and corrodes life every day but yet people of color still find ways to go about life. Its called....not lying profusely to yourself. Try it. Posted by: jck at October 24, 2004 01:14 AM did you miss the part where he said that EVERY MLB TEAM WAS RELUCTANT TO SIGN MINORITY PLAYERS? Those other teams still managed to win the World Series (except the cubs... but theyre cursed too. cuz they didnt sign jackie robinson either, right?) what happened last week was amazing and it was about nothing but baseball, pure and simple. it was about the team with the most heart overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds. it was about good triumphing over evil. it was about the common man beating the machine. the yankees represent everything that is wrong with america. they are the rich fat cats manifest. boston achieved something you should be striving to achieve yourselves. they took control of their own destiny, and they emerged the victors. if racism is such a problem for you, then stop whining about a baseball team and go do something about it. Posted by: *sigh* at October 24, 2004 03:05 AM it is interesting to me that many seem to want to disregard the notion that racism could have been a factor. People want racism to be over so bad they declare it gone prematurely. Kinda like George Bush and the war in iraq that 'ended' already. Posted by: Kai at October 25, 2004 08:56 PM Congratulations to the Red Sox fans on your World Series victory, but I have to say I'm bothered by the media's portrayal of the Red Sox and Red Sox nation as poor, beleaguered fans as well as some of the Sox fans on this site for making statements like the Red Sox are "about a team coming together and overcoming the odds." They have the second highest payroll in baseball they should win the World Series or be pretty damn close! While I agree that a lot of sports teams were racially intolerant, the Red Sox history of discrimination goes beyond many other teams. So much so that current Red Sox ownership have taken huge steps to try and right the wrongs of former owner Tom Yawkey. While Jake Walker, Peeps and others might attack the people on this website for calling the Red Sox curse racism, you have to realize that it has more to do with racial intolerance then some notion of curse created by the selling of Babe Ruth to the Yankees. It’s all conjecture, but had the Red Sox not been the last team to integrate or been a team that was more welcoming to non-white players they might have won a World Series. Had minorities felt they would have been welcomed on the Red Sox maybe the Red Sox could have had a player of Keith Hernandez’ caliber stopping that grounder instead of it going through Bill Buckner’s legs and keeping “Babe Ruth’s gypsy curse” alive. Minorities didn’t feel welcome in the Red Sox organization. A former Red Sox player, Tommy Harper, was fired in 1985 for speaking out against a team policy that allowed only white employees to go to an Elks Lodge near the team's spring training camp in Winter Haven, Florida. He sued for wrongful termination and won. It’s a history of that kind of behavior from Red Sox ownership that probably kept a lot of minority players from wanting to play for Boston. Had more minority free agents joined the Red Sox over the years would they have won a World Series? Who knows? Maybe…maybe not. The Yankees got Alex Rodriguez and they didn’t win the World Series this year. While there is no curse of Ruth or racism, there is one truth: the Red Sox years of allowing their owner’s racial intolerance to influence how they run the team never won them a Championship. To me what I find most bothersome about this World Series was the fact that the media played up this idea of “the curse of Babe Ruth” and inadvertently swept the truth further under the rug. The last 86 years of Red Sox history have been rewritten as “cute and endearing” because of the continued perpetuation of the curse nonsense. Even people who don’t watch baseball were pulling for the Red Sox, the little team (with baseball’s second highest payroll) that could, but were continually been held back by the evil Yankees and the mystical curse of the Bambino. If only that plucky, underprivileged team and their blue collar fans (steel mill and mineworkers and like Ben Affleck and Steven King) could just shake the ghost of that awful Babe Ruth…sigh. Poor BoSox. Would people have been so happily jumping the Boston bandwagon had they been told about Tommy Harper and all of the years of discrimination? If the Red Sox should be praised for anything it’s the fact that ownership has made attempts to own up to their past and change the identity of the team as a team that is for all baseball fans not just white ones. And as for Peeps statement “I think sometimes you ‘hip hoppers’ just like to come up with something to stir the pot.” Is “hip hoppers” your thinly veiled attempt to say black people? If so, grow a sac and say black people you dumb ass. It’s as easy to write the words “black people” as it is for me to write “you’re a dumbass.” Peeps, you’re a dumbass. And I call you dumbass because hip-hop is a genre and style it’s not a specific person. Not all black people are hip-hop and hip-hop’s not just black people and not all hip-hop is about stirring the pot. But if no one “stirred the pot” a wacky group of disgruntled Brits would have never come to America to start their own country free of the religious persecution they endured in England. Or if no one “stirred the pot” we never would have taken action as a country to fight in World Wars I and II and stop the needless persecution and slaughter of Jewish people. I guess we could have asked Hitler just to “keep it down a little. America’s trying to sleep.” If Rosa Parks didn’t “stir the pot” and refuse to sit in the back of a bus we wouldn’t have one of the defining moments of the Civil Rights Movement. If no one “stirred the pot” we couldn’t have open discourses like this one. Peeps, if no one “stirs the pot,” you may never realize just how far your head is shoved up your ass. Because if you were really for “equality” as you say, you would realize that YOU also have a responsibility to try and solve the “real issues plaguing ‘our’ community” because White, Black, Asian American, etc as long as you live in this country, it’s your community too. Every community in this country is your community, just like every community is mine. There’s no such thing as a Black American problem or a White American problem it’s just an American problem. If an area in this country is impoverished and undereducated then it affects everyone because guess what Peeps even if you say it’s not your problem, the taxes you pay to ignore it make it your problem. And unless you take positive action, the taxes you pay to ignore the problem are just going to get bigger. You don’t have to raise someone’s kid, but you can make sure that kid has all of the necessary resources to get as quality of an education (from preschool through 12th grade) as a kid who goes to the best schools. And to the Red Sox fans. Now that Boston has won a World Series is the mystique gone? Are the Red Sox now just another baseball team like the Marlins or the Dodgers? And will the Cubs ever win a World Series because they really are cursed…by a goat. It’s impossible to be cursed by a man, but a goat curse is very real. Posted by: Reggie at October 28, 2004 06:32 AM Poor BoSox Nation...PLease. The immorality of racism aside, a decision to exclude qualified (and in some case superstar) black players is, in essence, a decision to put yourself at a competitive disadvantage. Coupled with the fact that the BoSox for many years built their team around players around an idiosynchratic ballpark (i.e., big ball, not small ball), rather than building a team designed to win (as they have done so this year), why is it suprising that the Sox have not won a world series? It is tough enough to win a World Series without putting yourselves at a competitive disadvantage. Bottom line, the desire to WIN had as much a role as progressive moral values regarding the integration of black players into baseball.
