Racist Hot 97 Skit Mocking Tsunami Victims

1/31/05 UPDATE:
Todd Lynn Fired

The truth about the "informed insider" email

1/28/05 UPDATE: Todd Lynn Speaks to Hiphopmusic.com

1/26/05 UPDATE: Hot 97 Announces Suspension, Details Unclear So Far

Edit: Check the new updates/new audio here (more updates posted 1/25/05)
and click here for Jin's new freestyle dissing Hot 97.

-------------------

For the last week Hot 97 has been running a hideously unfunny and offensive skit named "Tsunami Song," that ridicules the victims of the Tsunami as "ch

*nks" whose children will now be sold into child slavery. It's being played on the station's morning show, hosted by Miss Jones.

It's also featured on their website, on the right side of the page. (This is a direct link to the mp3).

EDIT: the mp3 link is not working from their site anymore, but they're not gonna cover this up that easily. The fine citizens at okayplayer.com saved a copy here for evidence. Also check their discussion of the song here and here

Here are some choice lyrics:

..All at once you could hear the screaming ch*nks and no one was safe from the wave there were africans drowning, little chinamen swept away you could hear god laughing, "swim you b*tches swim"

So now you're screwed, it's the Tsunami
you better run or kiss your ass away, go find your mommy
I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head
and now the children will be sold to child slavery...

Uhh, yeah. Har de har har.

You may know that one of that show's other hosts, Miss Info, is Asian. She voiced her displeasure with the skit and got into a heated on-air argument with Miss Jones about it. But so far Hot 97 hasn't acknowledged that there's anything wrong with it, and they continue to air it everyday.

As a New Yorker, as a radio person, and as a hip-hop fan I am ashamed and disgusted that Hot 97 is allowing this to broadcast on their airwaves. If you feel the same way you can let them know here:

NOTE: If you use the word "tsunami" in your email it will probably get filtered now, and not read. So try to leave that word out..

as i said in the OKP thread, this is distasteful. it is a disgrace. they've made bad decisions in the past and done some controversial stuff on those morning shows, but how in the world can they go and run a bit like that? it's just really sad.

Posted by: lamin at January 21, 2005 04:41 AM

From what i've heard, this seems par for the course with NYC radio. Aren't there other radio personalities who push such envelopes? In Los Angeles, there is very little tolerance for racism on the radio. KFI fired one of their hosts for something much less offensive about two years ago.

One would THINK that a city like New York City would know better than that. You would THINK that they'd be more intelligent than to have racist crap fly like that. I'm most dissapointed in New Yorkers!

Posted by: RG at January 21, 2005 09:20 AM

Wow. I used to miss listening to them when I first moved upstate. Then I thought about the whole Aaliyah bit they ran and how they kept Star and Buckwild for a while after that.
They fire those two, now Star and Buckwild get heat for the phone prank they ran, and Hot 97, not to be outdone, runs this? I thought the Slapfest was pushing it.
It's like my old boss used to say, It's another black eye for the team!

Happy MLK day, indeed. After borrowing from the east to win freedom in the west, I'm sure Dr. King would be thrilled to see what one community is doing to the other, in the name of...comedy.

what one community is doing to the other, in the name of...comedy.

huh? what is "one community doing to the other"? how did a couple of people at hot 97 turn into "one community"?

Posted by: huh? at January 21, 2005 10:01 AM

I'm just playing devil's advocate here.

Has anybody actually *heard,* with their own ears, this song being played on Hot 97?

I have yet to find one person who actually heard it.

I'm not doubting that it was on their website for a time. But if it had been played over the air, all week, as you mentioned, it would be all over the news. And I can't find anything about it other than here and the links you provide.

Posted by: Jason at January 21, 2005 10:22 AM

…so, wait.

Uh, we're not supposed to call you niggers, and we're not supposed to say anything bad about 9-11.

But apparently it's okay to mock the deaths of a 160,000 ch*nks. Or, I don't know, 160,000 ch*nkee g**ks.

Oh-kay. Nice double standard there.

Posted by: T-Boy at January 21, 2005 10:24 AM

that's disgusting. i'm gonna email them right now. big nyc radio has always bordered on/been racist/offensive...see howie stern, don imus, etc.

Posted by: Jesse at January 21, 2005 10:26 AM

Strangely, I haven't heard anything as offensive as this after decades of listening to Stern, Imus, Greaseman et. al.

If someone wants to play this for friends or people who choose to hear it, that's fine. But rignt out over the airwaves to the general public is incredibly irresponsible, reprehensible and tasteless.

Who in their right mind thinks 160,000+ people dying is funny?

Posted by: Kevbo at January 21, 2005 10:34 AM

Great post. People can also contact the FCC to file a complaint. The station gets its license to use the public airwaves for free with the understanding that they'll serve the "public interest" (or so says eyeteeth: http://eyeteeth.blogspot.com/2005/01/racist-radio-how-low-can-new-york-hip.html). Let's hold them accountable.

peace everybody, just wanted to share what i wrote to the fine people at hot97:
Dear Miss Jones, Hot 97, and All those responsible for the production and airing of Hot 97's "Tsunami Song,"

I am utterly appalled and disgusted by the blatant racist, inhumane, and callous sentiments displayed in your "comedy" piece, "Tsunami Song." As a one-time listener to your radio station and a person of color, i.e. Asian, I find it absolutely disgraceful, disheartening, and beyond offensive. I understand your intent may have been some form of irreverance and low-brow humor, which certainly has its place in the media and the world, but your project fails in all accounts, save for being a display of your own vacant, corrupt, and bankrupt humanity.

As media people you have a responsibility to the public to raise awareness, disseminate information, and yes, at times to provoke. But this is a social responsibility -- i.e. an ethical and moral responsibility, which you have flaunted away precariously and discarded disdainfully with this piece. It's an utter disappointment, and I wonder what exactly you all intended with it? Could you please share with the public?

In any case, I demand that this be taken off the air and an apology made. I hope you have at least this bit of moral sobriety within you.

Thank you for your time,
etc etc

If you REALLY wanted to hit them where it hurts, you could call a tipline for a news station......

Posted by: Cerebro at January 21, 2005 12:06 PM

I started listening to Hot 97 because Ed Lover at Power 105 is such a homophobe. These racists have sent me scurrying to 1010 WINS.

Posted by: Janine at January 21, 2005 12:14 PM

What they did was pretty fucked up but considering what they have done before I'm not shocked.Hope they get hit hard.

"Happy MLK day, indeed. After borrowing from the east to win freedom in the west, I'm sure Dr. King would be thrilled to see what one community is doing to the other, in the name of...comedy."

Yeah, the black community is so racist towards asians, while the asian community is so loving of blacks. And we all know only the black community have double standards.........bullshit.

Posted by: Ismail at January 21, 2005 03:33 PM

Although this song may offend some or most people, I am amazed that people were not equally disgusted and angry when Thailand and other Muslim dominated countries CELEBRATED when the Twin Towers came crumbling down. These scumbags went around dancing in the streets, singing, and celebrating the death of Americans. Then they went on to BEHEAD our soldiers and drag their broken naked bodies through the streets and hang their naked bodies on a public bridge for all to see.
THESE PEOPLE REALLY NEED OUR COMPASSION!
YEAH, RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!

thats just sickening....awful....

Posted by: Holls at January 21, 2005 04:33 PM

Posted by: anonymous2 at January 21, 2005 04:36 PM

THESE PEOPLE REALLY NEED OUR COMPASSION!
YEAH, RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, because the death of 3,000 Americans is comparable to a natural disaster that killed over 160,000 people.

And if America wasn't so insistant on pushing its politics where they don't belong, they wouldn't get into situations like that.

I listen to SCHNITT down here in SAN ANTONIO. I'm an ad exec for a t.v. station, and i spent 28 years on the radio. I have produced parodies, and I'm also a singer so I know about sound and production. The why this song shouldn't exist is obvious, but as far as production value...well, my dog could produce a better song. If this is supposed to be NEW YORK, why does the song sound so amateurish? the vocals are horribly done (imitation is supposed to be close to the original, and these fools don't even get in the neighborhood) and the whole thing is just crap. Just cuz it's NEW YORK, that means it should be better, but it's horrible. i'm embarrassed for their juvenile antics, and also for their weak talents.

To the idiot who said "Thailand and other Muslim dominated countries...", get educated...Thailand is not "Muslim dominated", it's a Buddhist nation that did not celebrate when 9-11 happened. Like the other person said, they, nor did India or Sri Lanka ever behead an American in Iraq. No wonder people think Americans are ignorant. They only meet outspoken fools like yourself.

I wonder how well a skit on the 911 terrorist attacks would be received in New York. Do the Morons at "NOT SO HOT 97" know how much damage this could do to America’s relief effort and image.
Do these walking talking Non Complis Mentis Tone Deaf Toad Sucking Cerebrally Constipated Sub Primate Anal Orifices realize they have put in danger the Americans who are there trying to give aid and have shat upon the memories of the Americans who died there? Have these socially corrupted Muck Spouts no concept of decency? Do they actually think this kind of Bovine Excremental Tripe is FUNNY? I will urge all my friends and co workers to write letters to any company or organization advertising on this radio station promising to boycott any product or service advertised on this radio station. I am further going to ask all to file a complaint with the FCC as well. I will ask they write and call every Radio Station, News Paper, Television Station, News Network, and Elected Official in The state of New York to voice their outrage over this abomination.
Mother Nature, God, Karma, Fate, Ala, Jehovah, or plain old Blind Justice will visit upon the creators, actors, producers, facilitators, administrators, managers, and accomplices to the airing of this piece of audio Poultry Fertilizer all that is justly coming to them.

Americans aught to take some of there own advice...and SHUT THE FUCK UP!...every now and again.
That song is fucked up but so is the majority of the shit HOT 97 peddles as Hip Hop music...as for Muslims dancing in the streets cutting american soldiers heads of in celebration of the twin towers??? That whole debacle was created in a studio by the Worlds capitalist media to offer the public some kind of explanation as to what happened on 9/11 all that footage was spliced together to create the idea that the Musim world (al quada don't exist ) was against us? pure bullshit 100% This was just the beginning of the US media created climate of fear...Go watch World Police and laugh about it...but also think about the rest of the world and just how we view America and those who live there.

Posted by: MajorNumnuts at January 21, 2005 10:15 PM

Did the same radio station have the nerve to make fun of the victims of 9/11? I bet they didn't. News like this spreading across the globe just make americans look even more like dumb ignorant and egotistical dipshits who dont give a shit about the world they live in (it's not the first sign of this it just adds to it). This is what makes many other nations hate many of you.

"la dee da da...these niggers get fucked by the whites..and pick their cottons and wipe their shoes and be called fucking niggers..as the women gets raped and the men can pick cotton la dee da da" how's that for a song u dumb fucks?

Posted by: WORDSPLAY at January 22, 2005 12:22 AM

black people as a whole should not be judged by the stupidity of Hot 97. i am black and i was OUTRAGED by that song. it was the most tasteless, insensitive piece of crap i've ever heard. i'm amazed that they've allowed the song to air day after day after dary.

in fact, i was SO outraged that i wrote to Hot 97 yesterday morning...

"First of all, that Tsunami song is disgraceful. It's bad enough that the topic is totally inappropriate, but to make matters worst the lyrics are just PLAIN STUPID and NOT FUNNY. Hundreds of thousands of people died in the most horrific way imaginable, and you guys turn it into a tasteless joke. How would Miss Jones like it if someone made a parody about her mom dying of cancer. Would that be funny? You guys are failing MISERABLY in your desperate attempt to be "shock jocks." Maybe Miss Jones should just go back to her day job - singing. Uhhhhh... NOT!

And if that Tsunami song wasn't proof enough of how tacky and ghetto Miss Jones is, that vicious outburst against Ms. Info this morning sold the deal. I applaud Ms. Info for not taking part in the stupidity AND stating so publicly. She has the right to let people know she didn't participate. Who the hell is Miss Jones to try and silence her? Talk about being a DIVA with an over-inflated sense of self-importance. What did she have like ONE ghetto hit? She acting like she's Janet Jackson or somebody. Puh- LEEZE! I can't even remember the name of ANY of her songs! For her to scream Ms. Info out like that - ON THE AIR - and suggest that she quit her job because she disagreed with the song was not only inappropriate, but unprofessional. Do that shit behind the scenes. And what is up with throwing her nationality in the mix and accusing her of thinking that she's "better?" Miss Jones has one hell of a chip on her shoulder. Why get so defensive if she stands behind the song? I'm black and I wouldn't have participated in that nonsense. Does that make me better? Hell YEAH it does! It's not about race, it's about tact and common sense and decency. All of which Miss Jones' tired ass lacks...

If anybody needs to GO - it should be Miss Jones. She makes me almost ashamed to be black. All black people are not this ignorant, Ms. Info!!!"

my friend is a contributor to these sites. placing an article in either one of these might be a nice way to get additional support for a campaign against miss jones and that incredibly stupid-ass song.

http://www.yellowworld.org/
http://www.modelminority.com

both of these sites have posted articles that helped mobilize support against abercrombie and fitch (remember the t-shirts?) a while back and well as that asinine kung fool costume that was being sold at walmart and target two years ago.

peace, everyone!

Posted by: leannelovesriseup at January 22, 2005 04:22 AM

Please remember that what made that song and its broadcast possible lives inside of a lot of us to varying degrees. The way to change this is not to hate on each other some more. Complaining has its place and justice should be served but stopping the broadcasts won't change the way people feel or the way the world is. Only when we get out and put positivity and real love into our daily interactions is anything going to change.
Do we want to be a part of the problem or the solution?

Posted by: Parisa at January 22, 2005 06:29 AM

Interestingly, they pulled the link off the downloads site last night. But as of now (8:12am EST) - there's a new link replacing it to: http://www.hot97.com/airstaff/mornignshowTsunami.aspx

They were in such a rush to get it up that there's a typo in the url, heh. try: http://www.hot97.com/airstaff/morningshowTsunami.aspx where apparently:

As an additional sign of HOT 97’s commitment to the cause, Miss Jones in the Morning, along with her entire staff, have agreed to contribute one week’s pay to Tsunami Relief efforts.

Howzat! :)

Posted by: prema at January 22, 2005 08:20 AM

That song was way over the top. It was callous, and inhumane. Racsist?? I think we're going to far with that one.

To all my *innocent* asian brethren/sisters talking about double standards, why don't you google the group, Bubble Sisters or tokyo breakfast. It's not like black store owners are shooting asians in the back for walking in the store or anything like that.

Posted by: blame_Blacks? at January 22, 2005 09:21 AM

I found the sound kind of funny. There are a lot of people here who need to get a grip. It was a parody song. Remember the first amendment, that thing about freedom of expression. Does it ring a bell? Just because some people find it disgusting doesn't give you blowhards the right to ban it or ruin the person who created it.

Posted by: Snook at January 22, 2005 09:26 AM

Anyone who believes that it wasn't racist needs to gain some perspective.

Insert your ethnic background into the song in place of the Asian ones used. Is if offensive now?

I bet it is.

Grow up.

nice to find you on a hiphopmusic board, honkee, thought your kind don't listen to this music.

anyway, back to the point, has anyone from new york actually heard it? this is too hard to believe to let someone air music like this.

Posted by: dae1 at January 22, 2005 11:14 AM

I agree with you, dae1. I can't even believe that they would let them air this. I'm not saying it's not true or anything, but it just seems like they would get fired instantly.
Like (almost) everyone else said, this is absolutely disgusting that someone could make a joke out of such a tragedy. With all races put aside, NO ONE should joke about anything like this, whatever their race may be. They have obviously never lived through something like this, and if they ever do, I doubt they'd like someone making up little disgusting songs about it.

Posted by: Amani(chicago) at January 22, 2005 12:28 PM

yes, this is vile humor, completely tasteless.

still, it's not illegal and I don't think Hot 97 should be forced to stop playing it. Y'know, Freedom of speech, freedom of the press, all that 1st amendment stuff. Register your distaste by boycotting the station, not asking the FCC to take action. I don't want the government to have any more power over what the media can or can't do. We're close enough to a police state already.

Posted by: scose at January 22, 2005 02:59 PM

Where is the FCC complaint que on this?!!! Report this already! This kind of thing should be eradicated. I hope those that performed the song are never able to hold their heads up in public again, or at least not for a long while, and not until they have done LOTS of community work to prove they are willing to work for the good of the community. *growl*

Posted by: KatK at January 22, 2005 03:03 PM

Regarding scose's comment. It's fomenting racial hatred IMO. It shouldn't be allowed. If they are going to get on Janet Jackson's case for a breast flash, then they'd BETTER put a stop to this. This kind of thing is more damaging to society than veiwing a bare, pierced breast ever will be.

Check out the apology on Hot 97's site. Wrote this to the program director:
"I saw the apology on your website and that people have to give up a week's pay...It almost adds insult onto the injury -- if giving a little money to the injured parties could fix any of the racism in the United States we would have been over it a long time ago.
MY SUGGESTION:
Your staff should be required to attend diversity training -- the same way cops (also, supposedly, in a position of respect and authority) have to when they commit racist acts.
And make them talk about it on the air. Not during, but after. After it's sunk in. After they've thought about it. This could be a tremendous gift for them all.
Thank you for your time.

Posted by: parisa at January 22, 2005 03:51 PM

I believe tony chanka has abley demonstrated that bigotry is a worldwide problem. Hey tony, why not face up to your own bigotry and hatred before pointing the accusatory finger at others? You don't really have room to speak.

Posted by: KatK at January 22, 2005 04:01 PM

Posted by: homie123 at January 22, 2005 05:33 PM

It's wrong to say that this is not illegal. Whether or not the FCC takes action on this or not, they clearly are breaking laws outlined by the FCC here:

which states:

"It is a violation of federal law to broadcast obscene, profane or indecent programming. The prohibition is set forth at Title 18 United States Code, Section 1464 (18 U.S.C. § 1464). Congress has given the Federal Communications Commission the responsibility for administratively enforcing 18 U.S.C. § 1464. In doing so, the Commission may issue a warning, impose a monetary forfeiture or revoke a station license for the broadcast of obscene, profane or indecent material."

The FCC has defined profanity as "including language that denot[es] certain of those personally reviling epithets naturally tending to provoke violent resentment or denoting language so grossly offensive to members of the public who actually hear it as to amount to a nuisance."

This falls well within the parameters of what is considered illegal by the FCC.

You just gave caring americans a bad name. I happen to live generally around the New York area, and I'm sensitive about 9/11. Thousands dying for no reason at all isn't funny.

So many of those people had NOTHING. They worked all their lives just to feed their families and now that's gone. Are you pissed because people are encouraging you to send money??? What is it that you have against these people? Maybe a nice car, a meal 3 times a day, A HOME?!

Cut this shit out. Leave the donating to people like me. No one's asking anything from you.

Posted by: James (Heychuall) at January 22, 2005 09:23 PM

yo, i hate to say this, but I'm fairly certain that most of the language we find offensive in this broadcast was not at all against FCC regulations.

First off, I have to mention that I am a person of color (black), and I do agree these things *should* be regulated. I also agree that this was some serious bullshit, and somebody needs to not only get fired, but have their ass beat by both the asian-american and the african-american community in a dark alley for pulling this bullshit. But if you're trying to get them in trouble for breaking some rules--I hate to break it to you, but for the most part, they didn't.

As far as profanity, which was mentioned above, neither "chinamen" nor "chinks" applies here. Actually, I'm fairly certain that even "nigger" wouldn't cause much trouble either, though most people are fortunately bright enough to stay away from that one.

Profanity, believe it or not, actually applies to language that profanes the name of the Christian god. Nice separation of church and state, right? Well, that's what we're up against.

The only word that I see here that could cause some trouble is the word "ass". That's because what the FCC is most concerned with is indecency, i.e., language that refers to, explicitly or implicitly, sexual or excretory functions or orifices.

If you don't believe me, that's fine. I work in radio, and I've spoken to the top lawyers in the FCC "crackdown" that has happened after the whole Superbowl bullshit.

So if we're going to do anything here, it's going to involve changing some of the rules at the FCC, because the existing structure isn't going to help us out now at all.

Feel free to email me or respond with any questions.

I made the mistake of downloading the song and hearing it

Does it exist?...Yes
Does it make me want to throw up?...Yes

I remember tuning in to Hot 97 a few years ago during 9/11. The radio djs were all.."Omg..I can't believe this happened. I feel horrify even thinking of this." This just proves that they're faking it. 3000 people died in WTC. That's a lot at the time. My dad works around the area of WTC and he barely made it out alive. Now Miss Jones finds it funny to air that bullshit on air.

I wonder what would happen to Miss Jones if say..something happened to her daughter (i dont follow Hot 97 but I recall reading that she has a daughter) If her daughter was one of the victims, and I made a song about her being a fucking useless african american Nigger dying, I wonder how would she feel if I just donated a week's pay of salary w/o an apology.

BTW, can anyone post up the argument between Miss. Info and Miss Jones? At least someone in that radio station stood up against that bullshit

Posted by: Abel at January 22, 2005 09:49 PM

Who, in the Tri-State area, would be willing to protest in front of Hot 97's studios? Just wondering so that we can do something in-their-face and proactive (after the snow storm, of course...blah)

Posted by: Loretta at January 22, 2005 10:09 PM

okay, this is the most fucking disgusting thing i have ever read in my life. i haven't downloaded the song and don't plan to. i can't begin to imagine how i would react to hear a bunch of middle-class nobodies ridiculing a tragedy. seriously, this makes me lose my faith in humanity.

Posted by: mo at January 22, 2005 11:03 PM

The tsunami that recently hit South Asia has killed over 220,000 people with more fatalities expected from the diseases being spread from this disaster, making this tragedy the most catastrophic event in the history of mankind. The world’s generosity has been projected in the outpouring of help being offered ranging from communities voluntarily set up by young adults and their parents all the way to well established charity organizations such as the Red Cross.

However, a hip-hop radio station, Hot97 located in New York City, has shockingly made a mockery out of the Asian tsunami victims!!!!!! The following were lyrics played on Hot97’s Morning Show, ironically on Martin Luther King Day (and for the rest of the week), a day that commemorates the nation’s achievement and advancements in racial equality issues:

“There was a time, when the sun was shing bright
So I went down to the beach to catch me a tan
Then the next thing I knew
A wave 20 feet high came and wash your country away
And all at once, you can hear the screaming chinks.
And then no one was save from the wave.
There was Africans drowning, little Chinaman swept away
You can heard god laughing, swim you bitches swim.

So now you're screwed, it's the the tsunami,
You better run and kiss your ass awake, go find your mommy
I just saw her float by, a tree right through her head.
And now your children will be sold in child slavery.

(Imitating Micheal Jackson)
"Oh on, please not the kids. I'll pay for all the kids.
all the little Indonesian kid, the little Asian kids, the Chinese kids.
the black, oh well, not the Black kids.
the White kids, the Puerto Rican kids.
I love them all. I'll pay for everything.
I promise I won't touch them."

These lyrics from the Hot97 radio station is not only insensitive, inhuman and ignorant, it is demonic to say the least!

As the word spread about this incident, Hot97 has attempted to remove all the contents such as MP3 (voice recorded files) from their websites to prevent more listeners to access the lyrics. However, many individuals have saved these files in order to file a complaint with the FCC. Furthermore, the original song played on the radio can still be readily accessible with a minimal efforts on Internet search engines such as Google.

Advisable as it is for one to pick and choose their battles wisely, Hot97’s bashing of Asian tsunami victims (ie: “You can heard god laughing, swim you bitches swim”) just cannot be tolerated. There have been many past occurrences of racism towards Asians in the media, that continues on without consequences, but for a tragedy of this magnitude, it is imperative that we take action against all individuals responsible for airing these racist lyrics, namely the entire Hot97 radio station.

If the content of this letter has in anyway infuriated you, I urge you to show your support by filing a complaint to the FCC and to forward this message onto others. It will take no more than just a few minutes of your time. For your convenience, the FCC’s information is provided below:

Not that it will matter to some of you, but when I made my earlier comment, the communities I was referring to were "East" and "West", not Black vs. Asian.

If you want to ride my ass for something, ride it for not writing my comment well. I'm not prejudiced, nor do I extend the sins of a few to the innocent slates of many.

I approve of Asian on Black bigotry about as much as I support Hot 97 and Power 99's recent shittiness.

These people just lived their lives then some disaster struck and some motherfucker wrote a song about it? damn man. this is supposed to be the time when we're to reach out to these people, not add insult to injury. think about what you'd feel if people laughed at your demise. what if your mother died coz of some sickness and people laughed and said you deserve it for something you didn't do.. fuck this man!

How could someone even think of joking about the tsunamis that hit South East Asia? How could they find it funny that so many people died? I just don't understand why this world is filled with idiots like the ones that came up with this song. And the fact that they are saying racial terms like "chink" and "chinamen" is completely messed up. China was not even one of the countries that was hit by the horrible tsunamis. Some people are so ignorant these days. I'm sure if Miss Jones family was killed by a huge tsunami, she wouldn't be laughing. I hope that Miss Jones gets fired and anyone else who participated or agreed with that song. I applaud Miss Info for disagreeing with the song and sticking up for herself.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON AIRING OF TSUNAMI PARODY SONG
January 21, 2005
HOT 97 regrets the airing of material that made light of a serious and tragic event. We apologize to our listeners and anyone who was offended.

HOT97 takes pride in its community involvement and in the last few weeks has joined with broadcasters nationwide to raise money for victims of the Tsunami. Our relief effort will result in a substantial cash donation.

As an additional sign of HOT 97’s commitment to the cause, Miss Jones in the Morning, along with her entire staff, have agreed to contribute one week’s pay to Tsunami Relief efforts.

If you wish to make a further comment, you can send an e-mail to the program director jdimick@hot97.emmis.com or you can write to WQHT, 395 Hudson Street, 7th Floor, New York, N.Y. 10014.

No matter how much they apologize, Miss Jones and Hot 97 are not ONE BIT sorry about the airing of the Tsunami song. Every morning they read the "hate email" aloud on the air. Miss Jones' ALWAYS laughs at the criticism and sees it as a positive because her show is being "talked about." And then she immediately plays the song as a symbolic "fuck you" to all that are offended. The whole Tsunami song is a SHAMELESS ploy to draw attention to the station and the Miss Jones morning show. Believe me - they knew the furor the song would cause and are relishing in every moment of it. As long as ratings increase who gives a damn! And you can believe people WILL tune in just out of curiousity. It's sad but it's the truth.

Posted by: mocha at January 23, 2005 02:17 AM

wtf? -"As an additional sign of HOT 97’s commitment to the cause, Miss Jones in the Morning, along with her entire staff, have agreed to contribute one week’s pay to Tsunami Relief efforts."-

Do they HONESTLY think that a week of paying to the tsunami relief will compensate for what they did? How about fire Miss Jones and pay until Southeast Asia is fully restored if they feel that bad.

Live in a fuckin cave and shit or what? How can you not know that the word "CHINK" is a racist word. Why don't you walk through any Chinatown in the U.S. and try calling Chinese people chinks...or better yet, try finding some Chinese Mafia or Asian gangsters...call them chinks! And then come back here to tell us about it...if you're still breathing.

"simply dont listen." is this idiot's solution. If these people in the story below simply didn't listen or do anything about Abercrombie and their racist actions, they would've never received $40 million in a class-action lawsuit.

DOING SOMETHING ABOUT RACISTS WORKS! DO NOT JUST SIT BACK AND IGNORE THE BULLSHIT!

Abercrombie & Fitch Settles Race Suit

Tuesday, November 16, 2004

LOS ANGELES — Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (search) has agreed to pay $40 million to black, Hispanic and Asian employees and job applicants to settle a class-action federal discrimination lawsuit that accused the clothing retailer of promoting whites at the expense of minorities, lawyers said Tuesday.

The settlement, approved Tuesday morning by U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston, requires the company to adhere to a consent decree that calls for the implementation of new policies and programs to promote diversity and prevent discrimination in its workforce. Abercrombie & Fitch also must pay about $10 million to monitor compliance and cover attorneys' fees, although the agreement contains no admission of wrongdoing by the company.

"We have, and always have had, no tolerance for discrimination. We decided to settle this suit because we felt that a long, drawn out dispute would have been harmful to the company and distracting to management," chairman and CEO Mike Jeffries said in a statement Tuesday.

In trading, Abercrombie & Fitch shares closed down 93 cents, or 2.1 percent, at $44.08 on the New York Stock Exchange. Wall Street had known the settlement was coming; last week, in its third-quarter earnings report, Abercrombie & Fitch had said it would pay $50 million to resolve the litigation.

The lawsuit originally was filed last June in San Francisco by Hispanic and Asian groups charging that Abercrombie & Fitch, known for its "classic casual American" clothing styles, hires a disproportionately white sales force, puts minorities in less-visible jobs and cultivates a virtually all-white image in its catalogues and elsewhere. A second, similar lawsuit was filed against the company last November in New Jersey.

Or BET, for faining to give equal time to white music. Better yet, I notice the nail salon at the mall only employs Asian women...I'll never have to work again! I'm going to be rich!

Honestly, this kind of bullshit is so ridiculous. If Abercrombie wants to ignore an entire demographic, and thus limit their sales potential, why should they be forced to do otherwise?

Unbelievable. I dont see you making a song about 9/11, why would you do this?

Also, your apology is weak. I hope your family members die in such tragedy, so I can mock it with a tasteless, disgusting song to amuse others.

Posted by: Shift_Likewhoa at January 23, 2005 01:10 PM

Wow...yeah funny shit. Hot97 has a pretty whacked sense of parody

Y'know, once, not too long ago the world was proclaiming that we were all New Yorkers. People came from all over North America to dig your dead out of the World Trade Centre.

This song is a disgrace. We're not new Yorkers anymore.

Posted by: Chris Corrigan at January 23, 2005 02:10 PM

I cannot believe that ADULTS would do such a thing. Yes, you hate asians, but it doesn't mean you could go around expressing your hatred. I, myself, also have some dislikes about other races, but I do not go around making songs about the people I hate. I am only 14 and I believe I am far more mature than you guys will ever be. This following quote suits the people of Hot97 well, "Empty barrels make the most noise". Just incase you guys do not know what this means, it means that people with nothing in their brains makes the most noise.
I suppose that you do not realize that Asians, in the USA and outside have made many important contributions to make USA and the world a better place. I, also suppose that you guys do not know that saying shit like this will damage the self-esteem of people. You are making Asians feel wothless, but they are not.
Did you know that China invented paper, gunpowder, compass, seismograph and many other things important to the world today. So why would you make fun of the Chinese when they contributed so very much to the world.
I am thoroughly disgusted with the song that you guys made about the victims of the Tsunami Disaster. you should know better that it is nothin g to laugh about. I wouldn't be laughing if some of your family members gets drowned in a big disaster. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. Like, what did those Asians ever do to you??? Nothing. Well you ethnicity isn't much better. Every race has their own faults. Not everyone is perfect.
I swear when I grow up, I will use all my power to close Hot97 down, if it even still exits. I, also, hope that the victims of the disaster will haunt you 'till the day of your death. You guys should just die, you people are just a waste of space on the Earth. Instead of making the beautiful planet we live in, better, you chose to make it worse. With that song that you people composed, hatred is brewing. Foreign countries will have a negative view of the USA. They will think that Americans are good for nothing, but to create offensive things to hurt other races.
Here comes the uneducated side of me: FUCK YOU BITCHES FOR PUTTING SUCH AN UNEDUCATED SHIT ON. YOU SHOULD ALL JUST FUCKING DIE, AND FUCKING GO TO HELL.I HOPE YOU WILL HAVE BAD LUCK THROUGHOUT YOUR
FUCKING WORTHLESS PEICE A SHIT LIFE. YOU GUYS ARE MOTHERFUCKING ASSHOLES THAT HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO IN LIFE BUT TO MAKE RACIST COMMENTS. GET A LIFE YOU BASTARDS. AND TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO SUPPORTS THIS KIND OF SHIT, FUCK YOU ALL, HATERS.

Dedicated to the wonderful Miss Jones:
I do not think that black people are any better than Asians. Most of the crimes in the USA are committed by black people. Black people are the cause of the downfall of America. And I most of your family memebers, miss jones, are on welfare Because they are dumb as shit and they are incapable of doing anything but smoke cigars and pot( that they steal from corner stores). They are also good for shooting people and raping women. They are also good at making fun of other people(miss jones). Im sorry that if anyone is offended by this, but i think that miss jones should be criticized for her actions. fuck you miss jones =D

Posted by: Mr. Jones at January 23, 2005 03:03 PM

I am disgusted and disappointed at how Ms. Jones has dealt with this tragedy. I would think that someone who has the opportunity to help others through the media would approach the situation with more compassion. I have seen racism perpetrated throughout our society; however I feel this event is probably one of the most inconsiderate and racist. Word to the wise for those posting their comments, please do not stoop as low as Ms. Jones and make offensive comments upon other ethnic and racial groups.

WITH A EXTREMELY BIG SHOTGUN
AND BULLET FROM ME TO YOU
WE ARE ONE BIG BLACK COMMUNTIYYYY.

YEAH, HOW DO YOU LIKE 'EM APPLES, MISS JONES.

like the above stated. i utterly cannot believe that adults would PUBLISH such a thing on public air. it's just like hollywood movies: sexual movies rated 14A, faul language, and many, many other related kinda shiet. i thought adults are supposed to be role models for us kids. but if they keep on corrupting our future like this, how are we supposed to grow up bright and strong and whatever shit they want us to be? if we turn out to be shit, they can't blame it on us.

this is just to prove how corrupted the world is: ppl find FUN and REJOICE when the TWIN TOWERS COLLAPSED and THEY HANG DEAD AMERICAN SOLDER'S BODIES in public places, and now this, A WELL-KNOWN AND RESPECTED(not anymore) public station PUBLISHES this ...SONG.

Next time if something like this happens in New York, let's change the lyrics around and direct it to THEM. then they can't come crying to us, cause it was originally their song!

four words: Proud to be Canadian!

What I do NOT understand are the myriad of comments here lumping the entire city of New York along with this radio station. It is ONE radio station, not the city. I find it insulting, as a New Yorker, that I should be lumped into same category as these filthy racist hypocrites.

To "x":

I've already mentioned that the song was wrong, just because there is a slur in the song doesn't equate to racism.

Where in the song did they imply they were better than asians? Where in the song did they make jokes about asian attributes? I surely didn't hear any jokes like that.

It was an insensitive song. PERIOD. They talked about afrikaans AND asians dying. Afrikkans doen't count (as usual)...it seems to me more people are upset that they used the term ch*nk than are upset about the song poking fun about HUMANS dying.

People who are out trying to make this an asian-black issue are idiots, so I guess that makes you one of them.

From "Anonymous" Comment:
"Although this song may offend some or most people, I am amazed that people were not equally disgusted and angry when Thailand and other Muslim dominated countries CELEBRATED when the Twin Towers came crumbling down.
YEAH, RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Posted by: Anonymous at January 21, 2005 04:01 PM

If and only if "Anonymous" would get it right. Thailand is actually a Buddhist Country. Over 80% of the people in Thailand are Buddhist. It is true that around the southern part of Thailand do have people that are mainly Muslim. But that is not the whole country. When you watch/listen to the media, most of the time you will see just the extreme on either side. They won't show the picture or the news piece about how people in other country felt sorry about what had happened to NYC, because that type of news don't sell. If you are going to quote a country that chops people's head off, quote the right country. Because Thailand is not one of them. Of is Afghanistan or Iraq too hard for you to spell?
And for this stupid Tsunami song that this radio station play.. why don't they come up with a 9-11 song too? It would be great if you would just play them back to back!

it is a racist issue

here: http://www.thesilent1.com/longer_hot97_tsunami.mp3
miss jones says to miss info "you think you're better..but you're not"

racism doesn't just refer to the definition of one race thinking they are innately superior. it can be an umbrella term for ignorance, fear, discriminatory or abusive behavior. i'm not going to lie to you, even though i am educated, i still have stereotypes running through my head because you grow up to them because of culture and society. but if you act on them, that is just wrong.

i am 18 and american. i have asian roots--my mother, father, grandparents, other family have come from china, however i am not south east asian.

people shouldn't be making this an asian/black issue. the song, although intended to be a parody, is the work of a few people.

we, as americans and the richest nation, should all be sending our love and support. not making crappy, senseless music.

Posted by: Lil at January 23, 2005 07:49 PM

To blame_Blacks?

If a racial slur is in a song, it doesn't make it racist...then what does? You said only if people make fun of the the attributes of the ethnic.
So if I call a black person a n*gger, it doesn't make me racist, because I didn't make fun of African attributes.

i think people who feel that this song is write and definately and totally screwed up. how can you think that it is okay to not feel compassion after so many people died? 212,611 people died, not asians, not africans but people. are we so blinded by racism and color that we no longer feel what is happening in this world? this is a natural diaster and we have never seen the likes of this before and hopefully we never will again. those people will have to live without homes, without family and friends and without anything that belongs to them. and all some people can say is "swim you bitches swim"? get a life idiots. this song is wrong. people throughout the world have united to raise money and send aid to those countries hit the hardest. and for what anonymous said i think that you need to get a clue. thai people didnt dance around and chop peoples head off, the terrorist groups did. you cant blame a whole nation or a whole religious group or race for something an amount of people chose to do. just like this whole song shouldnt be blamed onto african americans. it's just those insensitive asses who need to wake up and smell the roses before there arent anymore to smell.

Shaq -- yet another ignorant BIG-ASS dumbfuck

- In his most recent racial taunt of Yao Ming, Shaquille O’Neal told a reporter, “Tell Yao Ming, ‘ching-chong-yang-wah-ah-soh.’”

- Also in June, Shaq announced that he would test Yao’s toughness by taking an elbow to Yao’s face. This comment, combined with Shaq’s racist taunts are particularly disturbing, as Asian Pacific Americans often suffer racial taunts while being assaulted or physically intimidated.

- “I look forward to breaking down that mother f—’s body,” Shaq said of Yao Ming. “He said my name three times, two in Chinese and one in American. You don’t ever call me out. I’m from LSU.”

If you said, "They shot a n*gger." That would be considered a slur. Now, if you said, "They shot a n*gger and they need to kill more." Then THAT would be considered a racial remark.

I'm not here to defend the song, because the song is indefensible. I'm also not here to defend the staff, cuz they probably are jerks.

All I'M saying is that we shouldn't belittle the tragedy of the tsunami by getting pissed because they used a slur. People here and on the petition talking about "how would blacks like it if..." They got the wrong focus.

People should be upset because they made fun of an event where 1/4 of a million died initially and are still dying. I agree with the poster who said they need to do some relief work...body recovery detail.

Hey dumbfuck! it's a fuckin no-brainer that those assholes making fun of humans dying is fucked up so why point that out. There are 2 issues here. One, being the fucked up insensitive comments about the dead, and two, to TRY and educate these ignorant dumbfuckers like yourself who think that "just because there is a slur in the song doesn't equate to racism." Hearing people in the media use racial slurs and all that shit just leads to more violence by uneducated assholes. So yeah, we're gonna be just as upset at that shit like we are about the people who died in that tsunami.

You're obviously not Asian, so how the fuck can you relate? Have you ever been called a chink by someone with hatred in their tone of voice, threatening you just because you're a "fucking chink who doesn't belong here"? There are many (not all) Blacks who are known to be ignorant towards Asians. Don't believe me? Try living in South Central Los Angeles like I have. You can't relate asshole. Like Chris Rock said, "There's blacks, and then there's niggers."

The "people" at Hot 97 fall into the latter category.

Oh, and the tsunami did in fact reach African shores and killed hundreds of Somalis, so these "latter category" are doubly ignorant morons.

I am not surprised that a station that plays rap music would do something like this. Have you ever listened to the lyrics of some rap music? Much is degrading to women and represents prejudicial views. Some is just anti-social with vulgar lyrics.

Why is everyone surprised and upset about this prejudicial, vulgar, anti social parody? To me, it just more of the same garbage that is having a negative affect on our youth.

No, I am not Bill Cosby.

Posted by: DR.Bush at January 24, 2005 12:40 AM

You are right on the money Dr Bush. Rap these days has been a complete disgrace. Hardly anything positive or good has come out of it within recent years. There have been a few positive songs from old school pioneers like Too Short and his song "Gettin' It" and songs by The Roots and Mase, but lately it's all about how rich one is, material possessions, bitches, hos, violence, nigga this, nigga that, etc. Same ol cRAP. You have to go back to the days of Run DMC, Kool Moe Dee, and even before those guys to find decent rap.

Posted by: wordup at January 24, 2005 12:57 AM

I'm sad to see that so many of you have hatried towards black people because of the actions of a few idiots on Hot 97.

They do not represent ME. They do not represent MY beliefs. I am black, and I am ashamed and disgusted by the Tsunami song.

Miss Jones and whoever else participated in the song should know better. Considering all the racism and stereotyping that black people endured, you would think they'd have more compassion and would steer clear of such obscenely racist behavior.

PLEASE DO NOT JUDGE ALL BLACKS BY THE ACTIONS OF HOT 97. I AM BLACK AND I AM JUST AS ANGRY AS YOU ABOUT THIS DISGUSTING SONG.

Dear Lord,
Please help us take away whoever that have the guts to make fun of a serious tragedy....

Amen

what horrid people to broadcast such a song. not that they deserve it but i actually feel afraid of how hard they will be on themselves when they realise how nasty they have been.

..well we can only hope they'll realise and make up for it.

Posted by: angry aussie at January 24, 2005 01:35 AM

the song made me upset, to say the least. but i also do not believe in retaliation by using the same ugly tool used to attack us (asians)- racism. there are other ways to deal with such blatant hatred and ignorance. given these methods do not work well and efforts often ignored completely, i believe such efforts should be made nonetheless. hopefully future generations will be able to live in a more peaceful society because of such efforts made today.

To blame_blacks?....seriously bro....are you high on crack or what? Did you not read or hear this shit?!...

===
Then, after Miss Info has said the song is offensive to Asians, co-host Todd Lynn informs her: "I'm gonna start shooting Asians." Yes, he really says that. It's at 3:37 on the mp3.
===

That's not racism?! Saying "I'm gonna start shooting Asians" isn't racist? Put down the crackpipe and educate yourself. You stupid fuck!

Posted by: blame_blacks is an idiot at January 24, 2005 01:40 AM

first off... calm the fuck down. it's a song. it's not a person with a leash around a child's neck. ever wonder what the artist's point was? maybe it is to be vulgar to get people to realize how brutal the situation is. so instead of limiting the horizons, shut the fuck up and quit adding bleeps to every single fucking word. what happened to freedom of speech or expression. this is an artist excersizing his or her rights. censorship is not the side we should support. why don't you show your disrespect by simply not listening to that radio station.

racism isn't our biggest enemy, censorship is. once we can't say what we want, we loose our own identity as a race, as an artist, as a person, as an individual. so think about it. let freedom rise, not the FCC. someone will always think something is wrong. if every person got what they thought was wrong censored out, we would have nothing.

don't get me wrong, i'm asian. the song is offensive, but not as big of a deal as my ability to say fuck the FCC.

Posted by: sandyballs at January 24, 2005 01:45 AM

hey, sandy bitch...

there is a fine line between being an artist and common human decency

besides the racial slurs in the song being offensive, the following wasn't in the song...it was said to Miss Info, an Asian-American who didn't agree with that shit...

--Then, after Miss Info has said the song is offensive to Asians, co-host Todd Lynn informs her: "I'm gonna start shooting Asians." Yes, he really says that. It's at 3:37 on the mp3.--

So don't tell anyone to calm the fuck down asshole. I'm gonna take offense to someone saying they're gonna "shoot Asians" -- that is not a fucking joke. Try telling the police that you're gonna go shoot somebody...go to the airport and start saying that you're gonna shoot somebody...see if your freedom of speech applies then, you ignorant fuck! Go use a racial slur to a police officer. Tell him that you're using your freedom of speech. Fuck you bitch.

Posted by: fuck sandyballs at January 24, 2005 01:56 AM

this is garabage.. wtf is this THIS SHIT AINT EVEN FUNNY, they dont even know wtf chinks are, puh lease man... if they wanna know ill be happy to go down n show em.. omg im so mad rite now... where the fuk r these faggotz? errrr!!! Im not only mad about how racis these ppl are.. but they r making fun of people who lost their family!??! Wat the hel... i dunt even c a human single compassion in that.. wow... u gotta be kidding me... im just so mad right now.. these people need therapy

Posted by: Stanley at January 24, 2005 02:02 AM

hey sandyballs,
shut the fuck up!

using freedom of speech is a fucking lame excuse to hide the fact that someone is a fucking racist

sandyballs wrote:

Yeah right bitch, that was obviously the reason why they created that trash. That's why there are so many people who have already signed the petition. Yeah, you're right. They didn't do it for ratings or attention at all. They were creative artists and knew what they were doing. -- What a crock of shit!

Thank you to the person who created this forum. It has shown us how many more idiots there are in this country besides those assclowns at Hot 97.

Posted by: x at January 24, 2005 02:03 AM

well, i'm glad you're using your freedom of speech, but using racial slurs isn't my point.

Posted by: sandyballs at January 24, 2005 02:05 AM

umm... just to make another point... maybe saving your rage and supporting the victums by raising money would be more beneficial then to cuss at each other mindlessly.

your feed backs to this radio station actually helps it. so, maybe just quit reading, and search for an orginization that is currently helping the cause.

Posted by: sandyballs at January 24, 2005 02:16 AM

People, people, can we please try to discuss this without cursing each other out? I understand we have different opinions on this, and yes I agree most of what Sandyballs said is wrong, but all that abuse is not necessary.

dont involve ALL the black people in this, some of them are even against this. i feel bad for them cause they got dumbfucks representin them.

Everyone go to this site or fire up the fax machine:

http://www.tpc.int/sendfax.html

and send a fax to Hot97 reminding them how ignorant they are, and how normal people wont stand for this kinda shit.

Request Fax
(212) 924.4442

General Fax
(212) 929.8559

Dont forget country code and all the other numbers. If someone from New York could post the correct number to fax, it would be much appreciated.

Yes that remark is racist, but that remark is not part of the song. This "song" had been played many times before that.

What you heard at 3:37 was an arguement amongst the hosts over the song...not the song itself. So to judge the song over what the hosts said/did would be akin to judging the US constitution to be crap just because the people who authored it were slaveowners. The people and the song are two different things.

The fact that people here are more upset with me, when I'm in total agreement that it's a bad song, than they are upset with the folks who said they found the song funny speaks volumes as to why people are really upset.

This was a global event, more than just asians died. But in this "it's all about me and my race" age we live in, people are oblivious to the fact that that's what the song is making fun of; the death of so many people.

The song talks about a person going to get a tan and seeing a wave. They're talking about European tourists who died. The song talks about Afrikaans dying.

I said it once, and I'll say it again, people are more upset that they used a slur (interesting to see so many slurs used here) than the fact that they mad fun of Europeans, Afrikaans, AND Asians dying in that event.

That song was an attack against Humanity, more than just asians died. You have to put down the slurs and your angry feelings about blacks, and see that this song was a piss poor parody of the relief effort to help Africa, we are the world, as the world is again coming together to help the victims of tsunami...not just asian folk, but people folk.

Be mad, but be mad for the right reason. Don't fall for this petty racial crap, it's bigger than that.

To Rodney King:

Nigga puhlease...I'm a Black man myself so ain't nuthin wrong wit me using dat word...
Posted by Rodney King at January 23, 2005 11:46 PM

What bs! Blacks can call each other n*gger, but other "races" can't. What next? It's okay for black folks to shot each other?

I'm sure our parents (well, maybe your grandparents) marched so that we could gain exclusive rights to use racial slurs.

But that's a whole other topic. You are what you say you are, brother.

Posted by: blame_Blacks? at January 24, 2005 07:26 AM

That's it.. Keep throwing aroung the "R" word. Whenever some moron can't put together a decent argument they throw in "racist" to try to imtimidate.

Bill Cosby is right. Get off your phat ass and get a job. Stop blaming Whitey and the Gov-ment, stop collecting Gov-ment cheese and aspire higher!

making fun of people involved in a natural disaster is so funny, what next going to a retirement home and loosening the bolts on their wheelchairs? vulgarity and crassness is not humor(unless its on the Simpsons or Family Guy)

if you go to a crowded theater and yell 'FIRE! FIRE! FIRE!' that is not considered freedom of speech. neither is this.
