New EVEN WORSE Hot 97 Audio, and List of Sponsors (UPDATED)

1/31/05 UPDATE:
Todd Lynn Fired

The truth about the "informed insider" email

1/26/05 UPDATE: Hot 97 Announces Suspension, Details Unclear So Far

1/25/05 UPDATE: Jin Records Track Dissing Hot 97, Sponsor Pulls Their Ads

This Friday morning from 6 to 10 AM, the Hot 97 morning show will do a special live broadcast from Caroline's comedy club, on Broadway between 49th and 50th.

A group of NY City Councilmen had a press conference on this issue today, which was covered on TV by UPN 9, Fox 5, and WB 11 along with NY1 (viewable here). The WB report briefly showed a picture of this website, and credited all of you for your work on this issue.

1/24/05 updates: More weak statements from Hot 97 and Sprint here.

------------
I got my hands on a longer clip from this week's Hot 97 morning show, and it is ugly stuff indeed: longer_hot97_tsunami.mp3

On this tape you hear them introducing the "Tsunami Song," then Miss Jones and co-host Todd Lynn launching into an abusive tirade against Miss Info when she voices her objection to it. Miss Jones finally tells Info she's only complaining because "you feel superior, probably because you're Asian."

Then, after Miss Info has said the song is offensive to Asians, co-host Todd Lynn informs her: "I'm gonna start shooting Asians." Yes, he really says that. It's at 3:37 on the mp3.

In the meantime the NY Post has picked up on the story. And Hot 97 has posted an apology on their website, an extremely weak apology in my opinion. They aren't even willing to match that flimsy one day suspension Star and Buc got for the "rat eater" incident? Pathetic. And they still refuse to acknowledge the bigotry at all.

Over at okayplayer they started compiling a list of Hot 97's sponsors and how to contact them. I'll paste their findings here. Note that on the audio posted above, they basically tell us the Tsunami Song was "brought to us by" Sprint. I'm sure Sprint would love to know just what they've been bringing us [EDIT: Sprint has now suspended their ads, along with Mcdonald's] :

Hooray for the apology, I guess.

And by "hooray," I mean, "what in blazes are you idiots thinking?"

The least they could do is offer an on-air apology for that stunt. Preferably, that they yank the plug on the show.

While I won't begrudge anyone the right to express a viewpoint that I find reprehensible or offensive, I also believe that entertainers shouldn't go out of their way to alienate their demographics. I also believe that people who dissent from any viewpoint should be respected.

Anyway, I think Hot 97's AM ratings, at the very least, are going to fall quite a bit because of this stunt. So, maybe it'll get through their heads how stupid, pointless, and annoying (not to mention offensive) that message was.

Posted by: Chris at January 22, 2005 06:52 PM

The link to their "apology" from Ms Jones page on their site doesn't even work. I emailed them about that 24 hours ago - to the so-called program director. I guess they care enough about the apology being made available not to have fixed a simple broken link.

Posted by: prema at January 22, 2005 07:29 PM

American forces abroad are having a tough enough time as it is, and what Hot 97 are doing isn't helping them.

There's enough hate in the world without these idiots adding to it. And donating money doesn't absolve them of blame - doesn't matter what race or religion you are, forgiveness can't be purchased. The presenters should be sacked, or at the very least apologise and sent somewhere like Aceh.

Posted by: The Nugget at January 22, 2005 07:35 PM

they should shut down this radio station or fire these people..they are fuckin dumb as hell..fuckin stupid ass miss jones, fucking ugly bitch

Posted by: legend at January 22, 2005 08:14 PM

The apology doesnt matter if they still have the link to the song up on their website.

Posted by: Samehe at January 22, 2005 08:23 PM

Has anyone started a petition for them to be taken off of the air? Let's aim for the greatest punishment!

This time, at least, Ms. Info was standing up for herself and Asians. Usually, she degrades herself in order to comply to Ms. Jones and her co-hosts .

Ms. Jones is just a low-class hoodrat that will do anything for ratings and Todd Lynn is a low-class wannabe actor who will do anything for a gig.

Yet another morning show in the NYC that I'm boycotting.

Posted by: loretta at January 22, 2005 09:01 PM

See that's why she got fired here in Philly over her Chinkopoly on 103.9. I thought she learned her lesson.

Posted by: Q at January 22, 2005 09:30 PM

"We apologize to our listeners and to anyone who was offended," Dimick said. "[The show's entire seven-person staff] has agreed to contribute one-week's pay to the tsunami-relief efforts." John Mainelli

according to the NY post...does this mean that Miss Info had to pay a weeks salary despite the fact that she vocally objected against the clip and stood up to them? Wtf?!?

Posted by: J at January 22, 2005 10:04 PM

Who, in the Tri-State area, would be willing to protest in front of Hot 97's studios? Just wondering so that we can do something in-their-face and proactive (after the snow storm, of course...blah)

shame on Miss Info. They say "chink" in the song. Whoa- how could she just take that? They said "chink".

Why argue with Jones? They said "chink" in the song.

And this isn't the first time Jones has tried to son Info. I heard one argument on air that seemed to be heated way past extra.

But this time they played a song saying "chink". I wouldn't leave th show, but Jones wouldn't get away with that so easily.

Miss Jones is one of the dumbest DJs I ever listened to. She was overshadowed by Star and Buck Wild when they did the show together because she did not have the intelligence to keep up with Star. I can't believe they gave her the morning show, she can barely speak proper English and has a temper problem. Bad temper and stupidity don't mix.

That song is ridiculous. You can make fun of a lot of things, but not a tragedy when 200,000+ people died. The best part is, from a creative standpoint, the song sucks no matter what it's about. The talent left Hot 97 when Star and Buck left.

I heard this on a car forum of all places. Well I must say I am quite pissed off. Not only do they insult Asians around the world, but they are laughing in the faces of countless dead. People of low class usually show ignorance and hate such as this. I already emailed a few of the sponsers and I hope you all do the same. It's funny how they say the people will be sold into slavery when the Africans in history suffered so much so they can all be free. Call it hipocracy, call it idiocy, whatever it is, it's unacceptable. My friends and I are boycotting Hot 97. They need to step up to the fact that they screwed up, make public apologies and fire the people who were responsible and let it happen.

Posted by: James at January 23, 2005 09:54 AM

i'm currently writing a letter to all the corporations that sponsor the radio station. if these hosts aren't fired in a week, i will send the letter detailing the radio station's activities and lack of a response to the incident. until then, we need to get as many signatures as possible so its a convincing sum when i link them to the petition...

Posted by: Prizm at January 23, 2005 10:16 AM

I learned about this from a doll blog of all places (mainly because the blog writer is of Asian descent). Ironically this came from a radio station that's based in New York City--one of the scenes of the 9/11 attacks. How would Miss Jones feel if a radio station in--let's say--Canada had done a parody song of the World Trade Center attacks that included liberal use of the "N" word? Would she think that it was absolutely hysterical or would she had gone on an on-air tirade against that station?

I live in the DC area and I can remember when a deejay known as Greaseman was fired from his job at a rock station because he mentioned how Lauryn Hill was up for a Grammy award and he played a snippet from it. He mentioned "That's why they drag people behind trucks", which was a reference to that notorious case Texas where a pair of white men had taken an African American man, shackled him to a pickup truck, then dragged him for several miles. (The trial of those white men was happening at the time that the Greaseman made those remarks.)

Well, many African Americans in the area were outraged at that remark plus they still remembered a previous Greaseman joke made several years before where he said--on Martin Luther King Day--"All we need is to kill four more black people and we'll get the whole week off." Well Greaseman not only lost his job but his deejay career has yet to recover and, last I heard, he had to actually buy air time on this very low-rated radio station just so he could work again.

I hope the same fate happens to those who had anything to do with that tsunami song.

Posted by: Kim at January 23, 2005 10:40 AM

Why would you make a racist comedy sketch based around a horrible tragedy? DId HOT 97 make any "funny" songs about 9/11 after that happened? I don't think so...so why do they think they can make one about this tragedy? Oh yeah...because it happened in Asia and not the USA.

So the station apologized, and not even a word from any of the Miss Jones morning show staff (except for Miss Info). Not that them saying anything would even matter, their apologies would be complete bullshit. They wont mean a word of it.

And to say, "I'm going to start shooting asians"... What the fuck? Because we don't like being called chinks? Because an Asian said that she didn't support being called a chink or support mocking the death of 220,000 people? They all need to be fired except for Info and in every mail I sent, I said the same thing.

I used to get upset at seeing people being offensive on this scale. Nowadays, I don't anymore because everyone's gotta realize that some people are just more lowly educated and less bestowed in intelligence capacity such as Jones and her "african" crew. I don't expect better from them because they probably had been subjects of extreme racism themselves and are just attempting to lamely salvage some self-esteem in this terrible terrible manner. Those who died rest in peace, and may those who make fun of them rot in hell like jones and the rest of her gangsta human filth crew.

Thank you so much for giving the contact info for the sponsors. I just wrote to them saying now that they know about this issue, that they have a social responsibility to withdraw their funding. To continue to provide support will show the public that they condone such racist tendencies. I also said that if they continue to be HOT 97's sponsors, the APA community at LA and nationwide is prepared to stop using Sprint's services, buying reebok apparel, and eating at McDonalds and Popeyes. I hope we remain strong and united in this issue!

I don't know where to start. The narrowmindedness , ignorance, racial slander, and disrespect of Miss Jones and Todd Lynn to Miss Info just make me drop my jaw. This is in NY most diverse in ethnicity. How dare they pull this on air! I used to listen to 97 but now HELL NO! BOYCOTT! And I plan to make this matter be known to my friends and students at my college and other colleges. Aside from this, HOW DARE THEY MAKE FUN OF THIS TRAGIC PACIFIC TSUNAMI INCIDENT? How could they do this? Miss Jones and her DJ probably do not have any sympathy towards hundreds of thousands who had just lost entire familes, lives, and homes! IDIOTS! And how shameless are they to make fun of this tragedy with a STUPID BADLY SUNG mockery of a song? Some things are funny but this just is not. The people at Hot 97 should know better. Miss Info has a right to express her views. I'm glad she stood up to what she thinks. I just hope there are fewer of these racial slanders towards any ethnicity in the future. I just hope ... and will take some action.

I remember an argument that Miss Jones, was arguing about how MEN have their pride to have to take care of the house, to be the MAN of the house and all. Then when asked what her role was, she says I TAKE CARE OF MY OWN. He inquires further and says like what, give us an examples. She goes on and says, such as I make sure dinner is on the table for my man, I make sure my man has clean clothes and I make sure the house is tidy ! HA

Loretta & Everyone in this discussion,
as far as mobilizing goes...i'm open to different strategies. i think everyone here putting in their efforts to write to the station & their sponsors is a good and important start, and the petition that Prizm began is definitely a good step further.
i would be into a protest outside the doors of hot97, as someone here previously mentioned. i think we need to make some noise en masse, make this very public -- get the media (not just the post) to cover it.
i don't know if meeting with anyone over there would do any good and i'd be too suspicious of their lip service, and obviously if they haven't already pulled the piece from the show & their site and think that bullshit token apology absolves them of their hate talk, then there's obviously a huge disconnect going on in their vacant heads. they need to be faced with real consequences (monetary loss, listenership loss), real people joining together against this. and they need to be fucking scared.

I would love to call up hot97 and tell them how much black people suck, how they are the ones that fill up our prisons, cause crime in our cities, teach their kids to listen to horrible rap music (with all that cursing and stuff) instead of teaching them how to read and write. Maybe thats why the United States is outsourcing all of our jobs to Asia (not Africa).

Hmmm...... something to think about....

"apostlebatman,"

you need to take YOUR RACISM and hide in a big black hole, no pun intended.
your sentiments are as abominable, offensive, and IGNORANT as miss jones & her cohorts. you are no better than them, and are absolutely NOT HELPING OUR CAUSE HERE.

Posted by: asdfasdf at January 24, 2005 12:25 AM

Sorry if it came out racist, but was just trying to make a point. Kinda was upset. I myself am an asian born and raised here in new york, and I am friends with everyone (all colors loved). Just upsets me that a station like hot97 which I listen to daily would be like that.

what the hell,
This is so wrong, racism like this shouldn't be tolerated. Their apology on their website is a very weak one and won't make up for what they did. Even by donating their weeks pay, still isn't worth the mental damage they've caused. Those people have no right to be on the radio and air their voices.

"i'm going to start shooting asians" WHAT IS THAT SH*t. nice threat, i hope those people lose their jobs. If i was their sponsors i would rethink who they have sponsored, as this is a reflection on them selves, showing who they back as sponsors.

That was just about the most tasteless shit ive ever heard in my life. Miss Jones had no fucking point at all in her argument. She just said the same shit over and over, and louder and louder. Maybe the Asian woman wanted to seperate herself from that stupid song for a reason. Because it was tasteless you dumb cunt. How could she even argue about it? The song was horrible, and it wasnt funny what so ever. Would a song about blacks in Africa dying of AIDS or Ebola be funny to you? I didnt think so. I hope everyone that was involved with that song gets AIDS.

hey. maybe they put jones up against info in smackfest 05. info can then lay the appropriate smack down on her gaptoothed ass.

Posted by: whatever at January 24, 2005 01:53 AM

I can't believe how insensitive a radio station could be. Especially, one, who has been through September 11, 2001. Ms. Jones is racist in my eyes. To see this song as anything but racist is beyond me. The song is horrible, disgusting and makes fun of Asians people. This would be the same as if someone would have made fun of MS. Jone's race and her weight problem.

Posted by: rapmusicsuckitysucksyo at January 24, 2005 03:24 AM

here's what i wrote to em:
I've been reading up on the situation regarding the distasteful song
that your station has been playing on a daily basis. First of all, if
you guys had read what was going on at all you knew it didn't affect
any China at all. Obviously some Chinese people were involved but so
were people from many different nations. To refer to everyone as
Chinese is downright moronic, and to actually take the time to record
then play the song on a daily basis is even more moronic. Furthermore,
I find that the situation between Miss Jones, Todd Lynn, and Miss Info
reflects very poorly of your station's integrity, staff and your
station as a whole. I find it hard to believe that Miss Info was the
only one at the station that had enough common sense to realize that
the song is less than garbage and should not be played. When she tried
to object, Miss Jones and Todd Lynn verbally assaulted her. To quote
Todd Lynn "I'm gonna start shooting Asians" (at 3:37 into the
argument). Though I doubt he was going to do that, when a threat like
that is made over a media broadcast it must be considered a genuine
threat. Am I being led to believe that Todd Lynn is really going to
start shooting Asians and that your station hires murderers? Miss
Jones then used the "you feel superior, probably because you're Asian"
line to justify playing the song? Newsflash, Miss Info doesn't feel
she is superior because she's Asian, she's trying to stop your station
from playing a ridiculously racist song to save the integrity of your
station. If Miss Jones or the station does not realize that, then Miss
Info can be considered superior, not because she's Asian, but because
you all display little to no intelligence. Another thing is, in the
song the words "Chinks" and "Chinamen" are used. Apparently your
station sees fit to use such racist terms in their songs even though
they have a hired Asian on staff. What gives you the right to call us
"chinks" or "chinamen"? Is it different from me calling your staff
"ni^^ers" and "n&gros"? Of course, if I were to make a random song
that glorifies the deaths of over 160,000 people and identify all of
them as African Americans then proceed to refer to them as the n word,
I would be deemed a racist and have your whole station petition to put
me in jail. Or maybe you'll have Todd Lynn shoot me since I'm Asian.
So what gives you the right to call us "chinks"?
I realize you guys posted an apology on the site. I find it rather
weak and lacking in sincerity. The staff may be giving a week's salary
to help the situation but it seems as though you are using that as an
excuse to justify the racist lyrics in the song. If you are serious
about rectifying the situation, terminating (and I don't mean
shooting) Miss Jones and Todd Lynn as well as providing a public
apology to Miss Info would be a decent start in addition to the
donation. Anything less is a joke.

i wanted to use the line "your apology is as weak as the integrity and credibility of your radio station"...too bad i thought of it after i sent it lol

Posted by: danktrees at January 24, 2005 03:55 AM

i am disgusted of what i heard. i'm tired of the group of ignorant people who think they can get away with racist remarks, just because their ancestors went through slavery. that's their excuse for everything. hell.. they weren't even there... for slavery. if they're suffering for it now.. then it's they're damn fault. imagine what hell we would get if there was a song made to make fun of how the slaves were treated back then, or how funny it is that highest percentage of people infected with aids is blacks, or how funny the skinny africans are... starving in africa. see... thing is.. that's not funny. and even if it was... we wouldn't be as insensitive as them... to stoop to their level... and write a lame-ass song.

You are all alot of ......Well lets just say "well-fair people" with alot of time on your hands....Get a life and go back to China or Thieland or korea or whatever GOOK area you come from and stop bitching about jokes.......
gooks, slanteyes, nips, These are just a few slurs I can come up with real quick......I know of some real EVIL that has been done by them....As well as by every other race.....Just get over the bitching............It will not help .
The only other thing I will do is show what each race is good at:

* White american men cannot be first as this would be racist.
Arabs-Great at renting cars or trucks without proper authroity.

Gooks(This excludes the japs)-Really good at digging holes.

Japs-The BEST and NUMBER one at killing themselves while trying to learn to fly!

China-Gooks-The people of China made some fireworks.

So far all we have is some slateye who can not really fly trying to blow up something with nothing.

This is boring as I used to care about all this stuff years ago......I can sit and offend with no problem and it still means NOTHING..Grow up or shut up as no cares and if they do, they will not soon.

Posted by: 14 year old boy at January 24, 2005 10:36 AM

This only confirms what God is trying to tell all of us. The "god" referred to in the song can only be Satan. He is the only one that could laugh at such an offensive song and is still laughing. The God I know will not be laughing when He imposes His judgment on all involved.

funny how people are getting on Miss Jones and company but then saying racist stuff themselves. i thing the song was horrible and insensitive to say the least, but for someone to come on here and say it was bad then turn around and make racist remarks about blacks makes you even worse than miss jones. she is an ignorant racist, but you are a ignorant racist who is also a hypocrite.

Posted by: Josh at January 24, 2005 11:24 AM

PLEASE begin contacting sponsors to tell them you will no longer patronize them until they pull their advertising dollars from HOT 97. It s the only way to get back at the station for airing a song as sick as this and making the rest of us look bad to the world. Their apology is meaningless.

Its not just about the racsim... what about making fun of the disaster in general.... Orphaned children and devastation affect all races.

Posted by: Kelly Baker at January 24, 2005 11:44 AM

instead of just complaining on some thread, i have already emailed all the news stations in New York. UPN got back to me in less than 5 minutes.

also, to reply to an above comment i agree the disaster is horrible, and the racism is ignorant.

Posted by: Josh at January 24, 2005 11:49 AM

Any confirmation on the 12pm news conference?

Posted by: Tom at January 24, 2005 11:57 AM

Josh,
Can you elaborate on what UPN said?

Posted by: James at January 24, 2005 12:00 PM

I sent them an email saying what happened (Miss Info objecting, Todd Lynn and shooting asians, the whole 9) and sent them a link so they could download the song itself. UPN replied and said that they were doing research already to cover the story. I only recieved a generic reply from NBC. No reply from CNN.com, WB11, or CBS.

I highly think you will get a bunch of people to turn out on the steps of hot97. Black folks don't come together unless it's summerjam, believe me i am black, and i have tried to get people to boycott Fat Joe for his use of the N word, as well as J. LO. but my people dont seem to care

Posted by: Josh at January 24, 2005 12:31 PM

I have to say, and I'm going to shout here, that THIS FALLS WITHIN FREE SPEECH IN THIS COUNTRY. I don't doubt that the idiot Ms. Jones should be fired pronto, but she should have been fired a long time ago. BUT if someone's a racist, I want them to stumble all overthemselves and make themselves look stupid. I want free speech to flush out any crap values people have on judging people. The more that happens AND people get called out on it, then the less people will tolerate that kind of thought/action. NOT that she should have a public forum (any more) to voice these views, really.

my two cents. I don't think this is an FCC issue. the FCC is not, and should not be a censorship policymaker/administrator, constutionally. PERIOD.

I'm surprised no one else has said anything to this effect on the board.

btw, i'm appalled but, i have to say, amused at what a fucking TRAIN WRECK this was.

i also REALLY hope that Miss Info didn't get fined as well and if she gives a week's salary towards the Tsunami fund she has a choice about it. She shouldn't be penalized.

best

Jones is a dumb ass ignorant bitch who should not only be fired but made sure that she does not have the chance again.....

Posted by: Amy at January 24, 2005 02:16 PM

Believe me I'm furious as hell but we should not toss around the N word around this forum, we do not need to sink down to Jones' level and offend a whole race of people. What is more effective is to pressure John C. Liu Manhattan Office Phone No.: (212) 788-7022 for him start a demostration outside of the radio station.

Posted by: James at January 24, 2005 02:24 PM

I am an African American from New York and I was outraged when I heard the Tsunami song on Hot 97. In fact the first time I heard it, I sent an email to the station as soon as I got to work.

The entire song was offensive from the use of the word "chinks" to saying that ophaned children would be sold in child slavery. THE ENTIRE SONG IS DISGUSTING!!!

On that note, I must say that what I've been reading on this message board is NO BETTER than what Hot 97 has done. How can any of you have the right to be angry at Miss Jones and the morning crew, when you have the same racist hatred in your hearts? You are no better or different than them. It is people like you that perpetuate this BULLSHIT.

If anything we should all join together (blacks, asians, whites, and whoever else) to bring Hot 97 or at least Miss Jones' morning show DOWN. There is strength in numbers and UNITY.

How incredibly STUPID is that? How can you throw stones at a bigot, when you're a bigot yourself? DUH!

Posted by: mocha at January 24, 2005 02:26 PM

Go on, Mocha! I support you and your comments all the way!

Came back from the press conference at City Hall. The FCC is not claiming this song as indecent because "chink," "chinaman," and other words in the song are not profane.

Call Richard at the FCC at 202-448-1000 and harass him because he does not think it's worth his time to take down these complaints as there are other issues he thinks are more worthy!

Posted by: LS at January 24, 2005 02:28 PM

Sorry I didn't get back to you on the press conference. Yes, it was real and I was there. See highlights of it on UPN and Channel 11 tonight. We need more people to support! There were only a handful of people there plus reporters.

Councilmember Liu and his colleagues (other NYC councilmembers) want to target first the FCC and then the advertisers. I just posted a message for everyone to harass Richard at the FCC, who does not think the song is worthy of a complaint. Liu may put a protest into place but he does not think meeting with the execs at Hot 97 is a step at this point.

From what I hear, the execs have been inaccessible for meetings or phone calls b/c they are in meetings with themselves about what to do. And, there were public apologies every hour on the hour on the show this morning...of course this does not suffice..

Many of the councilmembers want the Morning Show crew fired, so let's hope they enact this through letters and calls.

Will let you know what I hear next-please be there if a protest goes down!

Posted by: LS at January 24, 2005 02:36 PM

I heard that Opie and Anthony were playing the Song on XM radio. Anyone have any information about that? Because if they were, I would like to start badgering XM radio also. Depending on if O+A were using it as informational or to laugh at the Tsunami victims.

Posted by: Anonymous at January 24, 2005 02:38 PM

Thanks LS for the update. I'm outraged over this kind of public disgrace towards people of different race/ethnic background. They should know better than that. Something more serious has to be done to teach them a lesson. Being on the west coast, I wish I can be more involved in this issue. Protesting outside of their studio will defnitly get some attention.

Posted by: WestSide at January 24, 2005 02:44 PM

after reading about this, i'm feel insulted and am very unhappy about the fact that they were allowed to used such words over the radio. also being that many many people listen to their station, including parents and children. so what that they had to lose one weeks pay. that just means that i can go on the radio and say racially insulting words and get away with it for one weeks pay. that is some F***ed up s***. i think the punishment should have been to a more harsher degree. i'm all up for the protest. quite frankly i'm getting sick of how this society allows people to racially insult and discriminate other; for example asians in general.

Posted by: silence at January 24, 2005 02:57 PM

This story is sad, I don't know how much this will help but I emailed FoxNews and CNN asking them to take up these stories. The issue at hand is not so much the 'need for an apology'. It's the fact that Hot97's morning crew basically said that it's ok to be a bigot and a racist as long as you 'apologize' for it later. They knew full well what they were saying and that they were saying in a public forum where hundreds of people were listening.

Hopefully if CNN and FoxNews get enough request they'll take up this story and bring added pressure to Hot97 and anyone else who's trying to air the song.

Personally I think the punishment should be that the morning crew be sent to the devasted areas of Southeast asia to help. In fact they should be brought to Thailand, and the locals should be told what they did. See what happens then...It's easy to make fun of people's suffering when you don't have to see it firsthand.

Posted by: Ming at January 24, 2005 03:06 PM

also note that the apologies are BS. the day after they originally played the song, people called in and complained, people even called in to say other radio stations in other markets were targeting them. Miss Jones told them all that they are not the boss of her, and she will play it whenever she wants, then played it yet again

Just Stop listening to the station... The true power that the station is looking for is ratings and publicity.

Granted this song is bad.. really bad. But if the FCC is not gonna step in and do something, other than not listening to such "trash" and not giving our dollars to those who willingly support or condone this behavior, there isn't much else to do.

What really bothers me is the reactions I see from those on this board or at least its visitors. I invite some of you to scroll back up and read some of the comments that have been posted (Big Ups to Jay for screening some of the worst comments out) and the hateful nature that was exihibited in the name of another wrong.

I looked at the list of advertisers and chuckled. Sprint - sucking wind in the mobile phone market right now. which means they are now getting publicity for their product.

Popeye - As non-nutritious as their food is they don't care what is said, Just get someone to recognize they are still trying to make chicken.

Reebok - needs any kind of publicity can you say dying breed of shoes.

Posted by: Belve at January 24, 2005 03:43 PM

Its sad to see that such a influential station such as HOT 97 in NEW YORK (of all places!) allow to put this sort of filth on the air, and then does NOTHING to justify their racist actions. A one paragraph apology and one week's salary is not enough. I am sure all hell would break loose if someone made a song of 911 or said the same comments about any other ethnic group. Asian Americans have been putting up with too much crap in the media and its time to take a stand. This has been repeated many times throughout this weblog, but Miss Jones and her entire crew should be FIRED (excluding Miss Info) and anyone else above them responsible for the insulting song should be reprimanded as well. I am equally disgusted with the way Miss Jones and co. attacked Miss Info when all she was doing was the right thing! I don't find any part of the song funny, and being a hiphop fan from Los Angeles, I will never listen to HOT 97 when I am in NY or any affiliate of that garbage station again.

Posted by: JK at January 24, 2005 03:47 PM

I'm often irresponsible, but that's acceptable because I'm a growing 22-year-old individual--I'm not a leading urban radio station with far-reaching influence. While humor can be an effective means toward our collective recovery from such heartbreaking tragedies as the recent tsunami, Hot 97's broadcasting of the "Tsunami Song" reflects poor decision-making and lack of consideration. If the intended effect was listener laughter, then couldn't they have had a skilled songwriter craft lyrics that make us laugh at ourselves and force us to see things in a new light? Their song just made far too much light out of a horrific monstrosity for it to be considered anything remotely related to good taste.

I've read the comments here. Don't fight hate with hate. This should not become an Asians vs. Blacks war. Don't give whoever wrote that song the satisfaction of the suggestion that he/she is representing an entire race of people with his/her unacceptable stupidity.

This is not and should not be a situation where Asians lump all African-Americans together over one ignorant woman (okay, and one ignorant man - Shaq). Is it easier to hate an entire race than to hate the hate? Anyways, I'm Asian and I am more sad about this than anything else. I'm angry, of course, but I think good can come out of this as long as ALL MINORITIES pull together and put up a common front (Asians, Southeast Asians, African-Americans, everyone that's been a victim of racism, prejudice, bigotry, etc.).

It's time to stop the bullshit, people. African-Americans are not the enemies of Asians and vice versa. It's the racist assholes -- they are the "enemy" so to speak. We should conduct ourselves as such. By the way, racist assholes come in all different shapes, sizes and color.

Posted by: Julia K. at January 24, 2005 04:32 PM

By the way:

"As with Star (Troi Terraine), this is not the first incident in which "Miss Jones" has made racially inflammatory comments. In response to the sale of a board game called Ghettopoly which contains racially derogatory themes about Blacks, Jones enflamed an already racially charged situation by asking listeners make their own board game called "Chinkopoly" and to call-in with their own derogatory stereotypes of Asians as retaliation towards Ghettopoly's creator who is an Asian immigrant. Miss Jones advocated retaliation towards the entire Asian American community for the act of one individual despite the fact that Asian American organizations denounced the game and its creator."

Check it out: http://www.asianmediawatch.net/missjones/index.html

ALSO:
I thought ya'll might find it interesting that this isn't the first (nor probably the last) racial incident involving HOT 97 DJ's.

It's really ignorant for asians to start saying racist things. This is NOT an asian vs. black thing, that's stupid.
This is a few ignorant people, saying ignorant things that will probably get them a nice spot in hell where satan will shove pineapples up their asses.

And for the people who dont think this is a racial issue and that asians are just being "too sensitive"... Imagine if a DJ on the radio said, "I'm going to start shooting Black/Spanish/White/etc people". I can't even IMAGINE somebody saying some shit like that on the radio.. that they're going to start killing a certain race of people. That is fucking outrageous

Posted by: Tomithy at January 24, 2005 05:02 PM

that apology is not enough. you cannot buy back what they did.

imagine if thousands in brooklyn or the bronx had died and they aired a similar song?? she would be fired and there would be much more damaging reprecussions.

STATEMENT FROM SPRINT

* Sprint does NOT have any connection to the Tsunami Song aired on Hot 97 FM.

* Sprint strongly objects to any communication or other effort making light of the devastation of the tsunami disaster. The content of the "Tsunami song" clearly runs contrary to Sprint's commitment to diversity and inclusion, and is not in any way supported or condoned by Sprint. Needless to say, our hearts go out to the tsunami victims and their families -- for this and other reasons, the Sprint Foundation and our associates have worked together since the tsunami tragedy to raise funds for disaster relief efforts and will continue to do so.

*Sprint has purchased advertising time on Hot 97 but was incorrectly identified as a sponsor of the segment of the show in which the song was referenced. In any case, Sprint was unaware and had no connection to the content of the "Tsunami Song."

*Sprint has expressed our strong concern about this content to the radio station. The station has issued a public apology and appears to have disciplined the responsible parties. Sprint continually evaluates acceptable content against our own guidelines and we will continue to monitor the process with all outlets in which we advertise.

I urge you guys to continue sending him e-mails, cause apparently he feels that the public apology is sufficient. Please mention that you will not purchase any products or services from Sprint until appropriate action is taken. Thanks

Posted by: chris at January 24, 2005 06:33 PM

I'm asian. You asians that are posting racist shit on this site need to shut the hell up; you're not helping your cause. shut your mouths. That said, "chink" or "chinaman" coming from someone that is not asian is infuriating. Its a racial slur, same as "nigger". It was meant to make a race of people feel less human than another. And yes, there is a double standard. The media still thinks its ok to say "chink" on air. I'm glad to see that we're not putting up with it anymore. If I saw miss jones or todd lynn lying bleeding and dying on the street, I would smile and walk on.

Racism towards Asians, brought to you by Hot 97! In the wake of the
devastating Tsunami, some Hosts at Hot 97 (Miss Jones & Todd Lynn) -
find the perfect opportunity to propagate their hate towards Asians.

As star powered celebs and ordinary citizens do what they can to raise
money and pray for the victims, Hot 97 relishes the fact that many
people died, have no family, no home and no hope!

How hypocritical is Hot 97? They down play this issue and try to
protect it's own, when they are clearly out of line. I guess racist
propaganda at Hot 97 is tolerated and supported as long it's directed
to everyone else but Blacks?

What a joke this radio station. I will never buy anything that's ever
advertised on Hot 97. I will recommend shorting the parent company
Stock and any other company that continues to advertise with this
company.

I have already carbon copied several of my close clients and friends.
There will be a significant financial impact to this. I guarantee it.
I will recommend BOYCOTTING EVERY SINGLE ADVERTISER associated with
Hot 97.

How anybody can condone killing Asians or make fun of the thousands
that have died, is just incredible. Does Sprint condone the sale of
children as sex slaves? Does the FCC find it funny that the thousands
of Tsunami victims will grow up never listening to the radio because
their belongings along with their families were all washed away?

I also worked at the World Trade Center and will never forget or
forgive those who participated in the murderous act. Let alone those
who condone further deaths to a single race or ethnicity. This was no
joke. This was pure hate spewing out of Miss Jones and Todd Lynn. I
can understand and accept an apology to a joke but this was PURE HATE!
Condoning others to take part in the killings of more Asians.
This is what your company thinks is ok? This is what the FCC thinks is ok?

include in your emails to the FCC Chairman - Michael Powell. He is also black so lets see how he will respond when it comes to disciplining the Black radio stations. He has been aggressively handing down fines and investigations with Howard Stern but none with Hot 97, that I know of.

email the following ppl. It does make a difference:

These idiots want to make money at anyway, even mentioning micheal jackson out of desperation.

Can one imagine Bob Geldof promoting a racist song about the african famine?

I hope one sensible band will make a new song about the tsunami and succeed and prove these idiots that they done it the wrong way.

Posted by: Chris at January 24, 2005 07:38 PM

Hot 97, Emmis, and advertisers,

Hot 97's apology for the Tsunami song cannot possibly be adequate because it doesn't even acknowledge the depth of what happened. The song was offensive for making light of a tragedy. But, moreover, it was racist. And when Jones said "asians think they are superior" and Todd Lynn responded, "I'm gonna start shooting Asians," it was an incitement to racial violence. This is way beyond an offensive joke, and so far Hot 97 hasn't even admitted the seriousness of the situation.

Perhaps someone who uses the media to be offensive should be "disciplined" in some way. That is up to station management. But someone who uses the media to incite racial violence should not be allowed to use that forum anymore. They should find a new job.

Michael McGregor

Posted by: Michael at January 24, 2005 07:40 PM

This is what I wrote to Michael Powell.
You guys think this is appropriate??

Do you really think that it is fine that people make fun of Asians????
Do you think it is fine that people make fun of a terrible tragedy????
Do you really think it is fine that a person threatens an Asian on air????
Do you really think it is fine for people of Hot97 to broadcast a song, that has racial slurs in it????
Do you really think it is fine for a Black insult and Asian????
But is it not fine for an Asian insulting a Black???
Do you really think a tragedy with 160,000 deaths is funny????
Do you think it is fine to not fine Hot97 for making racial slurs????
But you think it is fine to fine Howard Stern for making racial slurs.
From your actions, it seems to me that you only take actions if something offends the African-American race; and you do not give a flying F- if another ethnic is being offended(e.g. Asian).
Do you think a GOOD Chairman would do this?
Or do you think a GOOD Chairman will take actions, regardless of the ethnic being insulted.
Think about it...

RESPONSE:

Dear Julia:

HOT 97 regrets the airing of material that made light of a serious and
tragic event. We apologize to our listeners and anyone who was
offended.

Both HOT 97's program director and Miss Jones issued on-air apologies on
Monday stating that the material was offensive and should not have been
aired.

HOT 97 takes pride in its community involvement and in the last few
weeks has joined with broadcasters nationwide to raise money for victims
of the Tsunami. Our relief effort will result in a substantial cash
donation.

As an additional sign of HOT 97's commitment to the cause, Miss Jones in
the Morning, along with her entire staff, have agreed to contribute one
week's pay to Tsunami Relief efforts.

Thank you for contacting us.

Miss Jones is so quick to insult Miss Info for acting like she was "superior for being Asian" but when Star made fun off Aaliyah's death a few years ago, Miss Jones was "outraged"...

Excerpt: When Star and Buc Wild Show Featuring Miss Jones" informed listeners of Aaliyah's death, he then, in an attempt to be funny, played an audio clip/sound effect of a plane crashing - - complete with a woman screaming right before the "crash and burn" explosion. Co-Host Miss Jones, totally fed up, goes off on him, curses at him (live/on-air) and storms out.

She is such a hypocrite!

The song was horribly offensive and insensitive. However, equally insulting is Miss Jones and Todd Flynn's racially motivated comments towards Asians and Asian Americans. Donating some money to a charity is not enough. If Miss Info made a song ridiculing the victims of 9-11 and made racial remarks towards African Americans over the air, do you think a justified reprimand would be for her to contribute one week's pay to the September 11th Fund/NAACP? I think not.

The conversation was crazy. Miss Jones didn't even allow Miss Info to talk. The most uncalled for act was that Miss Jones made the reference of Miss Info being superior because she was Asian. As a New Yorker and an Asian, who listens to Hot 97 often...they have been hit with too many things..aka. the Aaliyah incident..it just goes to show that even when popular..they do the most stupid things ever..at least 105.1 plays music and doesn't have arguments played on the air.

Posted by: Jennifer at January 24, 2005 11:41 PM

Someone articulate needs to call in the radio station's morning show and SAY THIS ON-AIR. They have people calling in regularly to "GET FUNKY" (bitch and complain about shit that pisses them off). With all these undercover letters being sent, we need someone well-spoken to call up and be HEARD ON THE AIR.

no?

Posted by: CALL IN TO THE SHOW! at January 24, 2005 11:43 PM

SIMPLY PUT THIS IS WRONG!

Posted by: ratmany at January 24, 2005 11:49 PM

This is just another dumb thing in the long list of dumb things done by Hot 97 DJ's. Not only did they slur ( Asians ) but they also demeaned Africans. However I would like to point out a few contradictions; when the N-word is used on Hot 97 and other stations, the outcry is far less. Hip-Hop has united this generation, but there are still a few gaps. The arbitrary use of the N-word, the slur or choice, by ALL racial groups, has led many people to believe that they can say anything without impunity. When I hear Latinos ( my mother is dominican, my father is African-American ) and Asians saying " what's up n***er!", or " yeah, I called that n***er last night", it makes me wonder if they would be alright if Blacks walked up to each other and said, " what's up sp*c " or " that's my ch**k "?
Do not let the lyrics of rap songs fool you, a racial slur is a racial slur, no matter WHO uses it. I am for free speech ( I thought the whole Janet Jackson thing was a joke ), and believe you should be able to parody just about anything, but you have to take into account at whose expense the joke is being made. Hip-Hop music has always talked about the things everyone else was scared to talk about; which brought light to many issues that had been overlooked. If Opie and Anthony had done the same type of thing about the killings in Rwanda, Blacks would have raised hell. Racial tensions still exist, and all the rap songs in the world won't change that, but rap music, music in general, helps to start dialogue, which is what we need most right now.

Posted by: Dave at January 24, 2005 11:53 PM

FUCK hot 97. that used to be my favorite station. but fuck it. no wonder why the great radio personalities left it and moved onto to better things. too bad they hired dumb bitches like jones cuz they're going to lose their listeners as well. guess they just werent aware how many "chinks" support their show. too bad.
i was offended at how they called asians "chinks" and africans just "africans." i mean if you're going to make racist remarks, why not be fair and call all races names. but it's not even the racism that horrific. it was the FACT that they were making fun of the tsunami tragedy. how can you make light of something as tragic as 200,000+ deaths? OUTRAGEOUS!

Posted by: bo at January 25, 2005 12:34 AM

I don't listen to this station often, but I am offended. How dare they use that term. Chink is a racial slur. There is no way around that. How would they like it if someone made a "funny" song about black people and used the word nigger in the place of africans or black people? Would Miss Jones feel offended or superior in this case? I hope Miss Jones will be taken off the air because it is NEVER okay to use the word "chink" when referring to a person and it is NEVER okay to use the word "nigger" when referring to a person. The other real offense is that she accussed Miss Info of feeling superior because she's asian. WTF does that mean? I'm pretty sure Miss Info felt insulted and offended by the song, as I do because I'm Asian.

Posted by: Susan at January 25, 2005 12:50 AM

I'M GONNA START CALLIN MY BLACK FRIENDS CHINKS UNTIL THEY STOP CALLIN ME NIGGER! YOU SHOULD TOO! TAKE A STAND! WE'RE NOT NIGGERS!

Posted by: bo at January 25, 2005 12:51 AM

So many people lost their lives and they can't have the decency to just keep their traps shut. And to make it worse they make it into a joke. How can anyone make light of such a horrible situation?

And on the use of the word "chink" ...
I would think that people of color would have better judgement and sensitivity when it comes to issues of race.

Posted by: felicity at January 25, 2005 01:00 AM

Yes, I am asian, however this is not why I am outraged. This was a skit that made fun of the whole tsunami thing. Please understand that they not only used racial slurs (which I don't mind) but made fun of dead children.

Remember there were Africans who also died from the Tsunami, so there should be equally pissed off African Americans regarding this skit.

Posted by: JOhnny at January 25, 2005 01:04 AM

I know we are all outraged and asking to have these peoples heads. I have a better idea. Why does the station and the parent company need a public outrage to do something about this? Shouldnt they have had the decency to do something about this without this public outcry?!?!?! They fucked up. They should have been the first ones to do say and do something. I say fuck them all... Lets really punish these companies by never listening to HOT 97 EVER AGAIN and never have anything to do with anything their parent company owns! Lets hurt them in the pocket books as much as we can! These companies dont care about us! They just care about making money and im sure that their efforts in dealing with this matter is only an effort to protect their interests!!!!

ok guys stop with posting racist comments of your own.

to those who think that the racial slurs was the biggest insult, that's just the tip of the iceberg. associating every asian that died in the disaster as chinese is insulting to those who died. if i were a malaysian man who was injured and was referred to as a "screaming chink" i'd be real pissed. aside from that, you had todd lynn make a threat on a LIVE BROADCAST heard by tons of people. even if he was joking, a threat like that has to be taken seriously when you broadcast it to the media. "i'm going to shoot all asians" is a threat which the police should address. if he was serious, then there's an obvious problem. if he wasnt serious then there's an even bigger problem as he thinks telling everyone that he's going to start shooting asians is a joke. so make of that what you will but there's more than one problem with this situation. just keep that in mind before anyone says that the racial slurs was all to be considered.

Posted by: danktrees at January 25, 2005 01:35 AM

Mc Donald's has replied with yet another weak response, please continue sending e-mails to let them know you will not be consuming their products until a more appropriate action is taken:

Thank you for taking the time to contact McDonald's and share your feelings about our commercial placements. We appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns.

First and foremost, please know that the relationship we have with our customers is one we value greatly. Our customers are at the heart of every decision we make, and we would never do anything to intentionally offend any of our customers.

When it comes to determining where we advertise, we have an obligation to our customers, employees, franchisees, and shareholders to reach our customers as effectively as possible. To that end, we work hard to have an ongoing dialog with all the media outlets with which we work. We regularly review programming where our advertising messages appear, and strive to associate our messages with programming that is relevant and entertaining and that speaks to our customers in positive environments.

That said, it's important to understand that McDonald's is not directly involved with network programming decisions. As an advertiser, our role is not to determine what broadcasters should or should not air. That decision belongs to the broadcaster and, ultimately, to the individual viewer. Whenever we have the opportunity, we talk about the core values of McDonald's that make our brand what it is today.

Please be assured that we will continue to search for entertaining, responsible programming for the placement of our commercials. Again, thank you for contacting McDonald's.

Posted by: tc at January 25, 2005 08:18 AM

You can see in their 4th paragraph that they try to free themselves from the social responsibility, saying they don't take part in the programmming and they're just advertisers. Then in the last paragraph they say they'll search for entertaining and responsible programning??? So in their minds, the tsunami parody is entertaining, fucked up shitss

I heard 95.5's (lame) morning show this morning. (My fiancée's alarm clock is set to WPLJ.) And although I cannot stand the "wacky zan-a-riffic *honk honk* 'humour'" they do, I had a moment of pause when they mentioned the Ms. Jones debacle. The gist of their opinion: The idea that management didn't know about this song...after they played it for four days straight...is nonsense. And, in so many words, they said that the racists involved should be fired.

I think all the pressure we're putting on advertisers, the FCC, and local government is working. We really need to keep it up.

And, really, if you feel the need to go racist on these people, please don't bother. You're just as bad as they are. Think proactively, take a breath, and write well. Sounding like a raving loon won't do the effort any good.

Just my observations and my $0.02.

yo man wtf they gotta do that
how bout we make a song about em
with alot of racial slurs
and put it on the radio saying
we gonna shoot whatever the
hell they are and give a lame
apology

Posted by: kevin at January 25, 2005 09:50 AM

James, I was already aware of this statement at the time I emailed you. An apology is appropriate when someone says something offensive. It is hardly sufficient when somone specifically incites racial violence (Todd Lynn: "I'm going to start shooting Asians"). You say Sprint monitors the content it sponsors, but you have not decided to pull adverstising from this station. In effect, Sprint has condoned it by continuing to support that station. The DJs repeatedly, over several days, played this song and refused repeated requests to stop until they got the maximum publicity out of it. This was a publicity stunt and Sprint is attempting to profit off the publicity of racial hatred. If you think appropriate action was taken, I have to question whether the message of the Tsunami song really "runs contrary" to Sprint's committment to diversity.

Respectfully but disgusted,
Michael.

Posted by: Michael at January 25, 2005 10:39 AM

There's no question that miss jones should be fired. Until the station takes such or equivalent action, I'll not advise any more of my clients to advertise on any of Emmis Communication properties.

Posted by: Ronald at January 25, 2005 10:43 AM

well, if we get jones fired, is there a way that we can prevent her from being hired on power 105? maybe we all should email/cc: them too and tell them how disgusted we are with her. (just in case --- star is now on its morning show..)

Posted by: C at January 25, 2005 11:33 AM

I've called Hot97 and all the sponsors. I've been calling everyone that I can get my hands on, and I can tell that they are getting annoyed (probably b/c everyone else is calling them). Do what you can, call people and let them know this is bullshit.

Posted by: Pete at January 25, 2005 11:34 AM

That's what happens when there's a pussy ass race like the Asians. Lets face it, those niggers at hot 97 had no problem dissing those monkey gooks because are not scared of any mongoloid getting them in the garage, they know they are pussy but were dumb enough to think they would get off easily. While those dumb gooks think, "oh all black people are cool, they were teh slaves and the white man this that", and then they suckle on their dicks *bluarg* *bluargh* *whyyyy*, but then they get dissed about their ethnicnity like ms info got dissed and they get all sensitive. Please, you stupid hypocrites. All of you are scared of niggers so shut up, go listen to their rap and rnb crap and wish you were black or had black cocks in your mouth if you are some kind of pacific islander like a jap, who gives a shit what some fat big clitoris nigger bitch has to say? They are shit anyway and should be considered as such. Stop the bullshit already and grow some balls.

WE ALL ARE BEHIND MJ KELLY!!!!

PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN WHERE AT LEAST I KNOW I'M FREE. AND I WON'T FORGET THE MEN WHO DIED WHO GAVE THAT RIGHT TO US.....

Janet Jackson exposed a nibble and the world when crazy over it, at the expense of the network and the FCC imposing a fine to the network. and that was funny...When is the FCC going to step up and impose a fine for this humiliation that these uneducated individuals caused the USA, we are now living in a world of communism, therefore, we all as Americans need to watch what we do and say in public for it can be costly... so terminating the staffs involved would not be suffice. Freedom of speech can only be practice in the privacy of our homes. The consequences that should be impose on EMMIS Communications are to have them pay the fine with, an addition contribution to the Tsunami relief funds. As well as having Ms Jones and Todd Lynn terminate for using poor judgment and keeping them from ever picking up another microphone.

And we as Americans need to step up and take action hit them where it hurts the most, in the pockets and have the advertising companies take action as well. Because losing hundreds of families in matter of hours is no laughing matter, especially, the day after Christmas.

WHAT THE HELL WAS THESE TWO IDIOTS THINKING ABOUT!!!! BETTER YET THEY WERE NOT THINKING AND THAT IS OBVIOUS...

We all as Americans will be paying for this in the long run, so let Ms Jones and Todd Lynn paid as well, because a week salary is not and will not take care of this mess they have created.

We should not rest till this issue is dealt with several consequences and have these individuals remove, this is not the first time they have use derogating racial slur.

Let's get the advertising agency attention, even if we have to boycott them.

I did'nt even hear this song until I woke up this morning and heard it on channel 4, in California.

I know songwriters must have the right to express thier views, but this is disgusting to disrespect a country that has had a devasting event as this. I would definitely sign the petition if someone can tell me what website it is on.

As for Ms. Jones I think she ignant in ebonics that means ignorant and not having respect or a conscience for anyone but herself. Ms. Info I am proud of you for standing up for what you believe in and your heritage. I am black myself but I would never degrade any other race what would happen if we were in a country and we needed the help, would we tell on white people or purple people could help us,not asians or anyone else that isn't your favorite color.

97.7 Get a life and what goes around will come around and bite you in the As.....

May god have mercy on you.

Posted by: Green at January 25, 2005 01:50 PM

Why in the song did they refer to the Somalis as African, and the various Asian people as "Chinamen" and "chinks"? Nice double standard, you fucking racist assholes.

Posted by: angrylady at January 25, 2005 02:00 PM

Hi,
I am a tourist on holiday from the UK, the station and its staff seems to find the death of thousands of men, women and children funny.
I can only say that I hope and earnestly pray that they to suffer the pain felt by those, like me, who have lost family in this disaster, I now truly regret feeling any compassion for the USA and New York after the bombing of the two towers.

To Miss Jones, may all your hopes and dreams fail, May all your family and friends die a painful death as you seem to take joy in such events. I can only voice my disgust and pray your soul finds understanding from your god, who is obviously not the same as mine. After hearing this trash, I can now understand why people hate americans.

Posted by: Andy at January 25, 2005 02:04 PM

Hey Andy - Stuff it Mate. Some jackasses on the radio and you "truly regret feeling compassion?" You lost family there, and NY/ America/ the World feels for you, just like they felt for us when those towers came down pretty much in my backyard. Save the anti-American rant. You know better than to think these people remotely reflect any of the rest of the populations' views. The only thing I have in common with the mental midgets behind those microphones is that we're all part of the same species (I really hesitate to use the phrase "all human beings"; they barely qualify for that).

Posted by: Jfn at January 25, 2005 02:23 PM

Andy: Why would you regret feeling compassion for USA and NYC after the twin towers? So you would judge all of America by HOT 97? That's as ignorant as judging an entire race because of one stupidass person's actions.

Posted by: Julia K. at January 25, 2005 02:35 PM

Free speech. This is why the country has gone to shit ... because people like you find it necessary to censor everything. Fuck you if you don't like it, boycott them or turn it off. There's nothing anywhere that says you can't say what they did. Is it wrong? Absolutely, but should they not be allowed to say it? No. I for one won't be listening to them, but fuck the fcc as well.

Posted by: stop bitching at January 25, 2005 02:53 PM

Why won't people post up their names and e-mail addresses? Why do you people who have something negative or stupid to say, why are you hiding?

Posted by: Julia K. at January 25, 2005 03:12 PM

By the way, to "stop bitching," don't even act like you're speaking on behalf of HOT 97. Defending HOT 97 is so hypocritical. So if free speech is what this world's about and HOT 97 knows this, then why did Jones get so angry over the Aaliyah satire?

Posted by: Julia K. at January 25, 2005 03:18 PM

Let's not get out of hand people. I too, totally disagree with Miss Jones and the morning show, but lets not categorized every black person alive in that category. I am black and I believe there are ignorant people in all races so lets just categorize them as being ignorant and they just happen to be black. For all the Asians that posted racist remarks about black people you are being hypocrites and you too are just as ignorant as her and her show.

Posted by: Hannah at January 25, 2005 04:29 PM

Hot 97 should be shut down for good. I saw we all boycott the stadium. I am from India and I find this highly offensive. The FCC should regulate on this. and take them fuckers off of the radio.

Posted by: Kunal Patel at January 25, 2005 04:29 PM

all, look who runs the radio station, hell, all radio stations, they aren't black, they aren't asian... but they are pitting asians against blacks and vice versa... and they are laughing at us all the way to the bank, all the way to the board room, and all the way into office... while minorities sit here bickering at each other... yeah miss jones is a dumb racist, but she's just a pawn... don't become one yourself...

i am not one to condone racism or the mockery of the dead, but it's so true that if the tables were turned, you betcha jones would e the head of a boycott right now. disgraceful.

Posted by: anonymous at January 25, 2005 05:31 PM

I just listened to a clip of the preceeding conversation and the song and I must say that I am horrified.
I mean, what happened to a little DECENCY.. I'm not asking for compassion.. tears.. even sympathy. But, I mean.. COME ON. It's amazing to me how ignorant and senseless people can act.
It's ironic how this radio station is in New York, and I'm pretty much 100% guaranteeing everyone that these people were all up in arms when the WTC was attacked. How is this any different from that?
You know this country has just gone to shit when this happens. I feel so ashamed that my fellow Americans conduct themselves in this manner.. and this is coming from a teenager. How sad.

Posted by: Jackie at January 25, 2005 05:40 PM

This is absolutely ridiculous. Just because Asians are supposed to be the "quiet" and "subservient" race, racist ignorant people feel that they can make light of a enormous global tragedy. If this happened to people in Africa and the song referenced the word "negro" or variation thereof, African Americans would be up in arms over how they have been oppressed and prejudiced against. But an African American being a racist against Asians is supposed to be okay? If any person was intelligent they would know that Asian Americans have suffered in this country as bad and even more recently than African Americans (e.g. the Japanese American internment camps during WWII). We as Asian Americans don't cry and bitch about the injustices done to us every second that we get and we don't blame our situation on the biggotry that we have faced. We don't carry that excuse with us everywhere we go. We have let it go and have moved on with our lives. But now when I hear someone from a race that always cries racism, but is a blatent racist themselves, I cannot let it go and turn the other cheek. If this goes unpunished, it says a lot about our Country and our values. HOT 97 should find every single Asian and tsunami victim that they have offended and apologize personally. This is absolutely ridiculous.

Posted by: E-Nak at January 25, 2005 05:42 PM

that bitch & station got the nerve to now want to donate. after hearing that, i dont think they want your chum change...let me go on air and talk about miss jones mother that died from cancer then afterwards ill contribute my 4 weeks pay to cancer...yah bitch..

Posted by: kalvin at January 25, 2005 06:07 PM

It's amazing that racism can still exist so vocally even in New York city in the year 2005. This is not the first time HOT 97 has made racial slurs against Asians. There were previous incidents where they laughed like hyenas over the Asian accent. Unfortunately we haven't had a Rev. Al Sharpton representing our community. Hopefully this incident sends a clear message that racism against ANY ethnic group cannot be tolerated.

And one thing I learned from emailing HOT 97's sponsors? Sprint possesses absolutely NO moral obligations and their unethical practices should be made public. (boycott Sprint as well!) By the way, this is a reply I got from what appears to be a more conscionable company:

------
Dear Sir/Madam:

We respect and share in your concerns regarding the truly insensitive
and inappropriate behavior of the show's hosts and the airing of the
offensive song. Please be aware that Jackson Hewitt Tax Service does
not endorse or approve of such behavior and had no input or prior
knowledge as to the content of the broadcast that aired last week during
the "Miss Jones in the Morning" program. In fact, we have already
contacted station owners and management to express our concerns and to
inform them that we have withdrawn our advertising and support from the
"Miss Jones in the Morning" program. We acknowledge that the station has
posted an apology, but certainly do not believe that that is enough,
considering the serious nature of this matter. Thus we have called upon
the station's owners and management to further review this program and
its allowance of such behavior.

We thank you for taking the time to reach out to us on this serious
matter.

Respectfully,
Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc. Management

Posted by: tiltues at January 25, 2005 06:50 PM

Can anyone try to put up a more complete version of sponsors of HOT97 station or its parents company, Emmis Broadcasting? It will be even better with those sponsoring company’s media contact person’s name and number and email.

We should act together to hit them hard by contacting their sponsors and filing a complaint to FCC.

I think the bottom line is:
1.“Miss Jones in the Morning” show must be shut down.
2.Involved person (including DJs, hosts, and behind stage personnel) MUST be HIRED.
3.We don’t accept the apology made by HOT 97 on 1/21/05 on their website.

We just have to tell those companies’ media person that we don’t like to see their ad on air in HOT97 if our demand is not fulfilled.

We can file a complaint to FCC. There is the address:
Federal Communications Commission
Enforcement Bureau
Investigations and Hearings Division
445 12th St., SW, Room 3-B443
Washington, DC 20554
Email: fccinfo@fcc.gov

Can anyone post some nicely written drafts for FCC complain and for the sponsor companies? For the FCC draft, it must have the day and time of the offensive material was aired.

Posted by: beatHOT97 at January 25, 2005 06:54 PM

PLEASE post most HOT97's commercial sponsor's contact info. Let's call them, and tell them to pull the ad untill the problem is fixed.

Posted by: beatHOT97 at January 25, 2005 06:59 PM

This is what I wrote to all the sponsors, taking a cue from a posting above. I would suggest also that you blanket email all your friends and colleagues to reach a wider audience.

I urge you all to do the same, including boycotting their products and spreading the word until such time that appropriate action has been taken by the sponsors, like Jackson Hewitt Tax Service has. (see above)

-----

Dear Sponsors of Hot 97,

I am utterly appalled and disgusted by the blatant racist, inhumane, and callous sentiments displayed in the "Tsunami Song" and aired on Hot97 and Emmis Communications. I find it absolutely disgraceful, disheartening, and beyond offensive.

I cannot pretend to understand their intent - be it some form of irreverance, low-brow humor, or expression of "grief" and "empathy." The Tsunami song is only superseded as the most disgusting thing I've heard on air by the appalling attack on Miss Info by Miss Jones for voicing her disapproval of the racism of the song. The song and the heated exchange between Miss Jones and Miss Info was the most blatant and disgusting display of their bankrupt humanity.

I support freedom of speech, but I will not tolerate racism or such cultural or human insensitivity. I do so by voicing my opinions and carefully selecting where I spend my money.

As professionals in the media as well as private corporations advertising and supporting the media, you all have a responsibility to the public to raise awareness, disseminate information, and yes, at times to provoke. But this is a social responsibility -- i.e. an ethical and moral responsibility, which you have flaunted away precariously and discarded disdainfully with this piece.

Sponsors, I urge you to disassociate your companies and your image with such blatant racism, disgraceful and inhumane characters by discontinuing all advertising contracts and other business relationships with Hot97 and its parent company Emmis Communications. Until then, I will work tirelessly to not just spread the word but encourage a grassroots boycott of your company and products.

I urge you also to reflect these bold actions by including them in your corporate responsibility reports and profile. Don't brush them under the rug like Hot97, Emmis, or even some amongst you, are trying to do. Take a stand and be a leader among the media and peer corporations.

This is how you can show your leadership and support - not for a handful of idiots with no sense of decency or sympathy - but for the friends, families and countries that lost over 160,000 people in one day and to make America a country who do not mock the destitute but help them overcome this horrific tragedy and the challenges that lie ahead.

I hope you will do the right thing.

Thank you for your time, ----

HOT97 is pathetic. I liked listening to them years now, but ever since Star and Buckwild did the whole charade thing about Aaliya, why should I condone such disgrace and disrespectful acts? And now this "Tsunami Song"? Do these DJs really think it's amusing to hear that kind of racist, utterly disgusting skits on radio? WTF. Miss Jones and associates should really get fired.

If violence against ignorant, uneducated, racist people are legal, you bet I'll be the first one to throw rocks them.

Posted by: Ed at January 25, 2005 10:21 PM

We must maintain our persistence and unite against bigotry. Doing nothing is committing a crime of silence against ourselves and our future generations. If only a few have united in the past, then let us come together as strong as ever. As much as we can't expect hate to instantly disappear, we can still make sure that we are heard. Being heard is a stepping stone. Without that stepping stone, then there will never be a precedence for inspiration. We are all proud people no matter what values and cultures we are brought up with. When another person attacks us with utter disrespect, we must all take a stand and make sure all avenues of repercussions are exercised. I refuse to settle for an insignificant status, as I presume anyone else would feel the same way. Stand up and do something for yourself, or you will regret it. We are all a someone-that-matters.

It is a sad day for humans when we no longer respect the value of human life. Clearly you do not, using the loss of human lives as a cheap way to get ratings and listeners. It's a shame that such a strong representative of the hip hop community in NY is reduced to poking fun at and diminishing the devation, tragedy and untold loss suffered by those in Southeast Asia. I am not only outraged as an Asian American, but also as a human being, that you would even consider airing such an inappropriate song. Rest assured people are becomng aware and we will raise our voice. Changes can come from the power of many but only when the many come together to that which is invincible...the power of one.

I was wondering if anyone has contacted the ACLU/NYCLU or the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition in regards to this matter. Both organizations should be willing to lend their support. According to the organization's website: "The National Rainbow/PUSH Coalition (RPC) is a multiracial, multi-issue, international membership organization founded by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. We're working to move the nation and the world toward social, racial and economic justice. From our national headquarters in Chicago and a bureau in Washington, D.C., we're uniting people of diverse ethnic, religious, economic and political backgrounds to make America's promise of 'liberty and justice for all' a reality." I'm rather interested in what Rev. Jesse L. Jackson would have to say about all this.

Good idea nana. I've sent emails to major news organizations like NY Times, CNN News, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and the Oprah Network. I was looking into sending something to the local chapter of NAACP in Manhattan, but the website link wasn't working. I'll check more tomorrow. Keep pushing and don't let the issue die.

hah i agree with swdf...how would they feel about someone making a song about white people dying in a tragic event? why would they even THINK of making such a song? and put so much effort into it! what's wrong with their MINDS to come up with such a thing...

I feel Miss Jones and her crew should go down to the Tsunami and pay a visit and then see what song she'd be playing. People there are in such pain inside and out that it's unexplainable. Perhaps if you guys go and hold a baby that has no family or console a mother that has lost her child, you'll not take a song so lightly. Shame on you. A week's wages donated is a slap on the wrist.

what i wrote to emmis:
Dear managers:
As a radio professional, I hate to see it when one of our companies is in trouble. So, I think you should know the unfortunate circumstances in which I found your email addresses:
I went to google, and searched under "Hot 97" +racist +shoot.
The first term described the station that will now live in the most negative of spotlights...the station that will always search for hip hop fame, but will only find evil infamy.
The second term, as you know in broadcasting, is a label that automatically blemishes whatever person or group it's assigned to describe.
The third term describes what one of your on-air talents said he would do to a class of people, which amounts to genocide.
And result #1 of the google search yielded your emails.
This went beyond the belittling of a disaster. Now, Emmis will unfairly or perhaps fairly be lumped-in with the worst of racist bodies, from the KKK to the Third Reich.
If we...meaning we radio people...are to survive in this century, we must leave behind the attitudes of the last century.

How can you make such a horrible song about the tsunami victims . . . They suffered enough they don't need your bs. I hope you sleep at night knowing that you make fun of suffering people that had there homes destroyed and everything taken away from them.

Posted by: Jenny at January 26, 2005 01:36 AM

Posted by: Tony at January 26, 2005 01:59 AM

I applaud the action taken by all of you respecting this matter. As an African-American myself, I duly appologize for the stupidity and amoral character of these people--if they can even be called as such. Their lack of common sense and human decency in creating such a song makes mockery of so many things, the least of which are Asian-Americans, African-Americans, and the original "We are the World" song.

Miss Jone's and flunkies' justification for the song itself is so ridiculous that even a child could understand why it's unjustifiable. She, and flunkies, did not make mocking songs of Tupac Shakur, Christopher Wallace, Freaky Tah, Alliyah, "Left Eye" Lopez, Jam Master Jay, and Big Pun's deaths. So why make a mockery of a still rising number of deaths, throughout the world respecting this tragedy? It must have not registered in her idiotic mind that entire families were wiped out, along with complete generations of people, due too the tragedy.

Nothing less than a complete dismissal of the staff involved in this travesty of our "freedom of speech," as Americans, is warranted. Donating a weeks' salary pay isn't enough along with false apologies. I filled both petitions and an official complaint with the FCC. Hopefully this situation will be resolved in an appropriate manner, with either Hot 97 being shut down or the Morning Crew (except Miss Info) being removed from their jobs. However, I'd prefer both.

This is to them

You are the type of people that give Americans a bad
name. How can you sit there and shit all over these
people after what we as Americans went through with
9/11. How can anyone approve the actions of these
low-life, ignorant, money hungry people. How can the
heads of the radio station sit there and continue the
support of this horrible broadcast. Miss Jones and the
rest of the voices on this tape deserve nothing but
pink slips. Americans and the world know what
happened. People all over the world are doing their
best to support the tragedy, but of course "if it
doesn't happen to us it doesn't matter".With people on
the air like Miss Jones and her crew just encourage
hatred, racism, and passes on destructive messages to
the world that all Americans weather black, white ,
Hispanic, Asian whatever feel the same way. Freedom of
speech is beautiful and its our right but to sit
their and poke fun at a tragic natural disaster is
just ugly. I consider you now as terrorist of the
airways by making Tsunami victims and the poor
children the butt of your stupid little song. My Love
for hip-hop music is no longer with hot97. This is not
Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop is bringing all races together in the
enjoyment of the same music and lifestyle. No hip-hop
head young or old would approve this kind of action.
NOT even a stupid apology can help. I'm not Asian but
I found it disgusting and I'm not going to wait until
something happens to my people so you can point and
laugh. This is real life. Don't worry this will spread
throughout my University. Us educated Americans are
proud of our flag, our troops, and will give any
support the Tsunami victims need. Miss Info should be
applauded for standing up and representing. She should
get her own show. Miss Info, keep representing U are
truly a classy women for not taking part. To the rest
..Thanks for disgracing our country and Hip-HOP.. We
don't want you and We don't need you. Miss Jones is
wack, How dare you say god is laughing. Your jokes

more of a bad name..This is one more listener tuning

I cannot believe the management of HOT 97 would allow this crude song to be aired for a second. Not only should the morning show be fired but the entire management staff should be replaced. Over 200,000 thousand people DEAD and you make fun of it. I hope that God has mercy on your souls for being uncaring and not thinking about your actions. We all make mistakes but this is one mistake where action will speak much much louder then a simple apology. This radio station has let down alot of people and I HOPE the hip hop community ban together to boycott HOT 97 until this morning show is gone.

I don't know why anyone is really surprised. Quite frankly, blacks are by-far the most racist group of people in the United States. Everything is always about race, whether it's politics, religion, economics, community, or even natural disasters. Racism in America is not directed at blacks, but rather originates from the black community.

King, the link here (http://www.asianmediawatch.net/missjones/audio/hot97_wqht_extended.wma) is still working.

Funkonaut, I find it hard to agree that racism in America originates from the black community. The policy of creating Japanese prison camps in the U.S. circa WWII was based solely on the assumption that anyone of Japanese descent was a potential traitorous spy and should be interned. The President signed it ('it' being Executive Order 9066) and the Supreme Court defended it (Hirabayashi v. United States (1943)). There has been no black U.S. President, and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was probably only an adolescent back then. The 'White Man's Burden' justification of imperialism, colonialism, and slavery can be considered more of an origin to racism in America than the 'black community'.

Nevertheless, in the case of this "Tsunami Song", I see an ugly marriage of humor and hostility that stands as an embarassing contribution to humankind. This may be apples and oranges (and a bit of a stretch to say that Artest was 'defending' himself), but if Ron Artest was suspended for a season without pay for defending himself against belligerent fans, then the creators of the "Tsunami Song" should be banned from radio until they undergo extensive sensitivity-training-based community service. A criminal deserves a chance to reform; the word 'criminal' used here because the creation and singing of this song is essentially a hate crime.

new suspension statement is out.

here's the link: http://www.hot97.com/

Statement from WQHT-FM, HOT 97

New York City - Miss Jones and the HOT 97 Morning team have been indefinitely suspended for the airing of a song that made light of a catastrophic event, as well as comments made at the time the song was aired.

Earlier this week, Miss Jones said on the air "I apologize to all who have been offended by my poor decision to go along with playing that insulting (to say the least) Tsunami song. I should have known better and I didn't. So I'm sorry and hopefully we can move forward from this, or I can move forward from this being a better hostess, because I am better than that, and I know better than that -- and you deserve better radio than that."

While Miss Jones has apologized on the air, in the media and on the HOT 97 website, station management felt that stronger action was necessary to demonstrate the severity of the situation.

Emmis Radio and HOT 97 will not tolerate such derogatory and racially insensitive content. This incident in no way reflects the spirit of HOT 97. The station has a long-time and well-known reputation for community involvement and support.

Emmis Radio President Rick Cummings said, "What happened is morally and socially indefensible. All involved, myself included, are ashamed and deeply sorry. I know the members of the morning show are truly contrite. They know their actions here are inexcusable."
We would like to clarify that no company advertising on our station had any connection to the Tsunami Song and no company advertising on our station endorsed or sponsored the offensive material aired on the "Miss Jones in the Morning" show. We apologize for any misunderstanding that may have caused listeners to believe that anyone, other than the morning show staff, was responsible for the material that should not have been aired.

Posted by: angela at January 26, 2005 03:37 PM

Listen. Enough of this Jones shit. She's a racist, as well as many people in this country. That is reality.
Many African Americans, Jones included, have a resentment towards Asians because Asians, in general, have a higher socio-economic status than they do.
Although many Asian Americans, especially of the Chinese descent, had ancestors who worked as "coolies," aka slaves, this part of American history does not get nearly as big a spotlight in the history pages. Dumbasses like Jones obviously didn't go to school the day this was taught because she was probably busy cutting class, blowing some guy for crack money, or getting drunk.
Blacks view Asians as easy target due to the belief that Asians in general do not fight back.
It is refreshing to see that the Asian voice is growing increasing louder and more powerful.
Anyway, Jones will be terminated. Hot 97 will be financially reprimanded. Tha Asian voice are growing increasingly louder/powerful. That is reality.
Unfortunately, it'll only make people like Jones resent the more "successful" minorities even more. If they would only get off their monkey asses and strive to succeed themselves by staying in school and working hard.
Regarding the insensitive nature of the song towards the 200,000+ lives lost, no comment needed. We all know this was wrong.
Let this be a small lesson to the insensitive reverse racists out there.

Posted by: Suc mi cojones at January 26, 2005 03:55 PM

I just called the station. I can tell you they just don't get it or don't care or both. Anyway that was the perception of the person that answered the call. You think they would at least apologized for what ocurred. The number can be found on the station's web site under general info. No apology there. What they are trying to do now is smooth it over with the advertisers. Apparently it work for McDonalds, an e mail from McDonalds posted on another site states McDonald adds will only be pulled from the morning show. Which probably means McDonalds will be spending the same amount with the station as it always has but just airing their commericals at different times.

Good job Sprint - who pulled all adds from the station.

I thought Miss Info was really cool and level-headed under the circumstances. She said that she supported their right to freedom of speech and that they could say whatever they wanted, but she was offended and didn't want any part of it. She took a lot of garbage, but she held her ground. She should chuck these racist creeps at Cold 97 and do her gig at VH1.

Is there an e-mail address for Miss Info where we can send our messages of support? She should not have to give up a week's pay for what these other jerks did. I'm sure she'd be happy to make a donation to help the victims, but she should be allowed to do it on her own terms.

Sincere thanks to HipHopMusic for taking the lead and doing what is right here. I've emailed EVERYONE listed here AND filed complaints with the FCC and NYPD Hate Task Force. I'll continue to do so until Tarsha Jones and Allen Todd Lynn publicly denounce their acts of hate OR the show is cancelled permanently. While we will probably never eradicate racist, offensive behavior by individuals, we CAN band together to stop corporations from profiting from hate. I'm so honored to be amongst you who feel the same.

Posted by: Genny at January 26, 2005 04:51 PM

There needs to be some sort of action which will bar the morning show crew especially Miss Jones from doing similar shows on this station in the future or on any other stations. People tend to forget things like this easily. And I think that's why the show is only suspended. I am hoping the FCC will step up to the plate and hand down some disciplinary action so that this type of on-air behavior will not be repeated anywhere in the future. (note that someone said that Miss Jones was fired for similar conduct at her previous job; and obviously she was able to get this job).

Has anyone sent the story to any foreign media, like the BBC news? I think more attention and coverage is needed in order to make a difference.

Posted by: Julia at January 26, 2005 05:41 PM

I sent an email to the FCC and got a reply that upsets me very much.

"Thanks for contacting the FCC. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.

Due to the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and federal law, the
Commission generally does not have the authority to regulate the content
of broadcast programming. Any authority the Commission has in this area
typically would stem from the broad language of Title III of the
Communications Act which empowers and requires the Commission to ensure
that broadcast stations serve the public interest. In addition, the few
rules we have concerning the content of broadcast programming have been
tied to an explicit and unambiguous statement in federal legislation.
For example, federal laws authorize the Commission to prohibit the
broadcast of programming that qualifies as "obscene" and to restrict
"indecent" programming on broadcast stations. In addition, the
Children's Television Act of 1990 requires that broadcast television
licensees and cable operators limit the amount of commercial material
shown during programming specifically designed for children and another
federal law prohibits broadcast stations and cable television systems
from advertising certain tobacco products. The Commission has issued
rules implementing these laws.

Except as noted above, the Commission does not have the authority to
require that broadcast licensees include or exclude specific content in
their programming. In addition, the Commission does not have the
authority to prevent a broadcast licensee from airing viewpoints that
may be unpopular, offensive, stereotypical, or critical of a particular
characteristic such as religion, race, national origin, or gender.
Rather, such programming decisions are made by the broadcast station and
are not approved or reviewed by the government.

Finally, you may wish to contact the station in writing regarding this
matter. Pursuant to Commission regulations, broadcasters must maintain
letters of complaint in the station's local public inspection file and
make the file available to individuals who may wish to comment on the
station's license renewal application.

I hope that this information is helpful."

It doesn't help, it just doesn't help at all.

There was a line in the play Raisin in the Sun........

Where's the bottom?

How far down the drain are we willing to go. When I heard the song and conversation between Ms. Info & the other "chick" (she is not even worth naming), I was disgusted. Not only was the song tasteless, but the conversation that followed was totally unprofession.

That "chick" must think that she is still in the projects. As a Black woman I was embarrassed and ashamed as that "chick" personified every negative sterotype about us.

Mad props to Ms Info for standing her gound. A healthy person stands alone. She was alone last week, but now the world has her back!

Anything less than the firing of that "chick" and the others who participated in and approved that song, is a farce.

THIS IS WHY THE WORLD HATES US!

Posted by: Venus at January 26, 2005 06:16 PM

before you read what i have to say, understand that i am so disgusted by what Miss Jones has perpetrated.

that being said, i just wanted to say that going to the FCC is, well, unamerican. we have a right to freedom of speech, so the government cannot get involved (unless there is cursing and such).

fortunately, however, we have the power to hit them where it really hurts: their wallet. they rely on advertisers to keep their business going and their advertisers rely on us to make their ads cost-effective.

let's focus on the advertisers and not on silencing the idiots -- lest one day we ourselves are silenced.

one other thing that bothers me is that for anyone who isn't black to say the "N-word" today is worse than saying the "F-word" simply because it is racist. the incredible double-standard that exists has never been so apparent as when a black woman uses derrogatory words like the "Ch-word" Miss Jackass used many times.

we found it very interesting to find in a previous posting that this is not an isolated incident but Miss Ignorance has had a history of racism towards asians. she should therefore be blacklisted from working at any broadcasting facility in any capacity -- again because of pressure from advertisers. she might want to get some "sensitivity training" too, if she wants to function outside of her tiny little world.

also, miss info should probably not be penalized for the actions that she quasi-vehemently protested against. they should put her on and dump Miss Ignorance.

finally, the hip hop community doesn't need any MORE bad press, so these racists have dealt a huge blow to the very rappers they support by playing on their station. i would hope some of the rappers with integrity will come forward and voice their disgust with us.

PLEASE ORGANIZE A PROTEST -- WE WILL BE THERE.
we suggest starting a mailing list for this purpose. if you need a listserv, let us know.

Posted by: EVERYBODY BURNS at January 26, 2005 06:50 PM

In this day and age it is easy to point a finger and say that because Miss Jones is black that she is making black people look bad. Miss Jones is making racist, ignorant, disrespectful people look bad, and that's nothing new. What she said was disgusting and I for one and horrified. That being said, it is not a reflection on her race or even on her community. It is merely a reflection on her.

Posted by: chelsea at January 26, 2005 06:53 PM

Oh, boohoo. Bitch Jones gave up one week's pay. All that means is that she'll have to give up the Twinkies and KFC for a week.

People like her are a huge reason why so many non-blacks think so LOWLY of blacks. If you ever wonder why people hate blacks, think of Miss Jones. That fat, gap-toothed, stupid, racist, ugly ho is a perfectly understandable explanation for anti-black hatred. REMEMBER that.

Posted by: Kate at January 26, 2005 06:56 PM

How big of you Kate to just go off on Blacks and generalize them just as Miss Jones did w/Asians. Good job stooping down to her level. i have a feeling you are white or asian like me which is the main reason she has these ideas that all asians are like this. Grow up

The bottom line is, this should not be viewed simply as a conflict between races.

Unfortunately, that was what those DJs were hoping for. However, IF THIS WAS JUST ABOUT RACE, THEY WOULD 'WIN'.

They would have gotten the publicity that they wanted. Why do you think these DJs threw in the words chink and chinaman? Just to upset Asians and elicit a response - so that they could sit back and laugh. With their 'audience'.

But guess what. Some of us ain't dumb. ;)

We won't give you the response that you were hoping for.

Instead, we'll contact each and every sponsor that you have. The media picked up the story, locally, nationally, and internationally. So now, the WORLD knows how ignorant those DJs are.

This is disgusting, and I am glad to see your vigilance on this matter.

I can't believe this came from a radio station based in one of the world's most diverse cities.

It's funny that Popeye's hasn't pulled their ads, as the song offended Indonesians, many of whom are Muslim. In Toronto at least, all Popeye's offer halal meat and virtually depend on Muslims to compete against KFC. They should boycott the franchise.

Asians, whether East or South, have been offended and marginalized in North American media for too long. We should learn a lesson from Blacks (not the ones who made this spot) and Jews and come together when our communities are threatened. Big up the webmaster here!

It's easy to get worked up when something first happens, but we Americans have a very short memory. I wonder how many of us will be listening to Hot 97 next week or Miss Jones when she makes the comeback. I stopped listening to Hot 97 years ago, for something not nearly as disgusting as this incident, and I swore I'd never listen to them, and I don't, not even in these last few days. I'll be sure to be back here in a month to see what's going on. Jay, please don't stop giving us updates. I will definitely be listening to your station and will even have it on when I'm not home!

As an African American, I'm embarrassed that the NAACP, Urban League and many African American politicians are silent on this issue and have not made a public statement denouncing the stations actions. I've emailed as many as I can think to email. I suggest you all do the same if you have not yet done so!

Posted by: AFRO-NYC at January 26, 2005 10:09 PM

To Stephanie who posted "what about the racism that still exist in our own backyards how about helping with our own countries needs, with the overwhelming poverty that exits. grow the fuck up and fight to help your own."

Where the fuck do you think the racism "in our own backyards" comes from? It starts with bullshit media like Miss Jones and her racist crew influencing young, naive listeners. Is Miss Jones completely at fault? No, but she's one in a million examples of how the media impacts people's views. Also, the fact that one of the shows hosts said "I'm gonna start shootin' Asians" is even more disconcerting. That kind of language incites violence and is not protected by the freedom of speech. Were that a white radio host or dj saying "I'm gonna start hanging Niggers" you better believe you and the NAACP would have been down Hot 97's throats. It's not just a joke or something to take lightly. The battle starts at the ground level. You gotta stop racism at every turn not just the huge injustices but yes, even the seemingly small ones like this tsunami song. Goddammit, I am not a chink. I am a loving husband, a performer, a writer, a weekend athlete, a son, a brother, a cousin, an uncle...I am not gonna be reduced to a goddam slur like "chink." I am so much more than a racist slur and so are the victims of the tsunami and so are the former listeners of Hot 97. So fuck Miss Jones and Hot 97 and their bullshit paid leave. They need to be fired.

Miss Jones and staff (the dumb fuckers that wrote the tsunamt song) that is ridiculous. There are some things that yyou just not joke around with..trying to get a little laugh. See if you were a real comedian like you claim to be you would not have had to take something so seriuos and personall to so many people and turn it into a so called joke. And in the songs yall talk about child being sold to slavery...well miss jones your dark midnight should be the last one joking about slavery since your people came from it. And tell me what is funny about kids losing there mother and working their asses off to die by the age of 15 if they make that. If you have a kid or niece nephew...know any young person would you be ok with that happening to them. And HOT 97 i have lost all respect for your station..how dare yall allow that to be played...and then have the nerves to deduct a weeks pay from miss jones compared to all the lives that are being lost by the tragedy. MISS JONES ASS NEEDS TO BE FIRED!!! and she need to change her name..cause miss is a sign of respect and her ignorant ugly black ass deserves no respect at all. Jones you should listen to the songs that your station plays... Alicia Keys: " what goes around comes around what goes up must come down now who crying ..." Its called Karma, bitch. Jones you are a dis grace to all black people Miss Info, you did right seperateing your self from igmorance, keep standing up for yourself and continue to seperate your self. Because if you have worte a song about niggas and the KKK, Jones would have be beating the piss out of you. Jin keep doing your thing and i my prayers go out to your people in their time of need and may God bless them.

To sum up what i just said...Jones(formly Miss Jones, name change due to lack of respect she desrves), the dumb ass holes at Hot 97decided that jones wound have leave with pay insted of being fired like she needs to be, the proucer that record this was ass track, and anyone who laughed...you can go fuck yourselves, you ignorant ass dumb ass mother fuckers...P.S. karma is a bitch

i'd have to say that the advertisers are not truely at fault. yes, they have been sponsoring the show, hence the tsunami song. however, many companies do not bother to "look into" the programs of which are being ran. because it is a business matter, all it is is a routine advertisement for the business. i will have to say that the announcement of the sprint sponsorship was unintentional, rather a regulatory sponsored message. however, i must comend them for suspending their supports to hot97. it honestly shows how much they really care about the people. as for me, i am all the way on the west coast in california and we do not put up with this kind of behavior. the ones who are clearly at fault are the people who created the show, who runs the show. with "a weeks pay donated to the victims", that is absolutely nothing compared to the deaths of many and on top of that the mourning of thousands of more. i honestly don't think the majority of the family and friends of the victims have even heard of this song yet. their voice counts the most. we need to know what they have to say about Miss Jones' Morning Show on Hot97. coming from socal, i'm out.

Its always interesting to watch 'western' people get all upset about 1. humor and 2. racism. I've lived and worked in Asia for nearly 20 years, speak an Asian language, been married to an Asian, studied the religions etc.

Ignoring the obvious errors in the show (e.g. that China was not affected by the wave) the issue of racism in Asia has almost been completely ignored by the western world and indeed (I'm going to annoy some people here) typically only people with white skin are given the label racist.

If you have lived here then you would know that anything you may have seen, heard or imagined in your safe, imaginary world of the good old US of A doesn't even come close to the 'racism' applied to those of different skin colors and nationalities in most places in Asia.

Before the majority of you start to get all huffy consider the following example. If I marry someone in my current country of residence she loses the right to own a house, buy land and a number of other rights that she should have as a citizen of the country, just because she married a foreigner. If the same tape had have been played here or many other places in this region about some tragedy that happened in a western world the announcers would probably have received a promotion or at the very least an unofficial "well done, nice show." So it is a matter of perspective.

Of course it was a tragedy, one of the biggest the world has seen for a long time and I feel sadness for all those affected. At the same time should people be able to express any opinion they like in any way they like? Of course they should that is what "freedom of expression means" and from what I have seen the so called free nations have lost many of those basic rights by deciding what is "politically correct to express and what is not" while at the same time having those that are the supposed targets (and the ones being 'ptotected') in many cases laughing at them behind their backs because now "the weakness of stupid white foreigners can be taken advantage of" sic.

I copied this from a poster from an Asian website, and he's got a great point. Basically, we should pressure FCC to investigate this more so than contacting the sponsors. Hell, just do everything you can but do the FCC complaint first. Then to Emmis... Then to Sponsors...Then to the media... The whole damn planet should be informed so that further racial attacks by the media will discontinue. He wrote the following:

CALL THE FCC and file a complaint. Filing the complaints can start up an investigation and a revocation of FCC radio licenses from Ms. Jones and the joining party of that song. Of course, the radio station and the parent company can get slapped fines. But the biggest payoff would be national and possible international recognition when and if the FCC gets involved.

Posted by: Kelly at January 27, 2005 01:27 AM

FCC is pointless - it's called the right to free speech.

It's up to the sponsors to see if they agree with what these people are saying

Just in case anyone forgot ..

"..Go find your mommy. I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head. And now your children will be sold into child slavery."

"a wave 20 feet high came and washed your whole
country away. And all at once, you can hear the
screaming ... And no one was saved from the
wave."

"You can hear God laughing, 'Swim you b*tches
swim.'"

Even when you take out the chink, chinaman, bitches, etc. The disregard for these people's suffering is unacceptable.

The tsunami relief effort is still going on right now, at this very moment. It struck one month ago.

If that doesn't upset you, you have some serious issues.

"Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective."
- M.L. King, Jr.

This issue is about basic human dignity.

I think that was outranged. I suppose we should try them as racist as well as terrorist in court with legal actions. And the fines will be all donate to help the tsunami victims.

Cuz, I see blacks suing whites for racial profiles and won a lot of $. I suppose the tsunami victims can have some use of the fines.

This might be strong, but I say fuck that radio station. They said they were sorry and going to pay 2 weeks of earning to the tsunami victims. I say that is not much different than throwing pennies to beggers.

Who they think they are?

However, the most outranged thing was that I read that the D.J. bursted his words on-air that he should start shooting asians. I don't see the different between them and the terrorist who had done in 9/11.

Dear readers, who you think that is guiltier? Those who promotes the killing or those commit the killing? I don't know about your answer. But I am sure that I have no doubt about that.

Lastly, to President Bush:
You had promised to fight and to eliminate terrorisms. You had sent your troops to delibrate other countries. And now, I think you should clean up your country. We are watching your actions and thinking about your words.

I think the best way to bring down Jones is to contact as many INTERNATIONAL news/press agencies. USA has regarded itself as the leader of the world, yet, when the tsunami tradey happened, US goverment denoted the little sum of money was mocked badly by the international communities. President Bush only acted up like a TRUE world-leader when the secretary of UN critized US being stingy. It seems to me US government won't other countries' things too seriously unless they might damage its own self benefit or image. In this case, make this incident heard globally...maybe US goverment and FCC will start acting strongly when some other countries start calling "US is not only stingy but also heartless."

I believe the federal authorities should get involved in this because of two points:
1) Racial Discrimination
2) Supporting terrorism.

It is my understanding that the host said something to the effect "shoot" or "kill" Asians.

In addition, we need to tell the supporters that they will be boycotted in the event they don't discontinue their financial support for Hot 97. We can't sleep on this issue.

Todd Lynn is an ugly fat wannabe comedian, I can't stand him.
Aside to the Tsunami song, he kept making fun of mentally retarded people on air. If you're racist, you're racist. I don't care. But to promote it in public? If I had one bullet, I'll put right into his head.
Miss Jones is bitter as fuck coz her mother died of cancer and her music career didn't pop and she's fat. That must be funny to her, coz she certainly can make fun of other people and their family dying and make fun of people who are working really hard to reach thier goals. I hope people find it funny when she is dying a horrible death. I'm sure she can.

Apparently, this Senator feels it's okay for a station to suspend but not terminate racists who work for them, and is too lazy to do anything about it. Please call him and tell him to get off his butt and write to the FCC and speak out.
His number is 212-486-4430. The racism shouldn't be suspended it needs to be terminated.

Thank you for contacting The Coca-Cola Company. We are grateful for
the opportunity to respond, and we share your concerns regarding this
matter.

Together with our bottling partners, The Coca-Cola Company is working
in the regions impacted by this natural disaster to provide clean
drinking water and to support local relief efforts and other on-the-ground
needs. To date, the Coca-Cola System and our employees have combined to
contribute almost $20 million in cash and material donations.

We have made Hot 97 management aware that The Coca-Cola Company does
not condone the inappropriate and insensitive parody of the tsunami
disaster that aired on their station. We do not support programs that are
discriminatory or that make light of the tsunami crisis and its
devastating impact on people in the region. Accordingly, we have withdrawn our
advertising from the Hot 97 morning show.

However, we do not want this decision to impinge upon other ongoing
community support programs. Currently we are conducting a Black History
Month promotion in conjunction with Hot 97 that awards scholarships to
deserving students in the New York area. While this worthwhile
promotion will continue, it will no longer be advertised on the station's
morning programming.

Your feedback is truly appreciated. If you ever have any additional
questions or concerns on any other matter, please feel free to contact us
again.

Members of the African-American community are protesting, too!

Here's the letter I sent to Hot 97, Emmis, and the FCC today...

note: the Hot97 morning show e-mail addy, as well as the advertising one and main one for Emmis must be getting bombed, as my e-mail bounced right back due to full mailbox... so it's working, y'all!!!!

Keep up the good work!

----
I am writing to express my complete disgust and anger at the complete disregard for the loss of human life that Miss Jones and her morning show co-hosts displayed on Hot 97, your radio station.

On one note, as an African-American, I find it sad that members of our community did not support other people of color in a time of tragedy, and that supervisors and owners of the station felt it was acceptable for Miss Jones and her fellow on-air personalities to make such hate-filled and racist comments.

On the other hand, it's sad that Hot 97 is continuing its trend of
dispicable morning show "shock jock" tactics... debasing other human beings' tragic situations for ratings is a tactic that must come to an end.

Please note that I will be contacting each of your major sponsors to request that they pull their ads from Emmis and Hot 97. (Please note: the list of sponsors is already going around the internet, and I plan to forward it to each and every person in my private and professional address book.) I applaud McDonalds, Sprint and Jackson Hewitt for doing so already.

Additionally, I have CC:ed both Michael Powell and Kathleen Abernathy at the FCC. I will also take the time to write them personal e-mails as well.

Finally, Hot 97's weak apology and standard issue "suspensions" (NB: we remember the Star and BucWild "suspensions," thank you very much...way to milk the controversial ratings!) have made it so easy for me to make the switch to your competitor stations.

I tune in to hear the music, not hate-filled rhetoric and slander.

Today is World Holocaust Remembrance Day, and it should be recognized that the attitude of Miss Jones and her cohorts at Hot97 toward other races and their complete and utter disregard toward the sanctity of human life and human dignity marches in goose stepping jack booted parallel to Hitler and the Third Reich in their genocidal treatment of 12 million men, women, and children. It is exactly the kind of "banality of evil" exhibited by Jones and Lynn that created the Holocaust.

Posted by: Howard at January 27, 2005 03:38 PM

I'm glad that people representing other ethnicities are joining together in concert against this issue. I truly believe this goes beyond racism against Asians. It's about racism and prejudice altogether, no matter who is at the recieving end of it.

I have never thought myself as superior, just because I'm Asian. To say that is to suggest that our people's pride borders on the basic principles of Nazism. Even though, Miss Jones, should remember that thousands of years ago, it was my ancestors that perfected the paper that she probably wrote this disgusting song from. And invented the gunpowder in the bullets that Todd Lynn would "shoot Asians" with. The dam nerve of that racist bastard.

I doubt very much that the founding fathers of this country intended for the basic rights of its citizens be abused in such grotesque fashion. I don't think the brave men and women who have defended, and is defending this nation and the symbolism of the American flag, are doing it to protect the ignorance of these sad pigs. It's a sad way to start the new year. In 2005, given the struggles that all minority classes have undergone, that we still have to witness a racial tirade like this. This is not a NY issue, this is not even only a Chinese issue. Trust me, when they are saying "chinks" they intend it to mean every other Asian person out there. That includes the Koreans, Taiwanese, Japanese...etc. They can't very much tell the difference, and you have to realize they won't bother to make the differentiation either. It's obvious that Miss Jones and her sidekicks lack the intelligence and morality to do the right thing. In my opinion, she doesn't deserve to ever speak over an open mic ever again. I just can't fathom what was going on in that room, when they put this ridiculous song together. Did nobody have the decency to suggest that there might be something wrong with it? She should be fired and take up another career, maybe producing more songs out of other people's pains, griefs and tragedies. She can start with 9/11, or those brave troops in Iraqs and the families they've left behind, or children born with AIDs, the people dying of cancer. Since its practically no holds bar for her. No topic is off limits to her. She finds comic value in everything sick and perverse.

I work in the same building at Hot97. I can't wait to see the turnout and the events that happen tomorrow. There is obviously something wrong with the morality of this station, and its management if nothing is done to properly "fix" this situation. Over 220,000 people dead, over a billion people offended, and all they have to show for that is a half ass apology. Miss Jones, wanting to "put this behind" her. Yeah right.

My letter to the sponsors:

To Sir/Madam

I am writing in response to the racial and derogatory musical piece played on the morning show on NYC radio station WQHT-FM, by DJ Miss Jones. I understand that I have one voice, and it might not hurt your earnings very much if I alone boycott your products, but I am part of a community, a community that is voicing their outrage loud and strong. I don't see how it can possibly benefit the image of your company by aligning yourself with these individuals who promote hate, malice, and such lack of compassion for fellow humanity. Believe me, I am taking precious time out of my day to write this letter, it is an issue near and dear to my heart. It is an issue that goes beyond me taking offense as an Asian-American. The founding fathers for this country did not lay down the bill of rights to be used and abused in fashion. The men and women in the armed forces risking their lives to protect what the American flag represents, is not doing it so that those ignorant and all associated with that radio station can go on a racial tirade.

As a member of this society, I believe your firm has the social obligation to protect the integrity of our founding beliefs. Please show your support against acts committed by Miss Jones and Hot97, by suspending current and future advertisements until proper disciplinary actions can be found.

screaming chinks. And no one was saved from the

"There were Africans drowning, little Chinamen swept away. You can hear God laughing, 'Swim you bitches swim.'"

Upset? It's because the mocking of these people's suffering is unacceptable.

The tsunami relief effort is still going on right now, at this very moment. It struck one month ago.

If that doesn't upset you, you have some serious issues.

"Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective."

This issue is about basic human dignity.

Companies that support the mocking of the victims of the tsunami include:

Cingular Wireless Does anyone have contact information for this company? I switched to Sprint and I want them to know why. Phoning customer service was pointless. On hold forever AND disconnected.

Support Sprint PCS. They pulled advertising from the radio station.

Switch your wireless carrier from Cingular or Verizon Wireless, etc. by calling (877) 851-1830.

An early termination fee may apply if you are still under contract with your current provider.

At the end of the transaction, tell them that you want to leave a comment, and thank them for taking a stand against the mockery of the tsunami victims. They will forward your comments to management.

Tell them about the song. I'm sure they will love the children searching for their mommies and the bit about child slavery:

No offence everybody. But acting like a bunch of children by swearing, cursing and calling these people names, doesn't really make you look credable at all. I'll agree, however, that the song is just another example of how society is nothing than a giant waste stupidity and catch phrases, and didn't even deserve 2 seconds of my hearing. A curse on you and your houses.

It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true."

-Martin Luther King Jr.

How can anyone actually defend the song that makes fun of the people who were destroyed by the tsunami?

Just because the color of their skin is different? I don't understand.

I would imagine people supporting Miss Jones would have no right to be upset the next time someone who isn't black says something 'controversial'.

If people can't see the truth regarding this whole mess, everyone loses in the end. You cannot become a better person, or a better people, by putting others beneath you.

"God is not merely interested in the freedom of brown men, yellow men, red men and black men. He is interested in the freedom of the whole human race."

But according to those behind the tsunami song, he was laughing as people drowned.

Again, I don't understand.

While the actions taken now to reprimand the staff of "Miss Jones in the Morning" appear appropriate at first glance, I do not think her stated apology demonstrates that she understands the full, hurtful impact of her actions nor show deep enough remorse. Therefore, I would recommend more severe penalties.

First, her misjudgment was hateful, mis-guided, and pre-meditated (as demonstrated by her adamant defense to colleagues prior to playing the song).

Then, her apology statements to "move forward" and "I'm better than that" indicate a self-centeredness ignorant of the hurt she has generated to friends and families impacted by the tragedy, to entire nations of people trying to rebuild their lives, and to everyone who has a child and shutters at the thought of child slavery.

People who cannot fully understand the impact of their words and actions on others cannot fully repent. People who do not fully repent should not be forgiven. Those not forgiven on highly offensive actions should be fired, or at least removed from highly visible "leadership" posts.

I was so angry upon hearing the extended tsunami song that I was unable to sleep until 5 or so in the morning. The words of Ms. Jones reflect the ignorance of a woman who has absolutely no business being on the air.

For those who haven't, I urge you all to sign the petitions and email the companies. I felt somewhat dumb emailing Hot 97's sponsors at first, but I figure if each one of us does it, the annoyance alone of so much mail will make an impact. Take your outrage and do something positive with it.

Some can target the advertisers, while some of us target the investors. Investors will respond will the feel the stock price in EMMIS will decrease. So lets contact a lawyer to file a sue. There’s a lot of grounds for suing (even Todd claim to start killing Asians).

1) visit www.ragingbull.com and www.yahoo.com then enter “emms” (Emmis stock symbol) on their discussion board. That’s where most of the individual investors discuss the company.

(2) Here is a list of Emmis Communication (owner of Hot 97) top Shareholders and Investors:
Westport Asset Management Inc.
Eubel Brady & Suttman Asset Management, Inc.
Barclays Bank Plc
Mellon Bank, N.A.
Martin Capital Management LLC
Goldman Sachs Group Inc

(3) Somebody should contact a lawyer that’s willing to sue, then do a press release through prnewswire.com and business wire. Huge investors will act only when they see it will hurt the value of their investment.

(sorry if i have misspellings)didn't want to proofread
Hello everyone----i'm not that great of a writer as the first gentleman was.lol But anyway, i am from chicago and i'm a african american female. what people need to notice is that this is not all about race, this is about ignorance. Ignorance has no color and will take controll over what anyone will accept, live or decide on and can often lead to hate and murder. If i am plegged with ignorance and never want to escape my neiborhood to see or experiance the rest of the world, or exceed the boundaries that others have set for me, i may not accept diferent cultures or someone of a different race. Of course that's not fair to the rest of the world but this is the way america has made it. Not to be anti-american cause i love living the way i do, but if you can remember some of the things that you learned in school or from reading, the civilizations of america right after the indians were extremely brutal to people of another race, and different cultures. Most of that history is not learned in school or has vanished because it is so gorry(spelling?) and people are ashamed. The hurt, tears and anger that existed then is still here and it never left. I wonder, why do people act as though america is healed after all of the terrible things that happend a long time ago? Sure things have gotten better and we expect all americans to live up to it's new standards but the hate is still here. This is NOT about color(i want people to understand)Many people are still hurt and ashamed. Realize this, the americans whos family names have been here for centuries, are only decendants of the people that were part of a brutal history. What do we expect from nations of poeple that were brought up to still practice very old ignorant lifestyles in 2005. I know it's not fair but it's been like this for centures here. This may be off the subject a little but we need to look at the big picture, this problem is bigger than the hot97 song----these thoughts of ignorance are in lots of heads in america. The song only serfaced the problem for many people to recognize that "OH my goodness, it's still here and they actually had the gutts to play it on the radio."
For example, some of your friends or people you know that are of another race may even make ignorant comments about your culure behind your back, because of a learned ignorance from family upbringing and friends. Unfortunatly about Miss Jones being a black woman herself, she must be very mentally ill along with the other fella that recorded this with her, because she of all people she know how it feels to be discriminated against being black in america and living the hip hop culture, and so on. Look like she would hate racism, since black people have sufford greatly in america. But once again, ignorance has no specifications on color, so i don't want anyone to make this a "This nationality" thang ok? The cause of ignorance is simply from, not enough exposure, negetive opions that older family members give to their children or even friends. So what happends is other people follow the trend on "Let's hate these kinds of people." Tall, short, minorities, poor people etc......the list goes on. We need to work on changing these old ignorant thoughts starting with our children, and correcting it when ever we see or know someone who is practicing it.
That's when america will practice equality towards all races.

Posted by: chitown at January 28, 2005 03:04 PM

While you begin to make a point, you went well off track. Racism begins with acknowledging the fact that there are "major" differences. Start looking at people AS people instead of a "different" race.

Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.
We are sensitive to the opinions of our customers and apologize if a Toyota sponsorship has offended you in any way.

Toyota’s decision to advertise on particular programs is based on the level of interest generated by the American public, not the subject matter contained in the program. We make every effort to screen broadcasts considered to contain controversial issues, however we had no prior knowledge of the radio station's intent to air “The Tsunami Song”. Additionally, Toyota advertising stems from three distinct levels; local, regional, and national. This particular advertising was from a TDA (Toyota Dealers Association), which represents the greater New York Region.

Upon learning of this issue the TDA immediately contacted management at Hot 97 to express their dissatisfaction. As a result, Hot 97 responded with a written apology to the TDA. Our research of the Hot 97 controversy indicates the radio station has ceased the broadcast, issued a public apology, and offered a notable contribution to tsunami relief.

Toyota in no way condones nor supports the messages prevalent in the parody known as “The Tsunami Song”. To the contrary, we take many opportunities to promote cultural and racial diversity, and regarding the tragedy created by the natural disaster, Toyota estimates a nearly four million dollar contribution for tsunami relief efforts from its North American affiliates.

Your email has been documented at our National Headquarters under file #200501281161. If we can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact us.

I have just spent over an hour reading previous comments on this site. Before that I heard the "song" and the comments leading up to it. I am speaking as a standup comedian who has worked in NYC for the last 20 years. Verdict? Not funny. Sung very badly, and indefensible. The song had to be written performed, then aired for one reason only. Attention. Which of course equals listeners, which translates into $$$. We're in America folks, and money is at the root of everything that happens. The only way to rid the airwaves of crap is to stop listening. When that happens, advertisers will not put money into the show. Doesn't matter whose show it is. I don't listen to the radio, morning shows in particualar because I don't find it funny. I've worked with Todd Lynn in NYC comedy clubs and was surprised to learn of his involvement in something as bad as this. Though I don't know him well, one thing I picked up about him is his desire to be famous. This just goes to show you what people will do for notoriety. It's the same reason people go the reality TV show route and embarass themselves. After money, fame is what Americans want most. To quote another Stevie Wonder song, heaven help us all.

As if Hot 97 in NYC doesn't already have enough problems explaining away the recent faux pas, you ought to check out the following part of their website under "The Lifestyle" titled "Ask the White Girl."
http://www.hot97.com/advice/home.aspx

The following link is presumably for the first entries when the thing first started
http://www.hot97.com/advice/index.aspx?c=37&pn=15

I doubt very seriously that a C&W Station's website in Nashville, for example, could get away with a similar one titled something along the lines of "Ask the 'Hood Playa'" if you get my drift. What's really irritating is that this subliminal form of racism further reinforces stereotypes about who does and doesn't listen to certain types of music. I can assure you that this kind of crap such as what HOT 97 has done on the air as well as at their website would never fly here in San Antonio. We've had a local Hip Hop and R&B station here in SAT (owned by the Hispanic Univision, as a matter of fact) for a little over 4 years now that, as I understand it, has been one of the top FM stations overall. Although they occasionally may do some things that skate close to the edge, for the most part they've been pretty decent, and they for sure haven't done the kind of race-baiting stereotyping that HOT 97 is apparently into

Humored,

The highest number death tolls went to Indonesians (by far statistic reported 173,981 confirmed death casualties in this country) as to Indo was off the epicenter of that magnitude earthquake in decade which sparked disastrous Tsunami tidal wave, whereas Sri Lanka is the second hard hit area with 38,195 deaths, and 10,744 deaths Indians. Such information is NOT hard-pressed to find almost on any public media. But on this part you are right that China was not struck by last Asian Tsunami.

As for Ms. Jones and her accomplices, probably a kind of redemption will be appropiate to make amends for public, broadly in the name of the earth inhibitants. Well, I suggest you to put all your money of a week salary back onto your mouth.Lemme put across the suitable detention/redemption for your case : Get your ass over the affected areas. Contribute some what-so-called valuable time of your live as a volunteer in helping relief workers disposing those THOUSANDS rotten corpses, yet you still have to clean up that awful debris and pull those cadavers out. Spend some couple months in this humanitarian effort, betcha my 5 cent (Sorry,I won't stake any higher for an idiot like you Ms. WTF) that is gonna do your shape good.
Wait, it doesn't stop here! You also MUST circulate clean water, food, medication, and other staple daily needs for those in great loss staying in refugee emergency camps. (let's see how much you can deal with that heavy duty). Also foster those millions children whose parents life were taken away in that horrible catasthrope, ironically, whom you made fun of. Those suffering ones had nothing left with them but the only clothes they wore on the day of mother nature tragedy, to say the least- but mentally shock of experiencing untold, unprecendented horror which seized away numbers of dear ones to them at a time is unthinkable and just beyond words can express. I can HARDLY understand your mindset capable of producing such heartless, repellent, tasteless, grotesque mockery song slipped through your uncivilized mouths. Matter of fact, you called it a JOKE or maybe a risque in your own opinion (?)which makes you even look much uglier in society. I don't give a damn what your color is, you individually and cronies are big time anomalies and gaffes bursting in your guffaws worse than horse does. I wonder, how you bring up your kids? do you ram most of moral degrading, demeaning attitude down into your children? If so,that is very sad.
I've read your apology statement at Hot97 website, it didn't indicate any deep regret, not even a bit. You are too adamant, unfortunately ill-read,and self-righteous to admit blunder you've kicked up. I have my doubt if self-correction applies in your term.

Hey Ms.WTF (jones) and cronies, what about me singing this following song composed by the late Freddie M for ya:

Is you conscience allright?
Does it plague you at nights?
Do you feel good?
--
You're just a hot air balloon
So no one gives you a damn
you're just overgrown shcoolboys
---
A dog with disease, you're the Queen of the Sleaze
---
You never had a heart of your own (you never did)
Should be put inside
you're a sewer rat decaying in a cesspool pride
Should be made unemployed,
make yourself null and void,

Hint Hint....all complaints to their station wether written in pen, printed from your computer, or emailed must be kept on file with the radio station there. If you write them and a week later go into their studio and ask for proof of that letter....if it does not exist in their files(meaning they threw the letter out)....the station can be heavily fined by the FCC....as if they won't be fined already for broadcasting racism.

I would suggest to anyone angered by this email them or personaly write them a letter and keep a copy for yourself as well.

The broadcast in question: "The Tsunami Song"

Date aired: Morning of January 21st 2005 (multiple airings)

Station call letters: WQHT-New York (Hot 97)

Offending DJs: Miss Jones and Todd Lynn

Offending lyrics:

---------------------------------------

There was a time, when the sun was shining bright

So I went down to the beach to catch me a tan

Then the next thing I knew, a wave 20 feet high

Came and washed your whole country away

And all at once, you can hear the screaming chinks

And no one was saved from the wave

There were Africans drowning, little Chinamen swept away

You can hear God laughing, 'Swim you bitches swim.'

[Chorus]

So now you're screwed, it's the tsunami,

You better run and kiss your ass away, go find your mommy

I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head

And now your children will be sold to child slavery

No matter what race or nationalities your are from. They went ahead and pissed off everybody. Well karma is a bitch and it will catch you Miss Jones... In my culturl when a person died of a painful death their ghost will roam the earth for three year. So I hope those 200,000 victim from the tsunami visit you in your dream and haunt you Miss Jones. nuff said

If that is not the most ignorant, inconsiderate idea/song/performance on air.....Normally I am a very silly person who don't take things too seriously, but this stunt was waaaaaayyy overboard. Not hardly funny. It's actually disheartening and sad. This shows the true character of a person when they can even think of something so ignorant, so racist, so insensitive......EVERYONE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MAKING OF THIS SONG, THE AIRING OF THIS SONG OR THE IDEA OF THE SONG SHOULD BE FIRED!!!! IF THEY ARE NOT FIRED, IT SHOWS THE TRUE CHARACTER OF THE STATION!!!!!!

On behalf of African American people anywhere, I just to apologize. I find this situation disturbing, as most African Americans and people in general. I have a show on www.artistfirst.com each sunday 11pm - midnight est. and I have openly discussed this situation and my horror in regards to the behavior of everyone at that station less Miss Info. I think Miss Jones should be replaced immediately. as far as the advertisers, well I think they should continue to handle business with the station but only if miss jones is removed permanently.

Posted by: Kalico Jones at February 1, 2005 06:19 PM

Yeah, I havent actually heard the song but i did hear about it on the news.
The discusted that comes to mind is unbarable.
What were you thinking? how would u like to be upon those thousands of innocent people that died because of this. Or maybe a family member that cant bear the news of hearing about all of this. How would you feel if you were a little 4 year old boy or girl and you were stuck in this horrific act of mother nature and couldnt find any of your family no matter were u looked and now your lieing up in some hospital bed or all alone at a homeless camp not realizing what went on, on that horrible day.
People in america really have the nerve by putting something like this out. It is horrific, terrible and just plan wrong.. I hope the writer and producer of this song is kicking themselves in the ass cuz of this.
No body deserves to be made fun of. Especailly intire nations. It wasn't there problem that it happened. If something happened like this to your nation, you know the whole world would do the same thing. But what if someone produced a song about it? how would u feel then?
I hope, who ever wrote this song, produced this song, had the nerve to put it on the air of hot 97, all gets whats really coming to them.
Do you all have no heart at all?

Posted by: Kim from Ottawa, Canada at February 1, 2005 07:23 PM

well Todd lynn and the producer have been fired. But VN, Info and Jones will be back. Funny right? Since NV did some much work int he song, as well as Jones.

While there is no place under the sun for what has been done, I do want to draw to your attentions to the fact that not asian people were mocked but africans as well. To respond to people who say that "how would you feel if they made this song about your race?" Well the last time I checked Africa was predominatly black- populated and aint no one said anything since. The problem is that everyone just wants it better for their own and once they get it, that is all. Isn't that in itself hypocritic and dare I challenge your minds and say 'racist'. This is not how it should be. If you are going to criticise the song (like everyone of us signing this petition are doing), then criticize THE SONG and not what the song says about asians or africans. I can bet my life on it; once apologies are given for the asian- targetted racist remarks, this case would phase out. A person, a firm did this. Not a RACE. Just like Hitler and his ideologies committed genocide not a race. Direct your anger wisely!

I'm just as concerned about hearing advertisements for tobacco-owned companies like Kraft and Nabisco. Tobacco products kill 5,000,000 people around the world every year. Nobody should take the tobacco people's tainted product advertising!

Regarding The Tsunami Song, Miss Jones, Todd Lynn, and Hot 97 and their misconducts on air

ONE OF THE MOST RACIST EVENT IN AMERICAN SOIL TO HIT ASIANS AMERICANS:
AN ASIAN MASS MOVEMENT

Some Background Information on the event:

On 1/21/05, Hot 97, New York's number one hip hop station, which reaches millions of listeners worldwide, played a song titled the "Tsunami Song" on "Miss Jones in the Morning" radio show. The song
contained offensive, derogatory, and very racial comments targeted towards Tsunami victims and Asians in general. It was not just the song, but also the interview featuring Miss Jones (real name Tasha Nicole Jones), Todd Lynn, and Miss Info. However Miss Info was not a participant in the racial discussion. She was verbally attacked by Miss Jones and Todd Lynn for defending it from being on the air. Todd Lynn, and I quote from the interview said "Imma start shootin' asians" at 3:38 seconds on the audio clip. Funny thing is, no one in the whole staff besides Miss Info spoke out to prevent this song from being played. The song was continuosly played for four days.

Some Lyrics in the song:

- "All at once you could hear the screaming ch*nks and no one was safe
from the wave there were africans drowning, little chinamen swept away
you could hear god laughing, `swim you b*tches swim`"
- "So now you`re screwed, it`s the Tsunami, you better run or kiss
your *bleep* away, go find your mommy, I just saw her float by, a tree
went through her head, and now the children will be sold to child
slavery..."

"Just prior to the broadcasting of this inflammatory and extremely distasteful audio, the airwaves erupted into hostility when the popular morning show`s hosts argued about playing the "Tsunami Song." The on-air quarrel started when Miss Info...openly voiced that she had no involvement with either the production or publication of the song, as she personally found the views expressed in the song offensive. The show`s other two co-hosts Miss Jones and Todd Lynn then launched into an abusive tirade against Miss Info for her lack of co-operation. At one point, Todd Lynn stated that he was going to start shooting Asians
while Miss Jones told Info she`s only complaining because "you feel superior, probably because you`re Asian." (courtesy of a member on www.asianavenue.com)

Now, To say that a Major Communication such as Emmis Communication can allow such a weak screening process to let Miss Tasha Nicole Jones, and Todd Lynn become radio hosts, is to degrate all of
the higher powers that run the communication conglomerate. http://www.emmis.com/ This is what a person first sees on Emmis Communications website

"a diversified media company with radio broadcasting, television
broadcasting, and magazine publishing operations -
is known as much for its corporate culture as for its leadership
position within the media industry..."

A diversified media company. I do not think the actions of Miss Tasha Jones and Todd Lynn represents the Emmis Corp. A little background on Emiss Communications Emmis Communications radiates a lot of energy in the broadcasting spectrum. The company owns (partially or fully) and operates about 25 radio stations serving several top markets in the US, including New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. (Courtesy of Yahoo Finance).

I am a communication designer and I understand the in's and out's of media corporations, broadcasting companies, etc. And this act by Miss Jones and Todd Lynn is definitely OUT! Now If I was to go on the air at another radio station, and say what Todd Lynn said ("Imma start shootin' asians" ) towards african americans, caucasians, or any other ethnicity, I would have the NAACP, Black Liberation, and all activists and human rights group trying put me in jail. I think the radio station Hot 97 is not doing nearly enough to bring justice to the asian americans. In our history books, we have been taught in school about hatred, racism against blacks, jews, japanese, chinese. In today's society, I would think that all of that is in the past. But to hear this Tsunami Song on the Air live & the remarks of Miss Jones and Todd Lynn to "advertise the song" and push the song to get on the air, I believe with all my heart, there is still racism, hatred and ethnical boundries. Do not believe that asian americans will "sweep this under the rug" or shrug it off. We are no longer passive and quiet, but we are uniting to make our voices heard. Together, we form the biggest population in the world, are amongst the elite in education, and the most ambitious entrepeneurs. There is an online petition to push this movement forward, and to bring justice to not only asian americans now, but to everyone that is fighting against hatred, and racism. In today's news, we hear a lot about President Bush fighting for the world's freedom, why can't we put this much effort into fighting our own racism and hatred? If these actions do not receive an applicable consequence, then the people who are responsible for the actions & damage control are showing the children of the next generation, that we continue to promote racism. If no satisfactual actions are taken, these letters will continue all the way to congress's doorsteps. We no longer want to be pushed around, shoved under the carpet, or spit upon. Not only does this promote hatred towards asian americans, but this promoted hatred against africanamerican, hispanic, caucasians, filipinos, and other ethnic groups. Thank you for your time. I hope if anything, you will gain the fact from reading this that hatred and racism is still out there, and is in today's mainstream media. For everyone who is trying to be apart of this movement, or voice their opinions, please do not reply to Emmis, Hot97, or other media groups with anger or vengence, but respond with insightful andcarefully thoughtout reasoning for it is the best way to communicate our message. I do not believe that Hot 97 is fully responsible for this incident, but as one listens to the interview, it is easy to identify that Miss Jones and her colleague Todd Lynn have strongly chosen to air this song on their own will. Most importantly, it is about the Tsunami victims. The world is coming together, every nation, every non profit group, from hollywood celebrities, to your average neighbor is coming together to help these victims. And for Miss Jones and Todd Lynn to demoralize the efforts of the Red Cross, and the people who are helping these victims back on their feet, is a slap in the face to the world! Thanks Hot 97 for degrating the whole tragedy.

Hot 97 and Emiss Communications reply a very weak apology not only to Asians, but also to radio listeners world wide:

http://www.hot97.com/

Something has to be done, and done right now. Please sign this petition and stop racism and hate in America. An online petition (very easy to sign) to repay justice to those who were hurt in Miss Jones/ Todd Lynn's idiotic act:

Posted by: evilryu530 at February 2, 2005 10:33 PM

I am thinking that this whole ordeal was planned from the beginning by the producer Rick De Gado? was this planned by him and Todd Lynn and Miss Jones so they can get publicity? because now the whole US knows who they are and who hot97 and Emmis communication is. So was this kind of "marketing" planned?!?! because you guys know that this was the fastest way to get advertising. Even though it was wrong and immorally defiant. Now My Rick De Gado and Todd Lynn's stocks are probably worth double because now they are notorious and will probably get a better job that pays 2 times more now because they are popular through misconduct? More needs to be done to them.

Sri Lankans Protest at evil Hot 97 Tsunami Song

Sri Lankans all over the world have joined with the Sri Lankan Community in New York in denouncing the cruel and racist Tsunami Song by Miss Jones and Todd Lynn aired over Hot 97, the hip hop radio station in New York.

Miss Jones who was only given a temporary suspension by Richard Cummings, President of Emmis Radio, is to get her job back in two weeks time. US President George Bush has been urged to take action against Emmis Radio. Cummings has been asked to visit Indonesia and Sri Lanka and see the devastation for himself.

The news of Hot 97's racist tsunami song is filtering through to the tsunami hit countries of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Thailand, South India. People are incensed at the song which goes beyond human decency. The governments of the tsunami hit region have been urged to take the matter up with the US Government as it insults the deaths of so many tsunami victims. Sri Lanka has lost over 40,000 people in the tsunami according to the latest count.

Sri Lankans have joined in the demonstrations in New York supported by New York City Councillors.

Here are the lyrics:

TSUNAMI SONG

Date aired: Morning of January 18TH-27TH 2005 (multiple airings)
Station call letters: WQHT-New York (Hot 97)
Offending DJs: Miss Jones and Todd Lynn
Offending lyrics:

“There was a time, when the sun was shining bright
So I went down to the beach to catch me a tan
Then the next thing I knew
A wave 20 feet high came and wash your country away
And all at once, you can hear the screaming chinks.
And then no one was save from the wave.
There was Africans drowning, little Chinaman swept away
You can heard god laughing, swim you bitches swim.

So now you're screwed, it's the tsunami,
You better run and kiss your ass awake, go find your mommy
I just saw her float by, a tree right through her head.
And now your children will be sold in child slavery.

(Imitating Micheal Jackson)
"Oh on, please not the kids. I'll pay for all the kids.
all the little Indonesian kid, the little Asian kids, the Chinese kids.
the black, oh well, not the Black kids.
the White kids, the Puerto Rican kids.
I love them all. I'll pay for everything.
I promise I won't touch them."

Sri Lankans all over the world wishing to protest are requested to write to their local American Embassy and to -

I've been at the emailing thing for a week now. Got most of my friends to do the same. They are as outraged as I am. But isn't it funny how Miss Jones is coming back. I was taking a look at Hot97 website. I still saw sponsors but the website intrigued me so I stayed there for a bit for entertainment. What then just occurred to me was I can't be the only one do this. I believe this is a publicity stunt by Emmis, Inc. They now probably have over a million hits to there website due to this issue. They have lured in the millions. Sponsors will definitely look at that. Let's shut down Emmis for good. This isn't the first time. Miss Jones needs to be definitely fired and serve her time in S. Asia. Lastly, I would like to point out, this is 2005. I can't believe I am still offended at these comments. These comments only gives non-Asian strenghts leverage! I would brush it off like it is nothing but the pressure of other Non-asians telling me, "Are you going to take that," is unbearable. We need a movement now to dispose of these sensitive comments. We need not act hastily the next time because these are merely words!

Anyone else seen the petition. I was going to sign it, but apparently it seems to be more racist than what went out on hot97. I mean, people have finally found a defense to back their true racist feelings. Its disgusting. You would have thought that going to sign it would mean staying away from the hate of hot97 but instead it is jumping from pan to fire as the hate on the petition link is even worse. If the organiser of that petition lets that allowed then he/she is no better than hot97. Freaking racist... and in that case then he/ she and all those else who have signed the peition have no case!! hot97 is racist, well SO ARE YOU.

Posted by: p.rico at February 3, 2005 07:38 AM

Thank you for posting the contact info to the radio station and its sponsors. I have drafted a letter to them not only about the tsunami song, but their barbaric Smack Fest 20005 competition.

Posted by: L. Jones at February 3, 2005 03:16 PM

I am deeply disappointed in anyone that would take the time to attempt to be creative by rewording a song that makes fun of hundreds of thousands of victims that have lost their lives, are infected with diseases, and lost their homes as well as their communities.....and to use "We Are In the World" is just a complete insult to the true meaning of that song.....this is absolutely unacceptable and ignorant....

I will boycott everyone of their sponsors and Hot 97 when I visit the NY!!! The entire crew should never be allowed to have a career in radio again except Ms. Info of course.....

Posted by: Royal Chic at February 3, 2005 05:22 PM

In America we have rights as Americans. One of these rights is/should be freedom of speech. This falls under that category. While it is disgusting and asinine.. They are practicing the same right you are in your protest.

Just ignore and move on. Don't be drama queens. There's a lot of sick and needless crap in the world, and you can't make it all go away.

Posted by: Wesley Ewing at February 3, 2005 05:44 PM

Everybody seems to forget that in order to put a song on the radio for broadcasting it has to be approved. Miss Jones and the morning show is part to blame but lets not forget the people behind the scenes that we do not hear. The first thing people do is try to get them fired or suspended. What happens to the engineers who put the song together so it could be played, what about the person who gave the o.k. for the engineer to put the song together. What happened to them, oh I bet there are still there. Or did we forget!!!!!

Posted by: Eisha at February 3, 2005 06:29 PM

THE SONG RIDICULES CHINESE PEOPLE BUT CHINA WASN'T EVEN AFFECTED BY THE TSUNAMI! FUCKING IDIOTS!

Posted by: street visionz at February 4, 2005 12:07 AM

WESLEY EWING NEEDS TO WAKE THE FUCK UP. HOW CAN WE AS CARING, SENSITIVE PEOPLE IGNORE SOMETHING LIKE THIS. ANYONE WHO HAS EVER LOVED SOMEONE KNOWS THAT THIS IS SONG IS MORALLY WRONG. INDIVIDUALS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS "TSUNAMI SONG" MUST KNOW HOW SOCIETY FEELS ABOUT THE WHOLE SITUATION.

Posted by: street visionz at February 4, 2005 12:17 AM

"We apologize to our listeners and to anyone who was offended," Dimick said. "[The show's entire seven-person staff] has agreed to contribute one-week's pay to the tsunami-relief efforts." John Mainelli"

millions of people have been offended by this and what now, they think they gonna be able to buy back forgiveness? i dont think so! its too late, the damage is done so congratulations..you've gained millions of enemies! somethin like that is just unacceptable and deserves more then just the termination of the show! and forget that contribution..its just pitty money anyway!

on the other hand..i think that contribution should be used to hire powerful lawyers to sue WQHT/Hot 97 for ALL their money!! and then use that proceed to go to the tsunami relief effort! now that would be somethin to hip hop to!

Posted by: Mr. OFFENDED >/ at February 4, 2005 01:15 AM

To all the people who are telling us "JUST GET OVER IT AND MOVE ON", just hope that this never happens to you, your kids or your kid's kids cause I'm sure you will feel the same outrage most of us feels right now. Let's keep the fight! Keep e-mailing and signing those petitions cause now it's personal!!

Posted by: Kid CapOne at February 4, 2005 03:35 PM

As a member of the media, I am shocked at the lack of taste, tact, and intelligance of what I heard when I downloaded the longer version of this song with the arguing in it. If we were to play something like this on our station we would be fined, and everyone involved would be fired automatically. It is unbelievable that people who were given the opportunity to be members of the media could broadcast such hateful sentiments. I sincerely hope they have been let go from thier positions and also fined in some way, with the proceeds of said fine going to the relief effort for this tragedy. I can only hope that some good can come of this and that it will open the eyes and ears of people so that they will learn to put a stop to such nonsense. It is a sad day when even someone who is as insensitive as myself is shocked at such poor taste.

Posted by: Ed Fish at February 5, 2005 04:42 AM

If I need to wake up, street visionz, then you need to grow up. Drop your infantile language and try the correct way.

This is the same garbage that has been going on with Howard Stern for quite some time. People fought and died for this right! People are out in Iraq dying right now to help them have the right to their free speech! Forgive me for this, but I can't help but wonder if anyone else has red Fahrenheit 451? You can't keep your freedoms by supporting the book burners. In the same manner you can't expect to say what you want while supporting those who wish to take that very right away.

You want to know how to really punish those types? You don't listen. That is your right. You have the right not to hear it, but instead you all went and listened! Guess what? I NEVER DID. I don't want too. It is my right not to hear things I don't want to hear. It is a pity you guys have chosen to do exactly that. Why subject yourself to it? Why bother?

There is just something people must get through their heads: You can't have your cake and eat it too. You can't have a part in the constitution that forbids taking away the right to free speech and yet want free speech. It's just been one stupid little thing after another. You're walking right into censorship.

Bottom line: People should have the right to say what they want, and you should have the right to ignore it.

Arun here, representing Eurasians in the Netherlands ;)

I listened the tsunami song today, I got sick of it, it really disgusted me.. It made me mad, no it made me furious.. I didn't know what to do to complain or whatever.. I sent one email to that FCC but that won't be helping as much as I hope..

Wesley Ewing,

By telling those of us who are offended by this song to get over the issue is bordering censorship in itself, isn't it? We merely want the same respect that others would want for themselves. How would you feel if you were the target of slanderous racist remarks?

Have you guys seen Emmis Communications stock slide. There was a little upswing due to the first few days of uproar over this disgrace, but it went down down down! Keep sliding baby! Woo-hoo! The Emmis stock symbol is EMMS.

Gee, I bet Todd Lynn and Rick Delgado are resentful about how Miss Jones didn't go down along with them! That's gotta be pretty demeaning, huh? I wonder whatever Miss Jones has said behind their backs to save her own ass. I would watch my back if I were you, Miss Jones. Lynn and Delgado were once your partners-in-crime, but now, they could be you biggest rivals/enemies.

Wesley Ewing.
Your comments are ignorant. The constitution does not protect the kind of free speech that Jones and Monkeys committed. Just like you cant go in to a theater and yell "Fire", just like you cant print or speak against the US during times of a Congress declared war. As well, the Consitution does not protect "hate speech" against any entire groups of people, be it by gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or any other groups. If someone stated "all n***ers should die", thats not protected by the Constitution. There is free speech in the US, but read the fine print. That fine print is what keeps people from buying an advertisement in the newspapers stating "Wesley Ewing sucks big mandingo cocks and likes it" or "All Honkeys are incest lovin Rednecks". Theres something called Civil liberties, and these statements encroach on the civil liberties of entire groups of people, or individuals. As well, our soldiers are not in Iraq dyeing for those ingrateful fucks. There doing it so our children, and our children's children dont have to deal with that sick fuck Saddam.(plus oil, but thats another thread)

First, there's no place you can get the whole song and make your oun opinion. But from what I read - IT'S JUST A PARODY. People who believe the song is insulting, DO NOT HAVE ANY SENSE OF HUMOR and may be little brains. It's should be insulting for them that they consider it insulting. I'm the immigrant also, I'm almost 50 years old, but I see it's as a humor, the VERY DARK HUMOR, yes, but not more than the parody. People have to understand it's just the parody. In my country people who created this style of literature got killed in 1930s by communists, and now it happen in USA. It's very dangerous, more dangerous than you think. Today you can get fired for the parody, tomorrow you will be jaled and the day after tomorrow you'll get killed.

just out of curiosity, where and when were you born?

Alona,
Your full of shit... I think your some 12 year old kid who has no concept of right and wrong.

Posted by: BlackPower at February 17, 2005 04:00 PM

It is plain and simple really... these people are a bunch of ignorant fools that don't even know what the hell they are talking about. Fools who think that what they are doing makes them stand out. Let me tell them something, this time they suceeded. But as a result of their stupidity, they stand out more as fools than in any other more honorable way. Stupid people like this would never know how it feels until they actually feel the situation first hand. So... why don't we all put them in Iraq to fight without any weapons, then we'll see who will be crying for help then! Everything has a boundry, but this time they've gone too far!

Posted by: Anna M. at February 18, 2005 07:00 PM

Alona,
I understand that everyone has their own opinion on things, but I'm guessing that you are not comprehending very well what this whole thing is about. I am also a foreigner from a country that is greatly effected by the tsunami. Sure, the song may be a parody, but it does not give the DJs the right to hate on all the victims. A song is a song, but what the DJs said on air is NOT a song. Please get your facts straight before commenting, as you are a foriegner, it will make us all look bad.

Posted by: Anna M. at February 18, 2005 07:11 PM

thanks anna for straightening everything out and i have to agree with all the other people that were insulted by this what kind of ignorant fool would make a tragedic event humorous thats just plain stupid!!!IT IS SO NOT FUNNY ITS STUPID PEOPLE LIKE THEM WHO ENDS UP LEARNING THE HARD WAY AND YOU KNOW WHAT I BELIEVE THEY WILL LEARD BUT ITS GONNA HIT THEM HARD...THEY NEVER SEEM TO PUT THERE OWN PEOPLE IN TO CONSIDERATION ON HOW THEY WOULD FELL SO I SUGGEST THE RADIO STATION COMPANY TO FIRE THEM!!!! i think that not only should these people get fired for what they said they should be jailed and then sent to another country just like what anna said!!! WHAT THE FUCK THEY SAID THAT THE KIDS WILL BE SOLD TO CHILD SLAVERY NO THEM MOTHER FUCKERS SHOULD THATS A DAM SHAME TO KNOW THAT THEY ARE LOW CLASS...I GUESS THEIR MOTHER NEVER TAUGHT THEM ANYTHING...."I BELIEVE THOSE WHO DO STUPID SHIT LIKE THAT GET SHIT BACK AND ON EVERYTHING THAT SHIT WILL HIT THEM SO HARD THEY'LL BE THE ONE CRYING FOR THEIR MOM"....THEM STUPID ASS IGNORANT,SELFISH NEVER LEARNED TO THINK FOOLS!!!I SAY THOSE STAFF WHO WERE INVOLVE IN IT SHOULD BETTER HIDE BUT YOU KNOW WHAT EVEN IF THEY DO HIDE MARK THIS WE WILL FIND U OR OTHER PEOPLE WILL GET YOU GUYS!!!!!!I HOPE THEY GET FIRED AND NEVER FIND ANOTHER JOB BECAUSE WHY WOULD ANY COMPANY WANT IGNORANT AND UNEDUCATED PEOPLE LIKE THEM TO WORK!!!!!

Posted by: susie at February 18, 2005 07:52 PM

I'm from USSR where a half a country was killed by communists. People got killed for just their different opinion. Nobody got REALLY damaged by this song, it was the nature who did this awful job. But REAL people got fired and NEVER have another job. And everyone of you hate them. They did not hate anybody, it was heavy dark humor. YOU HATE THEM! Think about it!

US Presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush Sr arrive in Sri Lanka 20th February. Sri Lankans are very angry that Miss Jones and Hot 97 and Emmis Radio have got away with insulting the dead in Sri Lanka.

Contact the American Embassy in Colombo over the racist Hot 97 tsunami song. Clinton and Bush Sr have been asked to make a statement about Hot 97's cruel tsunami song as they will be touring the tsunami hit areas of Sri Lanka.

Daily News article about the vist:

Former US Presidents to visit Matara

Former US Presidents George Bush Snr and Bill Clinton will arrive in Sri Lanka tomorrow afternoon and hold an evening meeting with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

They will tour tsunami-affected areas in Matara on Monday morning and then depart for the Maldives. The visit comes at the request of President George W. Bush and is not connected to any role Clinton might take up with the United Nations after returning to the United States.

The two former Presidents will visit a debris-clearing project near Matara Fort where USAID is providing cash-for-work and equipment to people affected by the tsunami to help expedite the clean up.

This will be their first ever visit to Sri Lanka.

President George W. Bush has asked the two former Presidents to head up private sector fund-raising for relief and reconstruction.

Alona,
1)the communists didnt kill HALF the people in russia. So stop exaggerating.
2) When you state in your broken russo-english "Nobody got REALLY damaged by this song", you obviously have ice running through your veins, or Stolichnaya, or perhaps a combination of both. People were hurt, if not physically, emotionally, which i argue can be just as destructive. Alot of people here are minorties and have been spit on and cursed at for no other reason than being different. Coming from Russia, you of all people should understand this pain that this causes. UNNCESSARY PAIN
3) How do you compare this event to Stalin's Regime during the 1930's?? AGAIN, stop exaggerating

Posted by: BlackPower at February 20, 2005 04:04 PM

I just don't understand why the Hot97 employees keep coming to this website and writing in their "freedom of speech" crap. No one should should say anything negative about the "Tsunami Song" because that would limit our free speech? Give me a break and read up on your Constitution and Supreme Court decisions.

Freedom of Speech is what this whole thing is all about. You have the freedom to say what racist thing you want, and we have the freedom to pressure your sponsors and employers to get rid of your sorry asses. People are getting fired/suspended/whatever, no one is getting jailed/tortured/killed because of playing the "Tsunami Song."

When you find yourself in Jail for playing the "Tsunami Song," then that's when you should start complaining about Freedoms and Freedom of Speech. I'm surprised the Russian didn't know the difference between Freedom of Speech and the Marketplace of Public Opinion. Freedom of Speech is exactly why Miss Jones was able to play the song she did and is not rotting away in some prison now or dead. She can play the song; however, that's not without the consequences of public opinion.

Jokes are jokes, and people get fired for telling jokes in the workplace a lot now-a-days. Especially jokes that offend. Why should Miss Jones be any different? You know she's loving this publicity anyway. She needs her sorry ass fired.

I'm writing to Coca-Cola, plus I'm mentioning the "Tsunami Song" situation to people in the grocery line that are buying coke products. Some put the coke back. I haven't told them yet but I'm sure Coke would love to hear about that.

Next I'm going for the indirect sponsors (the ones that sponsor an Emmis-owned TV channel near my area). Yes, freedom of speech is a wonderful thing. I'm using it right now.

Posted by: whatevah at February 22, 2005 03:49 PM

Yeah.. it does sound like HOT97 person, probably one of the fools who got fired or miss fat ass jones herself. A russian born in the 1950's probably doesnt know heavy dark humour is. HOT97.. what a joke..

Posted by: BlackPower at February 23, 2005 10:42 PM

Let me start out by stating that I'm asian, and although I feel that Miss Jones and everyone involved in the tsunami parody should rot in hell, I think the previous racists comments attacking all black people are just as bad, if not worse. We should be offended not because we are asians, but because we are all human beings. We need to better this situation by standing together, not making it worse by segregating ourselves. What is so laughable about this this song anyways? I understand that some parodies can be funny but how can you laugh at the tragedies and deaths of so many people! The fact that they are giving up a weeks pay doesn't make everything okay again. The damage has been done and there's nothing anyone can do to pull the hurtful comments back. The only way to bring justice to this situation is to take Miss jones and anyone involved off the air to prevent things like this from happening.

Posted by: BRIDLADY at March 18, 2005 04:38 AM

A quick lesson about freedom of speech- It does not exist. There are always limitations to free speech, and the thought that you can just say whatever you want whenever you want to say it is simply not factual. For example, if I'm in public, and I just start calling someone an asshole or a bitch, I could get arrested for harrassment. If I say "I think I'm going to bomb a building" I can get arrested for intent to commit a terrorist act. Yeah, these are obvious scenarios, but they prove the fact that you cannot go around saying what you want to say. It's a myth. Additionally, the airwaves are not considered a "wide open forum." The FCC sets rules and regulations as far as what is considered acceptable speech- that's certainly not the definition of free speech. Howard Stern gets fined 500,000.00 for saying something on the air, how can you say that free speech exists? But the FCC only goes after a pariah like Howard Stern, a safe person to attack. You can't attack black people anymore in this country, everyone is afraid that if you attack a black celebrity your career will be ruined by charlatans like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. You'll get sued so hard you'll never be able to function in the industry again. To tell you the truth, the reason Hot 97 won't fire the bitch is twofold: They're afraid of the repurcussions from the black community of listeners. In other words, they'll lose their fanbase, and create an uproar. They'll have the NAACP and the ACLU on their doorstep in a heartbeat. Also, they could afford to lose the others, they were considered casualties. If they lose Miss Jones, they're afraid their ratings will plummet (more than they already have), along with the other problems. Their decision will hurt them in the long run though, I'm sure. It's just up to people to continue the boycott and spread the word.

Black people need to be accountable too. They need to stop cheering when someone like OJ goes free, and they need to stop supporting blatant racists like Miss Jones when they abuse their position in the community. Obviously I'm not talking about all black people, just the ones who have been corrupted by the thought that everything negative that happens to them is a result of racism. Alot of the negative is a result of racism, but not all of it.

Hi seb from Great Britain

Here in Britain that would have brought criminal charges of
INCITEMENT OF RACIAL HATRED

Many of the music shows would not get air play or would be uncensored.

The use of of the word RACE should be eliminated from our vocabilary as it means species - there is only one hum species

See RACE THE POWER OF ILLUSION
http://www.pbs.org/race/001_WhatIsRace/001_00-home.htm

here is a short summary

"RACE THE POWER OF ILLUSION

I TEN THINGS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT RACE

Our eyes tell us that people look different. No one has trouble distinguishing a Czech from a Chinese. But what do those differences mean? Are they biological? Has race always been with us? How does race affect people today?
There's less - and more - to race than meets the eye:

1. Race is a modern idea. Ancient societies, like the Greeks, did not divide people according to physical distinctions, but according to religion, status, class, even language. The English language didn't even have the word 'race' until it turns up in 1508 in a poem by William Dunbar referring to a line of kings.

2. Race has no genetic basis. Not one characteristic, trait or even gene distinguishes all the members of one so-called race from all the members of another so-called race.

3. Human subspecies don't exist. Unlike many animals, modern humans simply haven't been around long enough or isolated enough to evolve into separate subspecies or races. Despite surface appearances, we are one of the most similar of all species.

4. Skin color really is only skin deep. Most traits are inherited independently from one another. The genes influencing skin color have nothing to do with the genes influencing hair form, eye shape, blood type, musical talent, athletic ability or forms of intelligence. Knowing someone's skin color doesn't necessarily tell you anything else about him or her.

5. Most variation is within, not between, "races." Of the small amount of total human variation, 85% exists within any local population, be they Italians, Kurds, Koreans or Cherokees. About 94% can be found within any continent. That means two random Koreans may be as genetically different as a Korean and an Italian.

6. Slavery predates race. Throughout much of human history, societies have enslaved others, often as a result of conquest or war, even debt, but not because of physical characteristics or a belief in natural inferiority. Due to a unique set of historical circumstances, ours was the first slave system where all the slaves shared similar physical characteristics.

7. Race and freedom evolved together. The U.S. was founded on the radical new principle that "All men are created equal." But our early economy was based largely on slavery. How could this anomaly be rationalized? The new idea of race helped explain why some people could be denied the rights and freedoms that others took for granted.

8. Race justified social inequalities as natural. As the race idea evolved, white superiority became "common sense" in America. It justified not only slavery but also the extermination of Indians, exclusion of Asian immigrants, and the taking of Mexican lands by a nation that professed a belief in democracy. Racial practices were institutionalized within American government, laws, and society.

9. Race isn't biological, but racism is still real. Race is a powerful social idea that gives people different access to opportunities and resources. Our government and social institutions have created advantages that disproportionately channel wealth, power, and resources to white people. This affects everyone, whether we are aware of it or not.

10. Colorblindness will not end racism. Pretending race doesn't exist is not the same as creating equality. Race is more than stereotypes and individual prejudice. To combat racism, we need to identify and remedy social policies and institutional practices that advantage some groups at the expense of others. "

In effect the common racial discriptions and in particular the word Race did not come into usage untill the late 1800's

The continued use of Race perpuates the Notion that we are of different species
The current terms should be
Xenophobic = Hatred of foreigners
Bigotry

Ethenicism[ethnic prejudice/hatred] okay i made this one up .

Here in the Uk we dont have the any goes attitude.

Things only happen in the context of society
Getting back to ethnic hatred we are all guilty of it to some degree.

see thread
http://groups.google.co.uk/groups?hl=en&lr=&threadm=8mqvno%2465j%241%40nnrp1.deja.com&rnum=3&prev=/groups%3Fq%3D%2522Fancy%2Ban%2Bindian%2522%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26selm%3D8mqvno%252465j%25241%2540nnrp1.deja.com%26rnum%3D3

At the end of the day the color that matters to people in high positions is green

I was going to say you could start by vowing to never listen to such tv/radio stations again but from one i understand the main audience is Black Hispanic
Target the sponsors not for just this one station but for the whole network
Finally maintain vigilence and
DONT HAVE A SHORT TERM MEMORY

It should not be allowed to go back to normal a month - a year from now
Other wise as Don King said "You are all involved in the same hypocrisy"

Perhaps communites should push for a law that protects ethnic groups, religous groups from persecution.
