January 24, 2005More Weak Responses from Hot 97, Sprint..1/31/05 UPDATE:
watch this page for updates on the story Hot 97's morning show aired as usual today, with nobody suspended or removed. There was no discussion of the conroversy except a brief apology from Miss Jones, read twice during the four hour show. A taped apology from Program director John Dimick also aired once every hour. Otherwise Miss Jones, Todd Lynn and the rest went on like business as usual. EDIT: My tape didn't catch the apologies, if anybody has the audio please pass it on. Amazingly, they seem to think this is all behind them now. Just a few insincere half-apologies and we will all go away. I certainly hope we prove them wrong. Hot 97n has now proven they have no conscience or integrity, so it's especially important for us to keep going over their heads, to Emmis corporate and the sponsors. Keep hitting Emmis as hard as we can. The Here's My Byline blog got a reply from Sprint, about their apparent sponsorship of Hot 97's bigotry. Sprint claims that Hot 97 "appears to have disciplined the responsible parties," which is not true. No disciplinary actions of any kind have been announced. No, having the staff voluntarily donate some money does not count. Calling that an appropriate "discipline" is insulting. Any thoughts about this pseudo-response can be sent to James.W.Fisher@mail.sprint.com STATEMENT FROM SPRINT P.S. While you're here, the best way to show that these people don't represent us is by going to Red Cross and make a donation of our own to help the Tsunami victims. oh please. a weeks of pay is not "discipline" Posted by: Richard at January 24, 2005 06:41 PM yes me again. so this wason HOT 97's website. "OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON AIRING OF TSUNAMI PARODY SONG Both HOT97's program director and Miss Jones issued on-air apologies on Monday stating that the material was offensive and should not have been aired. HOT97 takes pride in its community involvement and in the last few weeks has joined with broadcasters nationwide to raise money for victims of the Tsunami. Our relief effort will result in a substantial cash donation. " would anyone happen to have recorded their apologies? Posted by: richard at January 24, 2005 06:43 PM Yeah the song was bad and offensive. Hey James W. Fisher, You live on top of me haha!! Posted by: Tony at January 24, 2005 06:55 PM has anyone organized a group of protesters yet to go down to that wack ass station? i'd definitely be there if my ass lived in New York. Posted by: pissedoffasfuck at January 24, 2005 07:06 PM That is a weak response from Sprint. Posted by: Julia K. at January 24, 2005 07:12 PM how much you want to bet none of them are giving up any kind of money. there's no week's pay changing hands. the parent company is just gonna' write a check for that amount of money and hope the whole thing blows over. i can tell you this.. those people got families and bills. you can bet a week's pay would have them complaining a lot more then the happy.. business as usual shit they were spouting on air today. Posted by: whatever at January 24, 2005 07:15 PM If Miss Jones and Todd Lynn aren't removed from the morning show, I am planning a protest in front of the radio station Friday morning at 8 AM with NYU students. Please attend Posted by: Cathy at January 24, 2005 07:15 PM Hi Cathy, are you from NYU?, I am too, I'm interested in organizing a protest. Posted by: Tiffany at January 24, 2005 07:21 PM FYI. the morning show will be broadcasting live from caroline's comedy club on friday so might be better to pick a better day. i'm sure caroline's really wouldn't like all the negative attention so perhaps that's an even better plan to gather en masse. just a thought. Posted by: whatever at January 24, 2005 07:38 PM I'm white and that is f'd up, and I'm offended by it. Opie and Anthony got taken off the air, people cry about Howard Stern, and people on Hot97 can say they're going to start shooting Asians and only have to give up a week's pay? Are you out of your fucking mind? Shit, say an "Asian station" happened to be one of the top stations in the state and one of the people on the show just happened to say they're going to start shooting blacks. How long do you think that guy would live for? Maybe another 2 weeks if he stays off the streets? god damn stupid... Posted by: Dan at January 24, 2005 07:50 PM I received this automatic response. I felt the need to respond, even though it's certain that my e-mail will probably go in the iCircular File: You gave these people money; your connection to this racist trash is quite clear. Unless these people lose their jobs for the outright hatred they spew on the radio, all the pathetic "concern" in the world will not cut it. But hey, it's just a few 200,000+ chinks that lost their lives...who cares, no? Your complacency is utterly reprehensible. Posted by: JJO'S™ at January 24, 2005 07:52 PM Emmis, we're not going away. Trust me. Posted by: jose3030 at January 24, 2005 07:54 PM THIS IS SO REPULSIVE!! EMMIS DOESN'T EVEN READ THE EMAILS!! I SENT AN EMAIL CRITICIZING THEIR APOLOGY AND ...OH HERE IS WHAT I SENT:
The ‘Tsunami Song’ aired on Hot 97 WQHT-FM was a racist, and offensive, skit to both Asians and the victims of the tsunami and their family. The station has issued a weak apology and Miss Jones was forced to read an apology on the air. There have also been forced to donate a week of their pay to the tsunami relief fund. Do you really think that this is a suitable punishment? That is nothing but a slap on the wrist. The apology was obviously forced. When listeners called in to complain, Miss Jones told them all that they are not the boss of her, and she will play it whenever she wants, then played the tsunami song yet again No disciplinary actions of any kind have been announced. No, having the staff voluntarily donate some money does not count; calling that an appropriate "discipline" is insulting. HOT 97 seem to think this is all behind them now. Just a few insincere half-apologies and their problems will all go away. Hot 97 has proven they have no conscience or integrity, at all. The issue at hand is not so much the 'need for an apology'. It's the fact that Hot97's morning crew basically said that it's ok to be a bigot and a racist as long as you 'apologize' for it later. They knew full well what they were saying and that they were saying in a public forum where hundreds of people were listening. Miss Jones and her entire crew should be FIRED (excluding Miss Info, who got into a verbal conflict with Miss Jones after objecting to this song) and anyone else above them responsible for the insulting song should be reprimanded as well. Please take the appropriate action necessary.
*********** HOT 97 regrets the airing of material that made light of a serious and tragic event. We apologize to our listeners and anyone who was offended. Both HOT 97's program director and Miss Jones issued on-air apologies on Monday stating that the material was offensive and should not have been aired. HOT 97 takes pride in its community involvement and in the last few weeks has joined with broadcasters nationwide to raise money for victims of the Tsunami. Our relief effort will result in a substantial cash donation. As an additional sign of HOT 97's commitment to the cause, Miss Jones in the Morning, along with her entire staff, have agreed to contribute one week's pay to Tsunami Relief efforts. Thank you for contacting us. Rick Cummings
Posted by: richard at January 24, 2005 07:57 PM Okay I have watched all these posts go down..apologies were done and how do you know they didnt mean it? Were you there??..I bet they have more things planned..From all the comments written here with all the curses etc..expressing yourself that way doesnt make you better..I wish people had this much energy to make such a ruckus in their own enviorments/communities where things that arent fair or unjust happen everyday. I agree it was in horrible taste etc etc..it was horrible they made fun of the situation but I just feel everything you guys planned will not be an orderly protest..cursing and all kinds of name calling etc doesnt make u look better..u look as lame as they do..dont blame the whole corporation for the action of 2-4 people who actually were involved in the creation of the parody. Also from what I hear the PD had no idea this was going to air.that means he has to check them more..but really this is going TOO FAR save the energy and contribute to your community and educate those who are ignorant.. Karma is a bitch and im sure all parties responsible will feel it somewhere along the line..not now, maybe later but it will happen.. Sitting generalizing and all this self righteous ish is not making us look good Posted by: just a thought at January 24, 2005 07:59 PM Also from what I hear the PD had no idea this was going to air.that means he has to check them more..but really this is going TOO FAR Which time did the PD not know it was going on the air? The first time? I'll give you that. Unfortunately, it didn't run once. Posted by: Tom at January 24, 2005 08:05 PM Unorderly or not, I think the effort is enough. Check out this article: http://www.wnbc.com/news/4089831/detail.html A weatherman was fired for a racial slur he uttered on-air "on accident." Do you see the difference? That man was FIRED. Do you think it's asking too much for Miss Jones, Star and all the other racist people employed by HOT 97 to be fired as well? Or maybe get more than just a slap on the wrist? Posted by: Julia K at January 24, 2005 08:09 PM To the anonymous "thought" giver: The apologies are insufficient because they do not address the substance of our grievances. They do not acknowledge the racism at all, or the threat to "start shooting Asians." Where exactly did you "hear" that the Program Director didn't know it was going to be played? And even if true, how could that be a relevant excuse when it played repeatedly throughout the week in addition to being on the website 24/7? Julia is correct, and in addition, Hot 97's competition Power 105 fired Raqiyah Mays on the spot for her remarks about interracisl relationships. And after she got fired, guesss who hired her,.. Hot 97. So Hot 97 clearly has very different standards than their peers in the industry. And they need to be held accountable for that. Posted by: Jay Smooth at January 24, 2005 08:22 PM so who hired star and buc? They just got one also cuz they called out an indian woman..correct?Thats a clear channel company..if you wanna make a statement boycott both stations dont sit there and make excuses.. How does that make power 105 better? They knew what they were getting into hiring them.(star and buc)So don't gimmie me the desperate ploy for ratings on hot's side because the reason they(star and buc) got hired by power 105 was for just that RATINGS...The song was up for one day b4 it got pulled off..I know people that work there and have told me whats been happening...like i said dont blame the whole company blame the ones involved and boycott them.. Posted by: again at January 24, 2005 08:30 PM Don't blame the whole company just blame the ones involved? Okay, so in your opinion the weatherman who was fired for his "Martin Luther Coon King Jr." comment shouldn't have been fired right? Because why blame the news station he works for when you should just blame "the ones involved" i.e. the man who made the statement. So the weatherman should be responsible for his own comments, not the news station and he should still be employed (this all in your line of reasoning). That is RIDICULOUS!!! Posted by: Julia K at January 24, 2005 08:33 PM you say that the program director had no idea what was going BUT ISN'T THAT THEIR JOB?!?! if that's the case than it's obviously a problem with the station and their management. Posted by: question at January 24, 2005 08:36 PM the dude is new not an excuse but miss jones, todd yes should be fired..and no they shouldn't be employed..but like i said people are so quick to jump at a radio station but how quick do we jump when unjust shit happens in the streets everyday..run down communities and all that..help those people out..im not justifying their actions but people wanna fix the media when u need to fix ur own backyard.. Posted by: agin at January 24, 2005 08:41 PM To anonymous: You are incorrect, the song aired for more than one day. Who do you know that works there? Do you also work there? If you have inside information that would give me some insight, that you would not like to share with the public please e-mail me at jsmooth@hiphopmusic.com. It's impossible to simply blame the individuals, because they cannot be held accountable unless their employers make that happen. If Hot 97 volunteered to do that, there would be no problem. but they are refusing to do the right thing, so now they are accountable too. Posted by: Jay Smooth at January 24, 2005 08:44 PM anonymous: I agree, this type of energy also needs to be focused on other issues, I discussed that on the radio this weekend. But that does not render this issue unimportant. If you believe they should be fired, who do you imagine is supposed to fire them? Their bosses. And that's who we are focusing on. So I'm not sure that we really disagree here. Posted by: Jay Smooth at January 24, 2005 08:49 PM In a quick reply to Just a Thought... I understand what you mean, cursing and bitching is not going to do anything, spend your energy in your own communities. Good advice, but... then this is the comments section of a blog, so you have to expect this kind of bitching. Radio is a huge public medium with a reach that goes beyond our immediate communities and so the offensive words and actions expressed on Hot97 that morning was heard by many. You can't hold this sort of "isolationist" point of view on something so far-reaching as radio. Better to spread the word both in your community and outside of it, then sitting by and waiting for karma. That is not how you get things done in this world if you want things to change. So to the outraged and angered, continue to speak out. Let others know that what was expressed that morning, whether seriously or jokingly, is unacceptable and offensive. Let others know that they are not alone in their feelings of outrage. Though the actions were done by only 2-4 ignorant people, we as a society can not condone it by continuing to support and listen to the station, sponsors, etc. Dig into the the social structure and the higher powers. Hit them where they will feel it, with ratings and money. Let the station know they cannot allow such remarks to just blow over with an 'oh by the way we're sorry, and now on to the daily traffic report' attitude. So keep posting, communicate with each other, and let us non-NYC'ers know what we can do to help. Posted by: Outraged in so cali at January 24, 2005 09:00 PM To Cathy and Tiffany, Just letting you know. Apparently http://www.immigrantsolidarity.org/ is planning to hold a rally/protest in NYC too. The first week of Febuary. They drafted a letter and are asking for people to sign it. I don't know the details of the rally, but you might want to get in contact with them and coordinate. I wish I was in NYC and not in FL, I would participate. I'm not a causehead, but there some stuff that shouldn't be allowed to blow over. I'm just giving you props for the way you succinctly identified the problem and the situation. As for participating in protest, I'm in the same boat. But I've been trying to email the large news networks to have them cover this. It won't blow over if we can get them to take up the story. Just an idea. Posted by: ethan at January 24, 2005 10:46 PM also...someone should send a note to those who are helping with the tsunami relief...especially george clooney who seems to be the most outspoken...perhaps his voice can open up some more eyes to this & bring a bigger spotlight Posted by: ethan at January 24, 2005 10:52 PM Stories just ran on UPN9 and FOX5 10 o clock news in NYC. They played clips of the songs and got people's reactions on the street. They also aired some footage from today's press conference on city hall steps with John Liu from Queens (now there's someone we should all be emailing). As for all these emails, I'm sure nobody is reading them. By now those targeted have surely set up email filters to delete or autorespond to anything with tsunami in the subject or body of the email. Reality is that Jones (won't even dignify her with the title of 'miss') and Todd and the producers of the show aren't in the least bit regretful they did this. I can bet you they feel like they're being forced to apologize for something they don't feel they did wrong. And that money.. you can bet it aint coming out of anyone's pay. You think Miss Info would sit back and let them take her money when she wasn't riding with it from the get go? Wake up people, they're full of shit and it's goign to take some relentless action not only locall but aimed at reps in DC effect some change on this one. Anywhere else.. any other time... someone would be fired over this. Period. FCC says they don't think this is complaint worthy? How about when they're making death threats on public airways? (todd's comments). Sounds pretty complaint worthy to me. See you all on Friday. Posted by: whatever at January 24, 2005 10:53 PM Please note that the address for Caroline's Comedy Club is 1626 Broadway between 49th and 50th. This has me so upset that I can barely think straight. I cannot believe that in this day and age, such blatant racism and SUCH insensitivity exists! I have to clarify that I am upset enough over the mockery of such a tragedy -- the ignorance and racism merely compound the ire. I work in a top urban apparel company and have been immersed in the hiphop culture for quite some time. I was once an avid listener to Hot97, and more recently to the Morning Show. This is no longer the case. I have to reply to a comment to MagicJaundice: you said that this would never happen on the west side. However, just last year I believe, Shaquille O'Neal, at the time with the LA Lakers, made the equivalent of derogatory remarks directed at Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets by resorting to the age-old mockery of the Chinese language. He is quoted as saying, “Tell Yao Ming, ching-chong-yang-wah-ah-soh.” This was his, ahem, apology: "I said it jokingly, so this guy was just trying to stir something up that's not there. He's just somebody who doesn't have a sense of humor, like I do.” Riiight. Posted by: sylvia at January 24, 2005 11:09 PM the issue about the protest venue: they may decide to change venues if they find out about the protest. i say we protest at sponsors' sites, like a sprint pcs store (and don't give details as to which one), mcdonalds, popeyes, etc.. thoughts? who's in on this? Posted by: LS at January 24, 2005 11:18 PM the story got picked up by REAUTERS and MSNBC! http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6863581/ Posted by: richard at January 24, 2005 11:23 PM they aint changing the venue from carolines unless carolines don't want them there neither. they got a live broadcast happening that morning and it's being done to draw a crowd for the smackfest shit they got going on. either they'd cancel the broadcast from there.. and then you'd hear about it because they'd announce it. or.. the show must go on. either way.. you could always leave someone at the first site directing people to the station.. and yeah.. tighten the screws. the bigger this gets outside of NYC.. the less of an option they'll have of keeping that bitch on the air. once the money stops coming in... she's a liability. Posted by: whatever at January 24, 2005 11:37 PM THE WB, CHANNEL 11 had the best coverage of the incident (I saw FOX 5, UPN 9 and WB 11). They exposed more of the song (some stations held back), and talked more about it. Also, there was more coverage of the city councilmen talking on it at city hall, as well as narration by correspondent Pauline Liu. I don't see any firing, all I see is their ratings going UP.... Their little comment is SIMPLY NOT enough. Posted by: tom at January 25, 2005 10:37 AM Toyota is one company we should also contact. Their SCION ad is still on the front page of Hot 97! They should be pulling their ads! Posted by: tom at January 25, 2005 10:38 AM James, I was already aware of this statement at the time I emailed you. An apology is appropriate when someone says something offensive. It is hardly sufficient when somone specifically incites racial violence (Todd Lynn: "I'm going to start shooting Asians"). You say Sprint monitors the content it sponsors, but you have not decided to pull adverstising from this station. In effect, Sprint has condoned it by continuing to support that station. The DJs repeatedly, over several days, played this song and refused repeated requests to stop until they got the maximum publicity out of it. This was a publicity stunt and Sprint is attempting to profit off the publicity of racial hatred. If you think appropriate action was taken, I have to question whether the message of the Tsunami song really "runs contrary" to Sprint's committment to diversity. During the week of January 16th- January 21st, WQHT, (also known as Hot 97), a local radio station in New York City, has willfully and repeatedly aired a highly offensive parody mocking the victims of the tsunami tragedy while using racial epithets.

Posted by: Lou at January 26, 2005 12:32 PM Sprint is going to pull advertising from HOT97 As of Wednesday, January 26, Sprint updated its public statement on the issue of the Hot 97 tsunami parody song: STATEMENT FROM SPRINT * Because the tsunami parody content on the Hot 97 program was in violation of our company standards, Sprint intends to suspend its advertising on the station. The following information was issued previously: * Sprint does NOT have any connection to the Tsunami Song aired on Hot 97 FM. * Sprint strongly objects to any communication or other effort making light of the devastation of the tsunami disaster. The content of the "Tsunami song" clearly runs contrary to Sprint's commitment to diversity and inclusion, and is not in any way supported or condoned by Sprint. Needless to say, our hearts go out to the tsunami victims and their families -- for this and other reasons, the Sprint Foundation and our associates have worked together since the tsunami tragedy to raise funds for disaster relief efforts and will continue to do so. *Sprint has purchased advertising time on Hot 97 but was incorrectly identified as a sponsor of the segment of the show in which the song was referenced. In any case, Sprint was unaware and had no connection to the content of the "Tsunami Song." *Sprint has expressed our strong concern about this content to the radio station. The station has issued a public apology and appears to have disciplined the responsible parties. Sprint continually evaluates acceptable content against our own guidelines and we will continue to monitor the process with all outlets in which we advertise.

I'm glad to see so many people on here writing about how pissed off they are, cuz I'm FUCKIN pissed. Studying Asian American studies, you know what I think we as a people need to do? We need to show that Asians won't put up with this crap. We gotta stop being the Model Minority and stop just brushing this shit off our shoulders. People are stupid enough to say these types of things because they don't FEAR Asians, they don't FEAR what Asians will say or do. African Americans have made more progress than Asians in that category, and you know why? People are just plain AFRAID of blacks, people are AFRAID of their reactions to something like this. Nobody in their right mind would make a song about black people and how they are dying in Africa from war and disease. And it's cause these people would get brutally beaten up or shot to death, and that's the truth. Asians are not respected in all areas of the country, and that is why we all need to put aside our differences of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, South Asian, Southeast Asian, etc, and come together as ASIAN AMERICANS. We all live here and deal with this stuff together, and racist people don't see the differences in us (how many times have you been called fuckin Chinaman when you're really Korean or something else). So we need to work as one unified people and start reacting more drastically to shit like this. I'm not saying go out and shoot a racist, but do not lose respect for yourself or your race by just standing idly by. It's easy to rant and rave, but how often are our complaints heard by deaf ears? ALL THE TIME. Is it Carolines or the Hot 97 studio or both? On a personal note and as a reply to "the one I was born with", I've been listening to this station since I was kid in the 90's discovering hip hop for the first time. I woke up to the morning show on Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday when I first heard the song playing from my clock radio. I was shocked awake by the lyrics and could not believe what I was hearing. Despite all the other studid, sophomoric little bits they have done in the past, I could not believe they threw all of their humanity away to produce such ignorance for the sake of ratings. And then, not even 10 minutes later, they play a tribute song to Dr. King with quotes like, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." How can you laugh at child slavery, call the victims "chinks", and then act socially enlightened with a tribute song? Where is their character? After that dazzling display of hypocrisy I turned the station off and haven't listened to it since. I will also be putting my Queens ass on the train to 395 Hudson even if only to let them know that they have killed hip hop for me entirely. Posted by: terrie at February 1, 2005 02:05 AM I'll take this opportunity to say that Emmis Communications is a terrible corporation. I used to work for them but quickly learned of their negligence and ignorance towards the listeners of their radio stations. They spend so much time comparing and contrasting themselves from other media giants like Clear Channel, trying to distance themselves from their rivals' bad wrap. They say they "care" about the listeners...they only want to give them the best...that they employ only the best of the best and treat them like family so that hopefully that warmth is translated through the air waves to their listeners. Well BULLSHIT. They are no better than their rival companies. They don't care about their listeners, they don't care about the message they are sending or the quality of their programs. In the end, all they care about is the money the station makes and money that ends up in their pockets. This whole incident makes quite clear the kind of radio station they run here. Neglecting to recognize something so blatantly offensive is reckless, careless, and just plain insensitive. Of course the place to point blame should begin with the show hosts and producers, but definitely extends to the radio station programming director all the way up to Emmis' big wigs. Their automatic response and reply is sickening. It is cold and I do not find it genuine at all....just corporate political bullshit. This is why I refuse to support any of their radio or television stations. I do not believe in the kind of message they send their listeners and do not believe in them as a company. Sadly to say, however disgusting and sickening the song was, I am not surprised that such a tactless and cruel prank came from an Emmis Communications radio station. Posted by: M at February 2, 2005 10:20 PM Emmis communications, Sprint and other sponsors are clueless. Sprints auto reponse from Jim Fisher speaks volumes about their racist attitude.
