January 28, 2005Rally At Hot 97 Studios1/31/05 UPDATE: Todd Lynn Fired 8PM EDIT: NY1's report on the rally is here, they estimated the crowd at 100. But NY Newsday calls it at 200 (I told you so!), and they pass on a new statement from Hot 97 that claims "the salaries of Miss Jones and the morning show crew will be donated to tsunami relief efforts 'for the duration of this suspension.'" Newsday also has photos of the rally here. 6PM EDIT: Latest news coverage - Daily News, Newsday. Please pass on details of TV/radio coverage from today's rally if you catch it! 3PM EDIT: Jimmy Meng's office passed on this update: "based on multiple phone calls from Assemblyman Jimmy Meng (the first Asian-American in the NY State Assembly) and NYC Councilman Bill Perkins, the following companies have withdrawn their ads: Coca-Cola, Toyota, Reebok, H&R Block, Babies R Us." I just got back from Hot 97's studios, where at least 150-200 people came out in the FREEZING COLD. I'm sure Hot 97 and Emmis thought the cold would keep everyone home, and this controversy might start dying down. But today it was clear that the community is more organized and energized than ever. Everyone from students to grandmothers, from Hip-Hoppers (Kuttin Kandi, Rosa Clemente) to City Councilmen (John Liu, Bill Perkins, Charles Barron and more), came out to speak against Hot 97's hate radio. I'll be featuring activists from today's rally on my radio show, Saturday at Midnight on WBAI 99.5 FM in NY. You can tune in online here. (and we're in our fundraising drive for WBAI right now, so any support you can call in and give tomorrow will be greatly appreciated! You'll help keep anti-racist radio alive) Here are some pictures sent in by Cheryl, a protestor from Cardozo School of Law (I will post my own pics here soon: http://i.xanga.com/cherryxq/P1180182.JPG Comments
=) thanks for the pics Posted by: g at January 28, 2005 02:18 PM i was also at the protest and was very proud to be a part of this movement. I'm sure there would have been a ton of more people had the weather not been so cold. I also think a lot of people didn't come because of the stipulation that stated only organization leaders should show up. Posted by: angryhuman at January 28, 2005 02:19 PM Thanks fer the pics! Where can I send the money to if I can't call in? Posted by: L. at January 28, 2005 03:15 PM We cannot let the FCC turn a blind eye to this. For a spokesperson to say it's unlikely they'll do anything against them, and to say that it wasn't indecent.... Since when did it become decent to broadcast racial slurs, mock tradegy victims, and talk of selling children to slavery? The FCC has some damn nerve! Posted by: fubabee at January 28, 2005 03:16 PM my roommate came up with a great idea: how about, instead of firing them, force them to go do relief work in tsunami-afflicted companies for one month? On their own dime? Much better lesson, then doesn't afford them the martyr ticket. the photos are fantastic, thanks jay. Haven't we heard this static before? Some radio station hires a loudmouth morning host to goose the Arbitrons and make the groggy listeners spray mouthfuls of coffee into the air: "Oh, my God! Did he just say what I think he said?" And then this very same morning jerk goes on the air and says something predictably offensive and - whoa, station executives are suddenly shocked, shocked, shocked! A shock jock shocking? Well, who exactly did they think they were hiring here? Doctor Phil? Which brings us, of course, to Hot 97 (WQHT-FM), where morning ring-mistress Miss Jones is now suspended indefinitely, along with her six-person on-air crew, for repeatedly airing a parody song that poked fun at the people who died in the Asian tsunamis. Now there's a real knee-slapper, huh? A couple of hundred thousand dead! To the tune of "We Are the World," Miss Jones' twisted ditty mixed anti-Asian slurs with floating bodies and orphaned kids. City Council member John Liu wasn't charmed one bit. He and some other local Asian pols raised the first public ruckus. They're planning a sidewalk rally today, demanding that Emmis Broadcasting, Hot 97's owner, dump Miss Jones and sidekick Todd Lynn for good. But it was McDonalds, Sprint and other bolting advertisers who really seemed to grab the attention of Emmis president Rick Cummings. "Morally and socially indefensible ... ashamed and deeply sorry," Cummings said. Now, the Hot 97 tsunami-yuck-it-uppers aren't the only local radio talent finding their giggles in strange places these days. And the future of in-your-face radio isn't shifting just because of one nasty parody song. At New Jersey's WKXW-FM, host Craig Carton was ragging mercilessly on the psychiatric and medical history of the new governor's wife. Mary Jo Codey has suffered well documented bouts of postpartum depression and cancer. "What Governor [Richard] Codey ought to do is approve the use of medical marijuana so women can have a joint and relax instead of putting their babies in a microwave," Carton allowed. The governor probably should have exhaled a moment before flying into a stupid rage. Instead, he surrendered the aggrieved-husband high road and threatened to assault the radio host. "I wish I weren't governor," the Star-Ledger quoted Codey as telling his tormentor in the station hallway. "I'd take you out." The governor quibbled with the quote, but just a little. "I didn't say I would take him out," he insisted. "I said I would take him outside. When you're Irish, you take them outside, not out." Either way, these two probably deserve each other. And something else is hard to dispute. Both Miss Jones and Craig Carton are idiots, same as WNEW-FM's Opie and Anthony were idiots for running that public-sex stunt 2 1/2 years ago in St. Patrick's Cathedral. Even on the radio, some things just aren't funny, including massive drowning deaths, sex in the pews and a wife's mental illness. But none of this is happening in a vacuum, and outgoing FCC Chairman Michael Powell deserves at least some of the blame. Under Powell's iron hand, the Federal Communication Commission went on a four-year rampage against "indecency" on the air. Coming from his mouth, indecency was always a code word for one thing: S-E-X. Nothing else is ever indecent to him. So CBS was hit with giant fines for Janet Jackson's Super Bowl "wardrobe malfunction." Opie and Anthony were chased to the barren prairie of XM satellite radio, where no one (including the listeners) is paying much attention to them. Howard Stern was leaned on 'til he announced he's going satellite, too, to XM competitor Sirius. And up and down the radio dial, second-string hosts with no imagination and middling talent decided to take the easy way out. Instead of talking dirty, they started talking mean. They traded in the sex stunts and the nipple flashes for the shrink files and the bodies on the beach. Aren't there any clever grown-ups left in radio-land? You tell me which is more obscene. FCC action is one of the demands lodged by City Council members and immigrant activists, who are furious over the now infamous Tsunami song—a demand they'll probably repeat when they hold a protest outside Hot 97's studios at 11 a.m. on Friday. But it's not clear that the feds will deliver, or even that they can. Sure, the FCC has been making a mint going after indecency in recent months. In December, it fined the licensee of stations in Leavenworth and Wichita, Kansas, the sum of $220,000 for broadcasting a bit called "Naked Twister," featuring "local strippers" and naughty "descriptions of the participants' vaginal areas." That fine followed the FCC's high-profile actions against Viacom for on-air no-no's by Howard Stern, Bono, and Janet Jackson. But the FCC seems more reluctant to go after language that offends because of racial, rather than sexual, content. Take the case of Florida station WLLD, fined $7,000 for a September 11, 1999, broadcast of a local rap concert. The song included the following ditty: N–s and your motherf–ing wide mouth. (Unintelligible.) Damn that bitch can pump with it. You want to bang, n–r. You want to bang, n–r. You're off the chain, n–r. We running game, n–r. You want to bang, n–r. It ain't no thing, n–r. We off the chain, n–r . . . But it wasn't the N-word the FCC had a problem with. Instead, it was that the song included "language that, in context, depicts or describes sexual or excretory activities or organs in terms patently offensive." That's the standard for indecency that the FCC goes by. Of course, in the WLLD case, the intent behind the use of the N-word might be different from the way c–k was used in the Hot 97 Tsunami song. But since the song didn't refer to the tidal wave victims' sexual or excretory behavior, it may be a target the FCC is unwilling or unable to hit. (For more on this topic, see my colleague Kareem Fahim's posting on how one Boston talk-jock says we ought to deal with the "fifth column" of Muslims living in America.) But for once, the marketplace might be fulfilling a job that government can't handle. Some of the Hot 97 morning show's sponsors have pulled out, including McDonald's, which went from "lovin' it" to indefinitely suspending ads on January 24. "McDonald's does not support programs that discriminate or are insensitive to the plight of people suffering from devastating events," said a Mickey D's statement. Reebok yanked its spots, saying it has "requested that the station institute a rigorous policy to prevent this kind of material from being produced and broadcast in the future." "Until a response is received from the station, Reebok has indefinitely pulled all of its advertising," the shoemaker said. Sprint has also pulled its ads, calling the song "deplorable." And Popeye's spokeswoman tells me the firm has received about half a dozen e-mails and a few calls of complaint, and while their ad contract with Hot 97 had already ended, Popeye's asked the station to end all mentions of the company on the air. Those lost ad dollars might sting more than any fine. Posted by: nother article at January 28, 2005 03:26 PM Where is Miss Jones hiding now? Her web site is inaccesible now. Posted by: Love Advocate at January 28, 2005 03:49 PM I heard Hot 97 is having a tsunami relief concert? Truth to that? What a convenient way to get Miss Jones back. They got together in the past week and ORGANIZED THIS PROTEST RALLY. They did the news release and gained the media attention from New York to California. In addition to that, in order to make the protest rally more sucessful and effective, yesterday, council member John Liu's office managed to make 50 posters. People working in that office even stayed until 10 o'clock to make these posters. (I know this because I was one of the people that made the many posters and got marker smudges all over my hands. Some of our posters include the one with the Reebok logo on yellow neon and the GEICO lizard saying "I support hatred" on green neon.) Therefore, please consider revising your first paragraph that implies Jimmy Meng's sole effort in this. Thank you very much. Of course, probably those people will probably laugh at this the same way they laughed at the Tsunami song... I apologize if this offends people. I am not posting this to be funny. I am posting this to make a point to some. I have changed the lyrics here to something closer to home. Do you like them? [Chorus] Again, I know its completely innappropriate. LIU: (on "number") Come on, Jimmy, they don't want you! Posted by: lateadopter at January 28, 2005 04:53 PM I liked this article: This is NOT the Publicity Radio Needs There are a couple of questions I'd like to ask management and staff of New York City's Hot 97, WQHT-FM, now that they've succeeded in putting radio on the world map. Even though their intent was to get the WQHT call letters noticed, having this fiasco discussed in the world's press shows how big a stick struck the hornet's nest. Let's see... 200,000+ dead - that's DEAD - in the biggest natural disaster multiple generations have witnessed, and the station's morning crew airs a sleazy parody song? Then, the best the station comes up with is "HOT 97 regrets the airing of material that made light of a serious and tragic event." Question #1-directed at Miss Jones, in reference to her exchange with Miss Info... (If you are not aware of the words between the two, read about the story through the link below. Miss Info, who is Asian American, challenged Miss Jones' airing "The Tsunami Song," which started this mess.) ...ah, the question: How could you speak to a co-worker this way? Here's a taste of Miss Jones' concept of entertainment and respect for folks she works with: "You feel superior, probably because you're Asian." MJ has a co-host that obviously feels the same way. Todd Lynn interjected, "I'm gonna start shooting Asians." Question #2-directed at management: Do you really expect anyone to believe you had no knowledge of this, through its multiple airings between Jan. 17-21? That this subject was even joked about shows a lack of sensitivity from the people in control at WQHT-FM, even though being sensative to a community's needs is required when holding a broadcast license. That there's only been a "suspension" of the morning crew is disgraceful. They should be fired, and it should not stop there. If Emmis does anything less than replace the whole team (GM, GSM, OPS Director, Program Director, and morning crew), the license should be revoked, and other people should be given a shot at using this radio frequency for the good of the community. It's obvious that thought never crossed the current management's mind. The above was from: Posted by: Julia K. at January 28, 2005 04:54 PM i was at the rally today and it was crazy cold. it was good to see a good amount of people but it couldve been better. i tihnk the announcement about the rally saying only members of organizations and council members had an impact. people were confused whether they were allowed to go or not. anyway, it is great seeing us as a community stand up and voice ourselves. i am hoping that this issue will not die out and the anger most of us feel will not fade away until the whole crew is fired (minus miss info). their "suspension" is just a paid vacation hoping that after a few weeks, the issue will die out. i am hoping that if thats what they think, we will come out even stronger than today. lets not give up until we see what they deserve. yes, we may seem like we are winning right now but it aint over yet. if they are back in the air, we should come up with a rally in advance, so people can set up their schedule free and people all over the US can come down and come out stronger than ever. its about time us asians voice out. fuck, just thinking about it again makes me pissed. and that convo with todd, hes retarded. that fucker should go choke on a banana or something. all these people are too low class with lack of education. i say the money that were taken out from their paychecks should go towards their education rather than the tsunami. donating to the tsunami if they dont intend to really help is crap. it means nothing. Posted by: what at January 28, 2005 07:13 PM To STFU: First, it's really obvious which replies are coming from inside Hot, so don't think you've been fooling anybody with those posts about the size of the protests, etc. Second, it is very unfortunate that so many staff at Hot 97 are negatively affected by this. But the fault for that lies entirely with Hot 97 as an institution, it is they who have made all of their employees suffer by failing to handle this situation responsibly. So if you are unhappy with how this worked out, you should seek to hold Hot 97's management accountable, instead of wasting time trying to kill the messenger. Posted by: blah at January 28, 2005 07:22 PM Jay, have you been able to verify if what he posted was true? Another point, Jay, you said something very poignant. If you work for a company, which is reckless and offensive, how long would it take you to understand the possibility things may get "out of control"? Don't blame people for defending their right to complain. WE own that station. Listeners give them the sponsors who give them the money. The station is responsible to its listeners and the listeners have finally said enough! If you want my ear, put something on the air that's not going to offend me. Posted by: Alex at January 28, 2005 07:31 PM Protest over Hot 97 DJ January 28, 2005, 7:00 PM EST Despite Friday's freezing weather, hip-hop station Hot 97 got plenty of heat from angry protesters. The station, WQHT 97.1-FM, has been under fire for airing a song that mocked tsunami victims and referred to Asians in racist terms. The morning show host Miss Jones and her team, who played the song, were suspended indefinitely, but critics want them fired. Just before 11 a.m., a shivering but determined crowd of about 200 gathered outside Hot 97's offices on Hudson Street in Manhattan for one hour. Bolstered by speeches from New York City council members, assemblymen and Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the crowd held signs denouncing the station and chanted, "Hey hey, ho ho, Miss Jones has got to go." "She needs to be fired," said Rebecca Moy, a Bryn Mawr student who bussed in from Philadelphia with six friends to attend the rally. "We wanted to let Hot 97 know that they're not just heard in New York City, they have an impact on the East Coast and communities in general." The backlash against the song initially came from Asian community groups, but members of the NAACP and the African-American community also appeared Friday. "I represent a constituency of immigrants in New York city that is totally outraged by what this station has done," said Brooklyn councilwoman Yvette Clark. "I believe in hip hop," she added. "What they did is dehumanize the whole hip-hop movement." Clark also encouraged the crowd to "flip the switch," alluding to the slogan of a rival hip-hop station, Power 105.1. A growing number of companies, including Coca-Cola and Toyota, are pulling or minimizing their advertising on Hot 97. Newsday is a Hot 97 advertiser. Hot 97 said in a statement that the salaries of Miss Jones and the morning show crew will be donated to tsunami relief efforts "for the duration of this suspension." Copyright © 2005, Newsday, Inc. Posted by: e at January 28, 2005 07:38 PM Posted by: more photos from newsday at January 28, 2005 07:38 PM What did Hot 97 staff expect? That they could continue to hide behind Hot 97's walls, sitting comfortably behind the mic, making derogatory, racist, and insensitive statements and the general public wouldn't say anything? People gave up their mornings to stand in the COLD so they could voice their opinion. Don't make it sound like Hot 97 staff is anywhere as devastasted as the Tsunami-hit regions. Are you that short-sighted? You're trying to say Hot 97 staff is being unfairly treated? Why don't you write every organization that's helping with the Tsunami relief effort about how Hot 97 is suffering? Write the Red Cross, write the UN, write *any* organization currently donating time and money to the Tsunami relief effort. Tell them how Hot 97 is suffering for creating a mockery of one of the greatest natural disasters of our time. Tell them how a handful of Hot 97 staff shouldn't be punished for ridiculing the deaths of possibly a QUARTER MILLION PEOPLE. If you're so damn sure you don't deserve this punishment, why don't you make a song that parodies the Holocaust during this week when nations are marking the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp? See if you don't get the same type of public outrage. What's truly sad is Hot 97 staff is STILL thinking about themselves. They're NOT listening to the public. They STILL think they're the victims.
