January 29, 2005WBAI Radio Special Tonight, Hot 97 Rally PhotosJoin us tonight at Midnight EST, for special edition our radio show the Underground Railroad. You can hear us online here, or on WBAI 99.5 FM if you live in the tri-state area. We will have a panel of hip-hop artists and activists discussing the Hot 97 controversy, including DJ Kuttin Kandi, Rosa Clemente, Immortal Technique, and more (possibly Jin over the phone). We'll also deliver some music to remind you how hip-hop can uplift instead of denigrate. And I hate to bring a commerical interruption but we are in our fundraising drive at WBAI, which is a completely listener supported, non-commercial station, devoted to giving a voice to the voiceless, using the radio to speak out against bigotry and injustice. So any amount you can call up and pledge during our show will be greatly appreciated! But either way please tune in, and come talk to us live in the chat room. ------------ In the meantime here are some of my photos from yesterday's rally at Hot 97's studios:

as dead prez said this shit is bigger than HIP HOP..keep fighting the war against racism. Posted by: spieone at January 29, 2005 09:39 PM hiphopmusic speaks the truth Posted by: Steve at January 29, 2005 09:58 PM Some people have asked after the rally what is the next target? I think the target is the same but need to be better defined. We've all been going after the DJ's, but you know they were just the messangers. Some people have said that we're going on a crusade to crucify the DJs, but I think it seems like that because on the surface they look like the ones responsible. I agree that they share some responsibility because they should have known better and should have said something. In fact I think they should have made a public statement independently from the radio station. But my stance on the situation has been the same since the beginning, I think the people who are responsible should be brought to account for their actions. This includes executives at HOT97. So I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in, I think regardless of what happens with the DJs we shouldn't let up until HOT97/Emmis are held responsible. Don't let them throw their DJs at us as scapegoates, there must be other who share in the responsiblity but who aren't in the spotlight. Posted by: Ming at January 29, 2005 09:59 PM okay first of all, i'm loving those signs & pictures my asian people be holding up. fo'sho. i don't know why these dumbasses be making this "tsunami song" up. i see fuckin white & blacks over in thailand & shit helpin these poor people out. don't these bitches have any feelings? i would like to see how todd lynn would fuckin feel if that bitch was in one of their fucking shoes. shiet; thats horrifying. then listening to all these people in the united states fucking make a damn song up about him, losing a kid, his damn wife in a fucking tree. and then i would also wonder what the damn bitch "miss jones" how that bitch would feel if her kid was missing, and she was dying, and her kid was sent to slavery and shit. these people are a waste of space on this fuckin earth. were all fucking humans, just different race, and different language, we all got hands, legs, and a brain to think right? yes but wrong. only "miss jones, todd lynn" and their damn crew has everything like everyone else except for their damn brains. Posted by: June at January 29, 2005 10:18 PM Good stuff J. Thanks for keeping us updated. Karma, what goes around comes around. Esp. to Miss Jones, this isn't her first time putting down asians on live radio. I heard her the first time when she did it in Philly on 103.9, what's worst is callers were joining in like that shit was funny. Putting down an ethnic group is one thing, mocking the deaths of 200,000+ is on a whole new ignorant level. Posted by: philly chick at January 29, 2005 11:16 PM READ THIS POST. WON'T BE DISSAPPOINTED. I'M NOT not NOT AN IDIOT! Ok, alot of people who use this message board should stop entering messages and read what intelligent people have to say. It's not funny that you bring up the fact that Todd Lynn can't spell "through/(threw)." It wasn't a formal thing so stfu bout that and have something worthy to add, Todd Lynn is not funny and neither are you. Next, it doesn't help when you can't use any of the "there/their/they're" forms. Pick up a book assholes. AND STOP SAYING STUFF EVERYBODY KNOWS!!! Do not repeat lyrics, we know them, do not say how many people died, we know that, do not say it was fucked up, we know that TOO. PLEASE ADD SOMETHING WORTHY OR DO NOT SAY ANYTHING AT ALL!! If you continue to read, you probaly never have to read another post. 1) What they did and said was wrong! And if you stuck around long enough, a final note from me. I'm dissapointed in the HOT 97 crew and the programmers there (as in over there, not they are) but its more disappointing to see stupid fucken racists idiots here. There (again, correct usage) are more stupid people in this world than you can imagine, never get too worked up about it, ot doesn't do anyone any good. Do whatever you feel is necessary for you and your friends and neighbors and family. Thats a good start. Running around calling each other names is not. P.S., alot of people here are fucken retarts.

Bitches like you give us Asians a bad name...you fucking loser. Posted by: Someone Kill Kenny at January 30, 2005 01:54 AM If only spelling was the least of Todd Lynn's problems. I'm sure he wishes it was. I will not sit behind my computer and pretend to know how punishment should be exacted upon him. I do not think he should hold any job in the media, but to some extent, that does not seem to be enough. Has someone told him what happened? Have people filled him in on how many people vehemently hate him and why? (I do not hate Todd, but I will let the posts from drior days speak for themselves) Has he learned anything from his actions? Does he feel wronged by the show's producers and execs at Emmis? I hope he has some answers for himself so that he can pass his new found wisdom onto other young aspiring DJ's and comedians not to make the same mistakes he has. I will pray for him and Miss Jones Posted by: AFRO-NYC at January 30, 2005 02:07 AM Awesome show Jay! The interviews and dialogue were wonderful. YOU need to get all your info straight..And he's doin much more than you'll prollie ever do for us Asians... you're pathetic... Posted by: HATING on KENNY at January 30, 2005 02:35 AM Kenny, see the thing about this is... if you are going to start correcting people on their spelling, then you have to make sure, your's is on point. (retart - retard) Now, people should pull Todd Lynn up. Why?. Todd Lynn is a celebrity. Y list celebrity, bnut one all the same, as such he is ALWAYS ON Do you see how stupidity follows this man?. Now I'll say this again, what about the Africans that they made fun of?. You see this is the problem, no one wants to deal with that, because if you add that to the mix, then these fools were not just being racist. Besides, it seems a free for all to Bash Africans. people keep coming on this board saying 'oh how would you feel if we used the 'N' word. You see it doesn't, and most people don't care. Because it doesn't fit the agenda. Personally, I like an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. If God were vengeful, he would isolate these fools and send a personal tsunami to them in order to wipe out their family and leave just these hosts standing. We all have a life to live so let's drop the protesting and lets go to work. Why are all the Chinese people so mad. I don't get it. Dude...Todd said he was going to start shooting "ASIANS" not China-mens. So dudes...let the guy have a breath of fresh air. But it's all good. Posted by: Mia at January 30, 2005 10:46 AM Mia...Like Dude, really tho. How many time do I opppps...I mean..TODD got to say that he's sorry before you decide to forgive him. Do you want to go as far as killing his KIDS? That's what you're going to do if he get's fired. Dude..Mia..Can we all get along. Dude..How was my comments derogatory. Dude I don't get it. Let me take you out for a cup of yahoo and we'll talk about the racist issues. DUDEEEEE! Posted by: I'm Not TODD!!! at January 30, 2005 10:56 AM For the record...I'm not "ASIANS". I"m Chinese. Posted by: I'm Not TODD!!! at January 30, 2005 10:58 AM Although the majority that are upset over this are Chinese, people are recognizing that its a bigger issue. People of all ages and ethnicity are speaking out against this. The few that do support Miss jones and call it free speech need to remember that free speech or not, you WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHAT YOU SAY. Also, we all have the right to voice our opinions about this. But just practice what you preach. Getting racist on Jones and Lynn is only going to work against us in the end. It just shows that we're only concerned about the raciest remarks against Asians rather than rasicm and prejudice against anyone. I'm Chinese and I was sick to my stomache when I read the lyrics, and I want something done about it. But reading these racial remarks on these posts makes me cringe as well. Posted by: D at January 30, 2005 11:58 AM Also, we need to send a message to Hot 97 that they cant put a price on 200,000 deaths or racism. They're effort to donate the team's pay for the duration of the suspension sounds like a settlement- they're trying to pay their way out. I DONT THINK SO! Posted by: D at January 30, 2005 12:14 PM I think there are still some major people getting away. Let find out who produced the song and who owns the show. They deserve just as much heat, if not more. They are hiding behind corporate actors. I want to see who produces and sits behind the scenes say "HA HA HA look at those N*ggers and Ch*nks battle it out." If Ms. Jones and her crew is fired, the force that inspired them lives on. More people need to be held responsible. Personally, I think the hate needs to stop. Ms Jones goal was to start a black vs asian thing from the get go. She wanted people to call in and jokes at the Asians. No one did. That shows that black people are not trying to hate on asians. My girlfriend is Chinese. So, I will not stand for this Sh*t. Just use your heads. Don't let hate filled Ms. Jones turn you into her and Todd. Posted by: Black Guy from Chicago at January 30, 2005 12:42 PM i never said YOUR comment was derogatory. haha..your shit makes me laugh Posted by: Mia at January 30, 2005 01:25 PM yeah..that last comment was directed towards "I'm Not TODD!!!!" For the record...I'm not "ASIANS". I"m Chinese the difference is? Posted by: Mia at January 30, 2005 01:27 PM Will there be future protest/rally? Posted by: PissedOff@hot97.com at January 30, 2005 02:08 PM Can we please stop making sub-issues? Like I'm not Asian, I'm Chinese. Or Blacks VS Asians. Or Todd Lynn deserves this, or Todd Lynn deserves that. This is why this is NOT going anywhere. Well, anywhere far. Obviously, we've trailed from the real issue here. It's BIGGER than the Asian community. It's BIGGER than a race war. It's BIGGER than Todd Lynn (no pun intended). And if you expect me to tell you what it is, then you need to open your eyes and fight for what the real struggle is. In other words, put your personal drama aside and get up and do somethin' that needs to be done. Posted by: Love Advocate at January 30, 2005 02:12 PM "Why are Chinese people getting upset?" It's like someone saying the word "nigger" and then saying "I'm gonna shot some Africans" and some black guy getting offended. If it really is past your brain power to see how that can upset someone, then I feel bad for you. One thing I noticed from this whole fiasco is how embarrased I get sometimes for being Asian. Some of the posts on this site by Asians make me cringe just as I'm sure many blacks cringed when they heard the Hot97 show. This IS NOT about Asians vs Blacks. This is not about AzIaN pRYDe (for the love of god, do NOT spell it that way or use the alternating caps). Do not try to talk internet street and act at all hardcore. Seeing this stuff just sends chills down my spine. Yes the DJs were black, but the only thing important about that is since they are also a minority they should know how racism affects people negatively. Otherwise it doesn't matter. They don't represent their entire race. You can see from this web page alone that there are plenty of blacks that crusade against racism (and I thank them for it). Being black does not immediately exclude them from being not racist either. This is about three major things. The first is how the staff of the radio show are racist. There's no doubt that they were slinging anti-Asian racism on their show. By Miss Jones' exchange with Miss Info, it's obvious Miss Jones has bought into the "model minority" myth (such a "good" minority that they might as well not be considered a minority) and feels that racism against Asians is acceptable because of that. But while Asians are prevalent in higher education, we're still a smaller minority by far than blacks. We still get discriminated against like crazy. We still suffer through racism. We just do not have a political voice as powerful so we're forced to just suck it up most of the time. Second, these people have no decency to human suffering. It's not really funny mocking 200,000 deaths. And then mocking children's suffering? Very funny. And would most people believe that black DJs would find the issue of being sold into SLAVERY funny? I wouldn't have thought so, but I guess I was wrong. Finally, their superiors are money grubbing enough to resort to these tactics to hope to gain more viewership as evidenced by it being on the air AND as evidenced by the fact that they wanted to just give out a very weak "public" punishment. If the producers did not approve and probably sanction such an event Miss Jones and Todd Lynn would have been fired on the spot. See all the recent controversial things that snuck up on the air. Instant dismissal. Why not dismiss them even though they're losing sponsors? Probably because this was given their blessings. So again, the only issues important here are Posted by: ugh at January 30, 2005 02:15 PM great photos. Posted by: anne at January 30, 2005 02:42 PM As a proud asian, I for one don't condone any racial comments...including the ignorant comments a few asians have left. I hope everyone reading any offensive comments made by any asian is strictly their opinion and does not reflect asians as a whole and vice versa. Just because a person of color was racist and ignorant, does not paint the picture for every other person of color also. It also does not give asians the right to also become racial and insult and generalize every other person of color because of the 2 idiots on Hot97. Insulting them and making racial comments makes us no different and in some ways makes asians looks like hypocrites to be crying over racial comments yet at the same time, making racial comments in return to express ourselves. It's a shame that Miss Jones had to seek so low as to get ratings and a cheap laugh. Not only was the song offensive but her comment to Miss Info, "you feel superior, probably because you're Asian." in my eyes proves that she's racist and that she knew about the content of "The Tsunami Song" in advance. Anything she says after the fact are just lame attempts to keep her job. A job which I hope she loses. She's obviously defending herself and making up poor excuses just like the excuse she gave for running "The Tsunami Song" over and over again throughout the week in the first place. Speaks alot about her character and integrity...of which she has neither. Posted by: Mandy at January 30, 2005 02:44 PM Ditto the last message only from black guy from chicago: Although Ms. Jones and Mr. Lynn permitted themselves to be used as lapdogs of the brains behind racial diviseness, and deserve to be fired for that reason alone, there are far more profound economic interests using black economic anger as racist fodder, and those economic interests should be explored, outed to the public, and arbitrated by the people they hurt, including me (married to a Sri Lankan, whose entire birth family is in Sri Lanka, for 26 years). Hot 97’s morning show sought to build on racial deviseness that has reared its ugly stupid head in chinese delivery man bashing for the last two years. I think the whimpy coverage in the mainstream media counts for nothing. I have seen no meaningful discussion of what went on for a week on Hot 97 in the mainstream media, although I have read the, as usual, superficial statements in the NY Daily News, NY Post, NY Newsday, which mostly just copied shit from AP and Reuters.. Perhaps more effective voices are needed in the asian new york community, too, since the organization that announced the demonstration proceeded to let one of its members shoot it in the foot. The sole reason that I didn't attend the demonstration on Friday was that there was a clear statement made that only student activists and members of established Asian rights groups were welcome. (Student organizations and activist asian organizations were invited to communicate, while anyone else who attended the demonstration “may” be turned away; I am quite certain that’s why there were 100 people there instead of 10,000.) I look forward to the next demonstration when the rest of us can attend and express our views, particularly against Emmis Communications, and the interests represented by them. Posted by: Say it like it is at January 30, 2005 04:05 PM Loretta, What I said was, established members of asian organizations or student activists; that others would be turned away. I want you to tell me when there is a legitimate demonstration that working people can attend. I listed to the f-up tsunami song, and to jin's response multiple times. I do not believe in coincidences, such that Japan became China's penultimate trading partner, and that China suddenly lost faith in the dollars. People like Ms. Jones and Mr. Lynn have permitted themselves to be used to destroy the context of indulgence for individuality that my generation was devoted to. Beyond my grievance with the husband, I resent the context of discord they have created in New York, a context that my grandmothers worked all their lives to create. It doesn;t cost interlopers anything until we make it clear what it cost them. Keep the faith, and peace. Posted by: loretta at January 31, 2005 12:22 AM It's not like radio personalities have never objected, on air, to the crap they're forced to play (and still kept their job afterwards). But they defended the playing of the song, even resorting to more racism to justify it. So they deserve to be fired. As far as the first ammendment right to free speech, that is not the issue here. Nobody is trying to take away Miss Jones's freedom of speech. We are just trying to remove her disgusting opinions and sense of humor from our airwaves by getting the people paying for her little platform to stop doing so. "Profane material is defined as including language that denotes certain of those personally reviling epithets naturally tending to provoke violent resentment or denoting language so grossly offensive to members of the public who actually hear it as to amount to a nuisance. Like indecency, profane speech is prohibited on broadcast radio and television between 6am and 10pm" Hey look at that, profanity is prohibited between 6AM and 10PM, exactly the time of HOT97's morning show. Make sure to make reference to the fact that you believe HOT97's broadcast fits the definition of profanity. Posted by: ian at January 31, 2005 11:43 AM As an informed insider??? Give me a fucking break. That email in the previous link is full of shit. Just more 'spin' from the people who have made it a point to hate on asians. Listen to prior broadcasts where jones has came at info on the asian tip. Reality is that there's a lot of discussion going on behind the scenes and just as jones states constantly on the air.. It's her show. Listen to the most recent arguement where she directs info to only read the celebrity drama stories she tells her too. Sounds like she running the show up there just as much as the producer. Also.. Neglected to be mentioned in the email from the 'informed insider'.. Todd lynn is also singing on the song. If you've been listening to the show since miss Jones came on, after they fired Donnell for not kissing jone's ass, you'll see it's become the miss jones in the morning show featuring Todd Lynn. Don't believe the bullshit. Especially not the email in that post that probably came from Miss Jones herself. Posted by: __ at January 31, 2005 11:56 AM Hey, the pics are nice..too bad I wasn't there. For the girl standing there holding a sign for miss jones..she must not know what's going on..miss jones does not "drop it like it's hot" I mean, if you can agree with heartless people about making of fun of thousands of children dying, there's something WRONG with you.. You can find them at: www.MuckItTees.com Posted by: Mike at January 31, 2005 12:44 PM Todd Lynn said the same thing on trickology.com, that the producer wrote it. It may explain why the n-word isn't used in the song, since the producer is a latino writing a piece for a "black" radio station, and he probably would have caught immediate flak for that. But like I said above, Miss Jones could have said plenty of things on-air to show that she did not think well of the song, even if she was "forced" to play it on the show. Instead she defended her right to play the song as her freedom of speech. Seriously though, there has been no news on Delgado. Do we even know that he's not producing the fill-in Morning Show? This guy has seriously got to go... HHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE MISS ME Posted by: JusticeJiang at February 1, 2005 12:10 PM Wow! I cannot believe what I’m reading on this board. It seems, a tasteless radio station has every one attacking each other instead of the actual problem and issue. The object is one thing guys. Stop the hate! Every one has the right to free speech, but that is not an excuse to be empty-headed, misinformed, attacking each other, and forget what this board is here for. Misspelled words, formal English, who cares. The point went across no matter which forms you use. I strongly believe that the radio station should be under new management. The ones against the garbage that started the whole thing should remain employed. As far as the others go, I can care less. That is one radio-station that should be deleted from saved stations. For what I’ve gathered from the radio station, mainly are a bunch of immature people that does nothing for young people but mold them into high class buffoon and copy cats trying to be like something they can’t be or don’t even understand what life is all about. Clearly, everything about the station “in my opinion” is nothing but tasteless. On my tasteless days, don’t want to think days, down and don’t want to listen to something that makes sense days, don’t want to listen to a radio station which will make me think days, are the only time I listen to this radio station and that is the honest truth. However, they do get their credits or pay on airtime because I listen to them, but no more. Guys, don’t bash each other and forget what we are all here for. I’m sure who ever come up with the idea of this board, does not intend for it to be “hate each other” board. Don’t make this an excuse to show more hate towards each other. Stick to the issue. Furthermore, the horrific experience was not just in one place…Read: South Asia and East Africa. People were killed by the earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, in India, in Thailand, in Somalia, in Maldives, in Malaysia, in Myanmar, in Tanzania, in Seychelles, in Bangladesh and in Kenya. Tsunamis caused damage in Madagascar and Mauritius and also occurred in Mozambique, South Africa, Australia and Antarctica. The tsunami crossed into the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and was recorded in New Zealand and along the west and east coasts of South and North America. The earthquake was felt (VIII) at Banda Aceh and (V) at Medan, Sumatra and (II-IV) in parts of Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Subsidence and landslides were observed in Sumatra. A mud volcano near Baratang, Andaman Islands began erupting on December 28. (last updated 01/26/05)
Posted by: Nina at February 1, 2005 03:14 PM Oh! and one more thing. What concerns me the most is that the radio station crew does not realize that their listeners are more than African Americans. It seems, they don't realize that a lot of their listeners are from a wide range of ethnic background. So, puerile, childish, immature they are. I hope they loose all of their listeners… Posted by: Nina at February 1, 2005 03:44 PM people are made fun of publicly everyday, natural disasters like the tsunami aint funny if its a movie then its a different story then its okay to imagine it happening and laughing or profiting from it , race doesn't matter..american media has proved this, they should not be fired noone was actually a target it didnt just happen to asians anyway!...the racism is not including the other victims of natural disasters even in florida...make fun of that!
