Vibe on Domestic Violence in Hip-hop
Sasha has PDF-ed up the Elizabeth Mendez Berry article that everyone's talking about, and it's well worth the hype. Rarely has hip-hop journalism been so real, or so chilling:
Love Hurts
Before going to sleep, many little girls pray for a new Barbie, an X-Box game or a trip to Disney World. At age 7, Vanessa Rios asked only that "Papi would stop hitting Mami."
It was May 1999, and Vanessa was staying with her aunt, Penelope Rios Santiago, in Miami. After Santiago overheard her niece's bedtime prayer, she confronted her brother, Christopher Rios. His reaction? It wasn't true, he said.
Thoguh he had much in common with other abusers, Christopher Rios was also different: He was Big Pun, a famous rap star. He first met his wife, Liza, when she was 16, and over the course of their 10 year relationship, she claims he sent her to the hospital three times and prevented her from seeking needed medical attention on many other occasions. "One time he told me to change the batteries in his beeper," says Liza Rios, now 31. "I totally forgot about it, and he took this lead pipe and started swinging on me. I had my daughter in my arms, and I told Cuban [Link, who was there] to take the baby. After he finished beating me, my elbow was twisted out of place. I was limping for two months..."

Damn! That's pscyho! A lead pipe?!? Like wtf? Can't believe that sh-t! And it sickens me to the bone when its an artist you admire so much. It's bad enough that even some rappers who I really enjoy listening to glorify stuff like this even if they (?claim they) don't do it but damn .. that's painful to hear. I still don't wish death on the big guy but these guys should all know better.

Im going to respnd more to John than to the story to start off. Who are you to celebrate the death of ANY person. That is a classless statement and I hope and pray that it was said out of anger and without any forethought.
That said, This is a terrable thing to hear about but it does show those that we call our heros in one aspect of their lifes are still human beings and subject to not life up to our collective standards

In the Big Pun DVD, his wife talks about how Pun beat her. I was shocked, they even had video footage of Pun's abuse. The dvd was good but it struck me as odd the way it ended.

Man, that's a depressing read. I've been wondering about this myself lately, how much it can affect you to have so much mysogyny in your pop culture growing up, getting in debates on okayplayer with people about it. Not like this article establishes an iron-clad link by any means, and obviously it's a lot more likely to affect you personally if you actually see daddy slapping mommy when you're growing up, but still. It's sad that people feel it's more important to protect the "legacies" of BIG and Pun than shed light on something that's tearing families apart.

For some perspective, try and get a hold of Pearl Cleage's article, "Mad at Miles" (I think it was republished in a book of the same name).
Basically, she details her struggle with loving the music of Miles Davis while coming to grips with the fact that he was violent towards the women in his life.
I think the Vibe article was both timely and needed. No one, woman or man (yes, abuse does happen to men), in an intimate relationship deserves to ever be hit by anyone. Being a star or your legacy should not ever shield you from being accountable for that kind of behavior. One question that people should ask is: did anyone else around an artist know what was going on and did they ever try to stop it? Did they try to get the abuser some help? Or were they too caught up in the image and fantasy to really take a hard look at what was going down in front of them?

What can you expect?
He was a man who went through his share of spit. Like any man growing without the proper guidance or outlet, abuse will often be the result. Take away his stardom, stage name, and money, he's still Chris Rios from the Bronx who isn't all to bright when it comes to dealing with his anger. Unfortunately, Mrs. Rios and their children had to go through it. I hope that she was able to get help for the family, herself and her relationship with Chris. I would like to think that their last memories of him are not filled with hatred.
It's like a child who is beat by her parents: you either hate them forever or forgive 'em when you mature.
And yes, Pun was the greatest; his skills with lyrical content can hardly be compared to. I as an idol, aspiring writer, was robbed of watching him as an artist and his art develop.
