We have free healthcare! Our schools are legitimate!
Kardinal Offishal's defiant hometown pride on this freestyle is so infectious, when I play it I have to pretend I'm from Toronto too, so I can join in and pump my fist like WHAT!
That right there is perfect hip-hop to me, that yearning to feel part of a community, to be a part of something bigger than ourselves.. and to have that bigger thing be recognized and respected, to be able to take pride in it.. that's the need that hip-hop literally was born to fulfill (birthed by those who'd been stripped of everything that could provide such a foundation, as Jeff and many others have broken down.) I love this track cuz Kardi's passion in repping T-Dot captures that spirit perfectly.

jessssssssssssssss... i was hoping you'd say something about this ;)
so when are you comin to visit, Jay? seriously. there are a lot of people i'd love to introduce you to here, and vice versa.

and another thing - i'm not sure it's a freestyle. i was under the impression that he was just spittin over a dubplate.
i figured this was his response to all the petty garbage and beef that's been going down in Toronto lately...

now that was a satisfying post.
susana-in at least mixtape vernacular that most definitely was a freestyle. i.e. somewhere between a fully formulated song and off the dome.
Posted by: joe at March 31, 2005 10:51 PM
Susana, yes I intentionally use the original definition of "freestyle" as often as possible, just to needle the younger folks. :) I don't think it was off the top.
Posted by: Jay Smooth at April 1, 2005 05:05 AM
Jay, you're right this thing is infectious.
i think what makes this freestyle/dubplate
stand out is that it focuses on the collective instead of dropping lyrics to prove how dope he is. From the delivery and the quotables, it's pretty obvious Kardinal doesn't need to prove this at all.

Jay-- thanks so much for putting this up. Joe-- thanks for letting me know. I'm from Toronto and it's different up there. Kardi reps it right. I really wish we never got that BET.

Okay, free healthcare is great. But, what's not mentioned and what most Canadians don't understand is that we have a choice of who we want providing our healthcare. If we don't like a doctor's opinion or just want to get a second one, we can. Unfortunately, in Canada you have to go with the doctor and/or hospital that your government tells you too. And it's illegal for you to step outside of those bounds. That's what should be in a hip-hop record because that's what's real.
Posted by: just2much at April 4, 2005 05:35 PM
"Unfortunately, in Canada you have to go with the doctor and/or hospital that your government tells you too."
Who told you this? I must be living in a different Canada...
Posted by: Susana at April 4, 2005 07:00 PM
just2much: i don't know if you are right or wrong about canada. but you are certainly wrong about america. the republicans must have gotten to you with that whole ownership society thing. only 2/3rds of americans even have healthcare (i'm approximating here). so about 1 of every 3 americans has one choice: the emergency room. of those that have health care, many are either elderly or covered by social security benefits (gasp) and have medicare or medicaid, both of which are HMOs (health management organizations). Many other people who have health insurance through work are also covered by HMOs. What that means is the HMO tells their customers that they can only visit certain "in network" doctors. and HMOs will not cover for everything; they don't always pay for 2nd opionions, and they only pay a fixed fee. so if a doctors fee is too big, too bad for them they only collect a portion. consequently, at least at the hospital where I work, many of the best doctors refuse to be "in network," don't see patients covered by HMOs, thus depriving these patients of the best health care.
As health care costs continue to rise, more people will go uninsured, fewer people will be employed due to the cost of providing insurance for full time employees, fewer doctors will see patients on HMOs, and I'm sure there will be further consequences I can't think of.
Of course, rich people will always be able to afford the best health care.
Posted by: Joe at April 4, 2005 10:44 PM
First of all, most working people do not have HMOs. And don't play the party bullshit because I don't belong to any party. I am a human and all I want to do is live and for all humans to have the freedoms to choose and to live free from unnessecary oppression, violence, hatred and abuse whether verbal or physical. You're listening to stats from unreliable news sources, overzealous politicians, and/or ignorant citizens. I've never been rich my entire life and have never belonged to an HMO nor had to go on welfare or Medicaid/Medicare and Social Security has been a joke for the last 20 years and needs to be changed immediately. I do know that they are very limited benefits which need to be either done away with or completely overhauled. Go out to the real world and ask the majority of working people. The majority are willing to pay more to NOT belong to an HMO. Unfortunately most who do belong to an HMO do not understand what they've signed up for. Even more unfortunate is that the rest who've signed up for and HMO are forced to either due to their employer or that is really the amount they can afford. I pay just under $102 a month for my insurance. I have a $1000 deductible. Could I pay less for less reliable healthcare? Yes, I could but I choose not to. I am more than thankful to even have a choice. If you want to check out the truth on Canada, of which is what I have told you, please do so. Ignorance is not bliss. Their healthcare is universal. But, it is not free. It is included in their taxes, which by the way they do have for the working citizens. And they are legally limited to the "networks" that their government has set forth. Remember the old, played out, but truthful saying, "Nothing in life is free." The same rule applies in Canada. If you're not paying for it monetarily, then you're paying for it at least some part of your life, whether mentally, physically, and/or spiritually. A change is going to come, though. Peace.
Posted by: just2much at April 5, 2005 02:35 AM
just2much, I can go to ANY doctor I want to in Calgary all I have to do is drive down the street or call and make an appointment, and its not like our doctors are less trained then the ones in the states so I can find a good one no matter what "network" the government lays out for me. Nothing may be free but most Canadians live longs healthy lives, moreso then many Americans. I'll take the taxs if I can go and have any emergency treated without haveing to worry about the cost later.
Posted by: cale at April 7, 2005 12:44 PM
I never said your doctors there were worse than the ones here in the States. We have bad ones, y'all have bad ones. That's a fact. It's also a fact that if you go outside of the network and get caught, it is a punishable crime in Canada. Check your law books. And you can live your long life. I'll go when I'm meant to go. There's more peace in death than life. Doctors are not there to make us live long lives, they are there to help correct problems in our body when they come up. I don't expect or want the doctor I choose to add years to my life. I expect them to heal me from whatever may be ailing me at that time. I would love to see universal healthcare in America if we will not be bounded by the same restrictions that your system has. I want complete freedom of choice, otherwise forget it. Peace.
Posted by: just2much at April 8, 2005 12:28 AM
just2much,
again - tell me WHO told you this or WHERE you read it exactly. i've gone to doctors in three provinces, and i've never been "punished" by so much as a frown.
give me an exact reference, or at the very least the contact info for your trusted source... i know a lot of Canadian doctors who would be very grateful to know that they've been accessories to "punishable crimes" for so long.
but seriously - don't know know where this hate-on is coming from, but don't be so quick to assert your absolute authority on anything unless you can back that shit up. you don't have to like Canada or any other country other than your own if you like - narrow-mindedness and ignorance are not punishable by law, afterall - but at least tear into us for REAL faults. we've got plenty, so it really shouldn't be too difficult for you. no need to make shit up.
Posted by: susaan at April 11, 2005 12:43 PM
Susaan, don't accuse me of hating anybody. I love Canada. I love all countries. And these facts are coming from a Canadian. My good friend who is now an American citizen. If I knew you, I would gladly give you his information to contact him but as ignorant as you are acting in you comments here on this site, you won't get any information. There is also a great book that you can read, of which I will post the title of here on this site within the next few days. I encourage you to read it and educate yourself about your own system. In the meantime, I wish you Love, Peace and Happiness. One Love.
