Pope Benedict XVI

So, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger is now Pope Benedict XVI. Advance word pegged him as the worst possible choice, so far as any hopes for the church becoming more progressive. I'm gonna go see if there's any good analysis up yet.

Ezra Klein notes these highlights from Ratzinger's Washington Post bio:

He wrote a letter of advice to U.S. bishops on denying communion to politicians who support abortion rights, which some observers viewed as a slam at Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kerry. He publicly cautioned Europe against admitting Turkey to the European Union and wrote a letter to bishops around the world justifying that stand on the grounds that the continent is essentially Christian in nature. In another letter to bishops worldwide, he decried a sort of feminism that makes women "adversaries" of men. ... He is a lightning rod for church liberals who see the hierarchy as reactionary. Ratzinger was active in stamping out liberation theology, with its emphasis on grass-roots activism to fight poverty and its association with Marxist movements.

He once called homosexuality a tendency toward "intrinsic moral evil" and dismissed the uproar over priestly pedophilia in the United States as a "planned campaign" against the church.

I admit to be a bit ingorant on this topic but there is a prophecy that ties the Second to last pope as "short-lived" and also a german. The pope afterwards is supposedly the Antichrist. Anyone got any info on this. Or did I get it twisted?!?

Someone care to put me on or point me to the right direction...

Peace,

Whatever, dude's carrying so much baggage, as is the church, and the College of Cardinals still decide that THIS is the best possible way to go as far as picking the next Pope? C'mon.

There's a reason I've been a very lapsed Catholic for most of my adult life and I feel less and less guilty about it every day with these kind of boneheaded moves by the church.

> asking religion to be rational is irrational

Forgive my ignorance but, why? Of all the choices they could have made, this has got to be one of the worst. You're telling me there wasn't someone else they could have picked who could carry out and rep church teaching and policy as it stands without having a pesky Nazi Youth entry on their resume? That much I would have disagreed with but could have lived with, but this is just too much.

So he was in the nazi youth league, like a lot of germans were when he was young. Does that make him a bad guy? Maybe not. Still, I think it should necissarily exclude him from the papacy. The two should have no ties.

I've never seen so much ignorance. There is something greater at work in the Church, and no one here seems to have eyes to see or ears to hear. It is precisely the poison and lies that you all wish to promote, such as liberal theologies and weak morality, that the Holy Spirit intends to stamp out. Perhaps one day you will all wake up - with open eyes and open ears - and realize that the Truth that is upheld and maintained by the Church, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, could never change and will never change. It is not at all a question as to wether or not the Church will accepted the liberal ideas and theologies of people. She won't. The question is this: will the liberal minded people have and accept the Church?

Posted by: luxmundi at April 21, 2005 01:59 AM

I was listening to a Christian radio station today, and they brought up an interesting point. Why would the world expect the bishops to choose a priest that is not anything but completely devoted to his religion. Sure, that may make him an extremist in the world's eyes...but his job is not to please the world, it is to be a leader of the Catholic church worldwide. Why would they choose a softie for that position?

Would the Green party choose a candidate who was just moderately passionate about Green party issues? Would liberals support a candidate who was pro-choice? It just doesn't make sense. Why would they expect it to be any different for the Catholic church?

I got this excerpt from globe and mail.
"In his memoirs, the new Pope wrote that he was enrolled in the Nazi youth movement against his will when he was 14 in 1941, when membership was compulsory. He said he was soon let out because of his studies for the priesthood.

"Two years later he was drafted into a Nazi anti-aircraft unit as a helper, a common task for teenage boys too young to be soldiers. A year later he was released, only to be sent to the Austrian-Hungarian border to construct tank barriers.

"He deserted the Germany army in May, 1945, and returned to Traunstein — a risky move, since deserters were shot on the spot if caught, or publicly hanged as examples to others.

"When he arrived home, U.S. soldiers took him prisoner and held him in a POW camp for several weeks. Upon his release, he re-entered the seminary."

I have a question, if the Pope was drafted against his will (he was a young teen then), should that be taken against him?

I see last comments are in favour of the pope-the first ones have lost their interest, it's already an old topic, I suppose. Anyway, notice that people have lost the sense of sacred and the transcendental and seem to possess so little knowledge of and respect for a spiritual tradition. That's too bad. There is no need for church in such conditions at all.

You folks that are complaining about the selection of the new pope don't have the faith to deal with it. The Church always gets the pope it needs to lead at the moment. With all the criticism coming before he has done anything tells me the right choice was made. Why should the Catholic Church change its teachings for those who don't accept it to begin with? To not suppert the popular political issues like abortion, gay marriage, euthanasia, female priests and on and on conflicts with the theology of the Catholic Church and if you don't like it stay home or at the very least, start to pray and understand what the purpose of a church is. It is not a popularity game, its about salvation and trying to bring the world to peace with moral clarity and fortitude despite the opposition that prefers relativism or hedonism.

Otherwise you are not a catholic to begin with. Why should they change their traditions and believes to please you. You don't like it, join a different church.

People in the Holy Bible it is noted that when Judas committed suicide the Apostles selected another Apostle which was Matthias(Acts 1:26).
Notice there was no more mentioning of this Apostle any where in the Bible. Look at Luke 11:47-49. Here you see that Jesus Christ will send prophets and apostles not to be voted in but selected by Jesus Christ. How can man ever see the heart of every soul in the world, he can not,but Jesus.

FIRST. THE RELIGION CATHOLIC IS JUST A NAME AND THE POPE IS JUST A NORMAL PERSON AND PLEASE STOP THINKING ABOUT HIM AS A HOLY PERSON BECAUSE HE IS NOT, HE IS JUST A HUMAN, HOWEVER PEOPLE ARE SO EASY TO BRAIN WASH, THAT IF SOMEONE SAID THAT THEY WERE ANGELS AND THAT THEY SO GOD THEY WOULD BELEVE IT. BUT IF YOU REALLY WANT TO FIND OUT A BOUT THE CATHOLICS AND WHO STARTED THE CATHOLIC JUST GO TO THE WEB AND LOOK FOR "CONSTANTINE" AND THEN AFTER THAT LOOK FOR "PAGAN SUN WORSHIP AND CATHOLICISM THE MONSTRANCE and the WAFER GOD" AND THEN AFTER YOU READ YOU DECICDE IF YOU WANT TO FOLLOW THE CATHOLICS, AND IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ JUST BECAREFUL ABOUT YOUR RELIGION AND FOUND OUT ABOUT IT BEFORE YOU BECOME ONE BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO MAKE GOD MAD BEACUSE HE IS A LIVING GOD AND AT THE END OF THE TIME YOU WILL FACE HIM AND THEN REGRET IF YOU WERE BAD.... PLEASE BROTHER REMEMBER BE A GOOD CHRISTIA.... BECAUSE ALL OF US ARE BROTHER AND WE SHOULD HELP EACH OTHER.......

Wow. I know it is definitely wack to go liberal if you're tryin ta keep your religion real. I'm sure this guy's no different than the past pope in this sense. Think about it. Your teachingts are documented in a book, if you believe, you follow. If you reject, doesnt that make you a disbeliever? But then I'm not christian, so you may ignore me anyway.

Posted by: SAKTi at April 25, 2005 02:59 AM

I'd rather withhold judgment first. Wait and see.

I, too, am a little bit fearful of what would happen with an ultra-conservative pope. my fear is that laity would find the church not a living church -- one that's divorced from the realities of the people I am from the philippines and I think that the Church is strong here because of a lot of priests and nuns who are really concerned about everyday realities/issues happening here. But in many ways, it is also not responsive. To my mind, the population issue here should be a big issue but the Church, which is extremely influential, has successfully waylaid government efforts to curb population growth via contraception. Then, we have a Muslim rebellion and the new Pope's views on Muslims have been projected to be biased. Again, the Church here is the one that brings most of the social justice issues to the forefront. And my Muslim friends say that it is the Catholic Chuch that is sympathetic to the problems of Muslims here. So the Muslims here have great love for members of the Catholic Church -- specifically the priests and nuns. A conservative Pope might change all that.

But despite all my fears , I'd like to give the new Pope a chance. Wait and see.

What I am observing is a comment post that doesn't know the full history of Catholicism. Originally it was Emporer Constantine who freed practicing Christians from religious persecution and Catholicsm was made. Catholic is derived from the Latin word "Katholicos". The organized Catholic religion is nothing more than the merging of prior existing pagan ideology and the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Those that follow man(any man) are just sheep. You people are being fed what is known as the Hegelian dialect. You are getting the problem and solution from the same source and we are all caught in the middle not knowing what to think. Does "Divide the sheep to conquer the flock" ring any bell? Sure hope so, cause we're all living, eating, and breathing it. Bless

The name Ratzinger began to intrigue me. I had studied the German language for eight semesters while in school and was nominated by my instructor to receive the gold medal for German language studies. I did a search of dictionaries and Catholic resources such as the Independent Catholic News (2), and I found that the true and original spelling for Ratzinger is not with the letter “Z” but with the letter “S”. Thus, the true way to spell his name is Ratsinger. When we apply the alpha-numeric code of A=6, B=12, C=18 and so on, we find that the name Ratsinger adds up as follows: R=108, A=6, T=120, S=114, I=54, N=84, G=42, E=30, R=108 for a total of 666.

Posted by: joe christian at April 28, 2005 12:39 PM

Benedict XVI, or Joseph Ratzinger joined the Hitler Youth in 1941. At this time he was fourteen, and it was required for all German youth at such an age to do so. However, at this time Ratzinger was currently located in Traunstein. Traunstein is known for having a large group of resistance members. Ratzinger knew of this resistance. And instead of joining it like any other would-be Pope and saint he turned his head to it, declining to join the resistance. In fact, it is a supposition the Hitler Youth is where he wanted to be.

In 1943, Joseph Ratzinger is drafted into the German army anti-aircraft unit. Then, he would be released the following year only to join the Austrian Legion, a group very notorious for brutalizing and murdering others. That's more than quite a resumé for a saint.

Look at it this way, a Pope of the Catholic Church is like the President of the United States, only multiply that on a much greater scale. What do you think the american people would do if we had a president who served in the Hitler Youth, German anti-aircraft unit, and the Austrian Legion? I'll let you be the judge of that.

Furthermore, according to the fairy tale of Christian revelation, Benedict XVI would indeed be the second-to-last Pope. But this next Pope would not, I repeat not be the Antichrist. Let's get that straight, he would be the False Prophet. False Prophet, not the Antichrist.

That's all a crock of baloney! I mean, come on! Give the guy a break! Take a second and think about how he feels! I bet ya'll that he hears all the negative stuff that people say about him, too. I'm only thirteen, but I had to do a report on him (that's what led me to this site) and I took the time to stop and think about how poor Ratzinger feels about this. How would you like it if everyone told you that you were going to bring the end of the world? And if all these media people are BETTING each other how many years it'll take for you to die?? Would you like that?? So, lay off the guy, okay?

It is unbelievable--the numbers of people who are so ignorant of religion and the Catholic Church in particular but suggest that they actually have something to say!
It is also unbelievable--the numbers of so-called Catholics who expect the Church to bend to their wishes because they want affirmation for who they are and don't want direction or suggestion as to who they ought to become. This is largely the result of two generations of "me" types, people who are entirely egocentric. Now they have been disappointed. Of course. Not the last time, either.

Posted by: Duane Lamers at May 8, 2005 11:35 AM

I admit I was not ecstatic when Joseph Ratzinger was announced as the next pope. But I do believe that the Holy Spirit has guided the church for about 2000 years and will continue to do so. As for whether or not Benedict XVI is the last pope or the second to last pope - who knows? The Bible tells us that we do not know the time. Hitler Youth involvement? My parents were German youth at the time of Hitler. You did not have a choice about joining Hitler Youth - that does not make my parents supporters of the Nazi cause. Far from it. I was very nervous about Ratz.'s conservative policies - but then I read about his involvement in the 2nd Vatican Council. He wrote a lot that came out of that, wrote a lot explaining what it means and how to make it work. He directed the translation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Someone pointed out to me that - for the last 20+ years he has been the head of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith. It has been his job to be a hardline traditionalist. He tried to leave that post twice, but JPII would not let him. How many of you have had to do a job that doesn't allow you complete freedom to express your thoughts and ideas? where you have to follow the company policies? Let's give the man a chance. He could have chosen the name Pius, after all - the last two of them were ultraconservative with little vision for progress. Benedict XV at least was a mediator striving for peace during WWI.

Jesus said in the Gospel of Matthew that He did not come to bring peace to the world but a sword. Obviously this is represenative of an ongoing harvest of TRUE christians leading up to and even during the end times. The call for peace was given as a sure sign of the end the world as we know it. Rememeber Revelations (not the one on TV) where it says the people will cry peace, peace and there is no peace. Only Jesus Christ, who is no longer on the cross by the way, can bring peace to a world that has denied him, and a church that has distorted his image just like the Saducees and the Pharisees distorted the image of God in Jesus's day. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

Posted by: joe christian at May 11, 2005 10:45 AM

St. Benedict revitalized the Catholic faith in Europe way back in the day. That's Benedict XVI's goal. As head of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, Ratzinger was a hard core holy man doing his job in upholding 2000 years of tradition. During Vatican II, he said the same things he says now about the faith. HE CAN'T AND WOULDN'T CHANGE THE FAITH!! He wanted to resign so that he would have time to write books on the faith, not so that he wouldn't have to continue upholding the faith. He dedicated his life to upholding that same awesome faith! Sorry, ladies and gentlemen, but the cafeteria is closed! Either you are a Catholic, or you aren't. Benedict is hard core. That means that he's a Catholic, not that he's bad in any way. Praise to the Holy Spirit for giving us such a holy man who will continue teaching the Tradition of the faith!!

Posted by: ubercatholic at May 11, 2005 08:02 PM

There is only ONE Holy ONE. No man is capable of being Holy, righteous yes, Holy no. And get your facts straight about the catholic church, (please note I did not say catholic people, I know alot of catholics that truly love the Lord), the catholic church has compromised the true faith of christianity and continues to do so by absorbing all types of other religions doctrines into their own. They've even gone so far as to embrace the thory of evolution by saying Adam and Eve were some type of lower life forms. Don't believe me, look it up. By the way who do you think the whore or adulterous who is talked about in the book of Revelations is refering too, read it, and if you already have, read it again and then look at the back of the vatican coins. They put her picture on the back of it chalice and all.

Posted by: joe christian at May 12, 2005 03:46 PM

Excuse me, Joe christian? I AM a Catholic. And I KNOW my faith. We have not adopted other doctrine. Have you read the catechism? And who do you think is the whore of babylon? As to Pope Benedict's holiness, no, he is not perfectly holy, or perfectly righteous. Forgive my liberal use of the term, but he beats me out every day. :) The Church has dogma which we have not revoked. Can you give me these all types of other religions and examples that the Church has absorbed? Because according to my readings, the Church is the only one which hasn't embraced these theories of relativism, nihilism, and "I can be inspired by the Holy Spirit to come up with my own interpretation of the Bible" schisms. Oh, and just because man has evolved some does not mean that the Church has embraced the theory of evolution. Can you honestly tell me that men haven't changed at all in a few thousand years? You only have to look at bones from 2 hundred years ago to see that man has evolved to fit his surroundings at least to some degree.

Posted by: ubercatholic at May 13, 2005 12:43 PM

UberCatholic. Roman Catholicism is Baal worship, which is sun worship, and the Romish system is not Christian at all. This is easily proven! In fact, the Vatican hates true Christianity and always has. In a 125 page document written by the "Pontifical Biblical Commission", the Vatican criticized the literal interpretation of the Bible and said, "The fundamentalist approach to the Bible is intellectual suicide and dangerous. It is dangerous because it is attractive to people who look to the Bible for ready answers to the problems of life." This quote was taken from the Mission To Catholics Challenger, Oct., 1997, p.1. There are so many more refernces to validate this claim not to mention the fact that Jesus clearly told us in the end times many would be decieved. And yes I have read the Catechism. However, I have always found that actions speak louder than words. One small fact alone should attest to the avoidance of true Christianity within the Catholic "faith". And that is the ritual of hitting the corpse of a deceased pope on the head with a silver hammer and asking the deceased if they are dead. If this sounds in any way shape or form to be a christian concept or practice you my dear friend have been greatly decieved. And as a matter of fact the Holy Spirit does provide indvidual and personal understanding of God's Holy Word and the true nature of who Christ is in us and who we are in Him. This is taught and shown to be true throughout the New Testament. Your faith should not be rooted in the teachings and ritualistic ideology of any denomination. But in a love that surpasses all knowledge and only Jesus Christ who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life can give. Only through Him can we give this love to others, which was his commandment to us. I pray that the Lord will open your eyes to His message of Love and you will come to understand how far many religions have fallen from this message. As for the Catholic church adopting other relgions into their this is easily researchable if you want to invest the time but it started with the Catholic church's acceptance of pre-existing dates of Roman gods into christianity during the age of the Roman Empire. Jesus was not born on December 25 but a Roman god named Mithra (Mithraism), who existed before Jesus was born, was acknowledged as being born on this date. Catholicism adopted this date as well as others so the Romans would accept their beliefs, but God makes it very clear he does not compromise, it is all or nothing you are either cold or hot, if you are lukewarm he will spit you out of his mouth. Hope that is enough to get you started or at least get you curious. I will be praying for you and please pray for me as well these are very interesting times and only our faith in Him will sustain us.

I think Benedict is evil, Honestly, has anyone bothered to look at the man? His eyes are full of malice, and he has a macabre smile! and not only that, but HIS DAD ABSOLUTELY HATED Nazis. And if Benedict would've hated them as bad as he says he did, he would've DIED before joining the Hitler Youth. And we only have his word to defend him, and that's not really proof, now is it? Not only that, but if Pope John Paul II was saved in 1981 by the Lucia lady, why did he have to die and leave us here with this creepy Nazi Pope?!?!?

I know there is a lot of speculation on whether or not Pope Benedict is the Last Pope or perhaps even the AntiChrist. Pope John Paul II died from septic shock and cardio-circulatory collapse. Rumor has it that an autopsy was conducted (most likely against the will of the Catholic church)and concluded Pope John Paul II had traces of arsenic in his blood and this could be traced back over the past ten years. So, basically someone was poisoning him. Who was it? Maybe someone who was plotting to take his position all along? Who really knows. Perhaps the signs don't point back to Pope B, but one sure can't help but be a skeptic. The guy is down right freaky.

Posted by: QKy at May 6, 2006 12:49 PM

I recently heard some ridiculous speculations that Pope Benedict XVI was the anti-Christ; speculations that are, indeed, underlined by sheer stupidity, utter ignorance and self-righteous prejudices.

This is a “hip-hop” website, so I’d expect the some of the sub-moronic idiots who post here to think, act and reason just like their idols—rap artists, so-called.

The itsy-bitsy amount of reality that all of the said antis possess is astoundingly low! I mean, really: You idiots haven’t even thought about the motivations and reasons as to why the new Pope advocates the policies and ideas that he advocates! Of course, having the ability to comprehend reality is beyond the reach of all you self-righteous antis, particularly because you all have become so disillusioned with the false realities and fantasies set before you; but that’s still no excuse: any person with have a brain in his head should be able to judge reality from falsity, even if he’s leaning towards the falsity in the first place!

One of bird-brained blockhead said that selecting a traditionalist for papacy is foolish, because, in his ignorant fallacies, it would only repel people from the church. What?—that’s stupid! I wouldn’t be attracted to a religious organization that promoted homosexual expansionism; that fulfilled feminists’ ceaselessly self-gratifying need for the temporary expulsion of her own self-righteous, irrational self-pity; that supported the multicultural, multiracial regime which seeks to expel our culture, way of life, language, genetics, religion and practically everything else that defines us! No decent Catholic would support that! All of us normal, straight-thinking Christians want the Pope to lead us; to be a reflection of our values—the true Judeo-Christian morals, ethics and laws; to restore us from the post-Soviet regime; to be rid our countries of secularism, liberalism, leftism and the like. (Of course, the idiot that thinks a traditional pope is a foolish is decision doesn’t dwell in reality, and has no values whatsoever attached to lines of traditionalism, so his own self-righteous idiocy would cause him to never recognize that stuff in the first place).

Some stereotypical retard said that Christianity, or religion in general, is irrational. It takes a rational mind to comprehend, understand or at least get a grasp of the abounding rationality behind the Lord and His teachings; and hence, anyone who cannot see rationality in Christianity and God doesn’t have the intellectual capacity to see the clear and obvious, as it does take rationality to see rationality in the first place. Moreover, the self-righteous, sub-moronic critic can’t think of a way to explain God’s choice of pope, and so he just dismisses it as stupid; and not only that, but he commits a horrible blasphemy by calling God and His religion(s) stupid because of the irrelevance to his false ideals.
