EMP Pop Conference
Being around so many people who have devoted so much time to thinking about music was rewarding in ways I'm not sure how to summarize here. I found myself wanting to experience without recording, whether through notes or photos. (I will get a few pics up later)
So many cool people, all with such passion for ideas, as Oliver said. Invigorating (and humbling) just to absorb that passion itself, along with all the ideas and avenues of thought it has produced..
Our music-blogging panel noted an obvious but crucial fact about blogs: they are made for and by people who spend a lot of time on the internet. Among other reasons, this is relevant because when we look for stuff to write about, we tend to draw from the pool of ideas already documented on the internet.
Which means that no matter how tight your news.google game, is you're working from a very limited palette.. cuz less than 1% of the world's ideas are documented anywhere on the internet (much less whichever 10 sites comprise your daily routine).
So the feast of ideas that EMP laid out was hella inspiring, sparked a hunger to get out there into that world and bring home new colors for the palette.
That said, I'm off to catch up on my 10 sites now. Back with photos and shoutouts later, hopefully.

I'm actually finding less and less music blogs, and specifically hip-hop blogs follow the classic link + commentary model (thank goodness).
A blog was the first place I read about Chamillionaire having beef with Mike Jones. Months later I read about it in the NY Times (props to Kelefa).
A blog was the first place I read a complaint, or even mention of Snoop making a song about domestic violence.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a link+commentary model, many of the best blogs are mostly based on it (like most of the top political blogs, who crush music blogs in influence and readership)
But it's cool to get outside of that pool of info sometimes too.

this was my third emp - and i have to say probably my favorite - i got to meet so many folks this time around - and jay i'm glad i finally got to meet you
and hashim, i'm not against the link+commentary model either - sometimes it just allows issues to breathe all on their own w/out 2 much detailed influence - besides i'm sure people have lives and don't always have the time to treat their blogs like magazines

Yeah, the other side of the coin I flipped above is there's also more information online than any one person could possibly sift through.. so there will always be a use for blogs that do the sifting for you..

if I didnt work a tech job I doubt I'd be updating my blog on a regular basis either....
at home, I stay locked in the studio when I hit the computer....
lots of changes to write while sitting in front of a computer all day though!
I'd like to see your thoughts on all the goings on at the source and if you think they're going to make it or if this is really the last year of the source

There's nothing wrong with the 'link + commentary model', the field just gets oversaturated at some point.
