July 06, 2005Black Rage, White CrowdsI'll probably be sitting on WBAI's morning show tomorrow as they discuss Bakari Kitwana's Voice piece. What was yall's take on that story? What should I ask/talk about? 6/7/05 EDIT: This segment won't be happening now, obviously.. hopefully rescheduled in days to come. Posted by jsmooth995 at July 6, 2005 01:40 PM | TrackBackComments
Hashim wrote a good reply to this article. You might find some items there to discuss. http://www.hiphop-blogs.com/hiphop/2005/06/this_week_hipho.html Posted by: rafi at July 6, 2005 02:13 PM Posted by: rafi at July 6, 2005 02:14 PM Is "Brother" Ali an albino? Damn, that is ironic. Posted by: Joe Grossberg at July 6, 2005 02:42 PM Do they have some way to call in? I would love to call in and ask some questions. Posted by: Hashim at July 6, 2005 05:51 PM on a similar tangent, this is russell simmons quoted in an interview with the Guardian (UK) where hes talking up Def Jam Mobile, and bringing that and his new label to Europe... "In America, 80% of the people who buy hip-hop are not African American," says Simmons. "What's special about hip-hop to me is that it's poor people of all colours - in fact, there aren't enough white rappers; we need poor white kids from the trailer parks talking about their struggle because there's a connection with black kids in the projects." source: http://www.guardian.co.uk/online/news/0,12597,1520994,00.html thsi debate seems similar to arguments I've seen running with O-Dub and Jeff Chang on Asian Americans in hiphop. Hashim - great post. Posted by: peter mac at July 6, 2005 06:20 PM Ok just read both arguments...although I disagree with much of Hashim's hostility I agree on his thoughts on to whom these independent artist marketing too? Why waste our time preaching to the choir? (Easy when the choir purchases all the latest biblical releases.) Are we missing the point? Is "the message" lost when, "the message" today (which in no way can compare to the same degree of consciousness of P.E., Coup being the exception.) falls on the non-black audience whom have nothing to benefit from it? All these points again brings me back to the attention grabber in Bakari's piece: "Welsing also had another, less-known theory, regarding the inferiorization of Black children. Welsing argued that soon white supremacists wouldn't have to worry about making Blacks seem inferior—they'd just need to keep providing them with inferior education, housing, health care, child care, and the like, and in a generation or two they would be. After 15 years of gangstas and bling, perhaps hip-hop's Black audience has been so inundated with material garbage that they don't want an uplifting message?" - stop The problem starts at home and in a disunited community where the concept of togetherness is non existant combined with an inferior educational system and housing we've managed to convert our vicariousness into our hopeful reality. Add the catalyst of a greed driven, large asset producing industry that will continue to push the watered down concepts of materialism and conformity to our youth via the wanksta, pimp, hoes, bling medium it will then become the McLuhanistic message that will in the interim knock us to our knees in a currently crumbling culture. Maybe the only thing able to revert this process is the stance of a well established artist taking the responsibility to their own hands and deciding to risk moving units in hopes of contributing a positive message. Posted by: PezHead at July 6, 2005 11:21 PM P.S. Anyone peep the Kanye West Diamonds from Sierra Leone video? I'm enraged that this song is even considered conscious because of a few choice images that made the video. There are nothing in the lyrics that would merit the title "Diamonds from Sierra Leone". Would anyone not remotely educated or informed be able to tie both the visual images to the title? Is this where an artist can manage to become conscious without risking his "lyrical content"? Where he can moonlight as a psuedo conscious emcee? Ok I'm just venting. Anyone feel me on this? Posted by: PezHed at July 6, 2005 11:37 PM reminds me of mo' better blues argument somehow... Posted by: koko at July 7, 2005 02:42 AM And who are the fans of "non-conscious" rappers? (Or should nI say unconcious. LOL!) I suspect their audience isn't that much different. Posted by: rsull at July 8, 2005 09:46 PM Funny this issue has hit mainstream. Went to a festival here in the UK in 2000 (The Essential Festival Brighton) billed as a black experience. Could count the number of black heads. It was overwhelmingly white. And to think acts such as James Brown, Slum Village, Lady Mambo, Dead Prez, Angie Stone, Luciano, Jah Shaka, local black artists etc came out for this two day event. I and my friends were very disappointed. all 5 of us were the only ones chanting it up for dead prez as far as i could make out. the white crowd was dead quiet. said hello to them afterwards. The only question they had to ask us? "Where are the black people guys?" we here but we ain't hearing no more. bling!!
