As sad as that makes me to hear it, I also understand why Shock G is throwing in the towel. Shock has been through a lot in his career: the first DU album was delayed for a year before "Humpty Dance" hit; his collection of old school hip-hop was destroyed in a fire; he mentored Tupac and watched helplessly as 'Pac became an unwitting martyr for the hip-hop movement; and in 2003, DU was supposed to play a show at the Petersen Automotive Musuem (the spot where Biggie got popped), only to have the two-day festival close down shortly before DU was supposed to take the stage.

A friend of mine had the privelege of playing drums with DU on some recent tours, and his words about Shock's morale didn't bode too well. Thus, I am not suprised at his retirement.

All we can do is hope that one day in the future Shock regains a genuine desire to return to the studio, for the right reasons. Like Miles Davis, who quit playing for a spell because he "couldn't hear the music anymore", maybe this is just an interim phase while Shock spends some time having a life outside of music and its demands.

DU were one of my favorite groups, and I always felt they never got their due. They did a lot for rap, a lot more than people know.

Sounds to me like he needs a breather. If being in the studio is as he says, causing him to do drugs, then no doubt he should come to a place where if he chooses to come back to songwriting then he does so when he can see it as a healthy and enriching process for him and not something that brings him down. And as he says there's always writing. He has a way with words and I'm sure he has plenty of stories to tell.

At a time were hip-hopm music really needs the production skills of Shock G, I am saddened. Two of the greatest producers of our time in my opinion is Shock G and Devante Swing. They have left us with lil john and rkelly how sad.

We met at a P-Funk concert in Battery Park back in '98. You were in the back with this chick Gypsy that I was checkin' out. I didn't know who you were 'til I turned around and you jumped on stage w/ George. We ended up back at your pad (I think near Gramercy?)w/ like 5 or 6 of Gypsy's friends, you, me and my boy Darien. You were jammin' out the Rhoades piano and freestylin, while everybody else was beatin on whatever they could find. Pac's mom called right in the middle of all this chaos. . Then the big box of glasses came out of the closet. We were rollin' 'til like 2 in the afternoon. My boy ended-up pukin' off your balcony! Good times.
