Holy Crap

Unkut.com just dug up one of the reviews I wrote for the Source, back in '91. Yikes! This must be how Lil' Jon feels looking at his high school yearbook photo.

Vance Wright *rapped*? Holy shit.

wow, you wrote "not" in all caps for emphasis! And I won't mention the "on which".

Man, I feel embarrased at blog posts that I wrote just 30 days ago.

"Although there are many heads flown on the album" ... heh.

BTW, here is the Lil Jon yearbook pic for those interested.

Haha, well at that time I was writing the reviews out on looseleaf paper, while I rode down to their office from high school, so I couldn't really italicize or anything like that.. That's pretty funny that they would print it that way.

The "on which" looks fine to me though!

Nice. The most hip-hop writing I did in HS was a letter to the editor of that Tower Records magazine (I forget the name; it was a one-word title and they gave it out for free at the check-out counter) telling Dmitri Ehrlich how Fu-Schnickens was gimmicky but Me Phi Me was truly creative.

Well, I was half-right. :)

Haha.. wow dmitri ehrlich, there's a name I haven't heard in years.. I have a vague memory of not liking his stuff but that could be my old age..

"Me Phi Me was truly creative"

Gotta love Frat-Rap.

At least the Fu-Scnickens were the first group to use kung-fu movie samples. They were no Wu-Tang though with that whole awful "rapping in flying Chinese take-out boxes" thing in the video.

I seem to recall Me Phi Me being touted (by his own people, not rumor-mongers) as the first gay rapper, back at that time? Am I imagining that?

The Fu did get gimmicky I guess, but Chip Fu was and is quite nice on the mic.

Chip Fu rapped so fast that you actually needed to read the lyric sheet to keep up. Ali from Tribe gave them some good beats as well.

Posted by: Robbie at January 3, 2006 05:33 PM

And here I thought 50 Cent was the first gay rapper. ;) Oh man, I kill myself.

Here are some translation, for all you new jacks, of terms used by Jay Smooth...

head bob = head nod

tip = subject matter

bozack = magic stick + 2 crystal balls

Oh yeah, almost forgot... Chip Fu goes nuts on Ali's "Lord Can I Have Mercy", which appeared on Ali's 2004 album, "Shaheedullah & Stereotypes". A lot of people missed that one.

Wow, who would have thought that people remembered Me Phi Me and Fu-Schnickens. Anyhow, the best part of the latter group was that they had a greatest hits album. No, seriously. After two LPs and that Shaq song.
