January 31, 2006MF Grimm "Book of Daniel" (MF Doom Diss Track)I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone post about this track since Spine linked it up. Have y'all listened to this? I thought they had patched things up after reuniting at the BB King show we posted here, but clearly the peace treaty didn't stick. When I read "New MF Grimm track, dissing MF Doom" I expected maybe 1 or 2 lines aimed at the mask, but boy was I wrong. This is straight tell-all memoir (or at least Frey-style "memoir") from beginning to end, especially the third verse.. breaking down so much history between them I start to feel guilty for hearing it. And unlike Cam's diss-fomercial, this one actually has a decent beat under it. My fascination with the thought of an MF Doom answer record may be overridden by a desire to see these two old friends work things out. But maybe we can hear that comeback and then see them patch it up. Posted by jsmooth995 at January 31, 2006 02:32 AMComments
whoa, Grimm is definitely not holding back on this one. but i'm with you, i'd like to see them be friends again, AFTER a comeback track (because the beat on Doom's will most likely be JUMP OFF!). Posted by: Melissa at January 31, 2006 05:45 AM see, i don't know that i would call this a straight diss track. Grimm's expressing a lot of love here, letting a lot of personal weakness shine through. ahh, rap psychology, whatup. Posted by: susana at January 31, 2006 09:37 AM What is the history behind this beef? Posted by: Manuel at January 31, 2006 11:51 AM this reminds me of the diss track Cam made towards Mase. It was personal and kinda sad to hear. Expect Mase to hit back Cam not too long from now. Posted by: Hashim at January 31, 2006 11:52 AM well it is definitly a diss track. but it is more subtle than most. the first two verses and chorus are straight diss. then in the third verse he diggs deeper. i'm also curious about the history of this...anyone got links? Posted by: earwizzle at January 31, 2006 12:37 PM Hashim, I'm pretty sure there's a Mase track floating around right now that is supposed to be a Cam dis. I would've posted it but it's trash and I don't condone the False Profit. I haven't heard this Grimm track but I read the lyrics somewhere and yeah, he def got a little personal... Posted by: eskay at January 31, 2006 12:59 PM ouch - even subroc's name came up... Posted by: konijn at January 31, 2006 01:16 PM decent beat? this ish bumps man. props to crucial. go to the day by day forums for the original post. it premiered on the squeeze radio show and then got added to daybyday myspace page. Posted by: g at January 31, 2006 05:15 PM So what exactly is Doom being accused of? Posted by: i'm the skwidawd at January 31, 2006 08:42 PM how much you want to bet Doom doesnt fire back? Posted by: dubb at January 31, 2006 11:19 PM Wow....I don't want to see an answer back to this...but I do....but then I don't. This is a sad ambigious situation, the community didn't really have to hear all this dirty laundry. Skeletons should be kept in closets. And why pull Doom's file if he's truly fam, just be happy he's gettin his and do you to get yours. There is defenitely more going on here than we are let to hear. Anyways I fished the lyrics and here it goes... The Book Of Daniel [intro - Bashton the Invisible Man] I met this kid he seemed righteous [GRIMM]
[chorus - BASHTON] You can hide behind the mask 2x [MF Mez aka DESTROYAH] Midgets in a trunk [GRIMM] I didnt wanna get at you Doin songs with RZA How could you ever diss M.I.C. What the fuck happened to you man Posted by: Pez at February 1, 2006 12:34 AM It's still not clear whether there is any basis for a legitimate beef. These lyrics could be summed up as "I don't like how you are living your life". But the obvious question is, "What makes Grimm so special?". Last time I checked, Doom -- in spite of what comes off as a hazy, alcoholic demeanor -- has been very successful as independent artist. His career is in many ways a model for other hip hop artists. Grimm is talented too. But if his career advice is so sage, why is Grimm's own career floundering? Maybe Grimm looked at his sagging sales and said, "Damn, I need to start a beef with someone." Posted by: i'm the skwidawd at February 1, 2006 05:12 PM All you need to do is poke around online and see what type of shit DOOM gets up to. Money problems seem to follow this dude around, as in, he never seems to pay people their money. Read Miranda Jane's story of Madvillian and see how peoples could beef with DOOM. Not the first time. Posted by: Business at February 2, 2006 08:15 AM Hey, isn't that the beat from GZA's "Pass the Bone", off of the Words from the Genius album? Seems like that might mean something, considering he is taking a shot at RZA in the song... Posted by: Maverick at February 2, 2006 01:40 PM Wow, there's some real tidbits in MJ's blog. That said, I don't think it is realistic to expect 3rd party A&R residuals when dealing with an independent like Stones Throw. That just seems naive, especially for someone who appears to have a lot of experience in the industry. I guess we can assume that Doom didn't pay Grimm for whatever unspecified project. Posted by: i'm the skwidawd at February 2, 2006 02:38 PM damn, i guess my link didn't work. how do we post links? Posted by: i'm the skwidawd at February 2, 2006 07:11 PM This 'diss track' was really triggered by some lines from El Chuba Nibre on the DangerDoom album 'Once joined a rap group, Midgets Into Crunk 'Midgets Into Crunk' is talking about M.I.C I think 'Book of Daniel' is sposed to be grimms comeback to that ... that and some other issues aswell.but the song does go in to kinda brife detail about hte money issue aswell. 'Zev luv x, used to be merry all of that is about brining the old zev style back i think.. aswell as getting at him got doing track with alot of people he even brings up ghostface and they havent even released that yet... anyway thet get to deep in places on this one Posted by: crazy mo fo at February 3, 2006 10:26 AM sounds like another chapter from fantastic four. must find official handbook of the marvel universe to see what happens next.lol Posted by: rickwhois at February 3, 2006 12:24 PM I think he chose "Book of Daniel" as a diss to 'Daniel Dumile' which is DOOM's real name, and also for some religious undertone in that Doom betrayed MIC like Judas betrayed Jesus. I may be takin that too far...but Doom is a disrespectful guy. Grimm brought him up as a son after doom's bro died-he practically raised the guy. Grimm, who invented the MF Metal Face stuff, gave Doom his name, and now Doom's using it to hide from his past and everyone who ever helped him out. He's an incredibly disrespectful emcee for being so skilled, which makes me kinda hate him and love him at the same time. Posted by: jake at February 4, 2006 12:30 PM Damn....this hurts to read, since I'm a Doom fan, but I can't cosign on him dissing MIC, especially when they're all talented in their own right(check for that album if you don't have it-it's worth the $12, hands down!). I don't see why Doom would take it there; if that's his clique, he should support them if they're on point with their business practices. Considering Doom was homeless at one point trying to do his thing, he owes it to them to at least treat them correct in a business sense. If this doesn't get resolved, I think he's going to lose many a fan over this. Posted by: JT at February 5, 2006 05:30 PM Nothing personal to Pez, but the lyrics to the track are transcribed incorrectly. This happens all the time. Anyway, in this case, it is a significant mistake, because: Incidentally - FOR THOSE ASKING HOW THE BEEF STARTED AND WHY GRIMM DID IT - This is the reason why Grimm even did the track, he even says "I didn't want to get at you, you know this is true" and also "Make peace wit you? Zev I tried to" Doom put MIC's name out there on Danger Doom, which was the last straw in a line of personal disrespect by Doom making it a public disrespect. Why wouldn't Grimm defend his peoples - especially those who are RIP who doing this hiphop stuff meant alot to them? Posted by: truth and skill at February 6, 2006 12:03 AM Yeah, Grimm looked out for him in his time of need(Doom looked out for Grimm too), but that doesn't mean it was every single cat in Monsta Island Czars. There's always a cabal in cliques that hate on one or 2 of it's memebers on the d-low, that's real talk, front like you've never seen it before. These cats, for being his supposed peoples, sure had alot of hate hiding before he even got at them on DangerDoom. They're dishing out alot of dirt which preceeds the time period when the beef started. They had ill feelings towards Doom on the low from the get go. What was the openning to the track?. "Yeeeeeah, him and his brother were reaaaal smart". Word is Bond, if that isn't, "from the get go", then I don't know what is. This is all very sad when it comes down to it. I always liked Grimm and Doom(not too sure about the rest of M.I.C., although I did hear MF Mez on 89.9 that night and he was peace). Posted by: True N Living at February 6, 2006 12:37 PM I looooooove MF Doom a lot, but I think he should really listen to this diss track. Grimm does show a lot of love and stuff, it's not like usual rap beef. I can't really imagine Doom doing a diss track because he's abstract and shit. But I want Doom to win Posted by: Alex Miller at February 6, 2006 10:51 PM Hey yo I alwys been fams And yeah in the scheme of things Im Mf MIC down with grim those words I said I stand behind .YO check for BASHTON The Invizabul Man cause I stand behind what I say and been Mf for twelve years .So fuk that sambo snake ass microchipped bitch.Yall will know the truth but for now Invizabul sneak attacks .Enjoy the chaos. Posted by: SOnny gutters at February 6, 2006 11:08 PM If what I hear is true, then DOOM must act like Viktor Vaughn all the time. Maybe he made his personality split into (basically, and I'm not counting Geedorah or Metal Fingers) Funny Guy and Jerk because that's what he is. Think about it: he bounces around from label to label, burning bridges and collecting cash. Apparently he's schizophrenic about when he acts right and when he doesn't. I've heard just as many stories about him putting MCs on and looking out for people as I have about him skipping out on money promises and killing friendships. Sounds like he's just not predictable, which is cute on record as a character, a villain, but in real life that shit is karma. Posted by: Andrew Matson at February 8, 2006 02:34 PM Yo I dont know shit about this Im just up on M.F. Doom Cause my older cuse was up on him when his bother was still alive and shit. I aint even know about them Monsta Islands but i think i dig this hsit... i didg how the beef got righteousness to it its not on some industry im a bigga killa nigga shit its on wax cause we cut wax but we still real ;people shit. I aint know it was this deep tho...M.F. Posted by: H.U.D.-e- BricC PowerZ at February 9, 2006 12:48 PM Yea, I've always been a big MF Doom fan and I'm big on the history. I'm pretty sure its just some money shit and Doom seriously aint making that much money so he aint really able to pay anyone back. I think Grimm has a reason to be upset but all the dude said was "Midgets into Crunk". Grimms dis is heartfelt at the end but the first two verses are straight hateful shit. It definitely seems like Grimm has been pissed for a long time, but I don't think its a publicity thing because on the real, no one except us hip hop heads knows who the fuck MF Grimm is. Stay up fam... Posted by: cwall at February 10, 2006 04:27 PM wow, this is the first time I heard of some mess like this. Actually, just the first from Grimm. On Megalon's album (Tommy Gunn off of Op. D-Day), he dissed DOOM twice in the liner notes; I think one line he said something directly to DOOM, another line was just underscore but you could get the picture. Now, the other thing is, this kid that lives here in Alexandria, VA. claims that DOOM lived in the area and stole this other dude's MPC and moved to Atlanta with it. The kid caught up with and confronted him about, and DOOM supposedly brushed it off as "a grimy part of the game, deal with it". Hmmm...I ain't never heard of that anywhere else, so I don't know how true that is. To come out with a straight up lie like that though is wack, though. Finally, I do remember reading about a show somewhere where DOOM was performing, and someone from M.I.C. ran up on DOOM and punched him in the face. Whoever put up the post said they thought it may have been part of the act, but then said it damn sure didn't look like it. PEACE y RIP J DILLA Posted by: KGB1973 at February 11, 2006 04:10 PM def the weirdest beef track i ever heard (and there are some weird ones)... memoir, maybe, but he's barely making up sentences... Hold up , Doom is not a bitch ass wigger. The way I see it is Grimm is well bitter that Dooms going places and the only poor tracks hes made is when hes doubled up with Grimm. MF Doom is without a doubt THE MOST ORIGINAL and talanted MC out there....and even if Doom has made off with the money, he is a metal faced villan!! what do you expect...Theres many MC's out there who need dissing- I could spend all day making a list but I wont, I cant imagine Doom following this up, Hes got much better things to be doing, like the new Ghost album etc.. Posted by: sonny gutters at February 18, 2006 01:16 AM DOOM is the most creative cat out there right now, he doesnt need to respond to this crap to sell records. If you know your music, you know that Grimm's rhymes have never been as good as DOOM's, and I feel bad for the guy now that he has resorted to this. DOOM's beats speak for themselves, and I dont care if they were made on a stolen MPC, cuz they are the shit. If Grimm wants to sell records maybe he could have DOOM produce his next one. Posted by: Etizzle at February 26, 2006 12:40 AM I don't know where to begin. "millions get paid, let's see who make more." is Grimm serious? he sounds like a 3 year old when he rhymes. who's cutting albums with Madlib again? "see through like glass." with similes like that, I can see why Grimm is so confident. "M.I.C. gave you life and we can take that shit away" Grimm talks like he holds sway. Posted by: KingBeef at April 16, 2006 05:17 PM I'm from Australia and from all the way down here i can still see this is no fake beef. Doom and Grimm was tight. Doom fucked grimm over money wise but grimm only mentioned owing doe then the beef was meant to be squashed.but doom obviously never paid back and eventially diised MIC and grimm wasn't standing that shit. whether doom called MIC midgets snitches faggots whatever. a diss is a diss and if you wear that you wear a skirt. you gotta comeback. Plus grimm owns day by day. he ain't jealous of dooms cash flow he just pissed that now he's got a cashflow he ain't payin debts. Long story short - They're both talented and at the end of the day when the headphones go on and I blaze a bat, I don't give a kcuf who's beats r in my ear - ust so long as it has substance! And for real - they both have it! Posted by: Prophet at April 25, 2006 06:55 PM THE BEEF IS OVER MF DOOM DISSING M.I.C. IN DANGER-DOOM the song "El chubanebre" contains the lyrics : If you notice , the beef is freshly cooked - the Mf Grimm rebutal song disses both Mf doom and DangerMouse. Now honestly, dangerdoom's replay value i think - honestly - sucks. Madlib's single remix of Space Hoes is way better than dangermouse's mix in my opinion. Of course you gotta remember , in the business you cant take shit and you cant really talk shit and not expect something to occur. Mf doom obviously overlooked the fact that Grimm - who listened to his material as well as stuck by his side, i mean, not just anyone would get THAT mad over something as trivial as two lines but it apparently struck a HUGE nerve with grimm. You can obviously expect a drama scene to occour very soon or either a reconciliation but i think grimm is at the point of popping and it turning into a 'Doom goes Boom' driveby or something like that. Now, the best thing they can do is just blast each other on the mic or make up, if someone dies over this lil trivial shit its gonna screw up the music and careers of over 2 different artists. Someone will get found out eventually, etc etc etc. But yes, its all over two lines in the song El Chupanebre on the disc Danger-Doom (self titled) a collaboration with DangerMouse (honestly, lack luster.) P.S. maybe is doom could keep this material from getting leaked like three months in advance like ive been seeing for the last year or so, MAYBE - just maybe - his sales will bump up and he'll get some major major spots. But, if he did, it would only be right to bring the whole clique from back in the day along with him. thats my two cents.. I don't understand doom havin' problems with mic now. also, the line about 'slap the f** s** out'em' points at contemporary mtv rap, I think. not about grimm/mic. Posted by: ef at May 4, 2006 09:48 AM Look closely at the cover of "MM Food." Doom is eating a bowl of cereal full of "$" signs and the comic-book-equivalent-depictions of the members of Monsta Island Czars. Grimm looks like he's drowning in money, and doom is just eating it up with a grin on his face. It's reminiscent of "24IF." Posted by: grimmreaper at July 29, 2006 09:33 PM The lack of knowlodge here is outstanding. MF Grimm is massively talented. MF DOOM is massively talented. American Hunger is as good as any MF DOOM album, MADVILLIAN album or whatever. STOP TRYING TO SUCK MF DOOMS DICK. Posted by: Grimmishardashell at August 7, 2006 08:37 AM The song has a lot of history embedded within it. "Doin songs with RZA Doom recently did a song with Rza and not to mention Ghostface as well, (Dangerdoom) not to mention the Ironman and the Supervillain that only God knows when will be released. I think Grimm perceived Doom to be headed mainstream and changing his beliefs about not only the hiphop world but about everything that DOOM stood for, everything that made DOOM who he is. Grimm, prolly as close currently as a brother can get to Doom, just doesn't want to see such an amazing mind crash and burn. Posted by: Zee at August 16, 2006 04:34 PM Doom is the best underground artist out right now besides Technique (dude has been on a severe hiatus, but he making his lost time count...) Grimm is a good artist too, but I sense that he is kinda jealous of Doom's success. He is actually ashamed of himself, and you can hear that in this song. He disses Doom, but towards the end of the song, he realizes that when he disses Doom, he is only dissing himself. They both held each other down through mad shit. Grimm has to understand that a true leader sacrifices for his team and keeps his ego in check. Leaders don't snitch on their friend's personal business and then try to make up for shit like it never happened. Doom is like Grimm. They don't like some timey shit, and Grimm apologized for his behavior on the song, but you can't diss someone and then apologize. According to the song, Doom was with this nigga when he was out on $100,000 bail. He coulda got locked for being with Grimm, but he stuck by dude all the way to Cali and helped him cut his album. Doom held this nigga down, and then he went sometimey on him by putting Doom's personal financial situation out there into the press. That was some real fucked up shit for Grimm to do, and he knows it. Doom dissed M.I.C., but he never released anything about Grimm saying his name and shit. He dissed them other wack niggaz on the team that no one cares about....cause they are wack man. Why would he continue to work with a group of no-talents that are going nowhere when he is making beats for Ghost album, doing Madvillain 2, and trying to get his paper up? I'm sure Doom is an asshole, but everyone has asshole friends. A friend turns into an enemy when they betray you to strangers. At this point in his career, Grimm made a big mistake betraying Doom like that. He needs Doom to really shine, and the loss is felt on the few tracks I heard on American Hunger. The album sounds good though. In the end, Doom is a talented asshole type dude, but you don't shit on your friends that held you down and then expect to be forgiven that quick...... Posted by: allnice at August 25, 2006 11:31 AM ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ we all know Grims dope and we will all know how much Danniel bites.Like were is Keo?And why does Doom run to people he has dissed in the industry.Seems to me this gossipy beef is so spicey cats is moaning who is better. In my book its about who is foul.So u can hide behind the mask but your see through like glass, ask Pete nice hell tell ya.Peace the regulator Bashton Invizabulmanagement. Posted by: Bashton invizabulman at September 5, 2006 02:02 PM this is depressing to hear to me because doom is like the man to me, he's my inspiration for all the music i make, people even told me i had an MF style! I didn't even notice well i better do research Posted by: john...................... at September 8, 2006 08:15 PM GRIMM is not jealous of DOOM. I mean think if Grimm wanted success he could get it easy being shot so many times. He even refers to that somewhere on AMERICAN HUNGER. It sounds to me like Grimm is just a bit upset and "worried" about Doom being lost to the commercial mainstream. But to be honest, i would much rather listen to Doom in the company of the Stones Throw gang rather than the Czars. Which never really grew. And how mainstream is Stones Throw anyways? This whole thing is also a testament to how powerful Doom is, that Grimm would take his time to pen whole VERSES pointed directly at Doom, while Doom only made a quick reference to the Czars bein...wack. In the end, both fellas are legit, and peace should rule because we all would enjoy some more GRIMM/DOOM collaborations. Posted by: haterhater at October 5, 2006 05:06 PM you guys are all fucking gay.... Posted by: haterhater at October 5, 2006 05:08 PM I think all the MF Grimm/Superstar Jet Jag/Monster Island/etc... joints are duff compared to any Vik Vaughn, MF Doom, King Geedorah, MadVillain or whatever album (apart from maybe the second Vik album). Grimm may own Day-by-Day but maybe he's just a little bit jealous that the whole world loves anything with Doom attached to it. Posted by: J, UK at October 13, 2006 01:29 PM I see it like this. I respect and appreciate the meaning behind the mask, IT'S ALL 'BOUT THE WRECK. Hip Hop needs that wright now. Doom is the sure shot. What ever beef Grimm has he shoudnt had mentioned Sub Roc(R.I.P) thats just fucked up. OH yeah no disrespect but how the fuck is Grimm gonna beat Dooms ass from a wheel chair?. Come on be cool. Posted by: Omari at October 23, 2006 06:10 PM Nothing justifies putting another man's business in the street. That's a straight bitch move. Maybe DOOM doesn't work well in groups; so he bounced. Like he explained, "Time waits for no man". Writing a whole song to diss someone's one or two liner shows you have way too much time on your hands. But hell the finish product is good. DOOM's MIC jab may have just woken GRIMM out of his MF slumber. Much in the way I feel Jay-Z woke-up NAS. It's all GRAVY. Hopefully we'll continue to get some good hip-hop from these bitch-out sessions (he owes me money; his friends can't rhyme...blah...blah...blah). But honestly I'd rather hear more collabos than two N*s squawking like birds. Posted by: MM..MM..GOOD at October 24, 2006 05:51 AM Fucking hell! Posted by: chunk at October 25, 2006 07:32 PM I would like to see a return track....but I do NOT want to see this turn into the whole EC vs Demigodz bull shit. All that happend there was Cage got pissed and left EC. I would like to see MF Doom start rapping like Zeb Love again...Kinda to parallel cage...but not really since cage was never normal like he is now. Just some thoughts. Posted by: mcpsad at October 26, 2006 06:36 PM fuck all yall doom is nice as shit, stop with all this gossip nonsense,if theres beef theres beef. its all just music anyway stop getting so deep into it u internet scums DOOM IS A VILLIAN DONT YOU GET IT HE AINT NICE TO PEOPLE HE'LL FCUK U UP, SAYIN!?
