February 10, 2006James "J Dilla" Yancey Has Passed AwayConfirmed by Okayplayer. Tragic beyond words. Posted by jsmooth995 at February 10, 2006 05:01 PMComments
If it is true, Then R.I.P. J Dilla. I loved your music and your spirit. You will be sorely missed. I send my condolences/prayers to his family. Posted by: Trent at February 10, 2006 05:47 PM man this sux... Posted by: dylan at February 10, 2006 09:19 PM I'm sad as fuck right now.... A Tragic Loss. My Nigga Dilla is Gone !!!!!!RIP J DILLA
Posted by: Antonio at February 11, 2006 04:24 AM I was at a Living Legends concert tonight and they mentioned it. I don't think much of the crowd knew of him, but it still went dead silent. Sad stuff that this shit still happens. Posted by: Stussy D at February 11, 2006 06:50 AM They said something about that he was partying in New York City when it happened... Posted by: Stussy D at February 11, 2006 06:54 AM "they" were misinformed. this news report claims his mother found him in his room... Posted by: veronica at February 11, 2006 11:06 AM J Dilla loved his work so much he killed himself. He said he used to be in his basement and make beats and not eat or sleep. He ruptured his kidney from banging out to many beats in his basement He was a true genius. A genius' job is to create value. If you want to be a genius at anything it does not take super intelligence it takes the drive of a champion. Dilla had the drive of a champion. He was a genius. If you love your work so much that you are willing to skip eating and sleeping you have the drive of a champion. Just don't over do it!!!!!!!!! Dilla is gone because he worked so hard at what he did. This makes me want to work myself to death. Your health is very important. It is okay to work very, very, very hard but you must take utmost care of your health. It you have the chance to walk away from a fight, run!!!!! Eat fruits and vegatables, exercise, love don't hate, and create something worth something. Posted by: realhiphopfan at February 11, 2006 11:15 AM RIP. I hate when good people pass too young like this. Posted by: Eat My Shorts at February 11, 2006 03:41 PM Lupus is a pretty rough disease for someone who likes to party and not eat. I wonder why he didn't want to say anything about it. I mean, all these rumors were swirling, and it's not like it was his fault or something. But I guess it's understandable cuz Lupus is usually terminal, if I'm not mistaken People have no idea how influential this guy was. It was a very subtle influence, but you can really hear it in a lot of today's independent artists. I definitely agree with ?uest that Dilla should go down as influential as any other producer in hip hop. Posted by: i'm the skwidawd at February 11, 2006 04:36 PM Never heard of the dude before, listening to his tracks for the first time right now... shits amazing, makes me think in a way, he left for kids like me to sit and listen to his shit, from the composition down to the intricate subtleties. Shits crazy, hip-hop is the greatest addiction to fall victim to. RIP to fallen artists and their rising work. Posted by: GuySmiley51 at February 11, 2006 08:10 PM I'll miss him , I'll never forget when I got that Pharcyde tape on a beatifull summer in amsterdam where I was born and raised...changed the way I looked at things and was definetly the spark for doing what i'm doing right now ...no words. Just.. thanks dilla!! Posted by: JLS at February 12, 2006 09:24 AM I'm shocked at the news that J Dilla is dead. I've been a big fan of his music right from his Pharcyde days to his latest album - Donuts. He was one of the best hip-hop producers of all time. Posted by: John at February 12, 2006 01:09 PM I've been have'n a hard time with this. Dilla dawg was true hip-hop in the nineties. He became even more legendary and innovative in the new millennium. He helped me form into the way I approach hip-hop - which is one of the biggest parts of my life. I love that he left us with some of the greatest hip-hop music ever composed - im crushed that it has to end...I feel like I lost my best friend. When I have trouble approachin my own lyrics, shows, puttin in work in general - hip-hop helps provide a real stability. Jay Dee was hip-hop. Jay Dee will always be hip-hop. And even though it feels like that stability is gone, all I have to do is listen to his music - and it brings back all the memories and puts things in perspective. Jay Dee did that for me - and for everyone - even if everyone didn’t know it. RIP J - I’ll always be listening... Posted by: J-Essential at February 13, 2006 01:14 AM This is a sad day for hip hop. Too bad most the world will never know the great tracks and true genius. Reminds me too much of Big L Posted by: needles at February 13, 2006 01:57 AM To the cat that said Lupus is a terminal disease... I suggest you read up on it. It is NOT. I'm still here and my situation is very similar to Dilla. I have Lupus *for going on 8 years now* and because of a complication with Lupus my kidneys failed. This disease is NO joke. If you don't take care of yourself properly, it's as if you are committing suicide. I would be devastated if I were his mom because she should've been on his case about taking better care of himself. Hip hop beats is what he lived for, but in the end it's what took him away. Still, he left a very strong legacy, and if anything I've learned from his death is that I will take better care of myself. It's a MUST with people in our condition. God bless, Erika Posted by: NYsocialbuttafly at February 14, 2006 09:54 AM Jay Dee (a.k.a. J.Dilla) was one of the stars of our present & future. He blessed us with beats that could make yo momma cry. Dude blessed us with ill production (Slum Village, Common, Tribe, etc.) ,to blessing us with his lyrical skills on his own album. I hope the man is resting in peace. Thank you J.Dilla for keeping HIP HOP REAL! Posted by: DAT NIGGA at February 14, 2006 11:37 AM RIP, too tragic. Its a rare thing that Lupus takes someone off the earth, I'm one who lives with it, I'm about Jays age too.... brings home whats important, he will be missed. Posted by: ixiana at February 14, 2006 01:10 PM Rest In Peace J Deezy! Posted by: neil nice at February 14, 2006 01:34 PM In a time where "rap" music has replaced hip hop on the radio, and the focus is on our own self-destruction as if we never took the time to try and counter it in the first place, Dilla was and still is breath of fresh air. So many people that couldn't understood hip hop gave it respect when they heard the man do his thing, because he poured his heart and soul into everything he did. He was like an invisible pioneer; so much of what he has done has influenced music today, and people don't even know who he is. A lot of artists the average joe may listen to had worked with the man, he never got the credit he deserved, but it was like he knew that one day the world was going to recognize. That day came on Feb. 10th. "Stop", "One Eleven" and "Don't Cry" has become so surreal now. My wife had no clue nor gave a f*ck about who Dilla was, regardless of how much I've been pumping his music for the past eight years. And when someone like her is walking around hummin' tunes from "Donuts" on their own, you know it's the truth. Say what you want to; when Biggie and Tupac died, I was like, "damn," and then went about my business. I recognized their talent and contributions before the loss, but it never hit as close to home as this. Dilla moved the world though, even outside of hip hop. Go check "The Light" remix with Common and Erykah Badu. Shit is beyond hip hop, and that's not even scratching the surface. I feel like I've lost a brother, and didn't even know the man. R.I.P. Jay. Posted by: KGB1973 at February 14, 2006 05:51 PM NYsocialbuttafly... I guess Dilla had another unspecified "blood disease", along with his admitedly negligent/destructive habits. But I certainly wouldn't criticize him for it. We all come and go in our own way. I put that "if I'm not mistaken" in their because I've seen how bad Lupus wracks people, so I figured the disease might be fatal. True, medicine has advanced greatly, although, but if you don't get the proper treatment... it will kill you. But I will say it's good to hear of cases like yours where people have successfully dealt with it. stay healthy!!! Posted by: i'm the skwidawd at February 15, 2006 01:00 PM James Yancey...WOW...Your legacy will never be forgotten here in Detroit Mi...Your first cousin, Margo is very proud of you. Now I know that I have one more soldier looking down on me...AMEN Posted by: Margo Moses at February 17, 2006 09:10 AM Jay dee had and will always have many a fan down here in NZ, there's many around who have been talking about what a huge loss his death brings to us all, but we are all thankful that he gave us so many beautiful beats and shaped so much of the music we get off on down here, as well as being a living mentor for those of us hooked on the mpc trip ourselves. thank you for your blessed sounds, and I hope you're dropping more beats wherever you are in the universe now, much love to you xx Posted by: LP at February 19, 2006 10:19 PM I know we all gotta go but wow.......it's hard when reality hits. I didn't know him personally but I loved his music the talent that he had I haven't heard anything that he produced that I didn't like. I hope he gets the recognition he deserves there are so many of us who did not know J Dilla and his music. His spirit will go on through his sound...I am praying for JDilla and his family Posted by: Andrea at February 22, 2006 06:33 PM j dilla i love u man! bless up Posted by: dj chill at February 23, 2006 02:56 AM never thought id cry for someone i dint know Posted by: j b chill at February 23, 2006 03:04 AM Jame's personality left a lasting impression on anyone that he blessed with his smile. Since the first day I laid eyes on him at the Hip Hop shop over 10 years ago, I knew he was someone special. Not only did he have enormous talent, he also had an enormous heart.
