Wow, Jay, I gotta disagree with you 100% on this one. I'm no hater, but come on, THIS is what hip hop gets recognized for nowadays?! At a time when Ramona Moore's moms is in court seeking justice for her impisoned, raped, tortured and brutally murdered daughter, not to mention the countless other examples of violence and misogyny directed at Black women on a daily basis, the Oscar award was particularly offensive to me. Especially in light of the uphill fight to show not only the negative images in hiphop, to show that our music and culture can be (and usually is) enlightening, thought-provoking and uplifting (a fight that you in particular play such a major part in, much respect due).

Maybe I'm just getting old, but seeing the beautiful, mostly Black women onstage portraying themselves as skanks & ho's, and grown-ass men rapping about selling these women's bodies for cash, while their much paler and much wealthier-dressed counterparts whooped and hollered from the audience, kinda made me wonder. The fact that the Queen herself presented the award only added insult to injury. What ever happened to "U.N.I.T.Y.. you gotta tell 'em no/You ain't a bitch or a ho"?

Am I against Three Six Mafia personally? Hell no, it IS hard out there (for ALL of us), and I would never begrudge any struggling artist their right to be heard, even if I disagreed with the message. Against the movie? No, there's much worse, we all know that.

But Public Enemy winning an Oscar for "Fight the Power"... now THAT woulda been a cool moment for hiphop.

I'm with Kami on this one. C'mon now. I'm sure there were much better Hip Hop inspired songs they could have nominated. This is what happens when you get bourgeois white folks who don't have a clue about Hip Hop voting on this. Dudes named Crunchy Black are fit their definition of Hip Hop and Black folks--they figured why not give a little token love. LOL!

Three 6 Mafia is a matter of taste. I find it amusing and subversive that they won. On the other hand, If PE had won an Oscar, they would've had to completely condemn Prof Griff as anti-Semitic, rather than the wrist-slap they gave him. And, Chuck D would never let anyone forget they won an Oscar (I imagine Flavor Flav wearing the statue around his neck) And, wouldn't Chuck have to redo "Burn Hollywood Burn"?

Plus, wouldn't you say that Ludacris presenting nominees onstage (as well as being in the cast of a movie that won the Best Picture Oscar) is a cool moment for hip-hop? "Boyz N Da Hood" was nominated, yes, but didn't win.

The Oscars is soooo boring-- Three 6 and company livened up the party.

Luda was cool, yeah. And any award show is a matter of taste, I know... but it speaks volumes about those who decided that out of ALL the hip hop songs that have been showcased in movies ("Jazz Thing," "Freedom," "Gangsta's Paradise," etc. etc. etc.) THIS is the one they choose to honor. And not only that, they had to have the humiliating scene I described above onstage, with fat pampered Hollywood elite clapping along not because they really understood what was going on, but because they didn't want to be seen as "unhip" or "uncool."

I half expected Ali G's Borat to walk on & lead everyone in a rousing chorus of "Throw the Jew Down The Well" for good meaure LOL.

Amusing, yeah. Subversive, not so much. I think this was just Hollywood's idea of trying to "stay in touch" with the young folk, as well as shutting up an increasingly powerful contingent (read: us) that recognizes hip hop as a legitimate art form. You know, throwing a dog the old proverbial bone (no pun intended hehe).

I respect your opinion, but c'mon, did you not secretly hope that during Reese Witherspoon's acceptance speech, one of the Wu would jump onstage, grab the mic & scream "Mafia's cool, but WU TANG IS FOR THE CHILDREN!"

P.S. I should really add that the only reason I bothered with the awards this year was b/c I was tired as f*ck and too lazy to change channels, plus I wanted to see if Ang Lee would win, being that he was robbed for "Crouching Tiger".

I think 3-6 mafia pretty accurately represents hip-hop - mysogynistic and disrespectful to women - what with that video p-popping where you don't see the women's faces, it's pretty telling. So if the oscar gods wanted to give a bone to hip-hop, they threw the bone right in the dog's mouth because that's what hip-hop is. These days I'll watch a hip-hop video only if someone alerts me to it for s specific reason - like the p-popping horror show, and even then I'll watch it on Yahoo, because then I can search for something specific instead of subjecting myself to tasteless crap on a full length hip-hop video show. I had to switch to VH1 for this reason. Basically my personal guideline is if the MC is not a woman, then someone's gonna be calling me a ho or a gold digger so I ain't buying that record.

I'm reaching on Steven Spielberg and information on him is hard to find.
I still think he is cool because of all the movies and all ,but hay I want to star in a movie too , I'm even writing a movie script that I would like to star in g2g
