April 16, 2006Our Easter ShameA few weeks ago I picked up the NY Times on the subway, and it had this infomercial insert full of faux news articles about "Sudan: The New Happening Hotspot! Things Are Looking Up!" and so on. The sort of "doth protest too much" happy-face advertising that you know must have some evil creepiness behind it, even if you know nothing of the subject matter. In my pre-coffee haze at the time, I thought to myself "wait, doesn't the Sudan have a sort of, uhh, genocide thing going on?" So for those who may be in a perpetual pre-coffee haze, such as our Chief Executive, here is a reminder: There is, indeed, a sort of genocide thing going on over there. And it's getting worse. And we are doing nothing. President Bush and millions of Americans today will celebrate Easter and the end of Holy Week. But where is the piety in reading the Bible while averting one's eyes from genocide? Mr. Bush, how about showing your faith by doing something a bit more meaningful - like standing up to the butchers?Posted by jsmooth995 at April 16, 2006 03:48 PM Comments
Jay, Posted by: Cal Ulmann at April 16, 2006 04:54 PM Let them fools in the Sudan know that we watching them, or send people in there, the UN are as much to blame though, I have no idea what Kofi Annan does to be honest. Posted by: Eat My Shorts at April 17, 2006 10:31 AM FYI, Posted by: Ellen at April 18, 2006 12:37 AM I am asking them! I'm asking everybody. I merely used Bush as an example because he's the one who represents us.. Bush has indeed very recently started to urge more action from the UN et al, after far too long "dragging his feet" and "sausage-making" as the most recent NY Times editorial put it.. and as far as I'm concerned, this only counts as talking a good game, from the guy who supposedly declared "not on my watch!" when looking back on Rwanda.. Just as in Rwanda, there is more than enough blame to go around.. but my first questions will always be for those who were elected to serve me.. Posted by: Jay Smooth at April 18, 2006 01:04 AM i agree with you, jay. and ellen: i don't think we "should be asking the other 189 states in the world" anything at all until we (the US) put forth some kind of effort. the US is the world's largest economy; with that title comes responsibility. we wage war with the middle east in the name of that responsibility, but when any real need of assistance comes about, we assess what it is we have to gain from assisting, and in many cases, as in this situation or rwanda, there is (in our eyes) nothing to be gained, and so we do nothing. it's disgusting Posted by: sanju at April 18, 2006 04:10 PM and by the way, iraq has voiced its desire for us stop interfering, but that hasn't stopped us from going about our agenda. Posted by: sanju at April 18, 2006 04:14 PM Don't you know daddy-o? Its not genocide! Its "ethnic warfare" I mean how more Orwellian double-talk can We The People &(*^@# take. Its getting to the point where I'm just loosing my mind and laughing at these headlines!
