Young Jeezy Simultaneously Argues For and Against Nas

As previously documented, I don't believe in drawing boundaries around "real hip-hop", much less declaring it dead.. and I like Jeezy's stuff more than most of the Southern artists who get scapegoated in these conversations. But I'll be damned if his reasoning here doesn't epitomize everything us old folks hate about today's mainstream.

I don't know what depresses me more: Jeezy's inability to imagine that Nas might not see hip-hop as just another hustle or means for a nigga to eat*, or his last-ditch retreat into questioning whether Nas "busts guns on the street" and has "homies in the feds."

Monie Love Asks Young Jeezy About Nas' Album Title

I haven't even listened to this yet but I'm dying at the Kimbo Slizzice copywright.

"That's how a nigga eat."

That is funny as shit.

Alright now lemme go back and listen.

I just listened.

That was fucked up and funny.

I can't believe he was disrespecting Monie Love like that.

He was outta order. I peep the way they debate. They try to cut her off. All she had to say was one word: balance.

Sometimes I get really confused because these convos are like spinning wheels with no forward motion being made.

Why, why, why doesn't a big name artist or voice come out and put these jokers on blast and say "record sales don't equal skills"?

Why won't someone that's a real name clearly articulate to these dudes that jailtime, tatoos, gettin shot, knowing people that's knocked, having bricks in the street don't mean you have talent?

Why?

It's so many games. I think no one says anything because they know they may have to jump on one of these wack urban pop songs in the future.

Like the KRS step into a world remix jawn with puff.

This is probably why Nas plays the fence.

And where the fuck is the RZA?

RZA and the WU shoulda had beef with and crushed all of these suckas into crumbs.

Muvafuckas just gave our shit away.

I just don't understand why no one is checking these dudes.

They're just lettin em run wild. There should be no little wayne. No lil jeezy or whatever the fuck his name is.

It confuses me.

The only cool thing about this bullshit is everyone sees through them and soon this shit is gonna fade out.

And quality will return even stronger.

Sometimes I wonder if that's why all of this had to happen.

It's like politics. You're treated as a pariah if you stray from the hip-hop narrative. Events are staged to give candidates cred. Do not point out that these events are not real.

Posted by: jim at December 8, 2006 12:31 PM

The answer to {Why, why, why doesn't a big name artist or voice come out and put these jokers on blast and say "record sales don't equal skills"?} is actually the easiest question to answer... who is out right now that can say it AND not be hypocritical... I mean.. I love what Big Poppa was to the game but in all honesty I think in the battle toprove which coast was the best .. Hip Hop was being forcefed poision.

I don't think HipHop is dead.. not in the least.. I do believe hiphop as we (let's be real 30+ crowd) remember and love can't ever be. The environment that we all came up in is gone. Partying in the streets with speakers a mic and a group of folks just looking for a cheap good time is not even realistic. Drive-bys and Street corner hustling makes that type of thing a distant memory and the age group that is to blame is ours. We let it choke and die. HipHop was founded on having fun and being expressive. Think about that for a second...... when is the last rap/hiphop track that made YOU want to have fun and be expressive at the same time?.. that's not to say that its not out there and no one is doing it ... but there isn't a real market for it any longer.

Hip Hop to me is like Big Band Jazz.. folks still make it, lots of folks enjoy it, but they all remember the older stuff and the times when they heard it and can't let that slip from their minds long enough to realize that the new stuff is out there and needs to be nourished. This new Rap/hiphop is like bebop and its taking the music somewhere that we as the older generation are just not equipped OR WILLING to go.

*I usually ramble and don't make sense. I hope I made sense this time, but if not, I just give up*

Posted by: Belve at December 8, 2006 01:34 PM

The reason why HIp Hop is dead is because all these young RAPPERS! think that's all there is to Hip Hop. They don't understand the culture and never will so it falls upon deaf ears. It's sad. "Does Nas bust his guns?" That is NOT HIP HOP..... So yes, with ignorant ass quotes like that, Hip Hop is DEAD!!

May she rest in PEACE!!

Posted by: GrantLove at December 8, 2006 04:39 PM

Hip Hop is dead..Jeezy is a sensitive lil prick.. MaaAAAAANN!!Jeezy..& alot of other artist..that are out today..make decent..riding music.."That's NOT HIP HOP" & i hope Jeezy..don't consider himself hip hop..b/c he's not.."Trap Music" is what he likes to call it..but umm..Monie wasn't even referring..to that lil sensitive kat.. anyway..hip hop..been gone..for some 2 1/2 yrs now..if not longer..umm...i remember..few yrs back..i couldn't wait..2 get home..4rm school.. and go on mixtapesusa.com..and other sites..to see..what new music is out..so i can download & burn..but...it's not like that anymore..nowaday.. im looking up..older tracks..for yrs ago..that feeling is just gone..im not knocking the way.. a man eat..nobody wanna be broke..but...it's obvious..which ones..are doing it..for the love of.."hip Hop"..& the ones..who's their..just for a check..i mean..it's obvious..yrs ago..it was difficult..getting into the game..nowaday..it's so easy to get on..2 the point it's hard..it's like..you have to sale yourself short..to get on..the katz with talent..aren't getting on anymore..it's the katz with part time jobs..who do music..just for the heck of it..and the creating..these catchy hook songs..it's wyld.. but HIP HOP..IS DEAD??

p.s. DIDNT SAY IT COULDN'T BE RESSURECTED THOUGH!!:)

Posted by: CHUCK at December 8, 2006 11:51 PM

it's just like when people argued whether or not punk was dead...it started as a non-conformist youth counter-culture type of revolution - but the second people began to realize that all you had to do to be punk was spike your hair, wear tight clothes and have radical political views it became formulaic and conformist: the style was still there of course, but the essence of what it stood for was "dead".

the same goes for hip hop - im not saying alot of the hip hop being put out today is bad. i respect jeezy, i absolutely love lil wayne, but as far a hip hop goes? when hip hop started, wasnt it the counter culture that birthed from the bronx and eventually spread to other similar areas in other cities? didnt it involve things like breaking, graffiti, block partys and all that stuff? dont get me wrong, the spirit of competition is still there, but all that other stuff? no way.

What up NYC?

Thanks.

No I was actually talking about the classic by BDK.

I'm wondering if these guys know this song. And I'm guessing they probably don't so that's why this stuff goes on and on like so.

I'm gonna start using basketball analogies to get through to folks.

So I was saying to myself since these little dudes and these country guys (cuz lil jeezy is like 30 something) constantly pump dumb shit, then they must've never heard of Big Daddy Kane, Rakim or Kool G Rap.

Otherwise they would be ashamed of their product.

So now, I'm just gonna start saying how can these guys be in the game and NOT know about the cannons.

That's like saying you're a fan of basketball and not only do you not like Jordan, Magic Johnson and The Doc (Dr. J -- Julius Erving), but you've never heard of them and have seen none of their games.

I actually was talkin'to this cat from Texas n he liked that Jeezy kinda garbage n a lil later i found out he was just hyped 'bout the beats. I think dudes aint even really listining to the rappers. They just absorb the energy of the beats. Lyrics dont get these dudes goin'. I mean the yhave to know most of them niggaz is wac.

jeezy played himself; shooting people and going to federal prison isnt hip hop.

Posted by: Biggga at December 10, 2006 02:11 PM

I think you definitely right, NYC. But them beats is still wack too.

These clowns also just more or less go with what's popular. They can't make decisions on thier own. Their opinions are fed to them.

Someone says "hey bump this. It's in the clubs. you gon get all the bitches."

So boom then they run and try keep that night at club goin all day.

One of these silly ass lil or young dudes should make an album called "club life forever". Shit, I wouldn't be surprised if it aint been done yet.

I'll be so glad when this shit fades out.

It's bound to.

Man this Jeezy is so disrespectful to the game.
(Remember he is the same guy who brought you the snowman shirts that lil kids were wearing in school) Give dude a few years to keep talking dirty and he'll either be non exsitent, dead, or in jail.

Whoever said wu should have came out and blasted these ignorant spoiled rappers was right.

And if Nas' album title can keep bringing out the truth outta these lame so called rappers then he has done his job. They are exposing themselves for who they really are.

Bottom line, this dude doesn't care about the art or culture. He only cares about money and numbers and thats why I don't care about him.

goddamm let the brothers live...the whole shit started when monnie ask jezzy what does he think about wayne (another disrespectful muvafucka) talking shit about jay-z...nas had nothing to do with that...is this the trend?...nas never bust no gun, or held no blocks down...i'm sorry i thought we were talking about music and further more that's makes nas smart because jail is not a fun place to go

I can understand feeling as if Hip Hop is dead, but at the same time I ultimately know that Hip Hop is alive, and the reason I say that is.....
Coming from a place where Hip Hop made lives, there are many, many MC's, and Rappers doing this Hip Hop day in, and day out. We live it we breathe it, and we are alive.

The problem is not with the music. The music of today's hip hop culture still bears the soul and ora that creates the Rappers, and MC's.

The problem is The Industry.

When you are given the same thing for lunch everyday, what started out as something you craved all day eventually becomes tasteless.

This Industry Way, not only affects the fans in ways where there never fed hunger, has no choice but to die....It also put enormus pressure on the Artist to constantly look for new ways to pump your adrenaline. . .

This has been the cause of many Artists fall.

The Industry needs to open up to the rest of this Hip Hop Culture and expand what is given to the people. . .

In turn, both views on this topic in this interview held purpose, and truth, passion and honor. Hip Hop Is ...

Posted by: earwizzle at December 18, 2006 02:20 PM

The best thing is, I wouldn't recognize Young Jeezy if he was sitting right next to me. And I have a two-year old and a 7-month old that probably won't know him from Adam either, but they'll surely know who Nas, Eric B. & Rakim, PE, Run DMC, etc. are, just like we knew who our Dads listened to (mine loved some P-Funk and early Prince ... yes, really. God status in my home)

I came to grips with this a long time ago. Hip-Hop isn't dead so much as you have to work harder to find it. ClearChannel and Viacom probably aren't going to assist you. This music has grown so much that you can't put it all under one umbrella anymore. Hendrix and Slayer and Melissa Etheredge all play "Rock" music, and Hip-Hop is the same way. We waste a lot of time trying to say which forms of Hip-Hop are legitimate ... bottom line is what I think (and I wholeheartedly agree with Nas) is hip-hop isn't exactly what someone else thinks is hip-hop.

You guys made a lot of good points above, none better than whoever said just let these guys keep talking, they're playing themselves.

You'd be mad too if music was your livliehood and Nas just reminded everyone that you suck at it.

Nas hit it on the head late in the album ... if you have to ask why he thinks hip-hop is dead, you're probably part of the reason it died.

Word 'em up.

Last but not least, next time someone argues with you about record sales defining what's good, tell them that makes Vanilla Ice one of the all-time greats. Guaranteed that shuts them up.

Posted by: TiVo at December 20, 2006 01:57 PM

Honestly, I think at root of it all, Jeezy felt a certain type of way b/c alot of southern rappers have struggled with that notion of not being taken seriously / respected in the "rap world", especially by our east coast artist. This point was highlighted when he calls himself questioning where Moni grew up and boo whooing about NAS not respecting his craft.

Jeezy along with countless other rappers, no matter where they from are exactly (in my opinion) why NAS makes his comments. Moni was basically right in explaining how the other elements of Hip-Hop have had the light turned off over them, which i honestly feel promoted some level of togetherness..u could always find blacks, asians, latinos and whites battle in break dance contest or trying to put up the best "tag" w/ the graffiti art.

But radio reaches the masses and all it took was a couple of lyrics going too far, glorifying this so-called "gangsta" lifestyle. I'll be the first to addmitt that i do like some of Jeezy's & these other "rappers" tracks, but in the long run the majority of the shit being pushed by these cats is a whole bunch of nothing...like some of the old folks say, "nuttin but that nigga talk".

Posted by: Philly Native at December 20, 2006 05:31 PM

Hip Hop what happened??? Hip Hop was a colorful caterpillar of Flash, Bam, Cold Crush, etc. that everyone couldn't help but look at and said, "It has a lot of interesting colors, but its just a worm, it won't last." Then it built a wonderfully strong and powerful cocoon during that Golden and Post-Golden eras. And in the late 90's started to emerge from that cocoon and what we thought was going to be a beautiful butterfly today is nothing but a stinking gypsy moth, flying from trend to trend. Its not that Hip Hop is dead, its just that, that which is fed to the mainstream isn't the Hip Hop that we thought it would be back in the Golden era. That rap crap is nothing but solent green - dead food, made from dead people, for dead souls.

Cats like this Jeezy dude, and all those who celebrate and promote ignorance is what dead, or at least should be (not the people, just their ways). Funny how the statement "Hip Hop is dead" immediately makes them jump on the offensive. But then again this is just another reactionary argument.

Posted by: BlackCTzar at December 21, 2006 12:57 PM

Let me first say that hip-hop is dead. Southern and New York rappers stomped the life out of it. Think of this, in the past we would judge whose skills were the best by their style and lyrics. Now as per Jeezy, it is judge by gunfire and record sales. One of the first to bring Hip Hop down was 50 cent. Using his history of being shot as a backdrop, half dollar half woman sold his soul to the corporate slave masters. He is even hurt that Oprah will not sit down and trade girl stories with him. I am not hating these are the facts.
The south has a great many good underground rappers (New York as well) however only Pimps get play in the new generation of Crap. Come to think of it, what is the history of a Pimp? Answer: A Pimp is a man who would sell his own daughter, sister or mother to make a dime. If times got hard, a Pimp would sell his own backside to get a buck. Pimps are what killed Hip-Hop and it started with a punk who sold his soul for 50 cent.
If Tupac was alive and a new rapper, he would never get any airplay. I am confident that Tupac would be coming at these sellouts harder then Nas. It is a sad day when a so-called thug / Pimp rapper would be emotionally taken apart by a female rapper, so bad that he would storm out of the radio station (like a girl). I guess the Pimps cannot deal with smart females. Run Jeezy and let the man take care of Hip Hop.

Posted by: jaybowalker at December 23, 2006 07:23 AM

...nas declaring "hip hop is dead" is offered in a figurative sense, not a LITERAL one! why does it seem that so many don't get that? i suppose black culture has always leaned toward a literal meaning in things not feeling that events are open for interpretation, that being a luxury for the white well to do class or something...even so, it can still be so frustrating when attempting to discuss the point nas is making...which is to open things up to interpretation on the current state of hip hop as it relates or not to its origins and evolutions rather than to suggest it is literally no more...sheesh...!

Posted by: yeahisaidit at December 25, 2006 09:11 PM

Hip Hop today as we know it is dead. I dont understand how Jeezy can feel so insulted by someone dissin his "craft" yet the first words that come out of his mouth in defense are about money, drugs, and jail. That clearly goes to show you that what is important now a days is not the music. The music seems to be the last thing on these rappers agendas. If hip hop is alive according to Jeezy then if I go outside on my street corner right now and sell rocks I should be able to have a hit single tomorrow. As far as Lil' Wayne goes he wasn't shit until he had Gilly the Kid ghost writing for him. I dont have any respect for these rappers who back themselves up with "niggas still makin guap" as legitimate proof that hip hop is alive. Until legitimately proven to me, hip hop is dead as far as I know it.

What is selling and popular today is just a bunch of trash. A hit single just needs a hot beat and a catchy hook. Most of these young rappers know this and use hip hop was a means to an end, bypassing the music factor along the way. I cannot understand how you can be an MC and not have respect for Monie. To me that says that you don't have respect for Queen Latifa, A Tribe Called Quest, or the Fugees for that matter. And The crap that Jeexy pointed about about Monie being from London? he is just an ignorant man who is too caught up in an image that will never allow him to create good music. Who knew that being able to judge what is or what is not hip hop was about location. If thats the case hip hop should only be listened to and created in the Bronx! as a lover of hip hop I will be forever saddened by its end...

Posted by: Brooklyn at December 26, 2006 07:38 AM

I've been dying to say this but Lil Jeezy tried to play Monie by saying she's from London.

But shit, as far I know she been here since '88 so technically she from whatever borough she frequented in NY.

Everytime these lil and young open their mouths they play themselves.

But on the real, Jeezy and Nas squashed this so maybe we should leave it alone.

Or maybe this discussion is no longer about those two guys and more along the lines of respect and history.

Don't know.

But I'm out.

This comment is for everyone and to kevolution's comment ont the tenth. Jeezy does care about the culture and everything that goes with it. IF he didn't then why would he make records telling everyone who can hear about his hustle and all the money he is bringing in and how he spends it. That is the culture for today in the South especially Atlanta where Jeezy and myself are from. Jeezy makes musice that we love down here because we respect his game and have no doubts on him. There is always gonna be someone with a comeback to this and i expect it, but just realize Jeezy is taking his life and putting it together so the world can hear and enjoy it as well. The same as any author or songwriter creating art by way of book, movie, poem, essay or song lyrics.

Nas Wins this one hands done - HIP HOP IS DEAD is not a statement - It s a rhetorical question that has sparked debate on SKILLZ. People don t understand, he is using it as a marketing tool and also for people to up their game. He was just throwin some spice in the game. Also, the title is meant to induce "suckers" into hatin' - I promise you before 2007 is over somebody is gonna get ETHERED. Watch! I love the south - It s not about hate. Your are missing the whole concept. Understand it s about opening up a forum about where we are - Don t you miss the feeling you used to get when you heard something so dope you couldn t even let the shyt play you had to rewind it - No - The feeling is dead. Again, the NAS and lil jeezy shit is squashed. That means it's over.

But for you DiCi, do you wanna make money or do you wanna make music?

The honest answer that you give will explain everything.

I was born in London and moved to NY when I was 12 and when I go back to there now and see what these rappers are influencing my younger family and Black kids around the planet, it sickens me.

I empathize with Monie. I have had many an arguement go in the same direction. The problem is that in Hip Hop, our level of discussion is at about 8th grade. Any conflicting view is immediately labeled hate and the conversation cannot move from there. Poor Jeezy RAN out of the place when confronted logic.
Sad.
