VIDEO: The Men Behind the "White Rapper Show"

Okay y'all, we're back. 2007 is our 10th anniversary here, and I'm gonna be trying some new things, mainly adding more video to the site.

My first attempt at what the kids call "vlogging" is this clip of my interview with Sacha Jenkins, Jeff "Chairman" Mao" and Elliott Wilson, 3/5ths of a man of the Ego Trip crew.. creators of my favorite magazine ever (Ego Trip), two of my favoriite books ever (Ego Trip's Book of Rap Lists and Ego Trip's Big Book of Racism), and a TV show I never saw because I don't have cable (Ego Trip's Race-O-Rama on VH1).

But this month I will be stealing somebody's cable so I can catch their latest VH1 misadventure, "Ego Trip's The White Rapper Show," on which ten aspiring caucasian emcees compete for a chance to become the next Miilkbone. The crew came to visit us a few days before the premiere, and explained their master plan.

Apologies in advance for Elliott's face being blocked out, my cameraman was drunk. I hadn't seen the show yet when we did the interview, caught it since then but I'm still processing the many levels of absurdity. What do y'all think of it so far?

I think the show is HILARIOUS! I see the show as pure entertainment and nothing serious, unlike the majority of those in the chatroom. I missed the second episode last night, but I'll catch one of the re-broadcasts later this week.

About the "vlogging", It's always good to try new things every now and then.

Hi,

I represent www.bboyzone.com . Would you be interested in exchanging links on your blog? We have a low number of links on our links page, so that should increase your link visibility and drive more traffic to your site.

We are one of the largest breakdancing sites. We will link you back if you add a link to your links page with the link text "How to Breakdance" without the quotes. Email us back when you have added the link and we will add your link ASAP with any link text you want.

Thanks.

Hey J!

This is one of your old high school peeps. I didn't know the show was still going all this time!

The video is cool, but how about getting a podcast on there. I'm in London so I can't listen to the show through the live stream (unless I get up at 5am Sunday, which is not gonna happen).

Anyhow-- keep up the good work.

I haven't watched the vid yet but I know that soundtrack to Ego Trip's big book of rap lists was sick.

I has I'm Not Playin by the Ultimate Force.

Do It Do It.

and um what else?

And a fly album cover with the patrick ewings on it and speakers as skyscrapers.

nice history lesson in it as well.

came out several years ago and is worth every penny.

...AND you get white people explaining to other white people what happens when white people drink: "they f*** s*** up!"

Feeling the vlog direction. I know people are mad suspect at the white rapper show but the Ego Trip crew are real deal hip hop so I think cats have gotta let the show ride for a second and see how it plays out before jumping to conclusions about it. There's obviously some sort of satirical commentary on race they are trying to make with this show so I'm curious as to how it'll develop over further episodes.

man this show is corny. i saw it on vh1 funny with all the white stereotypes but im tired of reality shows.

I probably should be too. I got cable six months ago and am now seriously back on the "horse," completely uncritical in my blind love for sweet cable. Ususally I try to bring my A game to HipHopMusic.com, but Ego Trip's got me on some serious Chris Farley action (Remember when G-Child couldn't get out of the phone booth? ...that was awesome!)

Great Idea!! love the vlog man!!

the white rapper show is OBVIOUSLY pure comedy and in NO WAY did those guys have it in their mind at ANY point that this is even 3% serious.
They are making $, promoting the hell out of their own stuff, and making good TV for morons (which make up 95% or more of the people on the planet), perfect!

It's just that there is not one ounce of originality or anything truly clever to balance out the incredible amount of corny over-used white stereo-types (that would be deemed ridiculously racist if it were against any other race) what's worse is how many people love to safely jump on the vanilla-ice diss bandwagon. Gimme a break. I would love to see him kick the shit out of one of these people. And i truly hate that Serch, someone who has been down for a lot longer than you know. From his T La Rock, warlock records days, and Tony D battles, to helping Nas get in the door, has to resort to abusing unsuspecting white kids who were chosen purely to make fools of themselves. c'mon.

what a world. it's insane that Vh-1 has become the home of TV shows staring and featuring rappers who have not succesfully rapped in a decade.

whatever...

Hey Ego Trips! You guys are the best. Know that your stuff is in my high school classroom. I taped "Race-o-Rama" for my kids; we use "Ego Trips' Big Book of Racism" in my class also. Of course, only the most intelligent, aware kids are able to appreciate the pointed humor. I had a student a couple of weeks ago who came in, I showed him the bookcase, he grabbed the "Big Book of Racism", and never put it down for the next five days he was with us! He would continue reading it along with the classwork we did together. And periodically you would hear him chuckling...

I find the "White Rappers" Show to be terrific! It takes stereotypes and stretches them to their limits, until the human beings behind the stereotypes break through and emerge, as "people", just like us in every way. Some smart, some less so; some big-minded, some small-minded; but no matter who we are we all share a desire to say something important, and to be heard and appreciated for what we say.

I'm going to tape that one for my kids also -- will you put it out on DVD someday?

I can only hope that the bigwigs STAY AWAY on the days I'm playing "White Rappers" in class, because it's annoying trying to explain what I'm doing to unsympathetic administrators!

Thanks again Ego Trippers!
Yours,
Mama Smooth
