How To Download And Save Youtube Videos (UPDATED 8/30/07)

UPDATE 8/30/07: Youtube's latest upgrade broke the javimoya and other youtube video downloader solutions, but this firefox plugin still works on the new youtube, and is the best choice right now. If you don't use Firefox, uhhh, well you should really be using Firefox anyway, dude. Download it!

EDIT: As of 11/11/06, youtube has killed the greasemonkey solution below, but you can easily download youtube videos with the tools at keepvid.com or javimoya.com

-----------------------------------------------------

------

Youtube Download

As mentioned earlier, many files have been booted from youtube this week, and that's sure to continue as the site keeps growing and drawing more attention. Luckily the fine people here put together a little script that lets you save youtube files on your computer. You can just follow the instructions in that link, but I'll repeat them here because it's a little involved and some key steps are buried in the comments section over there.

  • 1. Install the Greasemonkey Extension for Firefox.

  • 2. Right-click this .js file and select "Install User Script" (if you don't see that option try step one again)

  • 3. Now on every youtube video page there should be a red bar at the top, that says "Save As" to download Flash video. (see screenshots here)

  • 4. Right click the text in the red bar, select "Save Link As," and save the file as a .flv file. Firefox will rty to save it as "get_video.php," you need to change the ".php" to ".flv," and change the first part to whatever you prefer.

  • Now you need to either download a media player that runs .flv files, or download a program that converts them to other file types. Here are links to both:

    FLV PLayers

    FLV Player

    VLC player

    FLV Converters

    Riva FLV Encoder

    Total Video Converter

And that should do it. Let me know if this works for y'all!

EDIT: Thanks for the new bit of traffic from Digg, but in all fairness it is undeserved since I was just quoting another guy, who already got Dugg a long time ago. Also, while i'm back in here I'll post another method that many may find easier: http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php

I'd REALLY appreciate it! Thanks a lot!

this is exactly what I've been searching for!
    great!

Posted by: Boku Baka at March 1, 2006 9:57 PM

I looked through quite a few methods of retrieving YouTube video and there are several good methods posted around the net. However after looking around YouTube's own methods I came up with this simple method:

    1) get the video-id from the URL that you normally click on to play a video

    2) in a new browser-page, enter the following URL:

    http://www.youtube.com/get_video?video_id=[video-id-here]

    example: http://www.youtube.com/get_video?video_id=Yuj5fo56Lbw

    3) video download initiates as a normal file download... choose 'save as' and give it whatever name you want, with an .FLV extension

    there's your video!

Posted by: Jonathan at March 2, 2006 7:01 PM

why mess around with greasemonkey, firefox, extensions webpages, etc?

just enter this into your browser:

    http://www.youtube.com/get_video?video_id=[video-id-here]

... and save the download with an .FLV extension

works great for me anyway... been downloading tons of them

Posted by: Jonathan at March 2, 2006 7:04 PM

here's an example for those who don't understand how to enter the video-id:

    http://www.youtube.com/get_video?video_id=Yuj5fo56Lbw

Posted by: Jonathan at March 2, 2006 7:05 PM

that vdownloader will download it and convert it for you though

Posted by: grim at March 3, 2006 8:24 PM

    tried everything on this page.
Option 1 - The Grease monkey extension with Firefox, installing this, then renaming the generic downlaoded file then running RIVA and converting to MPG only to lose quality in the translation was "not" worth it. using RIVA encoder takes the most time.

Option 2 - No doubt, use the downloader.zip above - too easy. Actually makes it mindless 8-)

No luck with the fileleech - too many internal server error messages and you still have to have RIVA convert if you prefer MPG's like me.

Posted by: DHTML at March 5, 2006 6:15 PM

    Use mplayer

    http://ftp5.mplayerhq.hu/mplayer/releases/win32/

instead of those flv players. Mplayer will play just about every file type and doesn't need to be installed. Just unzip it to a folder and stick it on your desktop or anywhere you like. Open the flash vid by right clicking and choosing "open with" browse to mplayer.exe and select "always open with". Mplayer will let you drag and resize the video on the fly unlike most of the flv only players and is just a better solution for playing you flash vids all around.

Posted by: sirspocksalot at March 5, 2006 9:48 PM

"4. Right click the text in the red bar, select "Save Link As," and save the file as a .flv file. Firefox will rty to save it as "get_video.php," you need to change the ".php" to ".flv," and change the first part to whatever you prefer."

    did people miss this?

Posted by: grim at March 5, 2006 10:44 PM

when i attempt to right click and save it comes up as get_video and under files it ONLY says "all files", i.e. i'm not allowed to save it the way i'd like. dl'd both programs mentioned and having no luck. funny how something that should be so easy can be so hard.

    This is RIDICULOUS

    1) using Greasemonkey causes all sorts of problems

    2) Fileleecher has too many broken links

    3) Vdownload is corrupted and its zip file can't be opened

Does ANYONE know a good program to download and convert youtubes files?? Cause i'm getting pretty damned pissed. Thanks

    Posted by: Jonny.C at March 7, 2006 3:00 AM

Jonny C, you need to clean your system up, two of these options work for me. I first did the Greasemonkey and converted with Riva, then used the Vdownload and that worked great too. I haven't tried Fileleecher.

Posted by: Me at March 7, 2006 11:13 PM

Heres a nice site which lets you download from youTube, Google Video, Putfile, iFilm and heaps more!

    http://keepvid.com/

    Hope this helps!!

Posted by: joshau at March 8, 2006 5:22 PM

all of these have worked for me worked for me, i prefer vdownloader because it converts automatically, im not sure why your zip was corrupted

and skully, ITS SUPPOSED TO SAY "ALL FILES," all you have to do is add the extension, when you save it as all files, the whatever extension you put on will be what downloads

(I use Firefox normally) In case you can't work with Greasemonkey or any other reason you can get the video off IEs cache. Shame I can't do the same thing on FF. But the script works great (until now).

Posted by: Arheos at March 14, 2006 9:06 PM

I don't think this works anymore. I just tried http://www.youtube.com/get_video.php?video_id=3Dz8dMwCk7c and it was zero bytes. I know the video exists, but maybe YouTube changed something because of all the traffic resulting from digg.

Posted by: Adam at March 15, 2006 10:41 PM

    Same. Zero bytes.

I tried using greasemonkey too and it's the same. I think Youtube have changed the codes.

Hello everyone, I've realized that (and this may not give a good news but at leat tell you what the hell), you tube doesn't have only one server wich every video are saved, I have noticed that the videos that can be downloaded are those who belong to servers outside the "youtube direct domain", for example i cannot download a video called "webcam" or "kR9ZlF7Gr8Y" it comes from v179.youtube,com, instead another files from another domain as "youtube-336.vo.llnwd.net" wich let you download pretty much every video from that domain...

In conclusion, it's not that some programs work for some and for anothers no, it's just (believe so) the videos got differents protections, and you obviously are not downloading all the same file

the real question is: can anyone find out a form to get the files that belong to those servers that shit up our lives?

Posted by: mezc at April 13, 2006 10:50 PM

all the players / converters you suggested are PC only! except VLC but the current version has problems with FLV files. I checked with the developers!

so what do mac users do?

    Posted by: hearn9000 at April 20, 2006 10:06 AM

i have been cracking youtube's swf player for the past weeks and last month i got the code which you can download videos you open, i dont need any other scripts to download youtube's videos it's pretty easy typing the codes in the address bar rather than installing such toolbars.
but for poor people without the knowledge and tardy to get their brains up well, you got this site offering a script, go ahead... lol... just dont praise the creator, it's really easy..

Posted by: jayson at April 20, 2006 12:03 PM

If you don't have any other use for Greasemonkey, you could also just use bookmarklets to download the video clips. That doesn't involve installing anything and works just as well.

Check out the following site, for example:

    http://1024k.de/bookmarklets/video-bookmarklets.html

It has free bookmarklets for Google Video, YouTube and other media sites.

    REF. the new YouTube problem
While genius ppl work on new scripts that works dont forget U can still get the Youtube file.
First the video has to be loaded.
Then go to the Temporary Internet Files folder in the Windows folder.
Copy the file to a new directory, rename and add .flv at the end of the file name like thys: filename.flv
Its not recommended but if U really need the videos this is a temporarly solution.

This isn't working for me. It works up until I save it as a .flv I can't find the file and when I go to Firefox to Open it from the download window, it says it doesn't exist. Help please.

In youtube to me you can replace the line
    var video_url = download_url + video_id;

    with the lines
    var asdas = getEl("flashcontent").parentNode.parentNode.innerHTML.split("video_id=")[1].split("t=")[1].split("\"")[0];
    var tequals = '&t=';
    var video_url = download_url + video_id + tequals + asdas;

I havent tested this yet but it should work

Posted by: dfgdfgd at April 30, 2006 3:18 AM

www.keepvid.com works once more. I just tried it and downloaded some videos fro Youtube. The trick is to select Youtube from the drop down list FIRST, then enter the Youtube watch URL link in the space, then click download. Right click the link which comes up, click save target as (or for Firefox, 'save link as') and then click save. It should begin to download. When it's done, rename the file and be sure to include .flv at the end.

Posted by: Kash at April 30, 2006 4:24 AM

Oops.. it'll save it as a HTML file. But, it's still viewable if you click 'open with' and open it with a FLV player.

    Can someone get this fixed?

Just delete the .html part, it should look like this ".flv.html"

Click "yes" to change the file extension, and voila.

    Keepvid.com is working for me.

Seems like people having problem with renaming and stuff...why don't you try another download service ;)
    Heres what I found: http://zfreez.com/web/Ut.htm
You can download YouTube video from that site.
Unlike all other download service out there, the downloaded files from this site are in .flv format BY DEFAULT so you don't have to rename or change extension or anything. It also named your file according to the clip name at YouTube :)
    Give it a shot.

www.keepvid.com is working.. try it.. its very easy just copy the link of the video then paste it on the space provided by the site.. then click the download link...

then just rename it with videoname.flv extension.. make sure you have a flv player but most of flv player are too small, you can't maximaze the vid.. so i suggest to use a converter of flv to any kinds of vid in order for you to play it on windows media..
total video converter is a nice catch.. ",

Hello everybody! The date here is 5/5/06, and I have found a way to save YouTube videos. Simply open a video on a tab (just one, to keep things simple), let it download fully, then open a new tab and type about:cache?device=disk into the address bar. Copy the line (near the top) after the words "Cache Directory". Now open Explorer and paste that into the address bar there. Now you should see a folder with a lot of gibberish files, choose "View" from the toolbar and then "Details". Now that you have a lot more info, click "Date Modified" once or twice until the newest files are at the top. Now it's a simple matter of adding .flv to the name of the latest big file in that folder :)

Posted by: Tzarius at May 5, 2006 5:24 AM

Oh, you could probably do this with IE, but someone else can write those instructions ;)

Posted by: Tzarius at May 5, 2006 5:25 AM

Tzarius: I just dont get it >.Tzarius: I just dont get it >.
What do you mean by Copy the line (near the top) after the words "Cache Directory"?

    Attention all Mac users!!

If you are using Mac OS X (like myself) and are wondering how to get your own youtube videos in this sea of windows PC advice, try this:

    Get yourself Firefox. (Easy)
Once you have that go onto the mozilla website and look for the extensions tab at the top. Then click Firefox extensions, Look at the top extension downloads on the right you'll see video downloader at fourth (was at time of typing) get that and install onto Firefox: on top bar click: tools, extensions, Drag the Video downloader file onto the extension box and click install.

Restart Firefox. (Apple key and Q then re-open Firefox)

Right click on Firefox toolbar icons (stop, forward, back etc.), click customize then drag the Video downloader icon from the bottom (tee hee I said bottom! (English humour, don’t worry)) and put onto the icons toolbar.

Go to the video you like on the youtube website.

Open it up and then pause it (cuts down on lag). Now, click the icon that you have just put on your toolbar, this will now bring up a new window. Now right click on the download link button then select "save linked file as...” This will now bring up the "save file as" screen name the file what you want, then, put a ".flv" (without the (save quote marks) on the end, now save to desktop. Exam ple: mankillshimselfcozhecantsaveyoutubevidz.flv

Now it should bring up the download status window, which tells you stats like, how long left, amount downloaded and KBs. Once you have the file it looks blank and probably wont play on VLC (bastard I know.) so what you need is...

    iSquint.

Now, this is a Gucci piece of kit (really good) that converts FLV and more into mp4 to put on your screen or iPod! Once you have downloaded this and installed it open it up, drag the blank file onto the programme the press start. Depending on quality settings and file size it can take anywhere from couple of minutes to Real time Decoding (it done a 19mb video in about three minutes for me on standard) once finished open the file and enjoy! ...And rest...

I hope this has help the Mac users and some of the PC users that may be having difficulties as well. If it sounds a bit patronising I apologise, but remember that there maybe people out there that are doing this for the first time, and need to be taught how to suck an egg, so to speak. (no offence)

    Try these links...

    https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/

    Good luck everyone,

    Matt. :-)

you can download the total video converter here

If other methods don't work, you can watch the video and then grab the file directly from your browser's temp cache as well.
You will have to rename it to an .flv file. To check which temp file it is, you can just click on the file and open it with VLC viewer. The path to the file should be similar to this one.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\gz7rxtlm.default\Cache

VIEW YOUR VIDEOS ON A LARGE SCREEN FLV PLAYER!

I figured out an easy way to get the flv player to play large.

    1. download a video that has the size code available. I got one from google video.

    2. launch that video and click on the 2x zoom choice.

    3. Now pause that video and don't close it out. Now open your youtube folder and click on a video and drag (do not double click) the video into the large screen. The video will load and expand to fill that large screen!

If you close out the big screen, then next time just start with that "trigger" video again and then drag again.

    good luck

    Youtube has made some changes.
The youtube flash video file is now saved in the Local Settings\temp folder and is locked so that it cannot be copied while the Youtube player window exists.

If you close the Youtube player window, the file in the temp folder is deleted so one cannot save it.

Anyone have a fix for this?

Posted by: ee at August 3, 2006 5:27 AM

hemm...cant download from youtube now....dis sucks very much dude....anybody av an idea?

    Posted by: innocent_boi at August 4, 2006 12:20 AM

God-damn ... its so easy without messing around
    1) watch the video you want in the default player
    2) Find the file you d/loaded..stored in
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
...or similar to this,,,just search yout drive for "youtube"....
    3) copy and paste the file to your desktop, and rename it to whatever.avi , and play it in VLC media player

How to save vid that being flagged that is appropriate

video may contain content that is inappropriate for some users, as flagged by YouTube's user community.

To view this video, please verify you are 18 or older by logging in or signing up.

Posted by: suzy at August 5, 2006 9:06 AM

NEW Youtube Changes to stop downloads:
The Youtube video temp file is now locked so that it cannot be copied while the Youtube player is open. When you close the Youtube window, the file in the temp folder is deleted.
    SOLUTION:
    1) play the file in Youtube and leave the window open.
    2) pull the plug on your PC. (yes!) Youtube does not have time to delete temp file.
    3) restart.
    4) copy and rename file to xxx.flv and open in a .flv viewer program
NOT very elegant, but it works.

Posted by: andyb at August 6, 2006 9:14 AM

if you replay a video, you will see that the file HAS been stored locally somewhere - it "downloads" instantly.
So guys - where is it? Not in your temp folder, but...? where?

Posted by: andyb at August 6, 2006 9:16 AM

it works nigga. damn, a very laughable sort of an idea but it does work. but jus like u man im also surprised bout dat whole instant download thing durin a replay. need some work on it i guess huh. anyways thanx cuz.

    go to my computer.
    click tools.

uncheck the box that says " hide extensions for known file types".
there u go. now u can change the extension to flv.

Posted by: Pier at August 14, 2006 8:17 AM

Greasemonkey is the most popular method but it is NOT needed.

Play the UTube movie in your browser and after it completes downloading...

In C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\plugtmp-5\ there should be a file called "get_video" and has no extension.

Copy "get_video" to a different directory and rename the file with an .flv extension.
