Bethpage Black is one of only two public courses that has played host to the U.S. Open. The other is Torrey Pines near San Diego. Bethpage Black is open to the public, but it is recommended that only low-handicap players try it.

A couple of historical factors are working against Tiger Woods in his bid for a fourth U.S. Open championship and second at Bethpage Black. No player has won back-to-back titles since Curtis Strange in 1988 and ’89. And no player had won the Open two straight times on the same course since Willie Anderson won in 1901 and ’05 at Myopia Hunt Club in South Hamilton, Mass.

•Wondering about Rocco Mediate, who pushed Tiger Woods to a playoff last year before finishing second? His play this year suggests Mediate probably won’t be a factor. In 12 PGA Tour events this year, his best finish is a tie for 22nd.

•The field includes amateur Bronson Burgoon, who helped Texas A&M win its first NCAA golf championship last month.
