Malaysia Delays Caning (For Drinking Beer)

A Malaysian woman who got arrested for drinking beer and was sentenced to caning for her crime got a last second reprieve from the government there. But unfortunately it may be only temporary.

In a decision that many say hurt's Malaysia's reputation, they arrested this woman in a raid, and charged her with breaking the law by drinking alcohol, which is against the rules for Muslims there. She was sentenced to caning but at the last minute they decided to postpone the caning for the moment.

I try to be understanding of other people's cultures, and certainly I know this is not representative of all muslims, but it is hard to understand the justice of this decision. The woman herself says she believes the decision is fair, but it has caused an uproar around the world and perhaps now Malaysia will be forced to reconsider the caning, and their enforcement of Sharia law to this extent.

It seems that the Malaysian government wanted to be sure that the prisons could provide a person who knew how to give Kartika a 'gentle' caning without injuring her. I thought the whole idea of caning was that it should hurt otherwise why use a cane at all and why bother to inflict six lashes. Why not just slap her buttocks once with a wet Kipper? What utter nonsense this all is.
