Town Hall Disruptions, Health Care (VIDEO)

The news continues to buzz with footage from Town Hall meetings about health care, where members of Congress and other government representatives are being shouted down and bullied by angry mobs shut out any real conversation about the issues. And more details continue to emerge about how these town hall disruptions are being orchestrated and scripted.

It's now been documented that many of these protests are being orchestrated by a right-wing group named Americans for Prosperity, and another one named FreedomWorks which is headed by Dick Armey. These groups have been sending out emails telling people where to go so they can disrupt meetings, and giving talking points and strategies for how to ruin the meeting, as explained here.

The health care debate is very complicated and certainly beyond our expertise to take sides on here. But these protests at the town meetings, which are clearly just about theater for the cameras and accomplish nothing but stopping information from being shared, are doing no good for anybody. You should be against these shenanigans no matter what side you're on. If you are against this health care reform and you think the facts are on your side, then you should be happy to let all the facts be shared, instead of trying to shut up discussion and shout people down.

"Conservative groups critical of Democrats' overhaul proposals have created their own plans: sending out information such as links to search engines, lists that relayed the locations of upcoming town halls, confrontational questions to ask members of Congress and chants and slogans to use in and around the venues..."

These are just a bunch of right wing prejudice white americans living to suppress the rights of all other Americans. They should be ashame of themselves not allowing the issues to be heard in an unbiased and peaceful manner. They should be locked out of every meeting and let sensible individuals discuss the topic in an intelligent manner.

Hey Chewy, I suggest that you chew on this.
Firstly, don't believe what you read on the internet, especially from a site like this one.
Next, don't you realize that you've made a biggoted and racist remark? Aren't liberals the ones who preach tolerance and acceptance? Where's yours? Yes, these matters should be discussed openly and peacefully. It is called democracy, something that our President, Speakers of the House & Senate and the Chief of Staff seem to wish to destroy. Haven't you seen the White House website asking that names of people be sent to them in order to "correct any misinformation" on the health care issue. When was the last time the American government asked its people to spy & snitch on each other? McCarthyism went out in the 50's; now you only see this sort of thing in dictatorship run countries. That alone should send you a clear message about who is running the white house now. [And you're criticizing the right?]
Next, merely for the sake of arguement let's assume that these demonstrations are being organized by the ring wing. Our President got elected by using the exact same tactics. His specialty is organizing communities for political objectives. Don't you realize why ACORN received billions in the stimulis package? What do you think they do? They organize the left wing movement along with MoveOn and hundreds of others. Take a look at the internet and you'll see HUNDREDS of left wing groups organizing for the things they want. Pelosi, Reid and your ilk have the nerve to criticize others who are giving them a taste of there own medicine. And calling then Nazis?!?! Hypocrites because you and the rest of your party are simply unable to debate the issues on merit. So, you slander and suggest "locking them out of every meeting so 'sensible' individuals" can discuss. You contradict yourself so many times in one paragraph...I can't believe I'm even wasting my time writing; I can just imagine any reply I might receive.
Lastly, do yourself some good and get educated in what politics is really about. Its control. This health care issue has little if anything to do with health care. Everyone wants affordable healthcare for all Americans. If that was truly Obama's goal then the 45 million without coverage could have insurance for an estimated 29 billion. A drop in the bucket that could have simply been a part of the stimuless plan. But that didn't happen because this is about far more; controling you and me on what products will be sold. And, what we will have to do in order to receive the government controlled program. It already started with all the campaigns against food companies. If the current legislation goes through expect to be told how many hamburgers you'll be able to eat per month or else your cholesterol level will be too high for Uncle Sam to insure you. Or cake, or butter. Or, when you're 80 take a pain pill instead of the knee replacement.......oh, I just sense I'm wasting my time here with someone who is still experiencing his Obamagasm. One day it'll wear off and you'll roll over to find that you made a bad, bad choice. Meanwhile, make an effort to learn not to be a racist. Start by learning some humility. You're not as elite and intellectual as you would like to believe.

Why is it that when the liberal/socialist groups used the exact same tactics- including using them during the democratic party run for nomination last year- it was democracy speaking? But when others choose to do the same thing it's considered using nazi tactics.

Posted by: rich at August 10, 2009 4:47 PM

I think it is unfair that the democrats are only letting those who have limited spelling and grammar abilities on this listserv. Come on, not all repubs are idiots!

If the prposed HEALTH CARE PLAN is good for all AMERICANS......Will the President and all legislators accept the "plan" for themselves & their families ?? ( THEY ARE AMERICANS )

Posted by: RICHARD at August 10, 2009 5:01 PM

When Congress, the President and house go on the insurance they are trying to pawn off on the american taxpayer, I will believe it is a good plan. Otherwise, its just another way for them to put in socialism. OBAMA is just a big liar and I hope the people that voted for him gets their just rewards, unfortunately the good American people will have to suffer.

Posted by: Sonja at August 10, 2009 5:06 PM

I want the President and Congress to have the same Health Care I have. I also want them to be put on the Social Security rolls and to pay in like every American, myself included, does. Under the present system they will receive their salary when they leave office until they die! That is not right! Plus it comes from the General Fund - our tax dollars. If you truly want to fix Social Security and the Health Care issue make the Congress and President use the same system and get the same benefits as you. Given the way they have screwed the pooch on SS I am sure Health Care as they propose is no blessing! The better solution is to get rid of the entire bunch and put some people in there who truly have the common man in mind! Not people whose only thought is how much money can I make for doing my cronies favors! If you really believe the Federal Government has a clue about Health Care just look at the Indian Health Service record! Wake up America and stop drinking the Kool-aid!

I never thought I would live to see such as this. We are The United States of America... We were founded on the the belief the we each had a right to free speech, and if we worked hard we COULD prosper. We are not a socialist country, never was and pray God we never are...........

This is the most important issue at this time and people need answers to their questions - not a bunch of shouting ignorant rebel rousers who are attempting to impede on this process. If you are truly concerned about this health care plan then keep your ears open and your mouths shut. Open your minds and consider what you would do if you lost your job, your health insurance, and ability to get an insurance company to cover you, or your spouse, or your child who has a pre-existing conditon. I'm a disabled nurse on Medicare and I have been supporting a national health care plan for over 25 years. We almost lost our health insurance when our 11 year old daughter was diagnosed with cancer and my husband was laid off from his job for almost one year. I approached my hospital benefits director and asked about getting insurance through my employer and was told that it wouldn't cover my daughter or any pre-existing condition. Thank God he got hired back 2 weeks before we would have lost our insurance and she was able to undergo her second operation and one year of follow up care. We would have lost everything if he hadn't gotten called back. There are hundreds of thousands of people in the USA that are in this same situation. You could be in it too and what would you do?

Posted by: Marla at August 10, 2009 6:23 PM

It is not health care that is broken. What is broken and needs fixing is the GOVERNMENT. FROM THE FEDRAL TO THE LOCAL AND THE PRESS AND OR MEDIA.

Posted by: green at August 10, 2009 6:36 PM

Why not let the people vote on the bill (We will read it before we vote)

Posted by: Kay lucken at August 10, 2009 6:46 PM

Marla,

You say "keep your ears open and your mouth shut" if you are truly concerned about this health care plan. How dare you tell me or anyone to keep our mouths shut so you can do the talking. Yes, you have some issues that need to be addressed and that is called REFORM. We need to reform our existing laws to make sure everyone has access to health care but WE WILL NOT LET THE GOVERNMENT TAKE AWAY OUR EXISTING FREEDOMS. NEVER!! I have been through similar experiences as you having lost my 42 year old wife to breast cancer and being left alone to raise three young children. I had to pay, for many years, enormous medical bills. It was tough but I never once entertained the thought that the government should be my provider. I LOVE FREEDOM. When you tell me to shut up I will only shout louder.

My Prayer for America

Almighty God, Heavenly Father, Creator of the Universe, in the name of your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, by whom all things were made, please forgive me, for I am a dreadful sinner. I confess all of my sins before your eyes and your heavenly throne. I know my sins and weaknesses are all known as an open book before your eyes, and I beg your mercy, lovingkindness, and forgiveness for all of my sins, and any unclean thing that is within me. As King David proclaimed,
"Create in me a clean heart oh Lord, and renew a right spirit within me".

I come before your sovereign throne today, with humility and deep concern for the perils facing our Nation called America. This once great Nation, which was conceived in liberty, and built upon the rock of the words of your eternal Son. We have forgotten the foundation of your words, that all men are created equal, and endowed by your word with certain inalienable rights. We have forgotten that these rights come from you, and not from governments or from men.

This Nation is under assault on every side. Your word has been trampled under foot by those who would oppress the many, to serve the power, greed, conceit, lawlessness, and covetousness of the few. Indeed, your very name is under assault. We are told not to speak your name in public, for fear of reprisal. We are told that your laws are ancient and out-dated. We've given ourselves over to a seared conscience, and a reprobate mind. We know that your word says that there are certain things that you hate, yet we still practice them. A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood. We tolerate the murder of innocent babies in the womb. We tolerate and legalize all sorts of immorality under the guise of not being judgmental, or wanting to be politically correct, or wanting to raise revenue. We have forgotten that your laws are for the eternal good of men. They are inscribed on the monumental buildings in our Nation's capital, and were originally built as a testimony to you. They have become witness and a testimony against the hypocrisy and deceipt that are practiced within them. We have defiled your name, your word, your justice, and your righteous judgments, and we wonder why things have become the way they are? Did you not warn us of the consequences of choosing evil? We have only ourselves to blame.

I beg your forgiveness Father, in the name of your Son Jesus Christ, on behalf of our Nation. I beg that you would allow us to repent from our wicked ways, and to turn from the evil we see all around us. I beg that you would show us mercy, and lovingkindness, and restore our hearts and minds as a people. I pray that you would not lead us into temptation and sin, but deliver us from evil. The enemy is a liar, and the father of all lies. The enemy of our soul is also the enemy of America, and the enemy of freedom throughout the world. We know that your Son's shed blood on the Cross is an eternal testimony of freedom from the enemy and his desire to enslave mankind. Have mercy on us Lord, and help us turn from our iniquity and sin as a Nation, and return us as a people, to your word. For thy word is truth oh Lord. Your word is the eternal truth that this Nation was founded upon, and it is only the truth that makes us and will keep us free. Amen

Maria,
I am truly sorry for the problems you have faced, but government control of health care would have forced your daughter to wait for care maybe until it was too late. Those that deny longer wait times ignore the math: the sheer numbers of patients and shortage of health personnel. Government control will not encourage persons to join the ranks of health care professionals. So, the staffing shortage will only get worse. No solution is perfect, but government control is the least favorable solution.

Starting pay for a US Congressman is $169,000 per year. They have their private health care program which is the best in the world. They are not on our social security system. They voted themselves their own retirement plan and they retire with full pay plus cost of living increases for life. At death their retirement income goes to their spouse. They have many many percs plus secret service protection. No wonder they think they are so much better than we are. No wonder they look down on us and have the nerve to treat us like their slaves. These people are so out of touch with ordinary Americans that they are now living in fantasy land. This is why they must have control over us. They know that if we knew what they were doing to us that we would kick their fat asses out and replace them with ordiary people. Ordinary people who served us instead of ruled us. Ordianary people on the same health care as us. Ordinary people on the same social security plan as us. We are waking up and the time is coming when the sleaze and scum will be purged from our halls of liberty. We will vote them out. Stand up and shout. Do not be quiet.

Maybe the CHANGE we were promised is coming in 2010 and 2012? I vote every election. If this HC bill goes through it will not be because We The People did not read it. I will be reading the Congressional voting record when they get back to Washington DC. Then if there is a need to do so, I will volunteer to walk the streets - house-by-house to drum up the opposition. We need to "clean house" [and Senate].

Posted by: Jim at August 10, 2009 9:21 PM

Payoff and greed and power and control pretty well sum up what Congress is all about. When House members say that protestors are "Un-American, it tells me two things. Nancy and company are totally unaware of the Constitution and The Bill of Rights, and even if they were aware, they could care less. Two weeks ago, the House voted a "Pay as We Go" meaning NO more foolish spending. Last week the Senate voted to continue the "Junker-Clunker" program. Congress is incapable of even following the current laws that the ram thru.
I am an independant voter who has not been swayed by anyone, and I do not belong to any extreme right wing groups. I am opposed to Congress meddeling with health care for two big reasons.
#1. Obama and his cronies are pushing soooo hard to get it passed NOW before anyone can even examine the various aspects of this major legislation. Consequently he has convinced the congressional leadership to push real hard also. I think that they will push anything thru just to get it passed.
#2 When you compare what the candidate Obama said, and the president Obama is saying, there is no doubt that he is lying to the American people. If you disagree, look at what the candidate Obama said about Medicare Drug Prices and importing drugs from Europe and Canada, and the deal that president Obama and the White House struk with Billy Tauzin and PhRMA. Wow, if we cannot trust our leadership, who can we trust. Hey WASHINGTON, we can not longer afford your silly games by becoming enriched at our expense.

It's SO about time we "right-wingers" begin to take a strong stand. We have mostly just stood by and watched all the "left-wing" demonstrations and other political tactics happen, thinking "what fools". But you know... it worked. More often than not, they get their way.

Now that Bush is out of office, we can all be proud to lean to the right again. :-) Speak up and be heard! It's worked for the liberals now for years and it's about time we use something that works too.

My heavens people. What do you think is supposed to happen at town meetings. Are we there to merely nod our heads in agreement, then bow them in shame because we didn't have the guts to speak up? Is it so bad that we use the media to "hype" our cause? Is that tactic patended by the liberals or something?

What does it mean to write to our senators and congressmen? Are we doing this only to show approval? Not when approval is NOT to be had. They represent US. They need to know who we are and what they are to be representing. That's only done by making NOISE and being HEARD. This country needs a really good kick in the A** and it needs to happen soon.

-------------------------

I loved the prayer Ray. We all need to have more of that in our hearts because we could certainly use God's help in these matters.

I've loved this country all my life and it hurts to see our freedoms being taken away one by one, while many of us sit back and say, "it's best for all of us" or "it's the right thing to do." It's NEVER the right thing to do when your taking away freedom. There ARE other means to accomplish what's needed without taking away freedom.

May God bless you all and help you speak your mind in any items that matter to you.

Lets see. We complain about high insurance rates. We complain about co pays. We worry about how we will come up with the money to pay what the insurance does not cover. We have people in this country that do not have or can not afford insurance. Don't make like they do not exist. Thank God that you have a job and insurance. I hope that you will never find yourself in their shoes. A government run health care system with proper oversight can be more efficient then private health care. If the proper safe guards are in place. Free enterprise works well if there is a sense of competion. But when the competitors join forces and decide to see what they can charge and get away with. Then we no longer have the free enterprise system that provides the most bang for the buck. The consumer loses and big business makes record profits. A wise man once told me don't complain if you can not offer a solution. I see a lot of complaining in the town hall meetings. But no one seems to offer any creative or constructive solutions.Give your representives something to take back to Washington besides a bad experience.

Why do we really want to change something that is not broken. Most workers have good health care now. To chang to a nationalized health care system is not a good idea. All we need to do is look north to Canada and see how there system currenlty is working. Yes the prescription drugs are cheaper but the wait to receive major health care is very long. Do we really wnat this system? I don't think so!

Posted by: Napa vin at August 11, 2009 12:44 AM

Everybody knows that current PRIVATE healthcare insurance cost went up more than 70% last few years only. If it contines to only allow private healthcare company to run insurance, eventually,
most insurers may go bankruptcy soon.

Government competes with those Private healthcare insurance companies can stop this "price go up up" trend. Acoording to my experiences and what I heard, those current private healthcare insurance companies are profit driven only and they don't really have humanity about patient's sick or death.
