David Rowe Sandwich-Board Job Hunt

Another sign of how far we are from an economic recovery: As seen in the photo from the article below, a man named David Rowe in London has resorted to walking down the street wearing a sandwich board, as a last resort for finding a job in the financial sector.

Rowe, a 24-year old recent graduate, found that the shame of this desperate maneuver was outweighed by the debt hanging over his head from his college years, which were supposed to put him in line for a corporate job, but of course in today's climate that path is obstructed.

There are of course many working class people, and folks who didn't get a chance to go to collega at all, that are subjected to even more demeaning activities every day, so they can earn a living and support their family. So there is nothing uniquely tragic about what this young graduate is going through with his sandwich board job hunting. But nonetheless, I respect his perseverance and hope the many people of his generation facing this dilemma will soon see the economy turn around! See the article below for photos and more details on David Rowe.

David Rowe Sandwich-Board Job Hunt

ib times

In a pinstripe suit, silk tie and polished shoes, David Rowe has all the trappings of a successful London city worker, except for one stark difference -- he is wearing a sandwich board that says "JOB WANTED." As he walked down Fleet Street, home to legal firms and investment banks, the 24-year-old history graduate showed the human face behind the "lay-offs" and "recession" headlines...

A HUGE round of aplaud to this young man. I wonder...WHOM decides about the concept of 'demeaning work'and hiw is the level of 'demeaning work/activities'defined and measured. Could you possibly refrain from labeling work as demeaning thus facilitating the process of the demise of 'work stereotyping'. The psychological impact of unemployment already has near catastrophic results, that could negatively influence, especially children for quite a number of years to come. Replace demeaning work with creative work, moreover...SUPPORT the creative workers(cirminals excluded, it goes without saying)

Too Bad. My heart bleeds for you about as much as seeing Donald Trump fire an overly arrogant aspiring executive. Continue walking the streets and see how the real world lives.Maybe you'll gain some real education. College Education is great but it's no guarantee. At your age you should be thinking more creatively and not trying to gain employement through acts designed to generate sympathy. The correct place for sympathy in this situation is in the ictionary...between syphilis and shit!

being a single mother who works a day job, takes in typing and cleans apartments, I think what David is doing is admirable. He wants to work and is being innovative in his approach. Good for him. I hope he wins the job of his dreams.

Posted by: camille at September 23, 2009 7:42 AM

I'm sure someone employed him already , because he is moving forward, and nothing is stopping him,''Good luck,,

Posted by: Anonymous at September 23, 2009 7:49 AM

Interesting approach ? but shouldn't this guy be looking to teach rather than work in the financial sector ? History majors and Wall Street have nothing in common .

Posted by: Anonymous at September 23, 2009 7:54 AM

If more on Wall Street knew their history, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in!

Posted by: Anonymous at September 23, 2009 8:08 AM

lets spend more time helping less time talking...
.oops just caught myself again.....

Posted by: Anonymous at September 23, 2009 8:27 AM

i did the same thing on the streets of San Francisco a few years ago. Was featured in the USA today newspaper.

I eventually moved and obtained employment. I am now a clerk in NY with the NYS Dept of State Codes Division.

I'd encourage him and any others to use this and other methods to achieve thier dreams and fulfill thier personal and societal obligations.

Posted by: Michael Saafir at September 23, 2009 8:28 AM

I applaude him - it shows that he is a real go-getter, not sitting around at home waiting for things to happen!

Posted by: Yesmia at September 23, 2009 8:50 AM

I admire him for taking control of the situation and trying to make something happen. I would imagine potential employers would want that in an employee - not taking 'no' for an answer. Doing what he has to do to get employed. Good for him!

Posted by: MikeL at September 23, 2009 8:56 AM

David Rowe is at least trying and that's more than I can say for so many slackers I see around his age, who are just sitting back waiting for a hand out.

I hope someone has hired this young man who has the gumption to get out there and literally pound the pavement. I agree with a previous poster, if more on Wall Street knew their history, we would not be in the mess we're in.

Too bad another poster has such a heinous attitude on David's efforts. Too many people share such negativity, contributing to more of the social mess we're in.

I wish David the best. Such tenaciousness probably indicates a serious work ethic.

Uh, if you want to go to college and
get a job when you graduate DON'T MAJOR
IN HISTORY.

Posted by: Mike at September 23, 2009 9:29 AM

If you want to be able to think after you graduate college, then go to a liberal arts college, but get a business degree. If you want to be an uneducated drone get a technical degree from one of the diploma mills.

Posted by: Anonymous at September 23, 2009 9:47 AM

To Jezebel,

Try putting a more positive note on things. You have to do what you have to do. If this guy felt this was the only way to get it done then so be it. At least he is putting himself out there and trying to make a better situation. If is created sympathy and helped raise awareness..... great......too many people are not thinking in a positive manner and simply try to avoid their problems.......in all aspects.....not just the economy. I work as a doctor on one of the largest Indian Reservations in the world and trust me there are plenty of able bodied individuals using YOUR tax dollars in very unproductive ways. I personally wish this guy the best!!!!

I totally admire this person and am encouraged to do the same...I am so tired and weary of Cover letters for the past 5 years! Am grateful for the motivation. I too applaud him.

To "Too Bad. My heart bleeds for you..."
Desperate situations call for desperate measures.
I think this man has guts going out and doing this. I`d like to see what you`d do in similar circumstances...

A lot of people can identify with this young man, I am sure. However, when it comes to facing reality, we may have to resort to doing something else other than what we have been trained for - i.e., work in a restaurant, clean houses, babysit, yardwork, etc., to put the money in our pockets and pay our bills. Here I am at age 65, lost my job of 4 years in 2007, however, God was in my corner as He gave me work from a family member and then the family member told an attorney about me and I was hired pretty much on the spot. Within 9 months, I was working for myself as I had started my own company, an LLC, and became an independent contractor which I love because I work for myself and make more money than I did working full time for a law firm, plus I have mornings off as I only work in the afternoons. You do what you got to do until things turn around. Keep a smile in your pocket as my Aunt Willie used to tell me and keep on going. There is always something someone can do to earn an honest living. It may not be what you want at the time but as long as it is honest, legal and moral - I am up for it! I was taught a strong work ethic from my grandparents after my Mom died when I was 7 years old and I am still going with lots of energy, thanks be to God. Keep on by keeping on and stay busy is the name of the game. God will supply our needs. There is a difference in needs and wants. Strong work builds true character.

What job in the corporate world is he going after? Is he stupid? History buffs don't work in the "corporate world," people with skills do.

Posted by: Dan at September 23, 2009 10:45 AM

Good on him using initiative and trying something different. What about all the migrants waiting at calais to come to England as they know the government gives genorous handouts. It is so wrong how the middle class in this country suffer. If your rich you have enough money for nothing to affect you, if your poor you get benefits, which means lazy bastards play the system. The rules regulations and benefits of this country suck. There should be a middle class uprising as the average working class man or woman struggles to eek there way through life in England. Whos with me?

Posted by: gavin at September 23, 2009 10:53 AM

Hope it worked. To the negative posters get a life.

Posted by: Anonymous at September 23, 2009 11:22 AM

A SMART person would make money work for them, not go out and work for money and live paycheck to paycheck like 90% of the people in the rat race do. Ever read "Rich Dad Poor Dad"? I got a lot of good ideas from it and things are doing better for me now.

Essentially, the job market is in the proverbial "doldrums." If someone can do something to create some kind of attention for him/herself, then that's fantastic. I've read quite a bit of negative criticism about this fellow. It seems to me that if someone does an "act" that could be construed as desperate or degrading to him/herself, we (Westerners, that is)for the most part, want to bash and criticize that person. Why? Personally, I feel that Westerners have a serious problem with being compassionate for others. We're socialized to be individualistic--and we believe there is no place in this world for the "weak."

Congratulations to him. Years ago when we had a long transit strike in New York and I worked on Wall Street I stood on the corner of Broadway and 14th Street with a nice white sign with a happy fact on it saying Wall St. I was picked up every day in a variety of vehicles, sometimes the same vehicle. One day a cop even asked someone to give me a ride in their truck. So nice things do happen to people who try!

Posted by: Carole at September 23, 2009 11:47 AM

Hmmmm? I wonder instead of spending his time all day walking up and down the street begging for a job, maybe he should be spending him time in more productive endeavors like searching online job search sites, researching and applying to companies, doing extensive networking, meeting people, practicing his interviewing skills, participating in job search clubs, volunteering his free time to help others, etc.

I myself would question what skill and JUDGEMENT he would bring to my organization if this is the only way he can find work.

But that is just my 'two cents'

Posted by: ??? !!! ??? at September 23, 2009 11:59 AM

Having done most of the "alernatives" you listed above, I can tell you he is probably doing this as a way to get some sort of reaction/feedback. On-line sites are visited by millions; you are just one of many.
Have YOU looked for work lately?

Interesting approach but ..hey whatever works, right. You know if I tried something like that it would be just my luck that the only employer to approach me would be one of those companies that put people on street corners waving signs and wearing penguine costumes. Not interested. Oh and to the writer putting in his or hers two cents... mom is that you? Still giving out lame advise as if you've been there and done that I see.

Posted by: Jim at September 23, 2009 12:29 PM

This guy is lazy and is just looking for a handout. He is many steps ahead of the game because he has the degree and the clothes to impress on an interview. With a messed up personality like his, I dont doubt why he isnt getting jobs. Anyone who thinks its better to run around complaining about not getting a job or begging for a job needs to take a good look at them selves and make adjustments. Also...why the hell would you get a history major? Besides the huge job market and large amount of the historian labor force retiring early....oh wait.....wow some people are idiots. Join the forces, go to Afghanistan. Your idiot General is on the radio right now boasting about how he raised the troop level from 4500 to 9000 troops in afghanistan....wooooooooo...Thank you london for contributing to 5% of the effort...how bout MR. History major put on the uniform and become an officer.

If you have ever gone to University it is a long hull of work and not easy to accomplish that degree. You can have a degree in basket weaving...it proves you have the abiltiy to learn, format thoughts and sentences and drive to complete the end of the means. I am saying there are transferable skills to apply to any job you seek after graduation. This guy is more creative than most.

Good for David! He graduated college and that in itself should be applauded! In today's economy I respect the fact that he is a "pavement pounder" and is wanting to use his hard-earned education to begin a career he has dreamed of. A lot of the younger population isn't as proactive as David and are sitting at home looking for a hand-out. Hats off to David!

Posted by: Katie Smith at September 23, 2009 2:54 PM

I think it is inventive and hope it works out though it does seem strange that he is looking for a wall street job with a history major. To each their own. On a side note I saw one poster saying that she takes in typing and I was wondering where you can find legitimate jobs in that- I've been searching the internet and not found something that didn't look shady yet. :)
