Man Buried in Pontiac Catalina

I've heard of big expensive coffins before, but getting buried in a Pontiac Catalina? That's exactly what one man did yesterday in South Carolina.

Lonnie Holloway lived to the ripe old age of 90, and was a car lover all his life long, so he had talked for years about getting buried in his Pontiac Catalina, and when he finally passe his family and friends made sure he got his wish.. see the article below for details.

Gotta love the man for doing things his own way in grand style, and his family for rolling with it and making it happen..must have been a special man to know!

Lonnie Holloway was laid to rest at the age of 90 in his 1973 Pontiac Catalina Tuesday.

He believed in certain things, and what he believed in, he was going to carry it out. Lonnie Holloway made sure his wishes were granted up until the end.

There was a woman in Tiverton RI in 1998 who was buried in her 1962 Corvair which she was known to drive around town in. She was in Time magazine for this very thing. I always thought it was a cool way to be buried.

If he got his wish, good for him! If the oil & gas were drained, it should not have been an environmental concern. What I think is he was very selfish. If the car had been in excellent condition, low mileage, reconditioned, low mileage, etc., it may have been worth $20,000 or more to a collector. It doesn't say what kind or how many guns were included but they, too, may have been worth a considerable amount of money. And, of course, he had to have probably four cemetary plots due to the size of the car. What about his heirs? The cost of the funeral probably exceeded $50,000 to $60,000 easily where a single plot and casket would have been $5,000 to $8,000. What a waste of money, especially in this day when so many people are struggling to make ends meet. I understand he got a haircut every Wednesday and Saturday so he was used to wasting money anyway. One of his grandkids or great-grandkids could have gone to college for what he squandered! Or he could have fed 4 or 5 families of 4 each for a year if he had ever thought of anyone but himself. What a waste!

Hey Paladin, I hope he took all his money with him as well. That way, the vultures in the family won't have anything to fight over. And believe me, every family has it's vultures. Sounds like you would be the one in yours.

To Dave Zimmer: No, I'm not a vulture at all. I'm sorry you don't have the mental capacity to understand my post. I'll try to explain it to you. I try to help other people rather than think of only myself. I hate waste, of any kind. I hate people that try to twist things because they can't understand the true meaning. Why don't you try to think of what your family deprived you of, such as common sense, manners and intelligence. Now, do I have to explain the meaning of intelligence to you?

We had one guy in Aurora, Indiana back in the late 80's-early 90's bury his wife in her early 70's caddy eldorado convertible. By law they had to make a giant concrete vault to encapsulate the thing!!

This is to Bob Russ... I resent your tree hugging hippie coment !! That just proves how ignorant you are !! Have you ever once seen a hippie hugging a damn tree?? Caring about the enviroment DOES NOT make you a tree hugging hippie!! Not caring about the enviroment makes you an ignorant FOOL!!

I cannot believe that the state actually let them do this.. Whomever was responsible for doing this needs to have their heads examined..that is just foolish... I dont care what the person wanted. There will goofballs out there trying to dig that car up and steal those gun someday. You watch and see. Nothing is impossible in this day an age.. Totally crazy people that would want to see that happen. There is nothing great about someone being buried in their car.. Come on People!

Posted by: glenda ledbetter at September 9, 2009 8:31 PM

Good for him.

SOOOOO cool.

Posted by: Norma Jean at September 9, 2009 9:45 PM

People... stop arguing about nonsense... Seriously, Mr. Holloway wanted to be buried in the car he loved, and took the guns because he didn't want them to be responsible for taking any lives... That is honorable, and yes people might try and dig them up, but we can only hope that they don't... and I believe they encapsulate the car in concrete... But those were his wishes and they were reasonable and they should be carried out... My best friend committed suicide last summer and he wanted to be cremated, but his family was UBER Christian and they did not want to, and they didn't...and to this day it still upsets me and fills me with rage that they didn't carry out his last wish...
So lets just hope that Mr. Holloway is wherever he hoped to be, and that he is happy knowing he was buried in the car he loved...

to glenda ledbetter get a life, qudos to the family for doing what their father wanted, the car brought happiness to this man. The only happiness you bring people, is when you leave a room, and what's it to you? did this adversly affect your life in any way, how much sleep do you lose over it, his family cared for their father, i take your family doesn't really give a crap for you. get a life,
