Marian McQuade 15 Children

Who is Marian McQuade? Marian McQuade was the mother of 15 children who became famous as the founder of Grandparents Day.

Marian, who raised 15 kids of her own and then was blessed with 43 grandchildren, was inspired to honor her fellow grandparents after working with the elderly and seeing how unappreciated they were. She campained for this grandparent's holiday throughout the 70s, and on into recent years, hoping to have a national Grandparents Day established.

Many of her children and grandchildren now carry on promoting the cause, hoping that everyone in America will give grandparents their proper respects, at least just for one day!

Marian McQuade began her campaign for a day honoring grandparents in the early 1970s, decades after she first visited nursing homes and the home-bound elderly. As a girl, she would go with her grandmother to take food and small gifts to senior neighbors. Many of them had no other friends nearby. "It's not for grandparents like me to get presents," McQuade said of her idea for a National Grandparents Day in a 2003 interview with The Times. "It's to alleviate some loneliness..."
