"Berlin Heart," Charles Tillman & Washington

After all the negative press we're accustomed to from NFL players, it's a joy to read this news about Bears star Charles Tillman, who is in Washington this week to tell members of Congress about the medical device called a "Berlin Heart," and how it saved the live of his baby daughter Tiana.

Charles Tillman's daughter was born with a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy, which meant a heart transplant was necessary, and with surgery to implant the Berlin Heart doctors were able to prolong her life until a transplant was found.

Hopefuflly Charles Tillman's time in Washington can help bring health care advancements like the Berlin Heart to more heart-disease patients! For more info see the article:

When Charles Tillman was asked to speak to Congress in Washington about the Berlin Heart, the Bears cornerback didn't hesitate to accept the invitation. A year ago, the revolutionary device kept his infant daughter, Tiana, alive while she awaited a heart transplant that saved her life...

As a fan, I generally look at you (Charles) as just a Chicago Bear, but like many of them, you're a father as well, a regular person, who just happens to play football for a living. Not as a fan, but as a fellow person, I pray for the best for your family and daughter. -John Fechter

It really shows Mr. Tillman is solid guy with a heart to care enough to let other people know how this "Berlin Heart" could make a difference in others's lives. Nice to hear about great character of a role model. Alot of people would keep issues like this private so Im glad he's he's putting this procedure on the map for others to explore. Thanks!!

But God is so good to continue to bless the medical field with the advancements nessacary to prolong the life of these angels here on Earth. I am so proud to hear that your daughter is doing well. God will always be there for each and every one of us, especially your daughter. I will pray and continue to pray and give thanks to God for the love he has shown and distributed to you for your daughter so that you can love. I will pray also for you and your family, asking for protection, good health, love and understanding to each other. God is great and his will is everlasting. Your faith is the key to your continued blessings. Remember God is our root to our strength and our lives and he knows all. Thank you for sharing, you could have wanted to remain private but who knows who this could help? I have been told I need a heart transplant at 58 and I really don't want to ,because of horrible treatment after a valve surgery in Dallas and Houston TX. Iknow things will be better and better for your child because so many people are praying and wishing the best for her total recovery.

My daughter also suffers from dilated cardiomyopathy and the fear and pain it causes families is outstanding. She was diagnosed at 5 months and luckily with medication is still here at 11. I think it is wonderful of you to use your fame in such a positive way to help other children just like Tiana. It is a rare thing for NFL players to be highlighted doing the good and not the bad. Thank you Charles for advocating on behalf of all cardiomyopathy families.

As a father, I completely sympathize for Tillman and his family and totally respect and support him 100% by spreading awareness of the Berlin Heart. I hope it will shed more light on more options for heart surgery and health in general. Good Luck Tillman.

Posted by: Anonymous at October 27, 2009 11:47 AM

Mr. Tillman:
First I say Praise Be To God for His wealth of knowledge He has instilled in the physicians hands.
Secondly, I ask that you ignore the negative comments about God. You know who is the Author and Finisher of your faith.
May your family continue to be Blessed. Keep your hands in the Masters Hands and He will surely take care of you and your family.
Knock and it shall be answered, Seek and you shall find, Open the door to your heart and He will come in and sup with you.
You and your family faces are stained in the palm of His hand. And nothing and no one can pluck you out.
The Love that has been shown to you and your family tells you that you are the apple of His eye.

And yes, you negative nay sayers. Take your negativity and place it somewhere else. These are God children who are speaking out and you have no place in here.

John 8:44 clearly state that Your father is the Author of Lies. And you are his children. If you want to find out your fathers name read the
scripture. In case you have a difficult time
understanding the Written Word of God...Your
father's name is satan, the evil one, the devil. He does not deserve to have his name capitalized.
Be Gone, you deserve to be under our feet just
like your father.

All Honor and Glory belong to God for His Wonderful Mercies upon Tiana. Mr. Tillman, please
stay involved with the Lord. He has more in store for you and your family.
Love In Christ - Your Sister in the Lord

How Christian of you Allean to say that the negative people should be put under foot. You don't have to believe in god to wish the Tillman family well.

Posted by: Looma at October 27, 2009 12:02 PM

To the Tillman Family: Thank God for Tiana's blessing. Now the term "bless her heart" will have new meaning for you. Keep on fighting for your child and others who need these type of medical advances.
To Kane Alexander's Family: It takes a special person to be want the best for another child especially when your own child has passed on due to a similar circumstance. May the Lord comfort and keep you.
To "who cares": You must really make your family proud with that comment. Whether it was from lack of compassion, ignorance for just plain meaness....what a sad way to be. These words will burn in your memory when your time of need comes. Then you really may wonder "who cares".

I am the Mother of an organ donor and I wish you and Tiana and your family well. It gives our family great comfort to know the good that comes from being a donor family. Our loss was awful and there is not a day that goes by that my son is not in my thoughts, but my thoughts also go to the recipients of his gifts and to all organ recipients. It is such a blessing to see recipients living normal, active lives when they were so desperately ill before their transplants.

Posted by: Cathy McCall at October 27, 2009 12:57 PM

I'm glad everything worked out for his daughter with out a doubt. But this shows yet another instance that it takes money in order to survive or get any kind of medical help. In this instance you can't tag a price on a human life. But it is always tagged in order for it to be sustainded.

What a wonderful story. As a social worker in a renal dialysis unit, I hope this helps encourage more research for this type of life saving technology. Not just for hearts, but Kidneys, livers, lungs, pancreas... And the technology would be wasted if not for organ donors. I would encourage everyone to be a donor organ when you are done with your organs. Most importantly, make sure people know you are a donor! Thank you for all that are already donors.

What a pathetic bunch. Just using another chance to praise god(s)and plug religious message. How about sticking with the subject at hand: science and the ones who advance it every day. Be assured that most of them don't depend on faith like you all. It does not depend on your prayers or it would work every time, why my child, not your's? Stop accepting all the good and bad with the same explanation. Inform yourself instead, and don't pretend you did something about injustice, misery, and a child dying every few minutes somewhere in the world because you 'prayed'!
