Chris Farley Ad Controversy (VIDEO)

A TV ad featuring David Spade with the late Chris Farley is causing controversy, as fans of Farley say it is an inappropriate usage of the dead star's likeness.

Many are decrying the ad as being in bad taste, but David Spade insists there shoold be no issue, as Farley's family approved the ad and Farley was a close friend of his. Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with the ad in theory, and I'm Chris Farley wouldn't mind his best friend and family doing this, but the way the Direct TV ad plays out does feel a little weird and morbid. I'd file this as an okay idea that was just badly executed.

The Chris Farley ad controversy wages on - by now you've seen the DirecTV Chris Farley ad, featuring a scene from Tommy Boy, with the late Farley and very-much-alive-and-collecting-a-paycheck David Spade. David Spade isn't backing down on this one - while many weigh in on the Chris Farley ad controversy as being in poor taste, Spade maintains it's a great tribute and that Farley's family gave the okay to do the DirecTV ad...

Really people, who really has time to complain about something like that. Get a life people.

Seriously... get over the fact they used a movie he had done. It's a character.the fact is that dead celebrities footage, photos, voice overs and such are widely used. Seems to me that people just want to be offended. If that's the case, it's your feelings and they really have no bearing on us. Have fun being pissed and dissed

I thought it was terrible when I saw it. Not only bad taste, but a bad ad.

Posted by: Kat at October 31, 2009 5:24 PM

I don't see what the big deal is. I'm certain that he and Spade were close enough that Spade would know if his friend would have wanted him to have used that footage for the ad. Farley's whole career revolved around self-denegrating humor, for goodness sakes! I totally agree with theplune above...people thrive on being offended these days. Guess what? The constitution does not guarantee you freedom from being offended. You don't like something on TV, change the friggin chanel already or throw the thing away.

I have no problem with the Ad, it's a classic movie and I enjoy any chance to see the late great Farley any time he is shown. All these people that have been so "offended" better cut all media communication with the onslot of Michael Jackson stuff coming soon

I agree. No big deal. There are sooo many other problems in this world now. It was actually a joy to see Chris Farley in the commercial. It reminded me how funny he was and how movies and people should be as funny as that now instead of "being offended" or so "politically correct".
C'mon people, enjoy life. Laugh, Live, Love,
Nan

For real? getting "offended" over that is stupid! Everyone is looking to cry about something. Did it offend you when your mom told you that you were a disgrace for crying about everything?

Really... you have a remote control. If you don't like it then turn the TV off and go for a walk or at least change the channel... these people really have to get over themselves!!! And if some lawyer gets a hair up his ass to support someone on a lawsuit over this then I hope a meteorite falls from the sky and smashes them right in their stupid head!

The fact that the clip of Chris Farley was used in this commercial with the approval of his family is all that matters. For others, it's really none of their damn business.

Awesome commercial. I love the movie and David Spade even mentions at the end of the ad, "that never gets old". A comment of respect to his lost dear friend. People who complained about this Direct TV ad need to get real and shut the H E double hockey sticks up!! Good job Direct TV

I thought at first it was odd but then I realized it helped me to remember how much I missed his greatness and that it was nice to see him again....make another ad and put the skit of him and patrick dancing from SNL or some other skit .....KEEP HIS TALENT GOING This honors him not hurts him ......bad taste this is not to me bad taste is Hpyloric acids....use your remote if you don't like it!!!

You folks freaking kill me. Spade had already talked with Farley's brother and everyone was ok with the ad. Spade also commented that he thought it was a great way to remind everyone how funny Farley was and he thought his friend would be stoked over the whole concept. Get a life, turn the channel, and do your best to stop perpetuating the world's stance that nobody can be offended by anything.

Case closed you freaks!

I'm a huge fan of the late and great Chris Farley and feel it is in incredibly bad taste. I'm not offended per se but have some respect for him. Spade is being a sellout.

Offended? Really people, I agree, get a life. Look how often they have used Michael Jackson footage since his death. I don't know, guess its just the people who have sometype of internal issues with themselves, but feel better when they take it out on other people.

Chris Farley sucked, not as much as people who piss and moan over something this gay.

Posted by: kola at November 1, 2009 1:27 AM

Come on people......Have these people seen TommyBoy?.....It stands as one of Farley's best...I think it's a great homage to the man that was Farley......even in the commercial, Spade laughs and says..."never gets old"....It's true...after seeing the commercial I re-watched TommyBoy, and laughed like it was the first time....give it a rest, find something better to complain about!

No greater honor can be is to be remembered, Chris Farley and Spade were friends like Belushi and Ackroyd, Spade was in no way being disrespectful in no way at all. Money really a sell out? hey if Chris was alive he would want his Buddy Spade to go on and be happy some of you freaks who attack are closed minded and silly.
