Presidents Who Have Won Nobel? Carter, Roosevelt, Wilson...

Barack Obama's surprising win of the Nobel Peace Prize has everybody talking, but how unusual is it for a president to win the prize? As turns out, quite a number of other presidents have won the honor during their term, including Carter, Roosevelt and WIlson.

As seen in the article below. Jimmy Carter won the prize long after his presidency, in 2002, or his tireless efforts towards diplomacy since he left office. Woodrow Wilson won for his work in 1919 relating to World War 1, and Teddy roosevelt won in 1905 for his role in ending the war between Japan and Russia.

So it could be fair to say that these other presidents won the Nobel prize for concrete achievements, where Obama seems to have won more for what he represents in a different sense, and the potential he embodies..I think he was right to take this award as a "call to action" and I hope the rest of his term will prove worthy of the prize, and that he proves the haters wrong..

It's a joke. It's no longer Nobel Peace Prize, but BS Prize. Just like winning a marathon race by just thinking about running a marathon someday.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND! I SERVED 24 1/2 YEARS PROTECTING THIS COUNTRY AND IT MAKES ME ILL TO READ AND TO HERE SO CALL AMERICANS BAD MOUTH THE LEADER OF THIS COUNTRY.NO WONDER OTHER SECOUND CLASS COUNTRIES AND LEADERS DON'T RESPECT US. MOM ALWAYS TOLD ME THAT LOVE BEGINS AT HOME THEN SPREAD ABROAD.
I REALLY DON'T CARE WHO IT IS, IF ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE TO LEAD THIS COUNTRY I WILL BACK THEM.
GET WITH THE PROGRAM! THIS IS 2009.THIS REMINDS ME OF WHAT JESUS SAID: A PROPHET WILL FIND LESS HONOR IN HIS HOME THAN HE WILL ABROAD.
HOW TRUE A STATEMENT DID MY LORD AND SAVIOR MAKE OVER 2000 YEARS AGO.

I'm with Anthony. A countryman, a fellow American, our president, just won the Nobel Peace Prize. I'm proud of him for it. Please read the comments of the Nobel committee to hear their reasons why. They make sense. Quit hating the president, start listening to what he's saying and open your minds to what he really is: a worthy, intelligent, well-respected leader.

Congrats Mr. President. You people are very rude. President Obama did not start the war. Remember George Bush, he's the guilty one, people..for sure he won't ever win that "peace prize"

Posted by: cristina at October 9, 2009 9:21 PM

I completely agree with you Anthony. I too follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and I will always back any President duly elected by the people of the United States and right that happens to be Barack Obama....my President.

A special award, to a special president and leader. Quite a acheivement given the previously infamous ill producing respect, earned from the last eight years.

"It seems so inappropriate, so premature, that it gives sustenance to critics who say he's a celebrity honored for his existence and aspirations, not for his accomplishments," says Thomas Mann of the Brookings Institution.

"With friends like the prize committee," Mann says, "who needs enemies?"

Thank You Anthony!

I agree; it's time to stop for the Haters to WAKE UP! The least the haters could do, if they ARE "religious folks", is to pray for Obama. I Love President Obama, and because he is the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,my belief is to Respect him as such. If anti-Obama folks don't stop hating, they hurt themselves and bring down the whole country. Obviously the rest of the World is impressed with Obama. Obviously they see something that you don't see, because you are blinded by hate. All I'm saying, is that it's time to R*E*S*P*E*C*T. the President of the United States of America. It sickens me to hear people say such horrible things about Obama. HE IS OUR PRESIDENT. I believe that a person can speak as free;y as they please, but speake respectfully please. We ARE a civilized Nation, after all. (Aren't we?)It's time to GET OVER IT!

Obama has done NOTHING to earn the Nobel Peace Prize, and it has now become a worthless parody of what it once was.
Sad, really.
WHAT did he do to "earn" it, by the way??
I would really like to know.

Posted by: Sheryl at October 9, 2009 11:50 PM

I agree with Anthony 100% the people have no respect for the leader of our country anymore. It's sure not what it used to be in this country. It is going to hell in a hand basket. People may not agree or like him, but they need to respect him as our leader. Go to another country and live see how ya like that for a while.

Question? Why is it that if you disagree with this President or Congress you are a hater? That wasn't true when you disagreed with Bush or Clinton. Too many times people refer to Mr. Obama as the "Hope" and itimate he is a savior of this nation. Some do it in a way of putting him on a pedistal or as a insult. He is a man trying to do things right and will still do things wrong. The only true hope I have is Jesus. The only saviour I know of Jesus. I don't agree with him, but don't hate him. I didn't agree with Bush 100% either. I didn't hate him either.

Yes he deserves it. The world loves USA more trhan befiore and people in opther countries have more respect for USA. Those who are talking crap are either Bush's fan or Republicans..lol

Carter deserved a Nobel. Wilson and Rosevelt were president before I was born so I won't comment.
The thought of Obama getting a Nobel makes me sick and I now wonder about the selection committee. Who is next, Bush or Palin?

Posted by: Disgusted at October 10, 2009 12:51 PM

Honestly, all you people should grow up and stop debating on matters that you, or I, cannot do anything about. I mean really, how old are you guys anyways? Get over it.

All the bad comments about Obama have finally convinced me of one thing. Guess what?

There is intelligent life in the universe-elsewhere! God or the universe or whatever did not expend all this effort just to create the obviously pathetic excuse that passes for life on this planet. What other creatures could say such horrible things about the leader of the greatest country on earth
Some of the things I've come across have been so utterly vile & disgusting, some written by a man named Steve Russell, another by a man named Macallister. He either finds or makes up horribly vile jokes & posts them on the web. His email address is ----------smac1382@bellsouth.net I feel if people are going to spread dirt, lies and spite that they should be held responsible for it. But Mr. MavAllister simply continues to spread through his lies and inuendoes and thinly disguised joked all manner of deratory comments toward President Obama. This is not only not proper behavior. I'm not even sure it's even legal. If he hasn't crossed the line yet he is surely going to, sooner or later. He's a nasty little man!
