Sweetest Day: How to Celebrate

Today is not just any day, today is Sweetest Day! And what is sweetest day, you ask? Well here's the scoop on the sweetness:

Sweetest day, not to be confused with Valentine's Day, is basically a holiday concocted by candy and chocolate manufacturers, to give us an excuse to buy chocolate and candy not for some corny romantic reasons, but simply for the love of chocolate itself! So on the one hand yes, this is crass commercialism at its worst. But on the other hand....CHOCOLATE!!!! You know you love chocolate.

You are encouraged to celebrate this sweetest of days by sending chocolate to a loved one, or try out some new cookie or cookie or cake recipes, or maybe some pudding or home made ice cream? Or you can just spend the whole day eating desserts on some candy and cookies yourself. And then we can all celebrate "Do Six Hours of Cardio" Day together on Sunday to make up for it.

This year, Sweetest Day is celebrated on Saturday, October 17, 2009.

Sometimes criticized as a "Hallmark holiday", Sweetest Day was first organized by candy manufacturers to promote the health benefits of eating candy and chocolate everyday! And why not? Today, Sweetest Day is a great way to brighten any a gloomy October day...add a personal touch by baking up a batch of chocolate or cookies as a thoughtful homemade gift, or try some fresh apple cider and a slice of pumpkin pie.

I, honestly, love the idea of a day devoted to sweet things; but, I can't help but wonder if Sweetest Day is part of the reason that Americans tend to be a bit hefty.

I doubt it, since none of us ever even heard of it before today...McDonalds, BurgerKing and laziness are what makes Americans fat...

Who in the world wrote the above. That's a load of trash. Candy makers etc did not concoct this 'holiday' to promote zilch. It was created by some charitable folk so there would be a day where better off people would give candy to the children of people who couldn't afford such treats. Pointless holiday the way it is remembered now, plus it is only recognised in 4 states, kinda like a christmas in summer event. Hell, halloween and trick or treating comes soon enough.

I know that my wife and I, have been celebrating sweetest day since we met back in 1989. But, I never knew where it came from until now. I'm kind of disappointed, because it was created by greedy candy makers! But, I'm not telling my wife, thats for sure!

The first time I ever heard of Sweetest Day was in 1972 in Michigan but I didn't know what it really was supposed to celebrate. But any excuse to express a little 'sweetness' to those we love is fine with me.

I personally don't mind a day devoted to candy... I'm at work and what sits at my desk is a kingsize bag of m&m's... It's the first time I'v heard of sweetest dayand didn't know about it til I bought all the candy I did to come to work... I LOVE CANDY and I LOVE SWEETEST DAY!!! Can you blame me... So why all these people complaining I bet they went out and bought them some candy or whatever...

It's really popular in Ohio, when you wake up in the morning your cell phone inbox is flooded with corny text messages for this day. I thought it was only celebrated in Ohio. Guess not.
