49 Million Americans Hungry

According to a new report, more than 49 million Americans regularly go hungry, in one of the most sobering revelations yet about the state of our economy.

The federal report says that about one in 4 children is regularly at risk of going hungry, and nearly 50 million Americans in all often struggle to have enoguh to eat. These numbers mean that over 15% of Americans are not fully able to get proper nutrition, and may often straight-up go hungry.

According to the Agriculture Secretary, Tom Vilsack, "these numbers are a wake-up call . . . for us to get very serious about food security and hunger, about nutrition and food safety in this country."

We spend billions on other countries who sit around and wait for our aid, then turn on us if we aren't fast enough getting it to them. Or, they turn on us and kill us. But, we can't take care of our own-SHAME ON US. Maybe it is time to get back to taking care of ourselves and making sure our CHILDREN and SENIOR CITIZENS and others are taken care of first. After all, it is their tax money that is going overseas to others and not to them. Doesn't sound right to me.

Americans are fatter than anyone else on the planet.BUT YET 49 MILLION ARE HUNGRY? YA THINK THERE'S A PROBLEM WITH THIS STATEMENT?

Posted by: american girl at November 18, 2009 7:51 AM

And yet millions of tons of food are sent overseas to aid foreign contries every day.

You work with Low income people? but yet you make a comment like that?? You should be dismissed from your job and learn to adjust to a low income yourself. Just because someone is low income does not mean that they are to blame. There are ALL types and kinds of people, regardless of which ethnicity or which "income status" they are.

This article comes at the heels when I just got thru praying with my grandchildren about this same issue, hunger in America. I prayed that God would touched the hearths of the greedy and wealthy people of this country to feed the hungry not only at Thanksgiving and get a photo opportunity, but to provide for them for a long time. With all their billions and millions they can only eat 3 or 4 meals a day like the rest of the population, so why not provide for the seniors, after all they would be departing rather soon than later, and what about our returning soldiers, who are injured, why not set up a trust fund for their children. those actions would not sell news. Instead we spend time talking about our wealth and our displaying it in such a gross manner. I will keep praying I know that God will provide always.

Hunger in America is a very real issue. My family is fighting this due to no fault of our own. Earlier this year I lost my paralegal job and my husband works for a company that hasn't paid their employees in 7 weeks. We are living barely on my unemployment and have totally depleted our savings. We have very poor medical through where my husband works so much of our income goes to buy medicine for our asthmatic child. So we have had to change how we shop, what we eat...we may not have much these days but no one has missed a meal. We have all lost weight. It's been through the kindness of food shelves that we have been able to survive at all. And we are very grateful for that. I don't think it's fair to prejudge that everyone is trying to get something for free. These are real issues and it affects us all. People are begging for work in our area. Jobs in our area are extremely scarce and we have begun to barter services neighbor to neighbor... Someone works on cars while another cooks a meal for them. If anything it has drawn our community closer for it.

How about this...Instead of spending billions on the space shuttle launches and that lame Obama Care, why don't we take care of the homeless and the HUNGRY...How dare our country do this to it's own people, how dare them letting millions of OUR OWN AMERICANS go HUNGRY. I get so mad when I here that we can help others that are starving but PISS on our country and the starving. Why don't we for once TAKE CARE OF OUR COUNTRY first. And it does not matter if they have cells phones or big screen tv's, its should never happen in AMERICA that we have starving people. And not everyone qualifies for foodstamps. I know someone who works has two kids at home and pays her rent (not on Hud) and pays all her bills, but she can hardly feed her kids because of she makes $50.00 over the limit to qualify for FS. So just maybe our WONDERFUL(lol) Government should NEVER EVER let this happen to OUR OWN PEOPLE. I am a proud AMERICAN but I just have to say that I a ashamed of how it is being taken care of..FIX US FIRST!!!!!!

Posted by: Mad at November 18, 2009 10:22 AM

One more thing....How about this spend Billions on the FOOD BANKS around our country for people can get food.Even those are running short. And unemployment does nothing to help feed families cause you hardly get anything. And you sure don't have much after paying your bills off and everything else. So for all those that are having a hard time, I pray for you, cause we are in the same boat as you. I want to be a proud American again...Proud....

Our "all knowing President" should cancel a few trips and give the Millions of Dollars we'd save to "People Helping People" instead of traveling around the world to appologize for being who we are here in this wonderful USA. We are a Great Nation. We all need to keep a close eye on what's going on behind the scenes with the selection of friends our President has put in office!

Posted by: bgraham at November 18, 2009 10:50 AM

You are so right about the ONES in office. How dare him do what he is doing..Appologize for what! Cause he is an evil Dictator and wants to rule the world. He should never say Sorry for the things we have done. He should be stronger then that...Thank God I did not vote that man into office..IMPEACH OBAMA AND PELOSI....What has this country done..GOD HELP US!!! We need to be the one and only SUPER POWER AGAIN!!Not China and those other communist countries.PLEASE good going Liberals..While our People are starving "HE" is traveling the world...SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Mad at November 18, 2009 11:09 AM

If someone looked at our past situation..they would say that we sucked.

I had a cell phone..a TV...a nice home. BUT guess what? I had to get gov't help.

WHY? Because my husband lost his job and was hitting the pavement to get another one. Plus we had kids to feed before paying for the bills.

All the while, bills are piling up and people just point their fingers and say, "How dare you get gov't own a nice house."

Don't judge a book by it's cover. YOu have no idea what people are going through. I had these things before the job loss....I didn't buy them while I was in line for food stamps.

And no, we dont' believe in abusing the system. Once the income started coming in...we said bye to gov't help!

looking for a job is a full time job if u spend 40 hrs a week looking for a job then u will probably find one. if u just sit on ur ass and scan craigs list once in a while then u wont.

Posted by: Anonymous at November 18, 2009 11:24 AM

I agree you should lose your job!! So i guess if you are low income, you shouldn't even have a phone. Do you know if the cell phone is their only phone or not?? Also if you are a "poor" family you shouldn't have anything special for the family. Maybe they shouldn't even have a t.v. for specials nights because it is expensive to go out on the town. You should not judge people so harshly, and families should not suffer, because they have no money!!!

Posted by: Anonymous at November 18, 2009 11:32 AM

45 million hungry eh? probably only five million with real need the rest are scum. we need to concentrate on those who really cant help themselves

Posted by: Anonymous at November 18, 2009 11:46 AM

To the IDIOT who wrote about get a different job or career...Can you please point out where there are jobs and if you do know please be kind and tell us all that are out of jobs right now.And a CAREER takes time you moron. Do you ever read a news paper, or ever see the stats on the unemployment around our nation. I am very able minded, but guess what IDIOT my company laid me off after 12 years with them cause they had to down size.I am on unemployment and it still does not cover what I owe to the power, gas, water and my mortgage. So don't come on here and say that it is my fault I am in this unemployment stats like many other AMERICANS are, you are a MORON...

Posted by: mad at November 18, 2009 12:25 PM

Oh, so people are hungry, and it's Obama's fault. people wake up, these problems have been going on for DECADES! Obama has been president for less than one year. Please pull the in the cloet racist out of your soul, dust him off, and kick him in the butt! Send him flying! Because all of your negative, anti-Obama comments are racially motivated, not motivated by the facts. It is terrible that people are hungry this year, and guess what, it was terrible last year, and the year before that, and the year before that, all through the Bush administration, and the Clinton administration before that, and so on.

I love how all of America's problems were created in less than a year by one man, to hear some tell it. Where are your Bush denunciations? Oh, he's a 'good old boy', never meaning no harm. If Obama were white he would receive much less criticism, and that means that many Americans still have a slave master mentality.

Posted by: mad at ignorant people at November 18, 2009 12:44 PM

Mad: I would probably sympathize with your situation if you weren't so biased and bigoted in your views of the current administration. What makes you think that you are better than people in other countries? It IS time for us, Americans, to stop looking down on other nationalities, to stop judging lest we be judged and found wanting. And, seeing as how we, under Bush's administration, went to war in Iraq without the support of most of the civilized world, in addition to committing many other not as well publicized indecent acts, I think apologies are in order. We can't be a superpower if we do not apply the gifts of humility and understanding to the way we treat other countries. We are not better than anyone else. Tell me this, what does America export, to benefit other countries? Entertainment. That's it. Everything else, we have to get from other countries, so yes, we need to have great relationships with the world, because we are dependent on the world for the things that we are accustomed to. The computer you are using right now could not exist if not for imports from China and Korea and other places where the components are made.

We all live on ONE planet, it is time that all countries start acting like it, and it starts with changing the mind set of people like you who want to point fingers and place blame in the absolute wrong places.

But then, giving that you appear to be small minded and bigoted, it makes sense that you would say something like "We should never say sorry for the things we have done." Most slave owners never felt like they needed to say sorry, either. Hey, why apologize for Hiroshima, we only killed or injured millions. Why apologize? Well, in keeping with your motto, I do not apologize for calling you a small minded, thoughtless, hard hearted racist. nope, not sorry one bit!

Posted by: mad at mad at November 18, 2009 12:59 PM

For one thing I am not a Racist you small minded idiot. Just because I don't like him has nothing to do with me being a racist. Please..That is bull, why is it because he is black, I don't care if he was purple, green and had one eye. His color has nothing to do with how I feel. My husband is black and my kids are half so don't go there. I have the right not to like him just like you may have felt about Bush. Is that not one of my rights as an American to not like who we have for President and speak freely. Or has the rules changes now that we a a black President. Don't call me something I am not, and heartless why is that because I feel we should take care of OUR Country first, oh you must be one of those Liberals right..Free loving, peace to the world Liberals..Piss OFF
