Deer Jumps into Lion Exhibit (VIDEO)

Sad story from the National Zoo in rock Creek Park, after video was posted where a deer jumps into the lion exhibit and is chased down by the lions.

The baby deer was caught on video getting lost in the lion's area of the zoo, and grabbed by a couple of lions before it managed to escape into the moat. The crowd at the zoo can be heard cheering for the deer as it escaped the lion exhibit, after which zoo staff finally arrived and took the deer to be treated. Sadly though, latest reports say the deer's injuries were too severe, and it had to be put to sleep :( At least it will go down in history as a hero, though! I'll give my little animal and extra hug in his memory.

The last place a wild baby deer wants to find itself in is a lion exhibit at the National Zoo. Unfortunately, that's exactly where one ended up Sunday afternoon after it wandered out of Rock Creek Park and jumped in...Two female lions went after the deer and severely injured it, but the deer got away from its predators and made a mad dash for the moat...

Interesting that a zoo raised animal reacts in a natural way and a wild deer does not.

Wow - anger issues much @ "betterthanjohn"? "John" brought up an interesting point - he didn't say anything horrible. Hint: Why don't you go whack off you'll feel better. Another Hint: No more caffeine.

Really? People are scared that the lion will do it's natural thing at a zoo to a deer? People should stay at home in front of their television set's more often so they don't have to experience real life and natural things. I would Hate to see these people reactions in Africa when the Lion would be chasing down a gazelle... Poor Bambi...

We all know that deer are customary prey for lions, but for crying out loud, this was a zoo. The lions did NOT have to kill to eat. And no,the visitors did NOT expect to see nature in action. So sad that the deer had to be put down anyway.

I feel bad for the lions. I'm sure thats the most action they've seen in years. Too bad they couldn't have more fun like that!

Posted by: jojo at November 9, 2009 6:44 PM

What a lesson for the kids! Stop nature, then kill the thing anyway.

HA HA HA HA !!! SHIT, I NEEDED A GOOD LAUGH--AT THE BLOG THAT IS.
GLAD THE DEER GOT AWAY. WHO WANTS TO WATCH A LION RIP APART A BABY DEER, JUST BEFORE THEY HEAD OFF TO EAT THEIR LUNCH?

Posted by: nojohnsclub at November 9, 2009 7:00 PM

What's the difference between beer nuts and deer nuts? Beer nuts are $1.25 and deer nuts are under a buck.

Posted by: johneatsdeernuts at November 9, 2009 7:19 PM

Yes its said what happen to the deer but any animal that has have a taste of the wild knows that its either a prey or a predator. It did what it knew how to do was fight for it life. The lions shouldn't been seen as a viscious beast it was just reacting on primal instincts as to eat it's prey...

The zoo feed them deer al the time from hunts and fresh road kill. these are animals that are kept as free as posible in captivty .One less deer to run in front of my jeep

Posted by: Badone at November 9, 2009 7:31 PM

Why wasn't the deer left in there and let nature tack its course. Who knows maybe one day you can release it to the wild

Posted by: patrick fitzgerald at November 9, 2009 7:46 PM

Too bad it wasn't Glenn Beck who jumped in there.

Posted by: Dave at November 9, 2009 8:56 PM

Maybe if Glenn Beck jumps into your backyard, you can eat him. Or, I could just stop by and you could eat me.

Posted by: daveisdumb at November 9, 2009 9:19 PM

looks like the lion just wants to play...so cute.

Posted by: maden at November 9, 2009 9:25 PM

The Lion was only playing w/ the deer, just amusing her feline attributes. She 'LET' the baby deer get away! Animals have an inate ability to know serious puncture points to literally 'kill' w/ one bite r puncture. I don't C Y the baby deer had to be euthanised, of course, i'm no expert.

In this video i heard screaming people and saw pain. So, Q: you know the how painful the killing is??? A: Quit meat, be vegetarian and LOVE ANIMALS.

Say it 3 times and it will come true.

Posted by: BETTERBUTTERFACE at November 9, 2009 10:49 PM

yeah...looking @ video...could have been claw puncture wound to baby fawn's lung. prob, zoo would have saved the deer if at all possible. i am a vegetarian! i love the tastes of meats, but hate thoughts on killing of animals...so it goes. i think Veternarians should intervene on over population of deer & spay/neuter the deer!

Posted by: isopod at November 9, 2009 10:52 PM

The GREAT part of the video is listening to all the mamby-pamby suburbanite yuppies aghast at the natural order of "Lion is SUPPOSE to eat deer." I'm a deer hunter and I eat bambis. I just wish the lion would have scored a free lunch! LOL*

Posted by: Tom Janik at November 9, 2009 11:05 PM

Wait, what no one realizes that if a baby deer can jump in, then maybe a full grown lion can jump out....

Posted by: John's lost thought at November 9, 2009 11:45 PM

damn i wish the lion killed it and got a good dinner. ah well better luck next time i guess

Posted by: josh at November 10, 2009 12:00 AM

If God didn't want us to eat animals why did he make them out of meat?

Posted by: paul at November 10, 2009 1:00 AM

Spay and neuter the deer? Smoke crack much?

Here's a clue for you. Humans caused the overpopulation of deer when we moved over here and killed off as many cougars and wolves as we could. Remove the NATURAL predators, and the population of the prey animals skyrockets. Most places are too populous to reintroduce those natural predators, and the idea of cougars and wolves wandering around scares most people silly. So the humans, who wiped out the natural predators, have to step in and BE the predators.

Spaying and neutering wild animals? Not remotely realistic. I'm curious where the funding is supposed to come from, here.

Besides, Paul is right, if we weren't supposed to eat deer they wouldn't be made of deer meat. And deer meat tastes really good.

calm down guys.

Posted by: betterthanbetterthananyonwhonamesthemselvesafterjohn at November 10, 2009 2:10 AM

This is by far the most amusing blog to read. Living beings have instinct the lion acted and people were mortified. Notice how domisticated the lion is, it looked at the crowd during pursuit and gave up when it hit the water. wild lions do not take focus of prey and will jump in water. Shouldn't a zoo try and have the animal live like it would naturally not just fatten it in a pretty cell. Sad to see queen of the jungle so weak at doing what was natural to it.
