Parents Fear Closing Schools: Sniper

At the height of the D.C. sniper case, a threat rang out against the children of the D.C area, but schools and parents had mixed feelings about how to address the threat and whether to close schools or let life continue on.

Many parents wondered if it was best to protect their children by closing schools as the sniper case continued on, but ultimately it was decided that letting the kids' day to day life continue so they could have a sense of normalcy and sanity. Said one principal at the time, in the NY Times, ''There is a lot of pressure in the atmosphere, but I think the students can find refuge in having a routine.''

As the police in Montgomery County, Md., confirmed the sniper's threat, first reported in The Richmond Times-Dispatch and The Los Angeles Times, school officials in the Washington area decided against shutting schools or taking even more drastic steps than they have since the sniper first began killing strangers. And most parents seemed to agree with the decision.
